Could push/ActiveSync Gmail be a possibility?

Hi everyone. I am sure I am not the first person to wonder about this. Microsoft’s “push” email technology that works with Exchange Server is entirely HTTP based. Obviously Microsoft wants this to work with only their server platform but couldn’t it be possible to use this with Gmail?
I can’t honestly see if being that difficult for the folks at Google to reverse engineer the exact format of the HTTP posts going back and forth between an Exchange server and a WM device. On top of this Gmail has Contacts and Calendar as well. If I could sync my WM device with Gmail I wouldn’t need Exchange anymore. I could even use Google Apps to get my email at my own domain name.
I tried setting up mail.google.com and also www.gmail.com as ‘exchange’ servers on my HTC Touch but it didn’t work :-(

Option 1. forward your gmail account to mail2web or one of the other free services which is a free hosted exchange account (more or less).
Option 2. Set up your gmail for I-map and "idle" it. I know it can be done using flex mail, but not sure about idle in Pocket Outlook.
Option 3. Set up your device to check for mail every X minutes. You already new that one though.
Option 4. Set up to forward your mail to your device. IE: on cingular, it used to be you could forward it to "[email protected]" That one, you would need to check with your service provider.

I know there are ways I could forward my Gmail to another email service that is an Exchange Server and so does support Microsoft-style push email BUT I am wondering why Google doesn’t implement this themselves.
There are a tone of Windows Mobile devices out there AND Google is already offering Gmail at your own domain name with “Google Apps” service. If all of a sudden I could get true push Gmail with my own domain name (part of Google Apps) I think a lot of people might reconsider that upgrade to Exchange 2007.
Figuring out the exact format of the HTTP conversation between the WM device and the Exchange server couldn’t be that hard. Heck, I think I might be able to take a crack at it myself
In case anyone is wondering what happens is this. The WM device makes an HTTP request to the Exchange server and says “notify me if anything changes in these folders within the next X minutes”. The Exchange server the starts monitoring the folders in question for the specified period of time. If the folder “changes” (a message arrives, a contact is updated, an appointment re-scheduled) Exchange sends the changed items back as part of the HTTP response (the connection is left open and ‘hanging’ for the specified period of time). If nothing happens and the time period lapses the Exchange server sends an empty response and the HTTP connection is closed. The WM device then resumes the process over again by making another request. This it why it is called “client initiated ‘push’” because in reality the WM device is continually asking for changes. The constant back & forth acts as a kind of heartbeat so both ends of the connection (the WM device and the Exchange Server) know the other is still there (in case the WM device is out of service, turned off or otherwise off the grid).
I can see no reason why this HTTP conversation can’t be implemented (along with the correct URL’s) on a non-Exchange server such as Gmail. If Google decided to offer this I think it might be an Exchange killer. Currently I am thinking of ways I can get my own Exchange server. I have several customers with Exchange and a few of the might be willing to host my email for me. Currently I am using Google Apps which I absolutely LOVE but I would also love to be able to sync my plethora of contacts.
Maybe someone in Google reads these forums

I am sure your probably right. But if Google is interested in taking business away from Exchange (which I think they are judging by the Google Apps sign-up page) then it would make sense to provide this service to the thousands (if not millions) of WM users out there worldwide.

From the posts in this thread, looks like nobody mentioned having tried MobiPush. Mobipush allows you to have your Gmail, Yahoo, or other IMAP or POP account email pushed to your WM 5/6 device using the device's Direct-Push Technology. I am currently using the service with my Gmail account and it works well. Sign up is free. You must setup your Gmail options to allow IMAP or POP access, then follow the instructions on MobiPush's site to setup your device. I also forgot to mention that it seems that only mail is sync'ed at this time (no contacts or calendar, or tasks.)

Windows Live Hotmail provides Direct Push

However when you do this your reply comes from your Live/Hotmail account. Do you know if you can do this and have your reply come from your gmail account?

Apparently there are other companies/groups that have independently developed products that are compatible with Microsoft’s “DirectPush” technology. So the good news is we know it can be and has been done.

Hopefully Google will develop something that will allow Gmail to masquerade as an Exchange server to a Windows Mobile device. Imagine having push email as well as contact and calendar synchronization with Gmail?? on your WM device? All without any third-party connectors/forwarding/etc.

nuevasync is great for syncing google contacts and calendar. No downloads everything works through activesync. Their blog says gmail is coming so for now I just use IMAP for gmail.

I simply use www.mobipush.com services, works great for emails.

First of all, you don't need MS Push because Google does have a mail push mechanism in place. It is called IMAP Idle. You can read it from here: http://www.isode.com/whitepapers/imap-idle.html. So all you need to do is setting up your IMAP IDLE compatible client to sync with gmail via IMAP instead of POP.
Now, you may also like to forward you mail to mail2web and take advantage of the push mail plus push calendar, contact and task. But you can also use OggSync and keep everything in Google.

Actually I am only using/testing funambol on my gmail. I don't use a calendar as of yet, too little time to test on funambol. I do know that contacts synch via funambol does work. I guess you are calling me to task;-)

I know there are various ways using combinations of third party software and/or services and so forth of syncing email one way, calendar another, etc, etc. But imagine being able to sync EVERYTHING in Google Apps with their counterparts on your Windows Mobile device using the NATIVE built-in synchronization mechanism of that device.
If Google is serious about killing Exchange in the SMB market place they will implement this.
Currently I still sync my Vogue with my Exchange server even though I also use Google Apps.

Google sync on HTC hero with mail app?

After the new announcement for push email on the iphone using microsoft exchange, I have become interested in attempting this on my hero.
I know I can add gmail accounts to both the gmail app and the mail app on the hero, but there is a reason I want to try the exchange method. The gmail app gets push email, but the mail app doesn't. However, I much prefer the mail app on the hero, along with the mail widget. If using this method will work, it can mean I can use the mail app, along with push gmail.
Has anyone tried to add their gmail account to their hero using this method? I've tried, but it says it is unable to add the account. The account is verified successfuly, it just cannot be added. I'm not sure whether or not this is a temporary issue.
Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

I added my second gmail account as an exchange account, and then set sync frequency as "as items arrive" i.e. push. Emails indeed arrive very quickly.
The problem is, I cannot send email! I tried composing a new mail, or replying to a received email. After I press "Send", the mail app acted like the email was sent but the other side never it. What's more, I couldn't find the email I sent in the "Sent" or "Out" or "Draft" folders. Manually refreshing the account doesn't seem to work either. I don't know if this is the problem of the mail app, or the problem with gmail's server.
Another problem is, com.htc.provider got force closed very frequently... although it has no problem restarting itself.

Okay, now I realize the com.htc.provider problem is caused by Peep rather than Google Sync http://bit.ly/5uWoi
The problem about sending email still exist though, and some of my received emails are getting "error" as their subjects, although the bodies of the emails display fine.

Its the same for me:

I have the same problem. Maybe there's something wrong with Google's IMAP service? I have restored to an old backup just in case it was a settings issue but it still doesn't work.
Hope there is a solution soon.

Tried using the HTC Mail app and IMAP for Gmail seems to be working just fine. But the Google Mail app is still not working.

I am not sure if this is a problem with Gmail's server or a problem with the HTC mail app.
To set up IMAP for Google App, just set it up as normal Gmail (i.e. imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, yes SSL), and enter the whole Google App email address as your username.
To set up Exchange for Gmail or Google App, use m.google.com as sever name and leave domain blank. Enter your Google account username and password, and if you are using Google App, enter the whole email address as username as above.

I love that Google added Gmail exchange support. IMAP Idle is close, but Exchange is true push which is necessary for some of us. I think IMAP Idle gives much better battery life though IMO

I have google sync setup via ActiveSync exchange on me HD2 which works great.
only thing I can't get working is sending from another e-mail address that you can setup in your google account. outlook mobile doesn't let you change the from address but I have found it in the registry and changed it to my other e-mail address but when I send a mail it still shows as coming from googlemail address. Is this a exchange sever side setting or is there a way to get it to send from another email address. I would like this as it would save me adding all my accounts to Outlook mobile.
HD2 is so cool I have hardly used the laptop since getting it.

* Changing Order of Recurring Event May Remove From Device
If an instance of a recurring event is moved to the same day as the previous or the following instance of the same series, or if it is moved to occur before the previous or after the following instance of the series, the entire series will not be displayed on the device Calendar.
* Changes to Meeting Attendees on Device Aren't Synchronized to Server
If the list of invitees to a meeting is changed on the device, these changes will not be reflected on the server after synchronizing.

same problem, but how would you do that manipulating-senderfield-thing with the other smtp-server? modify the smtp-server to replace [email protected] with [email protected]??

I've manage to come to a satisfactory solution staying with gmail...
I have set my other email addresses to forward all mail to gmail, so that I receive them through push. When I answer, as mentioned the e-mail originates from the gmail address. It doesn't bother me so much so far, I've set the From name to My Name (mobile), so people know why it might show up differently.
The real problem was when they answer, obviously only gmail will receive the answer, while I'd like to have it in my normal inbox as well for archival. So I've set filters on gmail so that all mail sent to "my gmail address" and containing "my normal address" (should be the case as they initially wrote the mail to it, which shows up in the included original message when replying, except for those few senders who don't include original message in replies) gets forwarded to my normal address.
If you only have one "normal" address you could just do an unconditional forward, but I preferred having gmail sort my 3 addresses correctly.
Yes this theoretically leads to an infinite loop (when gmail forwards to my normal server, the latter will forward again to gmail as it does this with every message it receives, etc), but gmail servers are clever and ignore it.

Could you eleborate on how you set those filters, I was looking for the same solution.

See below. Sorry for French gmail, but you should be able to find your way
the .ch address is one of my normal addresses, the gmail one is... well, the gmail one. I have one such rule for each of my normal addresses.

I really like the new email interface that comes with the Xoom as well as the new and similar Gmail app interface. However, I also have a non-Gmail account that supports imap push which does not appear to be supported in the new stock email app. To get push email from that account, I am using K-9 which works well with push, however, I much prefer the new stock email interface. My question is, am I missing a setting on the stock email app for push (it is set up as an imap account), or, if not, what is the limitation or reasoning to not have included push in this app?
As a side comment, I did try forwarding all of my non-Gmail email to my Gmail account so I would receive it on the Xoom via push. This worked fine for about a week at which time, I as well as everyone that had sent or been copied on these emails started being flooded with notices that delivery of the email had been delayed (although it had actually been received) but attempts would be made to resend this email for the next few days. With each attempt to resend another notice would be received. My and everyone else's mailboxes were being over-filled with these notices so I stopped forwarding to Gmail and in about three days, at the end of the attempt to resend time period, these notices stopped. The account I was forwarding from was an Apple account (.me). I don't really believe in conspiracy theories but this one has me wondering!

I have an IMAP account. When you are setting it up at the end it asks for refresh interval. I put that to never and it seems to push my email just fine.

under apps at the top right there are two email clients, gmail and email. Anything other than gmail gets loaded into email and is viewed in there. There are also two seperate widgets both of which I have on page 1.

That is interesting as when I tell the regular email client, set up as an imap account, to "Never" check, it does just that....it never checks. I have to go into the app and manually refresh it to get any email. On the Gmail client, a time selection is not available as it is set to sync automatically with your gmail account.

I, too, do not find that the "never" setting works. I notice on the Exchange seetings there are extra fields to syn with server. IMAP seems to have left those choices out.

I am very new to Android. I just received my Note 10.1 today. I am trying to configure my gmail and other mails on it. I want to use the mail app for all my emails instead of GMAIL app. How do I do that? When I initially booted the device, I used my gmail account and it automatically configured my gmail on the GMAIL app. I configured gmail on the native mail app as well. Now I have my gmail on both places, I want to use only the native mail app. Removing email sync under settings > accounts> is causing a sync error icon and it also cause the GMAIL app to crash.
Like I said I am very new to Android, this is my first android device. Can someone help me configure this? Hope I posted this on the right forum.

Use another gmail account for your main android account. And then add your current gmail acount to email app..

Hi, Thanks for reply. So you want me to use this new id to download apps etc on the play store, but use my main id for emails?

I don't use the Gmail app either. I use the Samsung stock e-mail client so my Exchange and other e-mail accounts are all in a unified inbox. Samsung's e-mail client can be set up on Gmail to receive "push" e-mail via Activesync. In the stock e-mail client set up a new e-mail account using your Gmail address and passord. On the first set-up page you'll see a "manual setup" option, select it.
Use these settings...
Under domain\user name enter...
google\"your e-mail address"@gmail.com
Under Exchange server enter...
m.google.com
Now you'll receive e-mails as they arrive in you Gmail inbox. This method is also less hard on the battery. Go in to Settings>Application manager and swipe three times to the left until "all" applications are showing. Scroll down to find the Gmail app. Open it and press "disable." Now all your Gmail will be routed through the stock e-mail client without being duplicated in Gmail.
P.S. - Gmail via Activesync is being discontinued to new users (legacy user's are protected) effective February 1, 2013.

Now you'll receive e-mails as they arrive in you Gmail inbox. This method is also less hard on the battery. Go in to Settings>Application manager and swipe three times to the left until "all" applications are showing. Scroll down to find the Gmail app. Open it and press "disable." Now all your Gmail will be routed through the stock e-mail client without being duplicated in Gmail.
P.S. - Gmail via Activesync is being discontinued to new users (legacy user's are protected) effective February 1, 2013.

Thanks for your reply. I have done the first part and it seems to be working. I see mails coming to the native mail app.
But I don't see an option to disable GMAIL app under app manager. All I have is force stop, uninstall updates, clear data, clear cache. NO other options. Am I missing something.

Oops. To disable an app you always have to uninstall any updates to it first. Once you do that you'll see the "disable" option.

Ok, I did it. It removed the gmail app. I guess I am good now. Thanks.
