Can't delete with root explorer

I'm trying to delete a default application from my droid (WriteandGo) by deleting both the .apk and .odex file from /system/app using root explorer.
The phone is rooted, in Root Explorer and the partition appears mounted as r/w. When I delete both files it works fine and they disappear, but when I go back and then return to the app folder the files are there again. The application never gets uninstalled.
Any ideas?

Thanks, it does work, but I'm curious as to why root explorer is failing to delete the files..

That is because the /system partition is mounted read only.
To mount read-write, install ADB.
Set phone to USB debug.
Then:
> adb shell
$ su
# mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/stl6 /system
Then go the the appropriate directory and remove the files with "rm".

So the info Root Explorer is supplying (that the partition is mounted as r/w) is wrong? That's odd, because I've managed to copy a file to /system/etc/.

[Q] Trouble restoring "/system/app"

I (without heeding the warnings) decided it would be a good idea to delete certain apps (including Hero of Sparta, Lets Golf, etc.) once I got my tablet rooted. Luckily, there are two A500's in my household, so I was able to copy the /system/app directory from the other untouched tablet.
Problem is, I can't seem to copy the directory (or any apps from it) into my tablet. I've used both ASTRO and File Manager HD, but in both, the 'paste' command is greyed out. It's as if I don't have the necessary permissions.
So, what's going on?

did you set the Read-Write permission on that directory?

Upon attempting to edit permissions, though, using a terminal emulator, I get an error after typing this:

su
cd /system/app
chmod 777 /system/app
And the error I get is:
"Unable to chmod /system/app: Read-only file system"

Silly question, but do you have your system rooted?

Yes, I do. Using GingerBreak as I'm still waiting on that 3.1 update

OK, then try a file explorer like Root Explorer and you should be able to set the rights ro R/W and copy your files over.

Root Explorer worked like a charm. I'm suprised File Manager HD doesn't perform those functions. I got a good feeling when I saw that Root Explorer was requesting superuser permission.

Glad to hear that worked. Root Explorer is what I use. Have been for over a year. I think File MAnager HD can also do it, but it is not as straight forward ad Root Explorer. Have fun.

BTW the permission setting 0777 means anyone can access it (or any other application), for the sake of having a better security the permissions should be changed to 445 so only root can access and execute those files (I'm not sure if APKs are considered excutables if they are not the 444 will be the right setting)

Does anyone know where to get the busybox binary that will work on the nexus 10? Also, how do you manually copy it to the system folder? I'm rooted and on the stock ROM. File explorer used to have an option to remount a partition in read write mode but am not seeing this option now. Anyone know the syntax to remount the system partition with write? I have root and can get shell on the file system.

You can grab busybox off the market, things like esFile explorer , root explorer, has options to remount RW , or you could just install a custom manta kernel ..

I unrared 19mountsdboot-rev2.rar, and 19mountsdboot is in /sdcard/Download.
My problem is when I try to copy that file to /etc/init.d. Using Terminal Emulator,
cd /etc/init.d
cp /sdcard/Download/19mountsdboot .
cp: can't create './19mountsdboot': Read-only file system
Using ES File Explorer, I also get a "Read-only file system" error.
What am I missing?

/etc/init.d is a root location. You must have root access and /system set to r/w.
So set terminal emulator in su (root) mode. Type su enter and the prompt will change to a #. Then you can try it. Set /system to r/w.
Also ES File Explorer must also be put in root mode and set /system to r/w before you can do it.
Edit: if you use the flashable zip, it does everything for you. Just put that zip into the boot partition of the SD and boot to SD recovery. It will install automatically. And it puts it in /data so it survives the update to a new ROM. I highly recommend you use that method.

fix file permissions

When i try to edit files in the root directory of the switch on android, i cannot edit because of permissions.
I ran chmod in TWRP from terminal multiple times but cannot fix the permissions issue.
anyone know how to fix it? I am trying to edit some files in system/usr/keylayouts.

Try 'sudo su' and then do chmod.
Or install MiXPlorer, give it root access and give it the perms with it's GUI (it's under the info sign when u select the file u want to alter)
