Change /System permissions - Ouya General

Quick question.
I'm trying to drop a couple files needed for Tasker in /system (/framework and /etc specifically) using ES File explorer. Unfortunately ES fails to grant write access (rooted obviously). Is there any easier way about this? I could download an android terminal emulator, but I'll be honest, I'm not terminal savvy. Chmod 777? Default is 755? ADB is possible, but really not preferred as my ouya is in the living room, and my desktop is not...(also, I'm not familiar with adb )
Thanks.

Never mind, I was mixing permissions and mounting. I found the option to remount /system as rw and that did the trick.

Help me make a file executable.

Thanks for helping me out.
My Vibrant is rooted. When I adb shell into my phone and try to ./file or chmod 755 file it gives me a permission denied.
I believe I am already running as su in the terminal. Anyway I can get Android to let me modify the file? The file in question in on my sdcard, not in /system.
Thanks!

/sdcard is mounted noexec, you can't mark files executable on it. You could remount it, but it's handled by vold so you probably meted to change the configuration for vold to get it to stick. If you are trying to run a script, use "sh script.sh".

[Q] Some system maps

Hi Every body,
In quit new in Android.
I just finaly rooted en S-Off my Desire.
Now I want to copy a file in to a system map, but I cant safe in that map.
Is there a way that I can Chmod the right, so I can Copy too their.
Check the file system you're trying to copy to, it might well be mounted as read-only. If you have permanent root you should be able to remount it as read/write.

You need to mount /system as read/write :
Code:
mount -o remount,rw /system
Make your changes, then when you're done :
Code:
mount -o remount,ro /system

No, you need to remount the /system file system (/system/media/audio/notifications) is just a directory within that file system.
Then go into that directory and make any changes that you need to. Then remount it as read-only when you're done.

Check your steps again. I just created a new file in that directory fine.
Did the su work ?
You're not typing that "#" symbol, are you ? That's the command prompt when you're root.

The problem is ES File Explorer isn't running as the root user. So you can do a "chmod 777 /system/media/audio/notifications" then it will work.

Are you not comfortable doing it via the command line ? There is an "experimental" option within ES File Explorer to let it run as root, but I just tried it, and it doesn't work on the stock ROM.
I checked and it looks like one of the other main explorers, Astro, doesn't work as root either.
Maybe try the Root Explorer app (hmm, though I see you have to pay for it) ? Anyone else have recommendations ?

If you are willing to pay for the "Root Explorer" app, which you will find on the Android market, then that should do what you want (i.e. give you a file explorer app that will work as root).

I Tried it all to get root..... Finally got root, but without R/W access

Ok.... I have googled them all and done a search on this website and have found nothing that is similar to my situation. I hate when people ask questions that are found in other forums and would not want to do the same... but I don't feel my situation is in the realm of that.
I followed all the basic ways of rooting and none worked for me. I did the Visionary (ver 14) root and root.zip (/root to sdcard), etc.... didn't work.
Finally Id/l Visionary for temp root.... and I followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996.
I got S=OFF, but had to 'sync' in terminal 5 or 6 times to be able to get su to work.
I finally get su to work (# instead of $ in terminal) and all the programs that require root to work do as they are supposed to. The main issue I have, is that without running visionary (with R/W access), I cannot delete files without it warning that I have read only access.
I thought if I had root access, I wouldn't need to set up Write access.
Once I run visionary, and delete *.apk files that came with my phone, they do stay away perm.
I just want to know if there is a way to keep the R/W access without visionary since I know I am in root.....
Root access is a separate entity from S-off, and that a separate entity from /system partition read/write mounting. That partition is read/only at boot. You can make it writable with adb, with Root Explorer, or with a linux mount command.
HTC Glacier running CM7 #33
root explorer has a button to push to mount r/w, or if you have adb setup you can plug in your phohne and type
adb remount
and you'll be r/w
or you can use terminal emulator and type
su
mount-o,remount -rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
exit
and you'll be r/w

I see two typos in the command. There should be a space between mount and -o, and no comma between the -o and remount. Thus:
Code:
# mount -o remount -rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p25 /system
Of course, "adb remount" from a nearby PC is so much easier.
Thanks. I just woke up when i started typing that.
and the , will work with no space. Both methods are fine.
Thanks guys!
On another note, do either one of you know if you can mount the phones system folder as a drive on Vista like you would be able to do with the SD Card?
Im not talking with adb shell... More like using Windows Explorer
Nope. Only the "external" SD card can be mounted via USB, sorry.
This might be what your looking for.

[Q] Trouble restoring "/system/app"

I (without heeding the warnings) decided it would be a good idea to delete certain apps (including Hero of Sparta, Lets Golf, etc.) once I got my tablet rooted. Luckily, there are two A500's in my household, so I was able to copy the /system/app directory from the other untouched tablet.
Problem is, I can't seem to copy the directory (or any apps from it) into my tablet. I've used both ASTRO and File Manager HD, but in both, the 'paste' command is greyed out. It's as if I don't have the necessary permissions.
So, what's going on?
did you set the Read-Write permission on that directory?
Post removed
No, thanks for the reminder.
Upon attempting to edit permissions, though, using a terminal emulator, I get an error after typing this:
Code:
su
cd /system/app
chmod 777 /system/app
And the error I get is:
"Unable to chmod /system/app: Read-only file system"

Silly question, but do you have your system rooted?
Yes, I do. Using GingerBreak as I'm still waiting on that 3.1 update

OK, then try a file explorer like Root Explorer and you should be able to set the rights ro R/W and copy your files over.
Root Explorer worked like a charm. I'm suprised File Manager HD doesn't perform those functions. I got a good feeling when I saw that Root Explorer was requesting superuser permission.

Glad to hear that worked. Root Explorer is what I use. Have been for over a year. I think File MAnager HD can also do it, but it is not as straight forward ad Root Explorer. Have fun.
BTW the permission setting 0777 means anyone can access it (or any other application), for the sake of having a better security the permissions should be changed to 445 so only root can access and execute those files (I'm not sure if APKs are considered excutables if they are not the 444 will be the right setting)

[Q] Kitkat 4.4 Unable to mount system as read-write

Upgraded from factory rooted image of 4.3 to the OTA KRT160 I was able to get this rooted and the bootloader has been unlocked.
Cannot mount /system as r/w from either ROM Pro toolbox or ES Files Explorer. 4.3 has no such issues. Anyone else having these problems or know a way to mount this. I want to update my hosts file and a few other things.
Edit: This method works, just not any apps
adb shell
$su
#mount -ro remount,rw /system
make changes in shell
#mount -ro remount,ro /system

Tried that on a rooted Moto X...still no joy. Among other things, it's keeping AdAway from installing.
Edit: I eventually found MotoWpNoMo, which fixed my problem. It permanently removes write protection from /system. Maybe there's something similar for your device.
I had an issue with read write in es. You have to not only slide the root explorer option to on but also tap on root explorer text to change system to r/w. Hope this helps
