I am trying to add a file to the /sys folder to experiment with a tweak but access is denied.
I have tried using adb / root explorer / shell and I have tried changing the permissions to 777 but it does not work. I have full write access to /system and the other folders.

I just used a guide to root my MT4G with adb and gfree_4 and it worked perfect. loaded up hboot s = off and all, however when I tried the genius button remap guide I couldn't change the system r/w assess using root explorer. what gives?
What happens if you do
adb shell
su
or you can try
adb remount
known issue there is fix, I just downloaded an app "mount /system rw" that works perfectly fine for me
So is the fix just to use mount /system app or is there a perm fix? I can't get metamorph to istall because of this issue. Mine seems to come and go, sometimes Root Explorer can mount r/w in system and sometimes it can't.
I used it as a permanent fix
adb pull /default.prop
open in text editor and make sure that ro.secure=0
then adb push back to /
should allow you RW
I have a Razr M on verizon, not the developers version, android 4.1.1 build 9.8.10_27-2
I'm trying to root so that I can run some programs like Fox-Fi wireless tether, and every method for rooting I've found so far is just a script to push some files onto the /system folders or /data folders.
Now my /system and data folders are read only, and I don't have permissions to chmod or re-mount. I can't use su to get permissions without first writing to those folders (and I can't write without su and so on).
So how do I fix this? I either need root to su or sudo, or i need r/w file system. How do I get one, without the other?

Would someone please tell me how to change permissions on a read-only system file? I logged into and adb shell, I have root, but I could not execute this command: "chmod 777 HotspotProvision.apk" or "mv HotspotProvision.apk". I get an error saying the file is read-only.
I am trying to follow the instructions in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2456338
I also could not change the file name using Astro file manager.
Root explorer or root browser from the market will let you mount system r/w

Quick question.
I'm trying to drop a couple files needed for Tasker in /system (/framework and /etc specifically) using ES File explorer. Unfortunately ES fails to grant write access (rooted obviously). Is there any easier way about this? I could download an android terminal emulator, but I'll be honest, I'm not terminal savvy. Chmod 777? Default is 755? ADB is possible, but really not preferred as my ouya is in the living room, and my desktop is not...(also, I'm not familiar with adb )
Thanks.
Never mind, I was mixing permissions and mounting. I found the option to remount /system as rw and that did the trick.
Before posting, I searched the forum but could not find this discussed. As the title indicates, I am trying to add a file to /system/media/audio/notifications (or /ringtones, or even trying to rename a file in these folders) using Root Explorer but the folder is RO and will not mount RW. I tried other apps to mount the folder and also tried adb command line, but all failed. I noticed that some of the folders in root are RW but it seems that "system" folders are not. Would appreciate any help I can get.

After spending more time researching this issue, I found the following solution which I tested on my rooted 7.1.1 Axon 7 (unlocked, TWRP). After executing the command listed below using adb shell, I was able to mount RW and write to /system/media .....
To allow /system be r/w :
adb reboot disemmcwp
And to revert it back :
adb reboot emmcwpenab
