Hi all,
I'm experiencing an issue on my stock 4.1.1 Nexus 7. The screen seems to be turning itself on randomly. It normally turns off again but may toggle on/off quite a few times. Then it seems to go for a while whitout turning on. Bit odd.
Anyone else experienced this or have any thoughts on a reason for it?
Thanks
Same problem here, except with a Samsung Galaxy Nexus.
I just updated to 4.1.1 today and this is the first time I've seen it happen. Was previously on 4.02 without issues.
I have had the same problem. It seems to happen in the evening and I wondered whether the case was causing it to overheat. Seems to be OK when I take it out of the case. I phoned Google and was told that it hadn't happened before. I will contact them again if it doesn't get any better.
Sorry. Misread the post. Mine goes to sleep, not turns on

Same here but mine is not exactly stock.
I have installed Apex Launcher plus numerous apps. I thought maybe it was the launcher doing it. But at this point... I have no idea. Just noticed it tonight coming on and then going off within 1 sec. but its random. it may do it once within an hour, or it may do it up to 5 times within a min... then go several minutes completely black screen. Crazy stuff. I thought maybe it was getting a message at first but then realized I had the WiFi off on my phone so it was dead to any incoming messages/wifi. I am really curious as to what is causing it and will be following this post as well as others quite frequent. Also.... the latest app that I have downloaded was OSMOS HD. it wasn't waking then sleeping before that app... just my 2 cents.
Hi Qbensis,
By stock, I just mean not rooted and not running any custom firmware. I had various apps and the like installed.
I have actually since rooted my N7 and installed a few custom ROMs and since then have not seen the issue at all. If you want to stay stock, I assume the issue will be fixed in the next update
I have seen this a few times. Middle of the night I look over and the screen is on then off. I check the power usage overnight and I see little blips of screen on when looking at the graph. Not sure whats causing it (I figure a app).
Same Problem over here, any solutions???
I'm on stock 4.1.2 and having the same problem, not rooted. Creeped me out in the middle of the night when it goes on and off.
N7 Random Turn On
Same here on 4.2.1. I carry in front pocket all the time with screen facing leg and feel heat when it happens. Has even done it when in Power Off mode and still does it. I thought that would prevent it for sure. Very irritating and drains battery. We Winter in 55+ community and drive around in golf carts. I am starting to wonder if WiFi spots trigger it. Will continue to track behavior and search other forums. Curious that there have not been any solid suggestions or solutions.
Happens to my rooted but stock 4.2.1. It happens randomly when I recharge using a battery pack (4AA) as opposed to charging using regular AC. It's annoying as heck! I don't know how to get this fixed!
I've been getting this on both SmoothROM and raspbeanjelly, and it's very irritating.
It has to be an app that is causing this. I initially thought perhaps it was GPS Status, because I caught it in the notification bar a few times when the screen turned on.
My device definitely isn't hot when it happens.
I'm suspecting the Email app, Maps, or Facebook.
EDIT - not any of them either. I'll test Beautiful Widgets next.
Okay guys, try this.

I'd been suffering from this for weeks, factory reset, reinstalled and changed out ROMs, installed apps one by one over the course of several days to keep an eye on what might be triggering it etc. Nothing worked for more than 2-3 days at most, and the issue always came back in one way or another.
It was causing me to have to turn the Nexus off when not in use because it would be draining battery (15-20% overnight compared to 2-3% when the issue wasn't present).
Then I stumbled upon that guide and using Gemini I disabled Maps from auto-running, turned off Latitude, and so far so good.
If it works for you too, be sure to hit thanks on Karpfenhai's post!
I was having this same problem on my Nexus 7 running stock 4.2.2 rooted with SuperSU. Finally tracked it down to having installed BetterBatteryStats and for some reason, I had not granted it perpetual root. It was causing the device to wake and turn the display on for random times (up to 13 hours, which killed the battery), not always showing the SU request dialogue. I granted perpetual SU privilege to BetterBatteryStats and problem went away.
Try taking out the battery and clean out the USB port with a toothpick. This worked for me. All the dust that accumulates in the post can cause the phone to think it's charging.
Really weird, doesn't seem to happen when the tablet is stressed or something. On the other hand happened more often with heavy memory stuff like big pdf's and when i live youtube videos loading, maybe I have an issue with the 2 gig's of ram? it's there any way i can test that?
Sometimes the tablet isn't doing anything an restarts. Like when the home screen is blocked. Anyone else had this problems?

I would suggest you try flashing the nexus 10 factory restore image and see if that fixes things. If it's still randomly rebooting I'd send it in for a replacement.

I'm getting the same, please keep us updated because I'm hoping it's a software issue...
Got some of these too. One of these was really freaking, I had to force a reboot. I definitely think it's software

You can see the reboots I'm getting on here... http://imgur.com/704mp.png
i have also problems. Sometimes when i usw Chrome, the Browser don't react and then the screen goes black and i have to push the button on top for five seconds to reboot my nexus. Had this problem three times. I,m hoping for a fix...
Happened to me twice already! Wtf

Guys, I think found a pattern: Each time I get a reboot seems to be related to the wifi connection, like if the wifi freezes the tablet. Pay atention to the wifi settings when you get reboot / restart the tablet it's like searching the wifi connection like crazy, but, if you reboot normally the wifi it's already connected. Seems like a clue to me.
I played like 4 hours yesterday Chaos Rings. Seems like a really advanced game to me, so the stressing test is passed. It's not related to stress IMHO.
I've been getting random reboots too. Took several attempts to get all the way through setup right after taking it out of the box. At first I thought maybe I just hadn't given it enough time to acclimate to ambient temperature or something, but problem has persisted even after flashing the factory image via fastboot. Haven't noticed a correlation with wifi, but does seem to happen mostly when idle. Have also had a couple freezes and shutdowns, too.
Guess I'll be calling Google this morning... Argh.

I actually haven't had any reboots yet. I haven't stressed it with any games, but installed my normal apps and used it for web browsing/xda for a couple hours and no problems for me (yet...fingers crossed)
Called Google, and after being on hold for almost 1/2 hour (I'd imagine they're pretty swamped) explained the issue as well as what I've already done to try to resolve it (factory reset, fastboot recovery image flash) and they started the replacement process without any additional questions.
Just my luck, the first time in ages that I buy a device the day it comes out, I end up with a dud... Hopefully I get the replacement quickly!
I'm really nervous at this point. Mine is perfect aside from a piece of dust in the screen. Google is sending me a new one, but now I am afraid I will get one with more issues.
no more reboots here. But i think it's a software problem.
I have had two unexpected reboots. One was about halfway through ep. 1 of Planet Earth. I don't recall what I had running the other time.
I'm still running stock 4.2, unrooted.
Somebody postes useful info.

Mine rebooted then rebooted three times in a row before even getting in the desktop.
+1 Reboots
3 reboots in the past hour! Location svcs disabled.
Sometimes under load (gaming), other times just random.
It has happened several times caused by various apps such as chrome, play store, dolphin after downloading something. Screen freezes and system eventually resets on it's own. Is anyone else having this problem?
Build: JOP40C
Same here, restarted and frozen 3-4 times in couple of hours.
I was browsing, using apps, dowloading in background, loads of syncing etc - maybe taxing the system causes it? (But i though it should handle it a bit better...)
I had a couple of reboots but no freeze before the firmware update.
After the update it hasn't rebooted but it froze once

I've had exactly what you are saying. I had it three times and haven't had it since. Will update if problem persists.

My keeps loosing Wi-Fi and completely shut down every time I turn it off and didn't turn back on in 5 seconds. Making things worse I have to wait several minutes until it allows me to turn it on by pressing power for a 5 seconds. In those few minutes it does not react on power button at all.
Factory reset did not help. Sadly it looks like I have no options other than return it back.
+1 reboots and freezing. Don't really want to return it since its finally rooted and cust recovery. Anyone think waiting for cust Roms will help?

No need to return the tablet for software issues.... Updates will come quick. That's a Nexus!!!

Mine had been randomly restarting after installing some of my apps. I finally narrowed it down to HD Widgets and haven't had a reboot since uninstalling it.
I am not using HD Widgets and I get restarts periodically. What is the most efficient way to submit a bug report to google.

Just got an RMA for mine for the same issues u guys are experiencing. Wifi disconnecting and chrome freezing and rebooting. Looks like it may not be a hardware issue. Wonder if I should just keep it and wait for an update.
Edit - It was fine before the software update. Probably should ignore it once I get my replacement unit
I am also seeing the reboots happening every 3 to 4 hours like clockwork. I didn't have the device for more than a few minutes before the first update was pushed to it, so I can't say whether or not that was related. I do have HD Widgets installed, so I will pull it off and see if that helps slow the reboots down.
I'm using BootLog Uptime to keep track of the number and frequency of reboots. If this pattern holds, my money is on some kind of memory leak... just thinking from our own development experiences. Given how much higher the resolution is on the N10, I wouldn't count out some graphics heavy apps blowing through their heap much, much faster than on any previous Android device. We'll have to wait and see.
Just called Google and asked for replacement. I hope they aired new updates at the time my replacement arrived.
BTW, I had to initiated factory reset five or six times until it finally clears all data. Never saw Google product so buggy before.
That's a real bummer. Mine doesn't reset or display any of those problems. I have a tiny bit of light bleed in one corner at full brightness and the screen seems to have gotten a little more yellow over time... maybe just the glue drying. If any of you are brave and don't want to return right away, unlock the bootloader and reflash the stock image from google and see if that fixes things. It can help if there was some sort of corruption when you updated.
You may want to wait on that RMA. I had the same trouble with HD widgets installed.
No trouble at all since uninstalling...

I've never even touched hd widgets and have had two lock ups since I got it on Friday. Both occurred when task switching back to chrome and it was loading a previously viewed web page. Both times I was able to tap the power button to shut off the screen but couldn't wake it up. It eventually reset itself. It boots in like 5 seconds so it's not too terrible to wait for a software update, but I wonder what is causing it?
I think Chrome has some major bugs to be squashed when running on this device....mine has only crashed when browsing. That said, after uninstalling HD widgets, no crashes since...

I'd like to update my results. From last night, just like djflan, I removed HD Widgets and so far, 7 hours later, the crashes are gone. So I have my fingers crossed that I've found my culprit.
Also, I installed the HoloWeb browser and I have found it to be quite a bit quicker and more stable than Chrome. For those of you have issues with Chrome it is worth a few moments to track this app down (here on XDA) and give it a try.
Some of you may not have remembered or gone through the Android 3.x transition, but these kinds of issues were very prevalent during that update as well. Many developers simply don't or can't test on a wide enough range of devices and OS combinations to catch all the issues, or they rely heavily on assumptions or code that "always worked fine" in the past. I think we're seeing the same sorts of behaviors again with 4.2, so it will take a couple of months for it all to shake out.
For now I think I have a stable configuration on the Nexus 10 and I'm sticking with the device. No RMAs will solve issues that are software related in my case.
Removed hd widgets, no crashes yet.
I get the same random reboots and I've never used the fancy widget app. it has happened 3 times already. One I was browsing, another time deleting a widget and the last one when I tried to change the wallpaper. Everytime I had to hold the power button 5-6 seconds until it reboot

I spoke to soon earlier... I actually had 2 restarts today. Once while chrome attempted to open a link from tapatalk and another while trying to load one of the free magazines in the play app.
I don't have hd widgets installed either

So I recently updated to 4.3 on my N4. I'm running stock, no root, kernel changes, or build adjustments.
I've looked through the forums and browsed google to see if this might be a Nexus 4 issue or a 4.3 bug.
I've noticed that if I'm in any app (most noticeable in the stock messaging app) and the screen times out, the next time I unlock the device and attempt to hit the back button it will not do anything. If I hit the home button or the "multi-task window" button I can back out or close the app I'm in.
Going back into the app shows no sign of any issue. Doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to the issue.
Just wanted to see if anyone had any advice on a fix or ran into the same issue.
At this point the only thing I can think of is a factory reset, and it's more of an annoyance at this point.
I recognize your problem. Had this in a particular app (flitsmeister) myself.
Pushing the back button won't exit the app or app is unresponsive.
This bug sometimes showed up, but not constantly.
I had this problem in 4.2.2 already and haven't found a fix.

Pretty much sums up the issue I'm having. That at least tells me it's an Android based issue although isn't exclusive to 4.3. Thanks for the reply.
Same issue... Why isnt google acknowledging the issue?
I had same problem in PA 8/3 trying to back out of phone app or contacts tab even after just opening. fixed in 8/06 PA. idk what change was made though to fix it

Running 4.4.4. Think this started after the 4.4 update. Sometimes Chrome works fine, other times the page refuses to load. The blue line under the URL starts to go from left to right; gets about 1/10th of the way, then just stops. The blue line goes away (finishes loading?) and the page is blank. I uninstall the Chrome updates and go back to the original Nexus 4 Chrome, and it works fine. Later, I'll update Chrome, and it works fine. Then, a few days later, the freezing starts all over again.
Any help? Or, should I just give up on Chrome on the Nexus 4? This only happens on my Nexus 4; not other devices and not even on my wife's Nexus 4.
Not facing this issue personally. If there was any way this error could be reproduced, maybe we would be able to help you.
I have the same problem, started before 4.4.4 using Chrome and chrome beta.

Hi all, I have a problem with Chrome. I'm using galaxy s5 and whenever I open the browser for the first time I get the message: Unable to access the network, but once I refresh the page it loads everything as it should. How do I fix it without having to constantly keep chrome in the RAM. Thanks

Same blank page issue here....a quick Google shows many others having this issue too. So far all of the remedies on googles forums are worthless.
