I believe everyone rates this phone highly, so why has cnet gave this phone a 4 out of 5 rating??

hahaha, point to be noted, your honor!
i have never seen this many positive reviews for an HTC phone. some are calling it the best designed smart phone ever made.
not every review is going to be positive. and i wouldn't necessarily call 4 out of 5 stars a bad review.
It's still better than the Verge's abomination.
4 out of 5 is terrible tbh, phones are subjective and the main criticism for HTC phones is Sense... which I prefer to any other oem ui and asop by far, loved it since my touch pro
I wouldn't call it harsh. Here's their highlights and low-lights.
The battery and storage comment shouldn't really surprise anyone. So far,the camera's received mixed reviews with some reviewers being more impressed than others. I can see BlinkFeed being a "love it or hate it" proposition which is really in the eye of the beholder and everyone won't like it equally. The comments about scuffing are concerning. They loved the display and design which I think will be pretty much a universal theme.

Blinkfeed is cool, when you like to read a lot of news and social things like Facebook, which i do often when i have job school
Camera is good, ok Lumia 920 beats it, but who cares. Its good, not negativ.
No need of expandable storage if you have 32 GB, in my opinion.

I kind of agree with all the points.
BlinkFeed is merely a user-preference, but ability to remove it should be an option.
Then read their xperia review and go mad.

......also "Camera doesnt Impress", sounds more neutral than "Bad" to me, it's not a bad thing, it holds its own in most aspects of picture and video taking especially considering its stsbilisation function.
Actually I dont think any of those "Bad" points are really valid to potential buyers or the more tech savvy.
I think he is speculating about the black and scratches. I'm pretty sure his house keys are not made of gold (it's too soft and expensive compared to brass). Also, the black isn't painted on, it's anodised. I rate the review less than 4/5.
The camera might be a little gimmick but.. i wouldn't say 4 out of 5 is bad..Plus thats only one review.. im sure you not going to let one review be the deal decision maker for you.. i can only see myself taking a star away for the way HTC handling the release.. but that has nothing to do with the phone.. that's just bad PR

If the camera isn't, the term "Ultrapixel" is.
It's not new at all. In fact, the N82 and N95 from over 5+ years ago had both larger sensors (~1/2.5) and larger individual pixel bins than the new flagship from HTC.

It IS the best designed smartphone ever made. The previous title goes to the HTC One X in my opinion.
From what I've read, there's something symptomatic in CNET review: they put as a negative point the fact that the phone doesn't have SD card or removable battery, yet that point is never raised when they describe iPhone.

Just.. unbelievable.
Engadget has close to ZERO fact checking.. and it almost seems like they're actually out to smear the N1 altogether! Check out this rediculous post from the 'engineers' at Motorola, claiming that drawing crossing lines on a device is a good test of a touchscreen's quality. Look how wavy the N1 is! its funny that they post pictures but no video, ok we have the video of the first 3, but what about the video of the N1 getting doodled on... are they all using the same app? (that goes for the android phone)
why are we sposed to take their word for it that one pic was taking with slow, full finger motions while the other was tip and medium speed?
i used to go to engadget for all my tech reviews before i buy things but after pickin up this godsend of a phone, i have noticed how little validity or credibility their site has... still shots do not prove actions of precision...
this is an advanced world we live in now, engadget can make a video to bash androids browser speeds yet it cant make a video to prove this simple line test? plz...

LLLLLLLLLOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLL
I just read the flash article on engadget and really? the guy specifically said that 80% of the video online uses flash, HOW ON GODS GREEN EARTH COULD FLASH OVERALL BE NEGATIVE?! This baffles the hell out of me, granted there will prolly be more ads on our browsers but i really dont care because having flash for other things is HUGE!
pros- 80% of online video will now be viewable
-sites that use flash entirely will now be viewable
-flash games can now be played
-flash can be integrated 1000 other ways with practical uses
cons- ads on websites
-may be a resource hog down? (doubt it though)
i say the pros definitely outweigh the cons...

A lot of us have known Engadget are a bunch of iphone licking fcuk heads for quite some time.
Once they get their vibrating iphones out of their respective a$$es, they might see straight again....
Its really disappointing. They also dished the HD2 which I currently use (altho I have a Nexus 1 on the way) and its truely an awesome winmo phone - and much better than an iphone!

Don't get me wrong, I love the HD2 as well; however, most people would rate the iphone higher strictly due to the OSes. I've never personally had a problem with WinMo, but it hasn't exactly been forward moving.
I'm still laughing at them about the 802.11N "reporting".
...breaking news...Nexus One doesn't support 802.11N...breaking news....
And they didn't try it? Simple test, would have shown they were wrong and it does support 802.11N, but that would not have pumped up the page views.
I personally dont have a problem with people liking their respective phones. If you like the iPhone thats great. If you like the HD2, thats fine. If you like the G1, thats great too. Hell, if you like the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X then thats just peachy.
What really pisses me off is when you try to use incorrect logic, flawed tests, and biased opinions to try and prove to me that the 3g signal in a Motorola DynaTAC 8000X is better than that of the HD2 (lets just say). This is what Engadget and many other reviewers have done, who after all this bull**** with biased opinions and flawed data are no longer considered reviewers in my opinion.
And it also pisses me off that because most people are ignorant, they take these reviewers words as truth and instead of forming there own decision, testing or doing more research already have a bad taste in their mouth. People should be like the recent TechCrunch article and and realize that just because you are not used to it and that it is different from the norm DOES NOT MAKE IT FLAWED, WRONG OR BROKEN!!!! IT JUST MAKES IT DIFFERENT WHETHER THAT BE FOR GOOD OR BAD IS FOR THE USER TO DECIDE!!!
CrApple must be paying them good money for messing things up with N1 launch. I really hate these fan boy srories poping up every day. I've got HD2 Bold2 and expecting N1 on monday. Every device has its own strength and weakness.
I think iToy user think they have best device and it will be forever. They have been deceived by Apple and whore member of on line media. New hardware of iToy can't be jailbreak any more, game over for now.

This is preposterous. First the web browser speed test between iPhone, Droid, and N1 where the iPhone had clearly visited the page before and was just loading from cache and now this? What a complete joke.
Please stop bashing Engadget for nothing...
Engadget post doesn't say anything about the performance from the iPhone or the Nexus One. Engadget just posted an article from MOTO, without making any conclusions. And, if you read the post at MOTO, then you will know that the Nexus One preformed very good (the same as your picture shows) if you press 'medium' on your touchscreen.
So, please, stop bashing Engadget and read the posts good en entirely!

You can't say that engadget hasn't exhibited a clear bias. Their browser test was clearly rigged. That generated a lot of bad press. Almost every aspect of their review focuses on the tiny contrivances they found instead of anything positive. Literally, the phone is twice as fast (almost) as any of the other smart phones out there, yet they could hardly find even a single good thing to say about it.
Everything was written from a "the iphone has been doing it better for years now" perspective.
I tried this myself as well, and my lines came out pin straight even moving very slowly. Engadget is really a bunch of apple fanboys, even from their initial review of the Nexus.
Ive had my girlfriends Iphone 3Gs and my Nexus side by side, and in all aspects I'd rather use the nexus.

The browser test was indeed very poor and totally useless because they only use one website, Engadget.com, instead of multiple websites like it use to be. And yes, I have seen better reviews then this review... But, to say that all the articles on Engadget are 'crap' because they are iPhone fanboys is a little overdone.

Its liek asking a redskins fan to break down Dallas Cowboy performances.
These guys clearly have an agenda which means the product is irrelevant. Once that happens things become tainted and "crap" is the label most appropriate.

Why on earth did the Incredible S get 8 points and the Arc 7? Same chips, Arc has a bigger and better screen, better camera, looks great and sleek, comes with 2.3 already (!), only has less RAM. And did they even mention sound/call quality?

But I do agree with them that the videocam is terrible ! I hope they can fix that.
Personally I'd give it 8 out of 10 but that comes from a guy who just ordered one today and cant wait to get it on friday. Guess I "want" it to be 8/10.
Ah what the hell, its gonna be awesome
I love how they wouldnt stop talking about how thin the iphone 4 was but it was barely mentioned in the Arc review and when it was, it was shown in a negative light. The iphone 4 should have gotten a 7 just for the fact that the screen is so bloody small.
Horrible Engadget horrible.
Theres another review over at What Mobile, quite thorough and seems generally positive. They gave the phone a 5 out of 5
Sadly i cant paste links yet, but google sony ericsson arc review and you should see it, or go to What Mobile's site
The only downside to the Arc's buttonry is one we spotted with the Xperia Play as well -- there's no illumination for the key labels in the dark. You get a pair of lights marking the division between each key, but their purpose is basically indecipherable when the phone's used in the dark

The point is that SE saves money where they should not
Giving little RAM make no sense
It makes the machine slow when running new games or multi-tasking and this is not what the end user want
It is difficult enough to compete with dual-cores so at least give us 512mb or 768mb - this is also probably the reason why the camera video is jerky
Camera also not as good as advertised since small sensor
Nice. I have a feeling that a Factory unlocked Xperia ARC will be my next device . IF the unlock bootlader thing comes out first!

1) arc has 512 ram. all new xperias have 512 ram
2) the camera is awsome, for a phone. there are comparison vids between iphone4 and arc.. you see the difference lol
3) camera is not jerky cuz of low ram. lol. or am i wrong here? but still if it can be, they must have had a ton of apps in the background, since 300+ mb of user available ram is MORE than enough for a friggin camera lol.
Even while multitask-gaming (multiple games open at once) and listening to music and just using my Arc for general stuff, I haven't dropped below 80MB free RAM. And I do not use task killers or kill processes. RAM is really not a problem ATM.
The camera is really, really good for a phone. Only the Nokia N8 has a better camera. Especially in low light, the photos might not be really really good, but they're still by far the best of all mobile phone cameras. In such a small and slim device it's impossible to fit a larger sensor, so it's impossible to get a much better camera anyway.
Camera video jerky? There's a small bug that makes video hang for half a second when switching between very dark and very light images, but that is the only thing I've noticed, and it happens very rarely.

The lorem ipsum dolor text is an old Microsoft joke used to display how fonts appear in Word to give the user an idea which font to choose. The text means nothing, it's a bunch of words sounding Latin and therefore important and smart.

Still, nothing more than a dedicated blogger could do - Where are the measurements?
Wifi: maximum range and throughput over range
Cell radio: quality of GSM / UMTS reception in known good and known bad spots
GPS: TtFF cold and hot, accuracy over time, both stationary and moving; comparison to a reference standalone GPS, ...
Audio: freq response, noise floor, harmonic and non-harmonic distortion, stereo crosstalk etc.
Screen: brightness (min and max), contrast, color accuracy
Camera: see any decent digicam review (but they did have full-res shots, yay!)
I'm not saying build a testing lab, but once upon a time the difference between an amateur review and a professional one used to be the testing equipment and methodology employed.

Thinner, I don't know, it's gotten a bit ridiculous by now. The phones are getting hard to hold as it is. Same for edge-to-edge - where am I supposed to hold the thing? Even with current gen phones I manage to obscure the screen or even trigger something with my hand.
So I think we're golden!

lol. i chuckled when you said iphone killer. this thing obliterates the ip4. now ip5 is going to be a tough battle, but i think the "smarter" users will agree the sgs II will be better. From where i stand though, the only thing iphone keeps killing android is with extremely user friendly ui, especially how gorgeous apps look on the platform. Has anyone seen the dj app for ipad. i mean you cant get better than that. And secondly, the apps availability, android has maybe 50 good games, while iphone has over 500..same with regular apps.
I hope android starts focusing less on (sorry to say)useless features like live wallpapers and focuses on making the dev kit more polished like apple. Hardware wise, theres no doubt the sgs2 is a monster.

I don't know.. for its time the Desire was a "beast". I have a friend with an iPhone who said he loves the Desire, first phone besides the iPhone he considers. It was a very balanced smartphone, good price/quality etc.
Though 1 year later, it looks lame against the SGS II haha

It could have been an even better device if not hampered by hardware problems like the multitouch bug and lack of internal memory. Nonetheless its no doubt one of the best android phone in 2010.

Agree + the GPU that sucks. Internal memory is easily fixable though.
Unfortunately, apple can't afford to simply "catch up" with their android competitors. They need to come up with something new to make people feel "special" just because they have an iphone. After all, Apple has always been about making you feel like you were part of a VIP club when buying their products.

Well - 2 would have given a 8/10, you forgot the main negative point :
=> iPhone 5 might be better - 1 in advance

Hi guys and gals,
got my Xperia Z today and am really disappointed with the display viewing angles. Just wanted to share a few shots with you for comparison.
(Don't hate me for the iDevice, it's a business phone, didn't have a choice  )
The bad thing is: you really notice the color distortion at normal use. While looking up front, everything's fine. But tilt in any direction and you immediately see the problem. Didn't expect the 4x display to be so much better, minus the resolution. Maybe I just have caught a "bad" Xperia, but... meh. Guess I will return it and wait for the X-Phone or so.
I read on a german site that users are reporting a great variety in display quality, this is really a bummer on a flagship smartphone.
regards,
pint

That's not even close to bad. The two others uses IPS displays and the Z does not.

Whats the issue, 99% of the time you will look head one, which your photo proves Sony is as good as the other phones.

to be fair, not every one has the same expectations and preferences so if you really want good viewing angles this is not the phone for you or if you feel you miss out when other phones have better viewing angles, this is not the phone for you. in the end of the day Sony could have prevented this by using a better panel.

The screen quality looks amazing! Viewing angels are alot better than expected too.
The Sony Xperia Z looks much sleeker and has a better design compared to the other 2. The Iphone looks tiny.
Wow... Are ppl this mindless? It was proven that the screens are all the same. How can some look bad and some great? Simple. They can't.
What is happening is that some ppl are just shouting about how great the scrrn is, while ignoring a huge flaw.
I don't understand why ppl don't recognize this and speak up? Tell Sony you arent happy so they can change it in the next version.
Why are ppl settling for less?
In before people accuse me of being a troll...

Because... The better phones Sony Makes, the better for eveeyone. Simple capitalism. I have a vested interest in pointing out flaws in the device, just as I am critical of several things on otther device
Such as DDR2 Ram on the HTC one instead of DDR3. Not to mention low GL bench scores and the the camera not necessarily living up to the hype.

So, when the S4 is announced with exynos 5, i take it you'll focus 100% to the HTC One forms and repeatedly post about it being outdated and obsolete - right? You know, like exactly you did with the Xperia Z.
Please can you take a photo with a better camera? Thanks

Nobody looks on their smartphone in the exact same angle 99% of the time. Do you hold your smartphone straight before your eyes when you look at it? Because that's the only angle the colors are shown correct. The slightest tilt will result in distortion and this ist f*ing annoying.
I have my phone lying on the table while reading news or watching videos, imagine that. Looks ****ty.

The camera's great, I just had not-ideal settings. But given I wanted to show the color distortion, I guess the problem is pretty obvious. What do you want to see?

Not true, sorry.
Here are my shots of Z in the store:

The fourth photo shows the phone at an angle (even this is unnatural though) and everything looks great.
Mind it's a shop where strong lights reflect on the Z's surface.

Compare the icon colours of picture 2+3 to the colors on picture 1. Obvious.
Since there are no colours on picture 4, take a look at the software button bar and compare the lightness to that on on picture 1. Pretty much different, I don't think it looks too great.
edit: also compare the software button bar on pic 2+3 to pic 1, it's almost as "nice" as the display on my Archos A70.
Wow XZ screen looks really wonderful at first pic, which the same viewing angle I use 99% of the time

Post your disappointments about the N6. My disappointments are as follows:
display
quality build and design
camera
no phablet features
My biggest disappointment is that I don't have it yet, even though I preordered it from Google Play, and had the earliest ship-by date they offered (11/21).
Otherwise, I can't really say (see above), but from what I'm hearing, the Ambient Display bug (accidental app activation, butt dialing, etc.) is my biggest concern. Also, the way that Google forces 3rd party apps to shutdown and lock the screen, Smart Lock is effectively disabled when using such an app (like Gravity Screen). That's a lollipop thing though, not really N6, so I'm not sure that counts.
None.

No offense, but it almost sounds like you didn't know what you were getting yourself into or that your expectations were based on a comparative product. . . or that you work for a manufacturer for a comparative product.
I guess he was reading the wrong thread. Android 5.0 and the nexus 6 never claimed to be the note 4 and have a bunch of "features" sorry dudes.

Display. Over saturated and yellowish tint are not my cup of tea. Resolution and brightness are fine but I don't think I'll be able to get used to the super saturated colors and the white color balance.
Non oleophobic front glass? My nexus 5 and iPhone 6+ have screens that are much more greasyphobic than this. This guy requires constant wiping on front and back.
Battery life. Having to carry this monster around I'd rather had impressive battery life. This guy's battery life is average.
Those are my main gripes about the device. There is lots to like.
Thread lightly, I mean tread lightly with this post its soon to get closed.
So far its only that the buttons are at the middle. I prefer them at the top right
The fact that I don't have it yet.

I'll give you display and camera (even though good counter arguments can be made for either), but..
What is wrong with the build quality and design? This is one of the best designed phones lol. Do you have the device? Have you encountered any problems in build quality? Any evidence to back it up?
Phablet features like what? Multi-window? We're getting that soon. What else?
It would be nice if you could explain yourself.

My biggest gripe isn't 100%, but I'm hoping that encryption doesn't cause the device to lag when opening apps. Oh, and lack of availability. Other than that, I'm pleased with this device.

Best designed phone according to whom? To you? Where did you read we are we getting the phablet features? Got sources?
I haven't played with one yet and I don't intend on buying until I do so maybe my opinion will change once I actually play with one -- but my biggest disappointment with the Nexus 6 is its price tag, followed by its size. This phone simply does not offer enough to justify its flagship price tag. It lacks expandable storage and removable battery which should be deducted from the price as other similarly priced flagship phones have one or both of them. Before you say, "That's been a staple with the Nexus line the entire time..." yeah, so were their undercutting prices which justified the phones not having expandable storage or removable battery. $350 for a Nexus 5 was perfectly acceptable because it lacked expandable storage and removable battery. Secondly, the Nexus line has repeatedly been plagued with shoddy cameras and battery life that are simply not on par with flagship phones, let alone any phone within their price range. I'm sure this phone takes better photos than the Nexus 5, but it does not take better photos than the Note 4 or the Xperia Z3, and definitely not the iPhone 6 (that's a tough one to beat no matter what). If this phone was priced at $450-$500, then I can justify jumping to one.
The Xperia Z3 is about the perfect size for me, but I can tolerate going as big as the Note 4. The Nexus 6 is just a mammoth of a phone, and I'm sure watching videos on it is great. But I dont buy a phone to watch videos and play games -- I have a tablet for those purposes. Additionally, with something like a phone, I'd like for it to comfortably fit in my back pockets without it sticking out and without requiring a pair of JNCOs to hold it. I carry my phone with me everywhere (as do most people), I do not want to lug around a freaking phablet everywhere. I think they should've eased into a 5.5" screen size first. Making such a huge jump is a shock to the senses, lol.
I know the phone is a great piece of hardware, but it's certainly not for me as expensive and big as it is. I'll most likely be skipping it.

I ask because you spend a large amount of time slamming the device and praising the Note 4, in multiple threads. Usually when someone owns a device they don't dedicate so much time to dogging on it and creating multiple threads about how much they hate it. They usually sell it and go buy the device they want.
It's classic troll bait activity. That's why I ask.

I have nothing against the OP not liking the Nexus. I'm still waiting on mine and may not like it myself when I get it. My question is why come to a forum and create a complaint thread? I've hated many devices. I sell them and move on. It baffles me why anyone would want to hang around a forum for a device they're so unhappy with.
