hi
I have google sync setup via ActiveSync exchange on me HD2 which works great.
only thing I can't get working is sending from another e-mail address that you can setup in your google account. outlook mobile doesn't let you change the from address but I have found it in the registry and changed it to my other e-mail address but when I send a mail it still shows as coming from googlemail address. Is this a exchange sever side setting or is there a way to get it to send from another email address. I would like this as it would save me adding all my accounts to Outlook mobile.
HD2 is so cool I have hardly used the laptop since getting it.
Thanks in advance if you can help.
Cheers
Dean
anybody any ideas on this one if not guess it's the long way round using other account to send smtp.

Overview: Known Limitations
Print
Google Sync for Windows Mobile is still in Beta. We're constantly working on improvements, but we've listed below some known limitations.
* Changing Order of Recurring Event May Remove From Device
If an instance of a recurring event is moved to the same day as the previous or the following instance of the same series, or if it is moved to occur before the previous or after the following instance of the series, the entire series will not be displayed on the device Calendar.
* Changes to Meeting Attendees on Device Aren't Synchronized to Server
If the list of invitees to a meeting is changed on the device, these changes will not be reflected on the server after synchronizing.
* Imported Recurring Events May Not Sync
If you've imported calendar entries from another calendar system into Google Calendar, you may find that only the first occurrence of the event is synchronized, or - in some cases - the event may not be synchronized at all. Recurring events created within Google Calendar will sync correctly.
*Calendar Invites via Gmail Forwarding or replying to Calendar invites in your Gmail inbox is not yet supported when using Google Sync for Mail.
* Apps Administrators: Learn how to enable Sync for your domain.
* Attachments Not Syncing: Google Sync is occasionally failing to properly process attachments. We are working on a fix that we hope to push soon.
* Custom From: Address: At this time Google Sync does not support custom "From:" addresses.

Hi,
same problem, but how would you do that manipulating-senderfield-thing with the other smtp-server? modify the smtp-server to replace [email protected] with [email protected]??
I've manage to come to a satisfactory solution staying with gmail...
I have set my other email addresses to forward all mail to gmail, so that I receive them through push. When I answer, as mentioned the e-mail originates from the gmail address. It doesn't bother me so much so far, I've set the From name to My Name (mobile), so people know why it might show up differently.
The real problem was when they answer, obviously only gmail will receive the answer, while I'd like to have it in my normal inbox as well for archival. So I've set filters on gmail so that all mail sent to "my gmail address" and containing "my normal address" (should be the case as they initially wrote the mail to it, which shows up in the included original message when replying, except for those few senders who don't include original message in replies) gets forwarded to my normal address.
If you only have one "normal" address you could just do an unconditional forward, but I preferred having gmail sort my 3 addresses correctly.
Yes this theoretically leads to an infinite loop (when gmail forwards to my normal server, the latter will forward again to gmail as it does this with every message it receives, etc), but gmail servers are clever and ignore it.

Could you eleborate on how you set those filters, I was looking for the same solution.
See below. Sorry for French gmail, but you should be able to find your way
the .ch address is one of my normal addresses, the gmail one is... well, the gmail one. I have one such rule for each of my normal addresses.

I have set up a new pop3 account with my home isp blueyonder. they had some problems the other day with sending email through there smtp server. Now my outbox (in folder view) shows 1 unread message; but if I go to look in the folder it is empty. I do not have "show only last 3 days" checked. if I connect to the account via webmail all looks fine. it appears that something is stuck on my vario 2. other than deleting the account is there any way of sorting this small annoying problem?
This happens when I send/receive via my gmail account on my phone. I'm currently investigating... I've also had an issue where Pocket Outlook doesn't correctly authenticate with the SMTP server (on my own personal address) before trying to send emails, resulting in 550 no unauthorised relaying allowed. Also investigating this, as my POutlook is setup correctly.
Just thought I'd let you know you're not the only one experiencing this issue.
Hi, sorry I can't be of some help to you on your issue, but this pocket outlook is so crap, on my accounts I have it set to automatically connect and check for mail...well if there is mail in my gmail inbox..read or unread..and it connects and checks for mail..it clears out my inbox, it will say I have messages and list the sender and subject in the notification, but the inbox will be empty, then theres the imap issue of not putting sent messages in the sent folder, very aggrivating to not have a decent mail client, I tried Flexmail..it lists gmail as an auto configure...but that's just bs...cause all that does is list the "@gmail.com" not any ports or ssl settings...so I manually configured it..then it spazzes on the password screen and won't continue, not to mention I set it as default one time I installed and it totally jacked up pocket outlook..which led to hard reset number 1.
Sorry to rant off topic, but after reading others woes about pocket outlook, I couldn't stfu
nice (sorry) to see others having problems too! from your replies I am doing well. I also noticed the IMAP problem too, when connecting to ny bluyonder account the webmails deleted items were "trash" and would not be deleted

Thanks for the info, I'll give that a shot..I had had it set to receive full copy of messages.
And sorry again about your post timbouk.
After the new announcement for push email on the iphone using microsoft exchange, I have become interested in attempting this on my hero.
I know I can add gmail accounts to both the gmail app and the mail app on the hero, but there is a reason I want to try the exchange method. The gmail app gets push email, but the mail app doesn't. However, I much prefer the mail app on the hero, along with the mail widget. If using this method will work, it can mean I can use the mail app, along with push gmail.
Has anyone tried to add their gmail account to their hero using this method? I've tried, but it says it is unable to add the account. The account is verified successfuly, it just cannot be added. I'm not sure whether or not this is a temporary issue.
Any input will be appreciated. Thanks.
I was unable to add an exchange account (gmail) this afternoon, but I am now able to do so. Probably too many people rush to try that earlier today.
I added my second gmail account as an exchange account, and then set sync frequency as "as items arrive" i.e. push. Emails indeed arrive very quickly.
The problem is, I cannot send email! I tried composing a new mail, or replying to a received email. After I press "Send", the mail app acted like the email was sent but the other side never it. What's more, I couldn't find the email I sent in the "Sent" or "Out" or "Draft" folders. Manually refreshing the account doesn't seem to work either. I don't know if this is the problem of the mail app, or the problem with gmail's server.
Another problem is, com.htc.provider got force closed very frequently... although it has no problem restarting itself.
Okay, now I realize the com.htc.provider problem is caused by Peep rather than Google Sync http://bit.ly/5uWoi
The problem about sending email still exist though, and some of my received emails are getting "error" as their subjects, although the bodies of the emails display fine.

I have the same problem. Maybe there's something wrong with Google's IMAP service? I have restored to an old backup just in case it was a settings issue but it still doesn't work.
Hope there is a solution soon.
Tried using the HTC Mail app and IMAP for Gmail seems to be working just fine. But the Google Mail app is still not working.
Any idea how to set the IMAP setting for the Google Mail app manually?
Don't mix up IMAP with Exchange (Google Sync).
IMAP for Gmail (or Google Apps) has been working perfectly for me, but IMAP does not support push.
Exchange Server for Gmail (or Google Apps) supports push and push email works fine. But it has problem sending out emails and some emails received has "error" as their subjects.
Why is Exchange Server for Gmail useful? Well, it is useful if you have more than one Gmail/Google Apps account (my first one is my personal Gmail account, and the second one is my university's Google Apps email account) The built in Gmail app support push, but it only support one account. Before Google enabled Exchange Server for Gmail yesterday, the only way to set up the other Gmail account is to set it up as a IMAP account. Now I can set it up as an Exchange Server account to get push email, however it is having problem mentioned above... I am not sure if this is a problem with Gmail's server or a problem with the HTC mail app.
To set up IMAP for Google App, just set it up as normal Gmail (i.e. imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, yes SSL), and enter the whole Google App email address as your username.
To set up Exchange for Gmail or Google App, use m.google.com as sever name and leave domain blank. Enter your Google account username and password, and if you are using Google App, enter the whole email address as username as above.
Hi tsekh501,
have you any news on this topic?
Would love to hear good / working news ... ;-)
Receiving "error" in the subject line here too. I am very interested to learn if any further progress been made..

I love that Google added Gmail exchange support. IMAP Idle is close, but Exchange is true push which is necessary for some of us. I think IMAP Idle gives much better battery life though IMO
How do you force the email client to always Load More Details or always show the complete email with full html. It initially shows up in txt, and I always have to click load more details. I want it to load details by default.
Thanks!
First of all, you can set how much email size you want to retrive in email settings. Assume you aleady set it to 'All', I'd guess you're encountering this issue receiving from Hotmail accounts. If so, this is a work around for Exchange sync deficiency on Hotmail server. Hotmail ActiveSync protocol does not officially suppor HTML email at all (I know it is lame for a MS server) at the declared protocol level. To work around this issue, email clients have to ignore the declared ActiveSync protocol version and go ahead assume it supports HTML anyway. This is how iOS and Windows Phone 7 works today. Samsung/Google seems to take a more conservative approach that it let you to force it to display HTML by click on the 'Load more details' button. If it is an true Exchange 2007 or later server, you don't need to click (and won't see) that button.
MS posted some length excuses about why it can't make Hotmail server compatible with ActiveSync 2.5 (which supports HTML email) protocol while Google has no problem make GMail support such protocol.

Thanks! This has been a BIG help. I didn't realize but your right. My paid for exchange account shows HTML email fine. But my hotmail account does not unless I push load more details. What if I switch the Hotmail account to a pop account. Would that help load emails as HTML?
Thanks!
Yes, it will but pop account has too many problems (sync issues, no push email featurs, no calendars, no contacts etc.). You just have to live with it for now.

Great! I have HTML email now. Its not push, but atleast I dont have to load more details anymore. Does POP not support folders? I only have my Inbox.
You've been a great help. I really appreciate it, this was very annoying until you resolved my issue.
Nope. Pop3 is one of the oldest protocol ever. So if you have multiple computers access the same account using pop3, it is very difficult to sync with each other. And it requires SMTP server for sending emails. Some networks won't let you pass out any SMTP mails for the sake of preventing email spammers.
Here is one of my work around:
I setup my gmail account to periodically grab emails from my Hotmail accounts from me and put a label on these emails. So all my emails goes into GMail with Hotmails with proper label. You can even setup your GMail (on the web account settings) to reply your email with your Hotmail as your return email address. This way, you get easy email management from GMail as well as proper HTML email support.

I thought I was going crazy. I used iPhone 4 before and I didn't have any problem using Hotmail exchange (ActiveSync) and work Exchange. Now I have to click "Load more details" all the time on Galaxy Tab, and Infuse. It's bit of pain. I think it's more to do with the email client. If I use TouchDown or Hotmail (new from MS) client, they don't have issues.
I hope Samsung release new updated email clients.
Thanks,
You more than likely right. Its the email client, b/c the HTC Flyer and my HTC EVO3D don't have these issues.
Strange to attribute it to Samsung, Microsoft, etc., because Hotmail works normally (automatically loads all details) on Samsung's Galaxy Nexus phone. Why do they make it work (let it work?) there but not on the Galaxy tab?
Curious if anyone else has encountered this issue or may know if a solution.
I like to use the stock email app instead of the Gmail app. I setup my gmail account to sync via ActiveSync/Exchange instead of IMAP. However, this doesn't work on my Nexus 4. I get the following error:
Code:
You don't have permission to sync with this server. Contact your server's administrator for more information.
I find this highly strange as I setup all my android devices in this same manner and don't have any issues with the others. I know I have entered all the information correctly since I could probably do it blind and hands tied behind my back I've done it so many times...
Oh, and this seems to happen on both pure stock Android and CM10.1.. only one my nexus 4
Any thoughts or ideas would be great.

See the announcement part of this post.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/30/google-exchange-activesync/
We reached out to Google and received this confirmation: "As announced last year, our plan is to end support for new device connections using Google Sync starting January 30, 2013. With the launch of CardDAV, it's now possible to build a seamless sync experience using open protocols (IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV) for Gmail, Google Calendar and Contacts. We'll start rolling out this change as planned across all platforms but will continue to support Google Sync for Windows Phone until July 31, 2013."
Wow... so I'm forced to either use Gmails crappy IMAP or use the official Gmail app which I despise. Thanks for the info. I read something about that but for some reason thought it only applied to non-android devices... must have mis-read.
Now if only I can trick my Nexus 4 into thinking it's my SGSIII or Gnex...
I'm in the exact same situation as OP and stumbled on this post in search for a solution...

This is the solution I've come up with:
Create an Outlook.com email account
Go to Settings -> More Mail Settings -> Your Email accounts
Click "Add a send-only account" and enter your gmail address. Follow instructions to complete tast
Change "Default "From" Address" to your Gmail address
Log into your Gmail and go to settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP
Add your Outlook.com address and forward all mail to that address
Setup the email app up on your android device to connect to your Outlook.com account via ActiveSync (m.hotmail.com)
Done
I know its all really simple and not needed but see the attached screen shot.
It sounds like a pain in the ass but it works almost just as well. You will continue to receive your gmail on other devices just as you always have. When you reply to an email with your device that is syncing up with outlook.com, as outlined above, it will still be shown as coming from your Gmail address. Read the text below "Default "From" Address" in Outlook.com settings.
Email delivery is not as fast as directly connecting to gmail via ActiveSync, but it's not a 5 minute delay as it would be with IMAP either. Anyway, it's not ideal but in my opinion it's better than using the Gmail app.

I have the same problem. No fix there yet?
Within the Calendar app, how do you modify an event (meeting)?
I can view the details of an event, but I don't see how to say change the date and/or time.

More details...I can modify the meetings that are from my google calendar without issue. Apparently it is just the meetings from my work calendar that I can't modify (though I can copy and delete). Is there perhaps some obscure setting within the mail accounts that enables/disables this?
Seems to work for me for calendar items I created with Outlook under my ID.
I can modify Outlook calendar items from my phone as long as I created them with the same ID that is set up with ActiveSync.
If you are set up the same as me, maybe an exchange setting is preventing you from being able to modify them from your phone?
For anyone who has this problem...
My email address at work is <first name>.<last name>@<company name>.com. My IT guy informed me a while back that I shouldn't include the . between my names when configuring my phone to connect to the exchange server. He said the exchange server would automatically handle it. And although this allowed me to get my email it was causing me a couple issues. The first was that I couldn't modify meetings that I had scheduled on my PC from my phone. The second was that no matter the setting I would always get emailed a copy of any emails I sent from my phone.
I deleted my account and re-added it back in with the dot and now everything works great.

They probably had an alias set up for your email address. This would not work for others unless their exchange admins had done the same.
This is probably why not all functions were working for you, since all an alias does is redirect mail from an incorrect account name (or alias) to the correct one.
