[Q] How to format a USB drive via N7 - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm wondering if it's at all possible to format a USB stick via the OTG cable on an N7 with CM 10.1.
I found a thread in the Galaxy Note forum, but that was posted in May 2012, with no answers or tips.
So, I turn to you guys. Any ideas?
Thanks!

I should maybe specify as to why I want to do this:
Recently I a colleague of mine lent me his USB drive, and it seriously messed up my system (OSX). And as a precaution, I was thinking of formatting drives before I plug them in my main system. And seeing how android is a pretty "neutral" platform, I could use that to safely format USB drives.

The technique used in this thread (see last post) was to install a command-line binary "parted".

I was going to link to my thread but seems someone beat me. Lol.
If you need more detail or help with any of that feel free to ask.

[HELP!] USB Host not working

Hi everyone
I have a problem with my usb host controller
the tab is not recognizing it anymore
it used to work fine before
I tried the same usb host on another tab & its working with no issues
I installed USB Host Controller from the market & here is the stats showing in the application:
S3C USB host driver NOT found!
Root hub present, USB Host mode is active!
any help would be appreciated
thanx
same problem here, i have no solution found at the moment
Ok so i have followed this guide to flash the stock firmware hoping that it might solve this issue
no luck ... it is still same as before
i have also noticed that the flashing did not wipe the internal memory
so i did a factory reset which also did nothing for both the usb problem & the internal memory (Strange...)
i really cant seem to locate the thing that's causing this issue
Hope someone can help
Thanks
Tried doing a nandroid restore from another tab hoping it might solve this issue
but still not able to recognize the USB
i'm thinking it might have something to do with the partitioning of the tab but there is nothing i can do about it since i couldn't find a pit file for the tab
I hope anyone can help on this matter
Thanx

Unable to copy files to my Nexus 10

I connected my just arrived Nexus 10 to my PC and tried to copy a few files but none of them is getting copied and my system is coming to a crawl as soon as I connect the USB cable for file transfer. Searched the forums but I don't see any previous thread on this. Anybody faced this before and knows a fix? Very frustrated after getting my N10.

Check to make sure you have all of the drivers installed. Reference this thread for details - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2001868

That's rooting which I am not planning to do now. I thought the Nexus 10 is supposed to transfer files just by connecting the USB cable and drag/drop from windows without any tweaks.

Yes, you are correct. That guide will show you how to root however, by installing the right drivers, you ensure your computer and your tablet can communicate correctly. Everything you do beyond that point (root, bootloader unlock, etc) depends on a smooth communication between the computer and device so making sure you have the most updated drivers is always a good thing, up to and including simple transfer of files.
Thanks. I got it to work without rooting. I just had to update it to 4.2.1 and it worked although I donno what other issues 4.2.1 would have brought in.

Hmm, thats odd. Either way, the guide I linked you to is great. Although it will teach you how to do more than just rooting, you do not have to root. Step 1 of that guide ensures you install the right drivers. At that point, you do not need to continue using that guide, you're done, unless you want to root the device and unlock the bootloader.
My Nexus 10 32gb came with 4.2.1 stock on it already, which was purchased maybe about a week after Christmas at Staples, so if you had to update it, I'm not sure why but that would explain why I have never had any issues like that.
As a word of advice, whenever you have an electronic device that plugs into your computer and it's not working as expected/intended, checking the drivers should be one of the first troubleshooting steps you take. It doesn't matter if its a tablet, mouse, or phone, this usually fixes it. Keep this in mind because if you do decide to load a custom ROM at any point, you want to make sure you follow the guide for that ROM closely.
Skipping any steps usually leads to a day of reading guides on how to recover your phone/tablet. Glad to see you found the answer, thanks for posting back what worked for you in case someone else has the same issue.

[Q] Nexus 7, OTG and OEM Wifi conflict?

Nexus 7 + Charge + Wifi= OK
Nexus 7 + OTG Charge + Wifi = Fail
Searched everywhere for this conflict to no avail. My Nexus 7 resides in my BMW X5 (Will link video below) and only recently did I discover a problem that meets these conditions: When I have my Nexus 7 charging via OTG cable, I cannot connect to a wifi network. I can enable wifi, but it will just hang and will not see, update or connect to any connections. The moment I pull the OTG cable, I can connect to a network.
My initial car install did not include OTG cable and eternal storage. I remember it working (and in my install video) wifi and charge happened simultaneously. It was when I followed these steps to root, the above started happening.....
Installed Universal_Naked_Driver_0.72 for Nexus 7
Downloaded timur-usbhost-2013-01-29-jb42-*fi.zip and put in root folder of Nexus 7
Rooted Successfully w/ motochopper n7 (No wipe)
Backed up All aps and system settings (Titanium BackupPro)
Downloaded ROM Manager ClockworkMod Touch and used ROM Install option to point to timur file above.
I have re-visited Timur's website and looking for solution but I am left stumped.
A big thanks to anyone who puts me on the right trail.
And to show I give too, here you go....

[RESOLVED] External devices via usb (on Nexus 7 3G)

Hello,
First, I must say that I read many articles, tutorials and threads before, without any positive results so I decided to ask this question. I don't know why I cannot connect external device to my Nexus 7 3G (tilapia). Actually, my tablet's working on CyanogenMod 10.2 unofficial and is based on its kernel. It's even unable to detect device in recovery mode (I've flashed TWRP 2.6.1). I can add that I'm using otg-usb cable which has been included in my set of purchasing. I don't know is it important but my pendrive doesn't see to be ready to use while it's connected via cable because the micro diode is off wheres after connect to my computer it's always on (twinkle or shine). Of course I've installed StickMount app and others similar free for mounting devices and file explorers from Google Store. Additionally, Icon "Mount USB Storage" in Settings->Storage is constantly off (unable to touch). I'm waiting for your suggestions.
Thank you in advance for any replys.
EDIT.
I resolved it. The issue was responding to my cable. I've used the wrong one because I didn't know that it was from the other tablet than this one. I connected my device via new one and it's working perfectly now. Excuse for bothering you.

I have 4 of these 32gb drives and they work in all my Samsung Galaxy Smart Phones ... 3, 4, 5 and 6. They also work in all my tablets ... Tab 8, 10.1, Tab S ... They auto mount and are USB 3.0 ... AND the BEST part? They have a standard issue USB port on one end and the USB mini port on the other so they can run just about ANYWHERE on any device. They Auto Mount up as "USB Drive 1" in all the portable devices and drive letter mount in computer type situations. Well worth the 12 bucks! I hope this helped! Link for drive:
