Google sync on HTC hero with mail app?

After the new announcement for push email on the iphone using microsoft exchange, I have become interested in attempting this on my hero.
I know I can add gmail accounts to both the gmail app and the mail app on the hero, but there is a reason I want to try the exchange method. The gmail app gets push email, but the mail app doesn't. However, I much prefer the mail app on the hero, along with the mail widget. If using this method will work, it can mean I can use the mail app, along with push gmail.
Has anyone tried to add their gmail account to their hero using this method? I've tried, but it says it is unable to add the account. The account is verified successfuly, it just cannot be added. I'm not sure whether or not this is a temporary issue.
Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

I was unable to add an exchange account (gmail) this afternoon, but I am now able to do so. Probably too many people rush to try that earlier today.
I added my second gmail account as an exchange account, and then set sync frequency as "as items arrive" i.e. push. Emails indeed arrive very quickly.
The problem is, I cannot send email! I tried composing a new mail, or replying to a received email. After I press "Send", the mail app acted like the email was sent but the other side never it. What's more, I couldn't find the email I sent in the "Sent" or "Out" or "Draft" folders. Manually refreshing the account doesn't seem to work either. I don't know if this is the problem of the mail app, or the problem with gmail's server.
Another problem is, com.htc.provider got force closed very frequently... although it has no problem restarting itself.

Okay, now I realize the com.htc.provider problem is caused by Peep rather than Google Sync http://bit.ly/5uWoi
The problem about sending email still exist though, and some of my received emails are getting "error" as their subjects, although the bodies of the emails display fine.

Its the same for me:

I have the same problem. Maybe there's something wrong with Google's IMAP service? I have restored to an old backup just in case it was a settings issue but it still doesn't work.
Hope there is a solution soon.

Tried using the HTC Mail app and IMAP for Gmail seems to be working just fine. But the Google Mail app is still not working.
Any idea how to set the IMAP setting for the Google Mail app manually?

Don't mix up IMAP with Exchange (Google Sync).
IMAP for Gmail (or Google Apps) has been working perfectly for me, but IMAP does not support push.
Exchange Server for Gmail (or Google Apps) supports push and push email works fine. But it has problem sending out emails and some emails received has "error" as their subjects.
Why is Exchange Server for Gmail useful? Well, it is useful if you have more than one Gmail/Google Apps account (my first one is my personal Gmail account, and the second one is my university's Google Apps email account) The built in Gmail app support push, but it only support one account. Before Google enabled Exchange Server for Gmail yesterday, the only way to set up the other Gmail account is to set it up as a IMAP account. Now I can set it up as an Exchange Server account to get push email, however it is having problem mentioned above... I am not sure if this is a problem with Gmail's server or a problem with the HTC mail app.
To set up IMAP for Google App, just set it up as normal Gmail (i.e. imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, yes SSL), and enter the whole Google App email address as your username.
To set up Exchange for Gmail or Google App, use m.google.com as sever name and leave domain blank. Enter your Google account username and password, and if you are using Google App, enter the whole email address as username as above.

I love that Google added Gmail exchange support. IMAP Idle is close, but Exchange is true push which is necessary for some of us. I think IMAP Idle gives much better battery life though IMO

HTC Mail vs. Gmail App

Ok... so I've recently migrated to Android after several years of WinMo Standard - Windows CE - 5.0 - 6.0 - 6.1 - 6.5.
So far I like Android and I love this phone... never had anything has fast or with such a great screen.
With that being said I'm having several issues that I wanted to run by the people here and see what ya'll thought.
Quick setup background - I have two email accounts I like to use - Gmail and Yahoo. I have all of my conacts in gmail organized the way I like it. Also, I recently gave up on using MS Outlook to manage my contacts and calendar and now use Gmail and Google Calendar to manage those two exclusively.
So here goes my impression/questions/issues - hoping someone can shed some light on it.
In the past with WinMo I could set up POutlook to sync with gmail/g-calendar/google contacts by configuring m.google.com as my activesync/exchange server. Everything seemed to work great. Now however I cannot decide if I should set up the accounts on the INC to sync via exchange or google.
So first question - when using HTC Mail and setting up my gmail account as an exchange server account is it "true" push?
If it is why would anyone want to use the gmail app?
Next - when I set my calendar to sync via exchange it randomly takes my entries and duplicates them on places the duplicate on the day before the original one. Any idea why? When I remove the active sync calendar and have it sync with my google account everything is correct... this is strange to me since its pulling the same data from the same place, my google calendar.
I'm sure I'll add more confusing and rambling thoughts after I continue to mess with this thing.

from my understanding the gmail is instant push and the htc mail app refreshes every 5 minutes (minimum). if this makes a difference to you then it should make your decision easier. hope this helps

i had issues with gmail not pushing properly when set up as an exchange account via HTC mail. other than the push issue, i consider the HTC app superior in every way.

I just set the HTC mail to manual, turn off the notifications to HTC mail. I set gmail it notification on, then every time gmail pushes in the mail I check it with the HTC mail. After I check it the notification goes away.
This way you can still use HTC mail without it waisting battery power every 5 minutes pull checking.

If you set up your gmail account as an exchange account using m.google.com you can get push by changing your check frequency to "as arrive".
The issue I'm having is that the HTC Mail application wont open any attachments from my gmail account set up through exchange. I just get a message "The file cannot be opened because it is corrupted."
If I open with the gmail application it works fine

As a regular Gmail user, I find the Android Gmail app is superior to the HTC mail app. It gives me the same features I have when using a computer... like marking a star on a conversation, viewing different labels, and since I have multiple email addresses that my Gmail account polls, the Gmail app lets me see which of my email addresses was the recipient. It's right there in the label on the email list, without having to open each mail and look at the address information.
If you don't use Gmail, or have multiple email addresses that AREN'T automatically polled by your Gmail account, I'd agree that HTC Mail is nice. But for me it takes away too many of the nice Gmail features that I use. My $.02

This doesn't push. It pulls. If you look closely you will see a refresh icon flash in your notification bar every 5 seconds. Extreme battery usage.
As far as opening up your attachments, set it for Imap. Its the only way I got it to work for attachments.

Expect copy and paste from it, which I use a lot.

I found using the Gmail app and the HTC Mail separately, I was killing my battery faster.
What I ended up doing, was having GMail PULL my pop mail, and then I'd just pull it all through the gmail app. Helped my battery life a great deal.
Pro's - Everything in one place, Easy batch delete
Con's - I have to TELL it to load the entire message (Show Picture). In HTC I didn't have to do that.
Other than that, I'm happy to have everything centralized.

GMail V. Email App Question

So, the 'GMail' app is fast and efficient. However, I dislike the look and layout of it. Also, I cannot sync my secondary account with the default GMail app.
I like the Samsung 'Email' application, however, I find that it is too slow in pulling email from Google's servers. When I am sent an email, the default GMail app pings me before my desktop computer. Mail is instantly pushed to the phone, in a delightful way. Then, five minutes later, 'Email' notifies me of the same message.
Is there any way to make the Samsung Email application behave in this way (instant email notifications)? If so, awesome. I have the phone set to check for new emails every thirty minutes. If I lower this time, it still isn't as quick as the 'GMail' app.
If it is possible to somehow push emails to the 'EMail' app in a speedy fashion, then my second question would be: "Is there an easy way - besides deleting the GMail account from the 'GMail' app - to have only one Email program active at a time? Or, perhaps, is there a way to set priority between the two programs? :/

I don't think there is man. Google has developed a hybrid type active sync for pushing email to the Gmail app. This is one of the benefits of using a Android phone if you use Gmail. When it comes to other email apps/clients, Gmail will push using IMAP. My buddy who has a iPhone uses Google Sync and is jealous of how fast I receive my email. He actually got mad at Google for not using the same technology in Google Sync. That's just one of the benefits of using Android with the Gmail app. It gets you the fastest email outside of using Exchange or Active Sync.
Can't you just continue to use the Gmail app for your primary account and the Samsung email app for your secondary account? I have both of my Gmail accounts paired with the Gmail app and my Verizon and Work email synced with the Samsung app. I don't really need instant email on my secondary accounts. If you need yours to be instant then why don't you just forward all of your mail from your secondary account to your Gmail account.

No its not possible, exchange and Gmail (through Gmail client) are Push, other are not.

Well, my secondary account technically is a GMail account. My school has edu accounts through GMail, so the address ends in 'go.schoolname.edu'. Because of this, GMail has issues syncing that account (even though it is a Google Mail account).

You can have two accounts linked on the Gmail app. Press menu and then add accounts.

K-9 mail was able to do "instant" push via IMAP for me, but it really slowed my phone down. Try K-9 and if you find it slows your phone down too, try out MailDroid.
MailDroid doesn't slow my phone down at all and seems to do IMAP push well, but its a but light on features and polish.

You can import up to five other email accounts into your main gmail account. That way you only have to use the gmail servers for all your mail. I have all my pop mail linked to my gmail account and I get all my mail instantly. You can then label each account with a different color and filter them.

I've setup all my gmail accounts in my phone(3 gmail). And if you have other email accounts such as aol, hotmail etc you can add those account on one of your gmail (login to the web) and have gmail fetch all those emails that way you have push email on those account

Push E-Mail?

Could someone please explain how push e-mail functions on the HD2, WinMo 6.5?
How is it set up?
Will it work with any mail service (for example Gmail Imap)?
How does it differ from having the mail program check for mail every half hour or so?

Email that is delivered directly to the phone, automatically, as they arrive in the users inbox.

Do you mean the thread "Sync with Google"?
It involves installing a Google Sync app to the phone.
I'm not sure if I would want to do that. Probably a great reduction in battery life (as well as taking up memory), for the app to constantly check for new Google items to sync the phone with. (I wish I could figure out how to kill ActiveSync, so that it would only come on when I use it. I end it in TaskManager, and it starts right up again! Still worse if there were two such sync apps, constantly checking and syncing.
As far as it being Push, is it really? Would the Gmail server really know, every time one gets an e-mail, to send it to your phone?
Or, is it that Google Sync app, always running in the background, frequently checking online, to see whether a new piece of mail has comin in?

With Google sync you don't actually install an app. You basically set up your gmail account to act as an exchange server.
I have this set up on my phone now and get my emails almost as fast as if I has a BB..
Using this saves battery life compared to telling your phone to check since it doesn't actually have to keep checking on a schedule, it gets notified if you get an email and it is 'pushed' to the phone.

Hey Vectre, how do you justify Push E-Mail enabled saves more energy when it requires constant data connection VS connecting every hour, 4 hours, etc? In my experience, my battery drained faster with push on.

Personal experience actually. Maybe I just had the schedule check for email too liberally but it does seem to last longer. Best guess is that while the data connection is on it is not actually transmitting or receiving anything.
I will grant you it could simply be subjective, but it is my experience.

What if one has more than one GMail account? Can one set up two?
I guess too, for this to work one has to have ActiveSync set to automatic. In order not to have AS run constantly, many folks set up a fake Exchange server, just to be able to set the schedule to Manual. If it is set to manual, however, I don't see how the e-mail could "Push".
So, in setting up "Push" for a Gmail account, does one not use the Microsoft Push E-maikl setting at all? Or is that a different way to do it, including for Gmail?

Actually, at this time, my understanding is while you can have multiple email accounts you can only have 1 set up through exchange. I could be wrong, I haven't done in depth research.
Current reviews and reports say that Windows Phone 7 is supposed to support multiple exchange servers.. But we haven't actually seen it yet.

I'll tell you how I have my e-mail currrently set up on the HD2, which is the same way as I have set it up on other phones for years.
T-Mobile has a service where you set up your e-mail addresses with them (at mytmobile), and you can set it for them to send a text message every time you receive an e-mail. That message includes the sender, the subject line, date and time, I forget if any of the message. I think those alerts are free, do not take from one's store of text messages. I have that set.
Then--I do not have any automatic retrieving set up in e-mail. It is all manual.
So, I do get a message "pushed" to me, on receipt of all e-mails, from all accounts.
If I see that I received an e-mail that I want to read now on the phone, then I go to either the phone's mail app, or the gmail java applet (I use the latter more now), to read that e-mail.
I don't use any server in ActiveSync, yet I have a fake one set up, to enable me to set AS totally to manual. (You can find threads about that here). That way AS does not run all the time, is not constantly trying to sync, etc.

I used this on my previous winmo phone. When I tried to set it up for [email protected] it didn't seem to still be an option. That is why I set up google sync. At this time I am mostly using my gmail account so it works out just fine..

You mean the mail alerts from T-Mobile?
That is not something you set up on the phone, and has nothing to do with WinMo.
In fact, I had nothing to do, to set it up on my HD2. I had it set up already, worked on my previous (non winmo) phone, and it worked on my HD2, without any re-setting up.
You set it up at the T-Mobile web site. Log on to "My T-Mobile", with your user name and password, go to "configure e-mail". You can set up any e-mail accounts you have there--POP, IMAP, etc (including Gmail and others), and you can set it to send you a text alert for every e-mail received on any of the e-mail accounts you configure there.
It is completely phone-independent. Once set up, it will send those alerts to any phone you have, unless you turn it off. (If having a problem with it, call T-Mo CS.)

IMAP Exchange Email Stopped Working - Native Email App

Hi All,
I am receiving my Yahoo email and work IMAP email in the native Android email app. Yesterday afternoon, my IMAP email just stopped working. Yahoo is fine. I can send email, but not get email from the IMAP account.
I deleted the account, rebooted the phone and added the account back. All the settings are fine and check out, but it will not retrieve email.
I downloaded K9, and using the exact same settings, I can retrieve/send IMAP email without issues.
Any known bugs or ideas? The email is an exchange server, but we don't have active sync, so IMAP is used outside of work pc's.

I have a co-worker with a Sprint phone with Android on it (not sure which phone). She, too, is having troubles with IMAP with our work email as it will just stop sending/receiving emails periodically as well. This solves one problem in that I do not believe that this is just your phone. However, it creates two more problems in the sense that it is either Android problem or a problem with the email server.

I think it's an android thing. I have a few exchange accounts set up (first of all.. it does more than one... which is awesome), and the first time i sent an email my phone kept bouncing back with "can't send message" errors.. meanwhile.. the guys i sent the email to got repeat messages. one for every bounce back message I got. So it seems the built in email application isn't so great with emails. works fantastic with gmail though. I'm using a Touchdown trial. It's a $20 app. it's ok. i prefer the stock one.. .but it works fine so far.
