Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 OR Wait for Tegra Three devices?
I would also allow for you to suggest other devices but please only android and please only 10 inch tablets.
Also the new tegra three devices might not be as thin or good-looking as the samsung which i really care about.
The only reason i like tegra is because of the support it has in the android app developing community so please try to keep the suggestions to tegra devices unless you have a good reason to contradict it.
This is simple for me.
If you can wait, wait.
If not go for it.
I couldn't wait
If you can wait, it means you will NEVER buy a device lol. When Tegra 3 devices come out, Tegra 4 will be announced. I passed on the galaxy tab to wait for a tegra 2 device and now I hear nvidias "Kal-El" quad core. **** it! I'm going for the Gtab!
lol might as well buy the Samsung now and then sell it once the new one you like comes out. But its true, do you really want to keep waiting? Not I, I'm jumping on June 8th.
Personally I would get one now. You can play the waiting game and never get one as there is always a better one around the corner. You can of course wait but I suspect that you won’t see many better or 4 core tablets announced until CES 2012 next year.

No, if you can wait, it means.... you can wait! I don't know about the rest of you, but I've lived my life just fine without a table. It will be a cool toy to have, but I don't NEED one. Tech gadgets are always progressing, but the tablet market is currently moving at a very fast pace. Tegra 3 is supposed to be out later this year, and is supposed to be 5x the performance. That's a much more significant performance/time ratio than other more "mature" tech products. If you can wait, then there's certainly something to be said for jumping on when the curve flattens out a little. What I do will depend a lot on pricing.
i think it's worth waiting... tegra3 pre production chips allready shipped to manyfacturers, mass production starts around august. motorola and probably asus will be releasing products short after ( promising releases before back-to-school time )
this means that you can, in theory, own a quad core beast in within 3 to 4 months months...
and they are realy fast, throw your pc and your mediaplayers out of the window and start using your tablet instead
perhaps you can invest in a program like best buy's buy back program, so when something new comes out, you can trade in your old and get the new for cheap

If you pay attention to the market it doesn't look that way. I personally think we wont see anything better then whats out now until next year. Most of these company's still need to make money off the products that are currently on the market.
Take Samsung for example, think of the time and money that has been spent building and promoting their new tablets around the world. I really don't see them coming out with any new tablets at the end of the year even if they had the new teleology. they first need to make a profit.

Asus, Motorola, and Amazon (and probably others) are all rumored to have Tegra 3 tablets by the end of the year. You can't make much money off of the products you currently have on the market if they are obsoleted by new products your competitors are offering.
I'm going to revise my initial answer.
If you're asking the question "Should I wait?". You should wait.
After the iPad released last year, I started trying to imagine, what exactly I would use a tablet for. Once I was a bit settled on what I wanted to do with it, I started looking for something that would match my needs.
When the 10.1v was announced I realised it was a match and I eagerly went after it.
Maybe you should wait until you are certain that the tablet you are buying is a match for your requirements.

lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I run the 10.1v and love it.
Things it is:
-light
-sexy (please no 3.5mm jokes)
-brilliant batery (i charge it each night but it only gets down to 30-50% after full day of use)
-netbook replacment (people will argue this but i haven't found a netbook more fun then this, and you can put debian on it )
-casual gaming (not sure of anything on the market you cannotplay onit except porley designed games that are just tiny boxs)
Things it isn't:
-high def cinema (you can run standard def fine and it looks great but if you are obsesd with 720P wait)
-ipad (yer thats a pritty good reason )
-high end device (tegra 2 is fun and all but nexus s still out performes all tegra 2 devices so if you want the bigest and best wait for qualcomm)
In conclusion if you want a great device that doesn't need to be compared to a PC (which i hate that thats were we uave goten in tablets) then go pick one up, but if your after a device that you want to luanch thermal nucular war with wait for qualcomm.

Ahh. You're more into the 30 pin connector then?
I'll stop short of making a crack about the shape of said connector
I was really looking forward to GT10.1 but no luck.
It has Tegra 2 inside which is no good for me and has no sd slot which is also no good for me.
I do want a tablet like this but I do have a purpose in getting one - it has to replace my netbook.
Meaning I want to watch 720p mkv without re encoding, netflix, etc...
So far non of the tablets (including iPad2) can do what I want.
If I would be to take one now just to have it Asus Transformer seems like a better choice.
There is an sd slot on it, there is a great dock with batt. for it and looks like it will be/is cheaper.

As far as i know, the Xoom plays 720p mkv with Moboplayer just fine. I haven't tested this myself but i have read about it in Xoom forum.
If you want, i can test this for you, just point me to a video to test.
And 3G GT10.1 has a sdcard slot.

Unfortunately no.
Okay, I've been waiting for the day... June 17th. Very sold on the hardware and looks, just not totally sold on Honeycomb and Sammy.
Q1: Is Sammy dedicated to upgrading the tablet in Q4 2011 to Ice Cream?
Q2: Are there really only 50+ tablet specific apps (major request)?
Q3: Honeycomb experience and consistency?
I've read two reviews so far that say the controls for honeycomb are all over the place, app drawer upper right, back and home buttons lower left, notifications lower right, app icons anywhere.... come on where's the consistency?
Sammy's UX. I'm one of the few that like Touchwiz, but I have grown tired of waiting for the updates on my Vibrant, if Touchwiz is going to slow my experience down with updates, no thank you to both. Knowing Sammy, they'll require you to download it.
Honest Answers Please
1. No one knows. However, Samsung is one of the companies who is promising to provide upgrades for 18 months on all their new devices. This was announced at Google I/O on day 1. It's not entirely clear what this means though..
2. 50+ means anything above 50 so.. yes, there are "only" 50+ apps, and there always will be.
You can find a good, up to date, list of tablet optimized apps here
there are 162 apps + 55 games on that list. Sure, it's not that many but I can do essentially everything I'd like to on my tablet. The official facebook and twitter apps basically suck, but I use tweetcomb and friend me. They work just fine. The only other app that I would really like is skype. the skype app works but it's not optimized for tablets and, of course, can't do video. this will never happen though, because skype is now owned by microsoft.
it all depends on what you want to do with your tablet, but I certainly do not find that there's anything lacking. I think the main complaint that most people have is the games. I honestly cannot figure out why anyone would want to game on their tablet though.. I play games on my phone when I'm out and I play games on my xbox or pc when I'm at home. I have no use for games on a tablet. However, I have bought a few games on my tablet just to try them out(and because I want to support android devs) and some of them are very good. All the ones in the tegra zone are pretty solid and there are a few other that are quite good.
3. This is all personal preference, isn't it? I like it the way it is but maybe that's just me. Some people like a boring-ass grid of static icons.. that, I will never understand.
Edit: I would also like to see tablet optimized xda and wikipedia apps. However, the browser works just fine for both of these.

I'm praying BIG TIME that my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 experience is NOTHING like my Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant experience.
If it is, then I expect the Android Ice Cream Sandwich update sometime the Summer of 2012.
But some people insist Samsung has gotten better. So I hope so.

Okay, do I really need 90,000 apps on ipad2, will i even come close to using a quarter of them? On the other hand is 165 or so enough tablet specific apps? I'm reading through the list and there's some good apps and variety, but when will there be tons and will it be worth the wait?
Please lets not veer off topic and start calling me an ifanboy, it's my friend that is the ifanboy... Anyway besides being locked into the ipad/apple experience, the option of 90,000 choices of apps is very very appealing.
What else am I missing software wise... do people like using honeycomb 3.1 on a day to day basis?
Please don't talk about the resizable widgets... that is trivial.

using my 10.1v for over a month, i'm really surprised how great most of the android-phone apps work on my tablet! if those applications are programmed in a proper way, you won't recognize any great differences between a phone and a tablet - android app! i use most of my phones' apps on the tablet and i really love it.
so it's not that you have just about 200 apps for your tablet! go on and try it! the apps just won't be stretched or zoomed in like on the ipad (had one before).
the only excpetion is when it comes to games.
Also played with the Xoom, the Flyer, the TouchPad, and the Tab 10.1.
The Xoom felt well built, but heavy. The Flyer is crippled with Sense and its single core CPU, though it felt well built, its over priced.
So, I was down to playing with the Tab 10.1 and Transformer. Both felt well built and light. The Tab was 100 USD more expensive, and I believe Samsung wants to bring TouchWiz to their HoneyComb devices?
I honestly almost bought the Transformer. Thought, I held back because Netflix isn't officially supported yet. I also didn't see Skype Video either. These things would be essential for me and I wanted to research whether there were unsupported methods for these.
So, what are people using their Transformer/Tablets for? I want Netflix, Hulu, Skype Video. Although, I believe Gtalk Video does work?
Also, just a friendly reminder to everyone. If you play with a demo model at a retail store, don't leave your Facebook account logged in. The Flyer, the Tab 10.1, the Xoom, and the Transformer models all had accounts left logged in. The people are lucky I was the one who went hands on with the tablet next because I logged them out without so much as a status update.
Agreed it is unfortunate that things like netflix, hbogo are not usuable on this tab. I could live with watching HBO GO via browser, but flash seems to be all but broken on many peoples TF's also, so that is out the window for now too,
Thanks for the reply. I was pretty close to buying one, they were offering 18 months zero interest financing. But, without those crucial apps, what am I going to do with it that I can't do on my Hp dm1z.
I really agree its not about having 120000 apps, its about netflix, hulu plus, hbo go and words with friends tablet edition, with out those apps honeycomb will never appeal to the masses

Is that an attempt at sarcasm because it should be! I wouldn't want to watch tv shows on my 10' tablet, that's why i have a 47' plasma
I don't see the use of Netflix on a tablet unless you wanna watch it lying down on your bed and grow fat.
There are many other countries in this world, and people there have no idea what netflix and huhu are
anyway, agreed honeycomb should have provided native support for them...
Same here.
I been waiting for netflix and I do see it on android market now on transformer however it won't let you download it. Hopefully this will be updated soon.
Hulu plus isn't worth paying for.. especially those advertisements.
However, you can just go to hulu.com and watch it for free.

I did the same thing yesterday. Went to a few stores, handled all of them and finally made my decision. Transformer 32gb with the dock. While the Galaxy Tab was in my top 3, it has no sd expansion, hdmi and a horribly weak kb dock. Even my non-technical wife looked at the two and thought it was a simple decision. All charged up and ready to tackle day 1. (Root and GO!)

Got to agree with him. Once you root, and get a decent ROM on it, it's a great tablet. Grab the dock if you can, and it's even better. The Samsung is a nice tablet, but I don't care for the excessively bright and non-real colors on the screen. It makes me think that they just turned the brightness and contrast way up to make it seem like it's so bright and vivid. Also, the lack of any extra storage slot (ie SD/microSD) hinders it quite a bit. Ever tried to transfer a large file (>200megs) over wifi or bluetooth? Much easier to just use a card. I have to do this quite often (from phone to transformer) and for friends. Either way, I love mine.
Buy what you want, it's your money so spend it how you want. I love my transformer. Yes, the Samsung screen is 'oh so great', if you like that. I don't, but the Transformer screen is just as good. And, my favorite part, is I can hold onto the Transformer (golf ball dimples on the back of it are awesome...not some smooth piece of metal that gets tons of fingerprints and is slippery).
Today is my xooms one year birthday. Just wanna say I've had no problems (knock on wood) so far and to anybody thinking about buying a Xoom just saying it's been worth every penny.

Try EOS 4.0.4 (whatever flavor) and you will have all standard funtionality plus much more. The EOS Xoom roms are simply awesome, and have made the Xoom the best tab out there. It's even better now than when it was new.

I would recommend a video app called "Stick it" along with its sister browser app "Overskreen." These two apps float over what ever you have open, are resizable and movable and make real multitasking a reality. You should be able to use the YouTube app but also watch any video in a floating window.
Its been a good year. We've really come a long way. Remember when we didn't even have microsd? I got my Xoom on release day and paid $800 at the vzw store. At the time, there was nothing but hate from the media and the Android community. The Xoom got no respect as the premier Android tablet. All of a sudden, with the ics source drop, everybody wants in the Xoom game now. All of a sudden, its hip to be in the Xoom game. Now just look at the EOS thread hit counts. The Xoom is hotter than some major Android phones. We've been in the Xoom business from day one. And we will continue to be for the foreseeable future. This device still has a lot of potential. Going forward personally I see myself either being a EOS sheep providing they tell us Xoom users their plans to migrate to a new device or upcoming device.. or grab the rumoured Google tablet when if ever it surfaces considering the flexibility of GED devices/vanilla devices...

If/when I upgrade to a new tablet I will only consider migrating to one that is under development by Team EOS. I think at this point, it's the development more than the hardware specs that interests me and gives the device longevity and purpose.
We've talked about the next tablet move. The gtab was on the table for a minute. The issue is there's just nothing out there that compares to the Xoom. Even after a year, the Xoom is still on top. I suspect later in the year something new and powerful will drop. As far as official eos support, its likely we will need to see another GED tablet. Having full source is really where the action is.
SLIGHT EDIT: of course the next move doesn't have to be a GED per se. Just look at what Roach has done on the TF! He's a rock star! But personally I prefer a device I can
Code:
fastboot oem unlock
Im usually cool about broadcasting my next move. So you guys will know what I got going.

Dude, you are spot on man. I run the same game with my phone.
I'm with my Xoom for like 6 or 7 months, there's nothing I can speak it wasn't a good investment! Paid R$1300 (it's almost US$750, here in Brazil things are VERY EXPENSIVE ) for the 3g version, thought I wasn't never going to root it, then Motorola comes giving for a little more than 1 and a half month the 3.2 version of Android, a little before I was developing LordAIOTool, then I thought
Screw Motorola Brazil! The Ice Cream Sandwich is out and they release only now the 3.2, with no previsions to 4.0! I will root my Xoom and install a ROM, that is better, already did it to my X10 mini pro and I'm very happy with it

Then I did it, waited until stable release of MZ601, because MZ605 and MZ601 are rooted my Xoom, installed TeamEOS v1.0.0 ROM, now running Codename Android v1.5.5, today I will go to TeamEOS umts_everest nightly #58 because of the new features. Actually I use much my Xoom, principally for gaming, tell me:
You are on a bed, with your Xoom on your hands, playing Dead Space, then going to Modern Combat 3 Online and playing World of Goo, then you decide to view a video, exit your World of Goo gaming, go to youtube, search for smosh videos, have fun, after you want to view your beloved thread on XDA, no problems, just open XDA HD Premium and it's done. Now I want to hear a music while viewing your best friends photos on your tab, no problems, open PowerAmp and select slideshow on library. Need to talk to my friend across the world, just open Google Talk, want to see my gf, just use skype video call and use your amazing 2.0mp cam!
See, you can do everything with it! The only thing that make me uncomfortable is that I can't play 1080p videos, if it's fixed, my best friend will not more be ***** (my friend name) it will be Xoom hahahaha

Here's a good one for parents. Sitting at Black Angus getting ready to dive into a Surf n Turf plate with a Long Island. The rugrats are getting twitchy. Pull out the Xoom and put on some Yo Gabba Gabba episodes! That's some real win there!
It is really good to hear all this; I think I am very late in the game as I just got my Xoom 32gb last week, but besides it is old enough to be considered "outdated" so far its been a nice device with a great hardware!

I'm even later. I got mine in on Tuesday. I think it's the best thing I've ever done for the battery life on my Inspire
I'm loving every bit of this tablet, more and more every day. It would have been nice to get the 4G version, but I'm not feeling another data plan. I can tether if it ever comes down to it. I mostly use mine at home as sort of replacement for my desktop.. which hasn't really been touched since I got the Xoom
Guys, you are coming to the Xoom at a great time because we have 4.0.3/4.0.4 official...we have the best development...we have everything working (well, maybe not adhoc tethering, but seriously, upgrade your phone!)...we have the capability to really start to use the awesome Xoom hardware to the max.
This tablet doesn't appear to be worth the $400 I paid for it. The tablet itself is just boring and laggy, a ton of incompatible apps and games (due to both the tab and devs)... I mean damn, this tablet is a real disappointment. What reason do I have for justifying this tab s purchase? On top of all that, Samsung really ****ed up in the tablet area.
Seriously; give me some reasons why I. Shouldn't trash this cheap and. Get something better.

Nexus 7. Or at the time of purchase, ASUS Transformer Prime.
The tab its awesome.. Just flash cm9 and wait few days for Samsung to release the official ics to get the working camera... Ics rocks in the gtab 10.1 its a completely different product
And as soon as Samsung releases ics files and Google releases jb source we will have jb in the tab being beyond smooth...

In the entire rant above you never once mentioned anything specific that: 1) you want to do, 2) you can't do. I use mine for streaming video from Plex and PlayOn (Hulu Plus, HBO GO) over Wi-Fi and 3G, download and watch HD movies from Google Play, read books and magazines, catch up on the news through dedicated apps and the browser, control my Google TV's with the remote app, use it navigate all over the world with CoPilot, etc., etc. That doesn't seem boring to me. Of course a newer tablet with a Teg3 processor is going to be faster. But for doing what I described above the G-Tab is more than capable. And when the ICS update is released in a couple of weeks it'll get a lot smoother too. Look at it this way, with all the tablets in the world for Apple to try and get banned they picked the G-Tab. Kind of flattering actually.

Really? I'm a troll because I dislike this piece of **** tablet? I've been an Android user since 2008, since the dawn of the G1, but I'm a troll for disliking a product? Kill yourself. The other Android users are right; Samsung fanboys are some of the most defensive, stuck up people ever. Just because I'm a long time Android user doesn't mean I'm afraid to call out a ****ty product when I use one.

It's not exactly about what it can and can't do, it's how it does it. Biggest problem I'm having with this is lag, the lag is ridiculous, and it's pretty funny because a lag free experience was what nVidia boasted about at the debut of Tegra 2.

Running CM9 right now (I LOVE Aokp on my Sensation, myTouch, Galaxy Nexus but AOKP is a bit odd on the tab, and crashy). Some apps are smooth, some are laggy as ****. egl drivers on this really suck though, it could be a lot better. Gonna wait and see how good (or how bad) ICS runs with Samsung's official drivers. If it's still awful then I'm just gonna get rid of this crap and go for a Nexus 7. ASUS actually does **** right and gets it right. That's why Google made them the official Nexus 7 manufacturer, and that's one of Google's best choices ever.
I wouldn't pay 400 for the GT today. A year ago, it was well worth it. If your problem is with apps, get the the iPad. If it's speed, get the Transformer Infinity or the Nexus 7. Simple.

I have no problem with apps at all, Google Play is amazing annd has a great selection of apps. But this tablet can't run most apps without lag, and it's ridiculous. iOS is an extremely boring and disappointing OS so any of those iCrap devices can go dig a hole and die in it. I want the Transformer Pad Infinity, but with $500+ vs $199 (and tax, shipping), with the only significant different being screen resolution... The Nexus 7 is hard to pass up. Sadly my laptop is ****ting out so I might have to pass up on the Nexus 7 for now and get a new laptop, but God damn.... You really have no idea how much I want that Nexus 7.
I'm still running HC 3.2 cause I want the camera but task650 has done a great job. I don't see any lag but some apps don't work which is a bummer, but I still don't think its a waste.
Lag has always been an issue but I've always just lived with it hoping for ICS to come out and save the day. Still waiting (have the verizon tablet and paying for mobile data so no, CM9 is not in the cards for me). Now having a One X in hand for my phone makes the GT feel even more long in the tooth but until there's another android based LTE tablet out there to jump to with better performance I'll stick it out with what I've got.
Depending on when you bought this, yes. I got this the first day it came out and for what it was, it was awesome. It was one of the first Android tabs and I've watched Android's tablet ecosystem grow. If you've passed this recently, there are way better options. I myself got a nexus 7, but there are lots of praise for the Asus infinity and people with their prime are generally happy with it. Good luck and see if you can get an exchange as the Samsung tab definitely isn't worth 400 anymore

Its definitely not the fastest thing these days but I use it non stop and it runs games, music, movies, etc. just fine for me so I have no complaints. Official ICS would be cool though.

Hey I am an Android user since G1 too and I am looking from the same perspective.
Here is what I am going to do with this crappy Tab:
I am not going to trash it but I will keep it and hate it.
This will help me remember not to get any heavily customized interface (Touchwiz, sense ... etc) device in the future and waiting 1 year for an update then getting dropped in the second update because my device cannot handle it because of the customization.
Moral: Keep it simple and light.
Can not say install CM instead, as it is not an valid alternative. Don't take me wrong but my level of reliability I am looking for is just higher than that.

True, GalaxyTask ROMs are actually the best ROMs here, which I find disappointing because ICS is a lot lighter than Honeycomb ever was. Even so, apps still lag, and every browser I use crashes.

Nexus 7 is calling your name too
Its a shame your experience is so poor with this tab. I love the galaxy tab 10.1, running honeycomb 3.2. I luckily don't experience this lag and never have. I have the US model bought on first release a year ago and I still love it today. Use it for everything these days. Music, movies, streaming all from my WD Live hub, connect to my smart tv via HDMI or wifi direct. My mate bought the galaxy tab 2 10.1 yesterday and running them side by side the tab 2 was even smoother ics is an improvement but with touchwiz looks the same as honeycomb tbh.
Maybe you should take your tab back for a refund and do more research and see if there is something more suited to your needs.
