Any help I will take... I'm having the worst luck with my aquired droid x stock with .621 system update... I know its a terible idea for a first time rooter.. I did manage to get root, and i have verified it with root checker app. current settings are as listed:
2.3.5 android version
2.6.32.9geadffa3 kernal
4.5.604 system version (after the .621 linux root)
As far as i can tell everything is fine with the root process i did, if not maybe someone could tell me im wrong by my current system versions??
I did use the milestone sbf (i assume) this is the tutorial i used youtube.co m/watch?v=UtD4lQW8Rmg
I can't get rom manager to reboot into recovery, this is also the only app i have downloaded after the root.
I cant get any rom to manually install from sd card either. I know i am doing something wrong, just dont know what. There are tons of threads on this .621 problem and i cant quite skim them all down to my particular problem. Literally all i have achieved is rooting and i am starting to wonder if that is even right.
I would love any help possible especialy as far as usuable roms with this root and how to install them with this kernal...
Thanks in advance for any advice!
don't use rom manager, most rom you can download though it, will not work
I would just flash back to 621 with
ezSBF 621 and root .iso
then there are several compatible roms links in my list

Ok i am reflashing it now using your method.. so what bout making a restore before the rom, i couldnt get that to work either with rom manager and CWM.. dont use either an just manually load the rom from sd card? i know these questions are stupid to you, i am new and learning, sorry and ty so much for your time.
you need a bootstrap first, to get cwm working, I just use Droid 3 Bootstrap
links and directions
[HOW TO] Install/Use Droid 2/X/3 Bootstrap
will i need the bootstrap no mater what? reason i ask is the girly got the card with her, i aint got a way to buy it atm
you need bootstrap to use cwm, you need cwm to make nandroid backups and flash roms
just use the modified DX bootstrap, in my link
man, i know i gotta be getting on your nerves. i still dont see a link to the modified bootstrap. i only see instructions and a video link
under install, there is 3 options
droid 3
modified dx
droid 2
link will take you here

Ive had another Android phone, but in that case I had an unlocked bootloader and full access to custom ROMs. SO I am a lil weary at the whole Locked Bootloader, but Rooting is too important to ignore.
From what I understand, doing an SBF just puts you back at stock, so SBFing when you are stock doesn't do much, but do I need to backup before I try a new ROM? Or anything of the such?
Also - Is using ADB to root the recommended method? I'm very familiar with ADB, and have no problem using it.
What are the top ROMS? There seems to be so so many - and so spread out, are they basically just alternate themes and bloat removed, with a few changes in apps? I notice a few replace Blur apps with Aosp, which is nice in some cases, and a few replace the framework with generic Android completely.
Also - Again, I heard that the Droid 2 was able to be over-clocked by adding a module temporally during an active session, that would be lost after a reset, but I cant find this anywhere. Any help?
Is Hardware Acceleration enabled on stock? Also, are there any local.prop / build.prop changes that are recommended?
Any and all help would be appreciated! Once I get used to the different phone, I'll be more than happy to do some theme development on the Droid 2!
Thanks all!
z4root is the best way to root the D2:

It's always good to do a backup before flashing ROMs.
Also note that you can't install a custom recovery due to the locked bootloader. Instead you will need to get Koush's Bootstrap Recovery app (from the market for $2.00). After you root, install the bootstrap, hit bootstrap recovery (grant su permission), then after it says success, hit reboot recovery to get into clockworkmod. You'll only have to hit bootstrap recovery once, unless you change ROM's.
As far as overclocking, loading custom modules manually can be very confusing. I suggest getting D2 Overclock app from the market (its like $1.50 and well worth it). Has profiles just like setcpu as well.
The top ROMs seem to be Liberty and Fission (both de blurred), however Apex is also a good ROM. If you like Blur, I'd go with Squidly 2.3.20
Hope this helped some.
Alot of information thanks alot! Is Koush's Bootstrap the only way? Im broke atm and dont have $2.00 in my paypal! Guess I'll just have to wait a week to try some roms! lol
Yeah the bootstrap is the only way. I read that koush's blog had a free version to download but it seemed the download link was down. Maybe try googling for it.

I wouldn't want to accidentally grab the paid version and grab it though, I would feel bad. I'm a developer myself, and don't want to do him wrong. He has personally helped me in the past - Id hate if I did that!
If I use TI backup, and Uninstall an app - will SBF restore it?

Sbf returns the phone to stock, like ruu's for htc phones, so all data and apps are wiped.
And your right, its always good to donate, even if you get the app free.

Its called Droid 2 Bootstrap Recovery. Here is a link to koush's blog

It wasn't there, but I did find it, and am installing Libery now! We will see what happens!
Edit: Liberty is a very well done rom, even with its disadvantages! However, When I go to install a them, Clockwork gives an error saying the zip is bad, any ideas?
Most, if not all, the themes in the toolbox can be found In the forums, I'm too lazy to link em tho.

Aw that sucks big time. Glad you didn't pay though.
Ok so as my previous post stated I just got my droid x and rooted it. I am in the process of installing a rom but have failed at this point.
For starters I have the droid x bootstrap installed and "running". Buy "running" I mean I can get to the clockwork recovery but only buy the bootstrap button or battery pull for 1min then boot. Booting while holding the home button stops at the exclamation android guy. I cant get past it no matter how hard I push the search button . So thats one of my problems but not a big one.
When I went to install liberty 1.5 I did a data factory reset and catch wipe then installed the rom. It got stuck on the liberty logo. So I tried again this time following the guide on these forms on how to install a rom correctly. Same thing. I tried three more times following three different guides and still was stuck at the liberty logo. So I gave up and followed the install guide on these forms again, but just restored from my backup. I am good and running again but I still have the liberty logo, which from what I read is normal.
When I got home from work I started digging into why it didn't work and found several things that may cause it. Now this is where I get lost. I have read the sometimes it just fails and you need to try again. But I also read the doing a SBF will also fix this. So I dug into what a SBF is and how to do it since this seams to be the #1 fix for everything. WHAT, UHH, MMMMM, K. So I read you will need to flash 2 files to SBF successfully. I have no problems with the RSD lite as it is only one file and you cant screw that up. But then I comes to choosing the right SBF file for your phone I get lost. All the versions listed are WAY below what I have. I am currently on 4.5.588. So I jumped over to androidforms to see if theirs anything their. They list x.x.596 as the most recent OTA but when I go to check for updates it says there are none.
SO, my questions are:
Is the reason I cant flash the liberty rom because I am running 4.5.588?
What do I flash if I need to SBF?
What am I missing about this OTA update? Is it being rolled out now or is my rom the most recent OTA?
Is their anything else I need to know that might help me in the future? Like I said I am new to this area of the forms and have not clew whats being released, changed, rooted, or what ever else.
I came from a rooted eris so Im not root dumb. But their is a big difference between the eris and the X.
ANY HELP WOULD BE AWESOME THANKS!!!!!!!!

The new 2.3.3 OTA is stable and very nice looking on my DX, OTA not rootable yet but give it time.
Biggest life saver about the DX is the the part of the phone that ppl mess up and turn their phones to bricks is extremely safe on the X, not bulletproof but all the info in these forums I believe can bring them back regardless of what happens. I was very overwhelmed at first with my X but very comfortable now that ive successfully managed the sbf.
Yeah that's one of the things I really noticed. If you brick your phone it seams its not the end. So im still a little confused with your explanation on SBFing. You say that 2.3.3 is the latest OTA but its not rootable. So am I looking at the wrong number when I say my version is 4.5.588.

your looking at the version of the software build, complete jargon here but say your on android 2.2.1 version blah blah blah, what i was referring to was although you may have a higher version of 2.2.1 than what you are reading, a lower version of a higher android software such as 2.3.3 is better than a higher version of 2.2.1 same page?
I have a question. I downloaded and used Droid 2 Bootstrap Recovery after rooting and before ROMing my Droid 2. Now I need to download and use ROM Manager to get an update to to the ROM I am using (Miui). When I go into ROM Manager, it wants me to flash CWM before doing anything. Since I already have CWM (thanks to D2BR) how would this affect it? I know it would update it, but would my back ups be saved and would it mess with D2BR? Thanks in advance.
*Droid 2 info in sig*
edit: Just realized that the back ups get saved to the SD card. So they'll be fine.
All those views and no answer yet? Come on, someone has to know something. I really want to download this update before the next release. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not sure if it would mess with anything. I would use Bootstrap to flash all my ROMs. Even the ones I download in ROM Manager. They will be in the "clockwork" folder then go to "download"

The thread that's below mine (at the moment) had issues when flashing CWM from ROM Manager after using Bootstrap. That's why I am a little nervous about doing it. *Turns out he used RM first then bootstrapped. That could be the problem.*
Yeah, I would of used Bootstrap to flash it, I just need ROM Manager to actually get it. Would I need to clear the cache first? Thanks for the help.
edit: Guess I'll give it a shot, see what happens. Will update.
Took the plunge. No problems. Was able to successfully update Miui. Thanks for the help.
So I got a Milestone X from Cellcom about 2 weeks ago and rooted it the other night. I have heard that the Milestone X is practically the same as the Droid X. I have superuser and all that stuff so the root did go through and I used rooting instructions for a Droid X. When I used Droid X Bootstrap though and went into clockworkmod recovery and tried to update it, it said the update.zip file was missing. (E: Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory). Installation aborted.)
My question is, if I get a Droid X update.zip would it work the same? I'm kind of worried about bricking my phone since its less than a month old but if it does get bricked, will the Droid X unbricking stuff work the same?
Sorry if this is a stupid question

What exactly were you trying to flash in cwm? You do not have to rename your zips to "update.zip" you can install zip from sdcard if you cracked the recovery with DX bootstrap app...

Well originally I was trying to install just the update file which I got installed in the last couple minutes but now I'm trying to install Cyanogen 6. I haven't tried any other mods besides that so I'm not sure if its just not compatible or what..
Pretty much I'm brand new to Android modding so I know pretty much nothing and haven't read up on it because I'm not sure if its the same as a Droid X.
**** it. Never mind. I had to factory restore my phone because apparently the "update" I did reverted it to 2.2.1 and I couldn't get service and my SD card wasn't being recognized so I couldn't do a restore... I try again later when I know more about my phone..

What method did you use to root seeing as its cellcom because my friend has one with cellcom but z4 root didn't seem to work
I used superoneclick root on the pc to root my Milestone X on cellcom. I have yet to find a way to flash cm7 and not lose my data settings on cellcom. I have not tried using the Droid2 bootstraper method... Considering trying it... I want CM7! lol
Up until today I never did anything to my droid x as far as rooting and roms. I kept everything completely factory and android was at its latest version which is gingerbread 2.3.3 and system version 4.5.605.MB810.Verizon.en.US.
My goal today was to finally experiment this and install Liberty Rom. I completely failed because of all the version complications and plenty of other errors. Before I describe my final problem I should backtrack and let you know exactly what I did today so you can possibly get me out of this mess.
1. The very first thing I did was follow all of the steps at a forum on droid-life "How To: Get Rooted Gingerbread On DROID X" sorry it won't let me post the link.
After all of this I ended up with gingerbread again, but I guess a rooted version. No idea why this was the tutorial I followed when trying to install liberty. Throughout the tutorial I ended up buying "Droid X BootStrapper" because the tutorial had me use it.
Right after this tutorial I bought an app called Rom Toolbox for $5.00 downloaded Liberty through it and was trying to install through it. Every time it rebooted I would get a black screen. Never worked so many issues probably because I flashed the wrong sbf or something.
Here are the programs that I ended up buying today:
z4root (free), DroidXBootStrapper ($2.00), Rom Toolbox ($5.00).
That is everything I have done and all of the apps I own. Can someone please start fresh and give me short instructions to start from scratch on how to get the latest and greatest version of Liberty on my droidx from where I'm stuck at now. I want to completely start over and I am willing to do anything. I hope the apps I bought help and I also want to assume 2 of them probably do the same thing and I didn't need them.
Buying those tools will at least help support 2 members of the community (Koush & JRummy).
I'm pretty sure Z4Root does not work on the GB versions of DX firmware. That's probably why nothing is working. You aren't actually getting root.
you are on the .605 version of GB (when you see references to .602, .605, etc ...)
To get root, start here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258599
You may also want to download the Droid2 recovery rather than the DX. The D2 version is a little newer and I think avoids a slight bug on later kernels when Debug is on. The D2 version works just fine on the DX. It can be downloaded free from here:
http://www.koushikdutta.com/2010/08/droid-x-recovery.html
Once you are rooted and have recover properly working, you should be able to use the Rom Toolbox to download and install Liberty. Just make sure you read carefully about the 'version' requirements on any ROM.
Oh ok so I was rooting it wrong.
I easily rooted the phone using Pete's Motorola Root Tools. I realized that Rom Toolbox Pro accesses clockwork recovery when the phone is rebooted instead of the phone just restarting fully. But, I still want to start fresh and do everything from the start again. Please let me know if you have any suggestions in the way or order I am doing things. My phone is currently up rooted at 4.5.596 and rooted by Pete's Motorola Root Tools but I want to start over from the beginning so here is what I am going to do:
Note: Before I do anything I am going to format my SD card for a fresh start.
1. Use RSD_Lite 4.9 to Flash my phone back to 2.3.340 using a file called VRZ_MB810_2.3.34_1FF_01.sbf. I always do this part with no problem.
2. Do a hold power+home then search and do a system wipe/restore. Then Activate service, sign into gmail etc.
3. Now that the OS is loaded (the old version with the grey bars 2.3.340) I am going to root my phone using Petes Root Tools. (I hope I can root it with this tool when the firmware is this version.)
4. Put the 3 zip files I have on my SD card to upgrade to GB 588. Also put my GB 596 file on here.
5. I will download 1 app. D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install all 3 zip files from SD card. Now I boot up in GB 588.
6. Now I go right back into D2BootStrapper. Bootstrap recovery, reboot into recovery. Install GB 596. Now I have GB 596 rooted and loaded.
7. After this, shouldn't I be able to download Rom Manager Premium and Rom Toolbox Pro and test as many roms as I want? always reverting back to my original backup.
I noticed after installing liberty I was getting all kind of force close popups. And the phone wouldn't connect to service. But then I just held power + home then hit the up/down arrows and did a wipe/restore and it loaded liberty and everything works. Is this normally what has to be done when installing roms?
If there is anything wrong with my process please let me know. Whew I can't believe all that I learned in 1 day.
You've got a lot of steps there that really aren't necessary. When you install a ROM like Liberty, it replaces EVERYTHING in /system. Thus, about all that is left from a .596, .588, .602, etc install is the kernel. The Kernel doesn't change very often in Motorola builds. The last change was on .602. Thus, for your purposes there is no difference between .602 and .605 (FYI, .605 was just a keyboard fix over .602).
So, if you search around, you should find an SBF or AIO flash file to get you to .602.
Or you can simply take the OTA update from VZW after SBF'ing to .340
Once you've flashed your Rom, be sure to clear data/factory reset. You should then start with a clean system.
Alright, if you don't mind can you please let me know what steps I can avoid.
I didn't think it was possible to have a rooted .605 but I guess I was wrong.
So my goal should be to get to .605, then root it. Then install roms from there?
On your first post you said you were on .605. I'm assuming that is still the case.
If so, then root it with pete's tool (I think you've already done that).
Install D2bootstrap, then ROM Toolbox and install your rom from there.
I have to be honest, in that I've not used Liberty in a while, nor have I used Rom Toolbox. It shouldn't be a problem, just make sure that the version of Liberty you are using is for the GB kernel. Some of the older versions of Liberty (Which I did use, and like) were for the Froyo kernel (in that case, stay on .340 and do your upgrades).
Make sure you wipe data in recovery after installing the ROM. Lots of 'Boot Loops' are due to not wiping data after flashing a new rom.
Yeah
Yeah I read up on all of that. I actually might not end up going with Liberty. Going to try others like ICX. But before I do any of this I need to get to .605.
No I am not at .605 I believe that's where my phone was before I started all of this.
Right now I am flashing back to 2.3.34
Once I am back up and running there. Can you please recommend the easiest way to get to .605 and that will be my final question.
.605 should update automatic. If not you can disable the updater using titanium backup by freezing system updater.
1. Use petes tools install cwm as well
A. Droid x bootstrap get this
B. Titanium backup. Backup your apps
2. Make a backup using cwm and backup apps with tb
3. Put the rom zip files on the sd card.
4. Reboot to recovery. Reformat system data etc
DO NOT REFORMAT THE SD CARD.
5. Wipe cache davik etc.
6 flash rom. And reboot.
7 run tb for your apps
Should be a smooth and clean install. The roms are already rooted so no need to worry about that. Hope this helps

I would point you to a link here, but couldn't find a quick/easy link to what I wanted.
In this list is an SBF file for .602. Since you seem comfortable with doing SBF's, I would just SBF straight to .602 and root it from there.
Don't know much about ICX, but would encourage you to look at the CM7DXGB thread over at Rootzwiki as well.
ohh, well I just went to Settings > About Phone and its auto updating to .605
Am I not going to be able to root it after this update or should it be fine.

Pete's Root tool should root .605 just fine.
One last thing
As far as Clockwork recovery goes.
Should I always be in the latest version 5.0.2.0 (the blue version)
Or the old version 2.something (the green version)
Why is there 2 version and why would I ever want to flash back to the old version 2.something?

Couple things most of the updates are to add support fix minor bugs etc.
I run the one from petes all the time I forget which version. I haven't had problems.
On my mt4g slide I had to flash a modified verson of clockwork due to my phone being newer and not as much support
With that said its not a difficult process to get a new recovery image. You would need terminal emulator and root explorer. Couple of great guides on here on how to do so. Also other methods as well.
All in all the ones that pete's give you should suffice. Unless your one of the extreame types of people who want the newest or like messing around.
Just remember backups can make the process and hassle of soft bricking your phone much easier to fix and takes a few mins to do.
Look around the forums lots of great information from the devs, experts, etc

The newer version changes the way backups are stored. The new format is smaller and quicker.
Among other issues/bug fixes as mentioned before, but the backup issue is important as the new version will not restore the old style backups.
