So I cracked the top corner of my screen and now the top half doesn't respond to touch. I was wondering if it would be possible to fix this without purchasing a new screen. I'm not too sure how digitizers work, but I was guessing since the bottom half works fine, maybe a connection came loose and I can fix it without purchasing any parts. Does anyone have experience with this?

I`am afraid you have to have the screen replaced. Can`t fix this any other way. The digitizer is part of the screen and will be replaced as well. Had that once with a S3. It will cost you about 200-250 euro`s.
Your only option is to get a screen replacement or send it LG to do it for you. I had to replace my screen a couple of months ago. I did it myself. Really easy to do, its just expensive. I paid close to $200 for my screen replacement.

Was about to start a new thread when I found this one. Here is what my first post would have been (seems to be software rather than hardware issue):
When I try to pull down my notification bar, I can't. My phone recognizes my touch, but only as it would be just below the notification bar. When I add a second finger, it works perfectly. The same goes for the bottom of my screen. These "half-dead" zones move with the hardware when I turn the screen, not the UI. A restart made it work for about 5 seconds.
Any ideas? Could be a service/app that starts and blocks something, but haven't installed anything in a while now. Also have been going on this ROM for about 1 week now without any problems.
About my phone:
Nexus 4
4.2.2
ParanoidAndroid 3.60
Attachements
1. Here I have my finger on the very top of the screen, but it only recognizes my x-coordinates properly
2. Dito, but in the bottom
3. One finger in the middle, then trying to pull downwards with other fingers and it recognizes it all, both using two and three fingers in total.

Has anyone had problems with their touchscreen not responding to their pen or fingertips? I received my Shift a couple of days ago and I have tried everything that I know to get the touchscreen working. Called support, but they had no solutions as well. The funny thing is, that when the computer first boots, after I enter my password, I can control the cursor for a couple of seconds and then it loses all ability to pick up my movements and taps. Also, when I reset snapvue, I can move the scroll bars but cannot double tap any icons to launch. I am sure it is some sort of software issue, but I have limited UMPC experience.

I had the same problem. I had put my screenprotector the wrong way.
So, try to take of the sheet. Maybe that may help!

Isnt that just classic, I didnt know that you could put a screen protector on the wrong way. Well theres a couple days I wont be getting back. Out of curiosity, what is the right way to put the screen protector on? Thanks for the response - all is well, except for my slight embarassment!
Hmm... a screen protector is sticky on one side, and not on the other.
How do you put it on the wrong way?

Well, just put it once more. But under the edges you should put it correctly. Try your fingernails to put it firmly under the edges.

Dear All,
I have similar problem. Usuallí I use on my HD NRG ROM. About 3 weeks ago I updated to the latest NRG WM 6.5 23xxx ROM with Sense 2.5 Maxmanila version, and since this upgrade the touch screen position moving randomized up or down from 2 mm to 30mm!!! After this ROM I tryed updating each newer version, but not changed nothing. I need realign the screen about 10 times / day!!! The phone I never dropped or cracked.
Can help me somebody what happened with my HD?
I had this happen to me yesterday. I was surfing on my phone as per the norm. Put my phone down. Got a txt, picked it up and it wouldnt allow me to access it. I thought it must be a freeze as it has happened occasionally.
So I restarted.............and nothing. No response AT ALL from the touch screen.
I have noticed the oily spot problem on the most part of my screen, and thescreen doesnt have that little give it used to when using it (paranoia possibly)
So I can only assume something has given within the screen. Ive been searching all day on the internet for causes and fixes but nothing has come up.
The volume and power buttons work but I cant do anything at all with the phone as its obviously all touch based.
Is this a screen replacement job then or is the whole phone goosed?
Roheelshah if you turn your phone off do you have the massive oily screen thing?
Any help is most appreciated....
I had the same thing, a oily spot, but it was there for months, then i noticed another new spot (looked like a tiny tiny burn) and thats when it stopped working completely... ive ordered a new screen which should be comming in a few days, im hoping thats the issue
will let you know if it works ....
keep me updated if you find anything
thanks!

whats it do? and where from??
I just posted something like this a few days ago, pulled my phone out and screen wouldnt respond, had these marks all over my screen, "swirly marks" as i describe it, very well could be the oily marks you are talking about. you can move them around with your finger right?
anyway, i took my sim out, tryna find a spare phone, couple hours later the marks were gone and screen started working again, touch wood its been fine since.
no idea what happened, but try letting it air out or something
ok basically i received a new digitizer today (the actual touchscreen) ...
i dismantled the whole phone using the service manual and some video some guy made (VERY HELPFUL, if anyone wants it for any reason i can post a link), ok so i got rid of all the top bits, the circuit boards (or watever theyre called)
I got down to just the bezel, lcd and digitizer (dont know what a bezel is, the lcd is where the display actually is and digitizer is directly stuck ontop of that)
Apparently when replacing the screen, htc have made it so that you have to replace all three of those parts instead of individual ones, but you can buy them seperately so i thought i'd hero it.
i poked out the screen from the frame (some chewingum like stuff holding it in) then i started peeling off the digitizer (if you get one and want to try it you'll know where to peel) ... this was a mistake tho cause the lcd is unbelievebly sensitive so while peeling off it left scratches on the lcd, and me not knowing the lcd is sticky tried to wipe them and use a dust free cloth, which left alot of crap on the actual lcd!
i managed to get the digitizer off and ripped the cable that goes from digitizer to whatever reads our fingers on the screen, took it all off, placed the new one directly ontop and fed the wire exactly how it was for the first screen.
Put it all together again
Now I did mess up my screen badly, but in a good way! .. i now have full touchscreen working (smoother than ever) but my LCD display is near enough gone, so it looks like the screens really really dark, and i have to tilt it at certain angles to see the screen..
After all of this i now have a touch hd i can controll from my pc (using mymobiler) so i can recieve calls, send texts all from my pc when connected thru active sync, can even play teeter ... but not really the same!
I wouldnt recomend anyone to try what i did, although i think its worth the risk as I would have to replace the lcd anyways if i wanted a new screen in the first place... and who knows you might be able to peel the digitizer off clean (NEVER EVER EVER TOUCH LCD WITH ANYTHING!!!).
It all cost me around 10-15£ for the digitizer and screwdrivers and alot of hours dismantling phone compared to 50-100£ for a new lcd.
I am either going to get a new lcd now so i can actually see the screen, or get a new phone.
Sorry for the essay but hopefully this helps someone in any similar situation
if i do get a new lcd will post how it goes and if it sorts out everything
if anyone knows of any other reasons why my lcd would be so dim (brightness is 100%) accept for me getting carried away with it ... help would be appreciated

Yeah swirly oil marks is how myne started ... i think i finished off the screen by trying to press hard on the mark to try and clear it .. . so be careful with it.. but think that overall the screen had seen better days (course only a few weeks after warrenty finishes) ... all conections inside were ok aswell

Same here. Touch screen not working. Phone never flashed, droped,...
Any solution?
unfortunately, a friend of mine changed the touchscreen without success. Phone was in perfect state, no drop, no flash. Just the touch not responding. I'm not sure that changing whole part lcd+digitizer solve the problem.
Hi all!
I've got similar problem with my touch HD. It's stock since I bought it. My touch sense was acting weird, like it wasn't properly calibrated. Like, when I press 7 on phone pad, the phone actually presses 1, and if I press 0, phone presses 5 and so on..
I've tried to align the screen, but it doesn't get aligned the first time. I have to repeat the process about 4 times before it gets aligned. That's good for about few minutes and the problem is back. Hard reset was also done, 2 times.
Could this be a fixed with a software update? Does this mean that digitizer will soon be dead?
Thank you for your help

Just did the hard reset. When it asked me to align the screen, I just couldn't align the top left corner. I had to press it like 50 times before cross went to the lower corner. Otherwise, after the align it's good for about couple of seconds and then it's just pressing all over.
I thought I had just some software issues because the screen wasn't dead, it responded to my touch. So, I'll probably have to buy a new screen and digitizer, right? Or do you have any other ideas?
Thank you again for your help!
Regards
firstly screencal installs calibration settings not for blackstone so do not install it, no point. (btw it also increases device touch sensitivity)
secondly you guys should try and install the calibration settings for blackstone, basicly what the align screen does, not sure where to find them for download but i could post the registrys if someone wants to make a .cab from them. (atm i cba making the .cab but i am able to do it )
if the calibration settings do not work i think it is best to buy a new lcd package (or buy new device and give me old one for spares oj)
Rn
hi buddy ! What you mean GSensorCalibrator ??
i didnt mention anything about gsensor calibration dude.
tried and tested screencal the other week and it screwed my blackstone.
install these instead:
*screen calibration, sets the blackstone touch points: (aligning the screen)
if you install a cab with these registrys it should fix the alignment problem.
(if it doesnt then its hardware issue = lcd etc)
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\TOUCH]
"MaxCalError"=dword:8
"CalibrationData"="511,542 183,881 183,198 834,197 833,880"
*this one will maximise the touch sensitivity for those that want it:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\TouchPanel]
"PressureThreshold"=dword:0

Does anyone have a recommendation where you can buy a digitizer and lcd from?
Is there anyway to resize the screen to the working zone only?? My phone's bottom ~1cm has been touch unresponsive for about a month. Been using it with pie upto now, but the dead zone is increasing in size making typing and such very very difficult! I have searched the net for resizing the screen but haven't found anything i've been able to use..

This is most likely a hardware problem on the phone. I had the same problem with mine, only with me, it was the whole left side of the screen from top to bottom. I suggest you contact Google Play if your device is still under warranty. If they want you to send the device back, they have to inspect it and that means you can't have it unlocked or running a custom ROM. If they find the cause, and it isn't your fault, they will give you a new phone in the mail. I did this and the the people I spoke with on the phone were really nice. I got my new phone in about a week.

Yeah it is a hardware problem no doubt. Unfortunately my warranty period is over (the phone is 1.5 years old) and getting it's screen replaced would be quite a hassle as i don't live near the US or anyother place that google operates in. That's why i was looking for an app or mod of some sort to resize the screen to the working region only..
You may want to search some infos about the "wm size" adb command.
That should do the trick for you
ok so i've been able to resize my screen with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nomone.resolution_changer&hl=en . lowering the resolution puts two black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Would have been great if the bars was only at the bottom
Ok, so first thing's first. I've been researching this for a few days now before creating this post. The touchscreen issues I'm finding online, are similar to what I'm experiencing, but the solutions have already been done, or my phone is not responding to them. I'm making this thread to see if anyone else has experienced the same issues or has any new news before I a) return my phone to stock, b) replace the digitizer, or c) buy a new one or upgrade to the G3.
My G2 was rooted, but kept on stock ROM with only small tweaks here and there. After the latest update, I noticed my work G2 had much better reception, so I returned my phone to stock to download the update. After updating, I re-rooted the phone, this time, the only thing I changed was the keyboard which I replaced with the G3 keyboard. Everything was fine for months until about a month ago.
It started with not being able to pull down the notification shade on the right half. No biggie, but after a week or so, it got worse. While using instagram, I noticed that the confirm button was sporadically responsive. Sometimes it worked fine, other times it didn't work at all. It began to progressively get worse on an almost daily basis. I decided to see what was going on and enabled both input options in the developer options menu. I found that the entire right side, about 1/8" was not responding to touch, the area not covered by glass screen protector( i removed it later while trying to troubleshoot). The upper right area showed about a half inch block that wasn't responding (the area where the data ribbon is). I was ok with that as instagram was really the only thing I used being affected.
About a week ago, the mid left screen area started being errratic. It began to get worse and started to affect the front touch screen buttons ( the area where the other data ribbon is). I enabled the input options again and saw that I now had a good portion of my left side of the screen was unresponsive. Even though I didn't drop it, I thought maybe the data ribbons had come loose as those 2 areas are where they are. I opened and disassembled the phone and re-sat the connctions after inspecting them. I double-checked all the other connections and LDIs in case humidity was the culprit. Everything looked good. Didn't fix the problem.
I've had to set my phone to unlock by facial recognition to ensure I don't get locked out, and changed my pin to use numbers not affected. I'm going to replace the digitizer, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue, or knew if it was, indeed, a software issue before I spend $75 (I will be replacing the digitizer and LCD to get it working sooner rather than risk damaging the LCD while replacing the digitizer and having to wait another week). I don't want to send it in to LG because I bought it on ebay and have no proof of purchase for warranty, and I want it working sooner.
One thing I noticed that may help with diagnosing, the screen now looks different when off. Before, in direct sunlight, you could see the dotted matrix from the digitizer, and that was it. Now, I can see the retangular pattern across the entire screen. I checked my work G2 which I just received a few months ago and the rectangular pattern is only visible on the edges of the screen, the center is black with only the dotted matrix visible. Keep in mind, this is in direct sunlight. In shade, the rectangles are visible on both.
I'm hoping it's a software issue, but I'm wondering if the digitizer is starting to separate from the LCD. I don't see any acutal separation though.
Thanks for reading the book, and for any feedback. Also, because it will probably come up, I want to avoid upgrading if I can because the G3 is just a little too big.
I restored the phone to stock with the most up to date software. Still doesn't work. It appears to be a hardware issue. I really thought it was software because the dead spots word for a split second after turning on the phone. Oh well. Guess I'm going to order a new digitizer or LCD combo.
Today i was watching video on YouTube and play store was updating some apps in background. Within 10 seconds YouTube app crashed so i closed the app and suddenly my screen started to twitch (homescreen stuck between page 1 and 2 and constantly moving back and forward). i hit power button once and wake it again then i realized that i was unable to complete my lockscreen pattern because it was loosing the touch between 2 dots. i restarted the phone hoping it would start to work again but the problem was still there. i read on the internet that it could be because of the water contact. so now i disassemble my N4 and put it in bag with lot of silica gel pouches. I'm gonna reassemble it tomorrow hoping i that it will solve the issue. my phone is out of warranty now and I've already replaced my screen 3 times before during warranty period for various reasons.
anyone has any suggestions? please comment
before putting it in the bag i updated my official CM rom to latest nightly but problem was still there.

Sell it for parts. Mine has 1/4" stripe across the top of the screen which doesn't respond, effectively eliminating any hope of using the status bar, notification drawer, or any buttons at the top of the screen in apps, like menu, etc.
Same as you, it just happened one day. One minute it was fine, and the next that portion of the screen stopped responding for good.
The only solution is to use xposed with the app settings module for a force 4 way rotation, system-wide, and rotate that damn phone like crazy, every time you need to click that dead spot....which will literally drive you to buy a new phone, like it did me.

There was no contact with water neither do i dropped it then How the heck this happen?
That's terrible, sorry! I haven't even bothered looking for a replacement screen because I've heard rumors it's a common main board issue. I don't want to spend that kind of money just to find out the screen wasn't the issue.
I've a touch screen issue too... Seems common, but I've got a new one for 12€

Story of my life ):
I got the same problem, one minute before it was working fine, the next minute it started ghost touches. I restarted but was of no help. At the time, only the touch screen height equals nav buttons was not responding, I installed pie, but the dead area kept on expanding and now is about half of bottom screen. I've been rotating my phone and trying to keep up for last 2-3 months.
