Things I need to know about Nexus 10? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Nexus 10 is not available for my country(Taiwan), so I ordered a Nexus 10 from amazon yesterday.
Is there anything I need to know when I get my nexus 10?
Like how to first charge it? Or what else?
Thanks
Tim

Fist thing when you get it... go to settings > about > and update it.
-Check for terrible screen bleed. Get a black wallpaper and set- make sure no icons are in the way and see how much white you have in your corners. If its terrible, return it. If its a little or you can tolerate it, keep it.
-wifi - keep an eye on your wifi. Some people have terrible wifi even after the update.
-get yourself a pogo charger.
- Enjoy it. Dont let the negative overweight the positive. Shes a beauty.

[POLL] How satisfied are you with your Google Nexus 7?

This is a simple poll to see how XDA users are satisfied with their Google Nexus 7. Please select the answer that best describes your experience.
Lets not turn this into a defect / issue complaint thread but use it as a gauge at how users feel about their device.
:highfive:
Although I returned mine due to screen separation, I can recognize that even my slightly defective Nexus 7 was an extraordinarily good value. Unprecedented.
But at the same time I'm crestfallen. I think that if Google can very nearly produce a tablet of the highest quality for $200, they should raise the price to $225. They shouldn't have done what they did -- cutting corners on the assembly and neglecting quality control in order to meet demand.
I don't mean to rant, or complain, but I answered your poll honestly and wanted to clarify. I got what I paid for.
For the price, I cannot believe how good value this product is. So glad they haven't put a rear camera on this, don't understand why other manufacturers do! Not worried about the lack of expandable storage, totally understand the way Google want to go towards the cloud.
Overall as this is my 3rd tablet, I'm going to say 3rd time lucky, my favourite so far
7/10: Wish I didn't have to take the back off to tighten the screws for the screen. Will raise to a 9/10 when I figure out how (and if?) Google Now works in the UK and when they release Play Music, Magazines and other missing content for here. Unfortunately will never be 10/10 due to the fact that I slightly scuffed the back fixing the screen problem
Very happy indeed, so much so I am selling my ipods, ipad and mac book pro.
While I do intend to replace the mac with a pc laptop at some stage, the nexus is more than enough for my needs in the interim.
On the face of it it could be misconstrued as something else this post, but if explanations are required as to my thinking just ask.
9 out of10. Extremely satisfied. The price is right, the product is solid. Enough said.

I give this nexus 7 a 10/10. An excellent device all the way around. Has more than exceeded my expectations. Plus this is my first 7in. Tablet. I love the form factor and size of it. I can type very fast on it using thumb keyboard.
It is amazing !!!
I'd still buy one knowing about all issues outlined in the past week.
I have a bit of backlight bleed, which seemed to reduce after i tightened the screen screws, other than that its good. However im not blown away. Screen is a little dim, its smooth but no more so than my galaxy S3, it doesnt do anything my Galaxy tab 8.9 doesnt, apart from Google now.
I was really nervous ordering a Nexus 7 after reading about people having so many different quality control issues but I am extremely happy and satisfied with this $199 tablet. The quality control on mine was good except for a low volume external speaker. The problem was solved with advice from a forum member to use the Volume+ app. I fiddled with the settings and now it is as loud and clear as I want it. I rate it a 9/10.

I am extremely pleased with mine and it came in defect free (so far).
I absolutely LOVE my Nexus 7! :victory:
I absolutely love it. I bought one for my girlfriend and she spends a lot of time on it, too.
Results looks pretty straightforward so far
Keep this up for all owners to weigh in.

I obviously knew going into it that I was buying a $250 tablet, so obviously there were going to be some cutbacks. It was definitely worth $250, but I really wish they would have offered a more expensive 7" Nexus in addition. I understand that they just wanted to boost the market, so that's why they made it so cheap. But a $200/$250 Nexus 7, and a $300/$350 Nexus 7 Pro or something would have been ideal for me...
For the price this is the best device I have ever owned, period.

Best Alternative to N10?

I really wanted to get the N10, I really did. But Google just had to **** it up with their terrible customer service and a ****ty checkout system that spews out errors every single time. I'm done waiting around, so now looking for an alternative, any suggestions/recommendations?
I'm more of an Android fan obv.
TIA.
UPDATE: I ordered mines after a few e-mails with Google. Got the beast. It's amazing!
Ordering from Google was a piece of cake for me. I ordered it on a Saturday, got it that Thursday (Lexington, KY to Los Angeles). But I've never had to deal with their Support, so I'll take your word on that.
Having said that, I honestly don't think you'll find another tab that compares with the N10, but I love mine so much I'm hardly objective. I believe if you persevere with Google you'll thank yourself down the road.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2
Their support is basically "read the online help sections!!!!".
Anyway, I got this email just now from Google:
"Hello,
During a recent review of your Google Checkout account, we were unable to
verify your information.
As a result, your account has been temporarily suspended and you will be
unable to place orders. In order to resolve this situation, please provide
us with the requested information of MR XXXX
within 3 business days by filling out this form"
Um, I have been buying apps with this account for a long time now. What gives?
You got me, bud. If it's a credit card issue, maybe your card company can help. Sometimes when your billing address isn't *exactly* as it's written on your statement it can cause problems. But if you've been been using the same card all along, that's probably not it. I know because of the expense of the tab, my card company called me to confirm I had placed the order before they would authorize it. Maybe that has something to do with it.
I would tell you to buy from Amazon, but the last I checked, their pricing was higher.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 2
The best alternative right now is IMO is the Kindle HD 8.9, but it is much more difficult to root and all that. If you wait a few more months other companies will have powerful tablets out with new processors and probably high res screens.
You could buy the nexus at retail too? I almost got the Samsung note 10.1 myself. Its screen isn't as nice and I would miss a few other things like the front facing speakers. But the note has the stylus and doesn't have the habit of rebooting unexpectedly either.
Aren't you going to have to straighten out Google's credit card issue in order to buy apps in the future anyway?

The note also has front facing speakers. The shape is very similar to the n10. Major difference is the note has a plastic feel to it and in my opinion doesn't feel as solid as the n10.
Also the note does not suffer from light bleed bit you're right, the screen is not as nice!

I'm in UK, and I don't think any retails sell the N10. I would have bought from Amazon but they are £100 more dearer and eBay prices are just insane - in comparison to Google's price tag.
The main reason why I want the N10 is for the screen. I'm a picky prick when it comes to screen resolution. Is light bleed a huge deal on these devices?
I've sent Google the docs they asked for anyway.

Only alternative that ccould match up with the n10 is going to the the Sony Xperia Tablet Z but you will have to wait another month or two. It may actually be a little faster than the n10 as well.
There has been a lot of complaints regarding light bleed but personally it wasn't an issue. Sure I can see some slight paleness on 2 sides in the dark at max brightness but in regular light using auto-brightness I don't see it on a dark screen. And quite frankly I would never have even noticed if it hadn't been for the notorious thread here. LOL
Best alternative its to wait for a new product... Nexus 10 II ... Maybe these guys from google will solve issues with battery life and with charging time.. Its a shame that you have almost perfect configuration but unable to use because of not enough juice. Not a complete satisfaction and this make you angry and tired to be dissapointed. Good luck

I wasn't planning on taking the tablet outside much, Used for indoors mostly, so when not in use would be charging. How 'bad' is the battery life like?
Get the galaxy note 10.1. It's a beast at multitasking!
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
There are various experience with the battery... I dont know where its the problem. I tired all the variants. Kernels rom.. Brightness etc but i cant get more of 5 hours screen on ( normal use)
I realized the problem imediatly after ive got the tablet.. 3 hours at that time from 100 % to 0 %... After few cycles ive got 5 hours but after more cycles she remained at this average. I can not do a RMA anymore. Mine doesn't have screen bleeding. Maybe you will have luck to find one with battery and screen ok. By the way, the screen its nice but not so amasing . No deep Black make sometimes screen look cheap LCD. And so what its grate for some if they almost all keep it like 30% for keep the battery alive more. Sorry for my english
Anyway the main reason i like it its because it rolls android... And have a good cpu... Besides this horror customer care from google. No original accesorie yet after months from launch... That is not the way i hoped from a monster like google and Samsung.

Samsung note 10.1
I think this tablet is the best alternative right now, because color reproduction is more vibrant then the N10. Black is deep, other main color like red, blue, and green look much more attractive to the eyes beside from the true multitasking. ( That's why I return N10 for the note 10.1). The screen isn't that sharp compare to the N10 but it isn't that bad. (If you use the tab at a right distance, then you won't notice the pixels). Color and the true multi screens, and S-pen are a plus for the Note 10.1. In my opinion, It is the best tab since I already used the Asus transformer prime, Microsoft Surface, Nexus 10. Sorry about my English and I hope this help you.
Even my HTC desire 2.5 years old amoled display it has deeper black than n10. Don t be so overexcited. Let the big companies that already have the next 10 year tehnology deliver to us the goods faster instead of asking 500 dollars on a product that has so many anoing insuficiences.
We need a little small official pogo cable for 4 months guys... Wtf.. And Its not ready yet... This is a nice comedy with us playing in ...
I was having also Asus infinity - laggy as hell like an old 94 computer... I give it back în hope that master google give us something for 2013. Flowless device ... I was so wrong

An amoled will ALWAYS have better blacks then an LCD. Its the nature if the display. Blacks on an Amoled are pixels that are turned off, whereas an LCD panel reproduces blacks while lit. Produced blacks (amoled) > Reproduced blacks (LCD). The trade off is worse battery life, inaccurate (but over saturated, which people love) colors, and mostly god awful whites.
The Nexus 10 is a fabulous tablet. It has its issues, they all do. But for a power user like myself, there isn't even a competition. I cannot use a Touchwiz device, and ASUS burned their bridge with me over the Nexus 7. (EMMC issues, build quality nonexistent). Sony is a true competitor but I cannot stand around for months waiting for a company to issue an update. Developers are great, and porting AOSP and CM are good in general, but they have issues and most of the time the cons outweigh the pros and I have to fall back to a stock based system. To each their own though, there is not a "One tablet fits all", even the iPad isn't perfect. I couldn't get past the Apple wall, and 4:3 aspect ratio

Amoled screens have an infinite contrast ratio, your HTC Desire will have deeper blacks the an any single non amoled device out there, put it next to an iPhone, a Nexus 4, a Droid DNA and the result will be the same.
The black levels could be better here, I won't deny that.
Wait for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3. It's rumored to have a high resolution screen like the Nexus 10. Hopefully one with deeper blacks and punchier colours though.
Hopefully it will be announced on the 14th of March with the SGS4.
Just curious...is the Nook HD+ with Cyanogen worth a look? It's a bit bare-bones compared to the N10 (no BT, no camera) but otherwise, it seemed like a good value @ $269. From what I can tell, you can even buy an N2A card to make the transition to CM painless.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
If you don't need Android... The iPad 4 is a decent enough alternative. Slightly heavier, thicker and lower resolution screen. They are on sometimes on sale too.
In android world... If not the nexus... Maybe the new Asus Memo. It's a 300 tegra 3 tablet... SD and it looks like Asus fixed the memory. If not the nexus, I'd honestly wait because a whole new generation of processors are coming.

I had some questions about the nexus 10 I ordered mine from play store shouls be getting here soon after I readed all these problems im ready thinking its gonna be bad like some people say . How do getting replacements work . Do they send me one first then I send messed up one back . After the 15 day return period could you still get replacements if like the screen leeks bad . ???????
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
If you let Google put the cost of a new Nexus 10 on hold then they will send you a Nexus 10 while you still have yours. The money will be released when they receive your old Nexus 10.
Replacements are done through Google first, and after the return/replacement period then warranty for hardware defects is through Samsung. The Nexus 10 comes with a 1 year warranty, but a couple people have had problems with Samsung trying to say the warranty is only 90 days. The booklet clearly says 1 year though, and I think it says 1 year in the Play store when you buy the tablet so Samsung will have to honor that. If there are too many problems try and get Google involved with Samsung not upholding warranty on Google's tablets.
And it is really just 15% of people making a large stink about problems, many people are perfectly fine and happy with the tablet. Of those 15%, probably 5% will simply never be happy and just want to cause problems.
When you get your tablet be sure to set your background to solid black and delete all icons on the homescreen. Turn the brightness up half way and look for backlight bleed. if you have some, then you should consider returning the tablet for a new one, especially is the bleed has a yellow color to it rather than white. You can turn the backlight up higher to check with more brightness, but if you dont notice it at 50% then you probably wont ever notice any issues with the screen during any use.

but with more care about the possible defect . test the product very good before decide to keep it or not . dont trust google and samsung
- test the bleeding ( i have alot 4 points )
- test the battery . you should get at least 6 hour of screen minimum minimum on surfing the net . ( i get 5 )
- test the hdmi out ( i got it deffective from the box )
At least this are my problems

Yes I love mine. It is extremely smooth with custom ROMs and kernels. We have lots of great options from developers, battery life is exceptional, and the screen looks amazing watching an HD movie or TV show. I suppose if I had ever had problems with the tablet then I may feel differently, but I have yet to have any issues whatsoever. My one regret is that I did not purchase a 32GB version. If I could go back I would have waited another week to buy and paid the extra $100 for double storage space. I have a lot of games installed and my tablet is 90% full on space at all times and I wish I could install more.
I also have the note 10.1 which one you think is better .

When do you notice the light bleeding?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
My tablet does not show any hint of light bleed until it reaches 80% or more brightness on a completely black background. Which is pretty good since LCD screens just inherently have light bleed because of how the backlight is designed for the tech. I have never even gone above 30% brightness while in doors, and outside at 100% it would be impossible to see any backlight bleeding anyway.
Once your tablet arrives I highly suggest the KTManta kernel. It has lots of fun options and the only kernel with a bit of color fix.

I love my N10. But this is my second one, I had to RMA my first one. I was pretty vocal about the problems I was having, because of this:
+Its true that there is a lot of problem threads about this device. Partially this is from Android 4.2.1 not playing well with the N10, partially its because there are some defective N10 devices out there. I know because I had one! When you, the end user, has a general problem and then you go online to try and see if there is a fix, you find these threads, and everyone chimes in together it starts to get intense. Some of the people, as another user said, may never actually be satisfied. But others are reporting real problems, trying to find a fix. Im a lot more OCD than most people I meet, so I just assumed that was what was going on. I assumed I was just being picky, and that others were just being okay with it. But now, after using a different N10, I can say there was a guaranteed problem with my first unit.
So, just like the people that say "bad" need to be taken with a grain of salt, so do the people that say "good". I can say this: there are both good and bad N10s out there, and one thing EVERY new N10 owner needs to do is QUICKLY determine if you have a good or a bad one so that you can remedy the situation ASAP if you have a bad one.
~bm
There's two things I'm not a big fan of on the Nexus 10:
- Thermal throttling (this shouldn't even be an issue under normal circumstances, but the situation is far better than it was around launch)
- Available memory (we only have access to 1.2GB of RAM, not anywhere near the advertised 2GB)

Nope. I rooted it as soon as I got my hands on it. My fave: Rasbeanjelly + Trinity..
Edit: Thermal throttling is a common problem across all Nexus devices. But I don't consider it a big problem because I'm underclocked.

How much do you like your G4? 1-10? (Vote)

BTW, no root and twrp for the G4 H811 is driving me nuts, so this poll will keep me temporarily sane!

9 for me. Love it.
I put 9 I guess based on the descriptions it's between a 9 and 10 for me, there are some small things that need to be improved like the missing taps on the touchscreen, terrible top pull down menu-everytime i scroll across I find myself accidentally turning off or on something I didn't want to, screen brightness at max level is a little underwhelming ...etc but nothing really deal breaking for me. Overall I'm satisfied with battery life.
I would not return this phone for anything else out there at the moment-that pretty much sums it up

Some of those thing could probaby be fixed with an update or custom rom.

10 for me. Coming from a LG G3—>Note 4->Note 4 Edge->Nexus 6 to this phone. Im just waiting for the ordered skinomi glass screen protector and verus verge gold case. I got the gold plastic back version of the phone. Also waiting for Supershieldz glass protector, spigen carbon fiber case, i-blason prime case, and UAG ash case w/glass screen protector.
I'm an Lg loyalist in all my electronics. I loved the G2 and had none of the problems others had on the G3.. Until Tmo effed up lollipop, It was the best for me. I love the G4, but I honestly expected more, especially from the battery. Overall I am still happy with it and like the look, shape and feel better than the 3, but the G3 just ran better for me. I do love having smart lock and the other additions. I hate that they removed smart screen and Tmo again left off the user accounts though. I get better signal than my other phones so that's a plus. Who knows maybe this replacements battery will be better and I'll be happy, I have never been a custom rom kinda guy. I like the Lg stock experience and really just do a few simple mods and tweaks to fine tune it.

I've been around the flagship block that last few years: Note 3, G3, 1+, note 4, Nexus 6 and now G4. I've been rather schizophrenic about it, the missed taps and studdering are my complaints, but I's sure a custom ROM will readily nix these, so I'm staying with the G4 to see what the note 5 will look like.
Rated it at 9....pretty damned spiffy.
given the criteria, I gave it a 10, I've had a tilt 2, LG T501, Amaze 4g, G2, G3 and now the G4 as well as the following work phones droid maxx, some other droid with a keyboard and LG gs4 and HTC one Mini. The LG G4 is better than all that have come before and I do love it.
Compared to the G3, better contrast/colors, camera, volume, battery life, BT audio in my car. If I had one complaint is that I don't care for the metallic boarder, it will eventually chip and look ugly for those that go without a case. while it's no game changer, it's a great evolution of the platform. now if it had the battery life of the G2 then I would give a 10+.
8.5
9.5 so i went with 9. Size is great and reception is phenomenal with lte going fast and bluetooth connection taking little time to connect. Could list positives for days.
Gripes:
#1 Auto brightness - indoors its too light in good artificial light and darkness. Makes viewing angles bad. Hopefully they can update it to be brighter. Outdoors is great.
#2 Concept software unpolished. There should be more smart options (work settings maybe or other setting options). Same goes with dual screen mode.. Limited apps.
#3 G4 bootloader struggle... I plan on having this a while but it sounds like a xda bounty mission.

I give mine an 8. You can fix #1 above by using the free play store app lux lite

2. I'll most likely return it. My touchscreen misses taps (especially during knock code input), has issues charging, and isn't rooted (yet). I have the 810. I came from a note 3 which is a beast of a phone and I can't justify paying for this phone when the note is better in many areas. I'll miss the G4 camera, though.

9 For me as well. I love this phone. The only improvement could be the battery life for on screen time along with the restoration of functions removed by VZW. Aside from that, it's a great phone and personally I'm glad I had chosen it over the S6/S6 Edge.

Decided to keep my Nexus 6!

Hello,
So I'm on my second Nexus 6. I originally had a Midnight Blue 32GB but I sold it after picking up a Cloud White 64GB when Amazon had them for $250. I have had it for about a year now and it still works great.
Well, I sporadically listed it on Craigslist to sell and started to look at new phones. That is when I realized, there is nothing out right now that I really want. Sure, a Google Pixel would be nice but that price tag....
So being I decided to stick with my Nexus 6, I want to make it like new again! I just ordered a New OEM Mid Frame, New OEM Back Panel, and New OEM Battery. It all cost me under $30. My display is flawless, has always had a screen protector but my frame has some dings and my back panel is starting to come up on the corners a little. I figure a new battery and some new housing will make it like new again.
Anyone have any tips on cleaning the speaker grills? I figure they may be easier to clean when I have it apart. I plan to try to clean them out along with the charger port when I have it apart.
Any chance you can list where you got your replacement frame? Thanks.
Links to the 3 products you replaced would be nice, also I used a slightly damp toothbrush to clean the speaker grills.
Good choice!
mine still looks like new being I keep it in a Supcase.
I purchased the mid frame on Amazon for $9.99

The battery and back cover I got off eBay. They are all over on there. The battery is a Motorola EZ30.
I decided to keep mine as well! The phone still rocks. Far as speaker grills I use a fine pick and pop the metal pieces out and use a toothbrush or qtip

Same here, I want to change my Nexus 6 but it seems I can't find anything else I like to replace it.
I was thinking on Nexus 6P but I've heard a lot of issues with it turning off/bootloop/death so Im going away from it.
I've had mine for more than a year now and it doesn't have any single scratch/mark/dent (Always had it on Poetic Case + Intelliarmor screen protector)
I still enjoy and appreciate the benefits of my Nexus 6 compared to other phones out there, also not wanting to spend many hundreds of dollars on a Pixel XL that would be just OK in comparison.
My *only* reason for considering a future model change is the camera, which is incredibly laggy (especially if location tagging is turned on, but even without that set). For now, I continue to put up with the shutter lag, since it's been happening since the first year and I'm used to it.

I order me a Mate 9 is the same Screen size and the rest over all should (is) better as on the N6. Don't get me wrong i love my N6, is the best that i ever had until now, but it's time for a new and better Phone :good:

I have to agree! The camera is the only thing I don't like about my Nexus 6. Lucky for me, I hardly ever use it. About the only time I do is when I am taking a picture of something to post or sell.
I use a modified version of Google's camera called Camera nx1. Also I unencrypted my phone and for me the camera lag was gone.

Can you tell us where to find this app? I've tried looking it up (Googling) but I was unsure which one is it.
Thanks
I was hell-bent on replacing my Nexus 6. It was getting super laggy (I was part of the Android N developer's preview), it had battery issues, etc. But before I jumped ship, I did a complete wipe + factory reset of my phone. I deleted every single byte of information on it. Then I flashed Google's factory images (+TWRP). I also used the Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the unencrypted kernel (or whatever)
Finally, I gave myself a nice new wallpaper.
It's been amazingly better since then. My battery is great, the lag is gone. And I know it sounds silly, but between flashing and the new wallpaper, it feels like a new phone. This will be my first smartphone ever that I've kept for 2+ years. Maybe in a few months I'll start looking (and I'll be looking at the Chinese phones, like Huawei, Xiomi, Honor, etc) because I ain't got no time for no $800 Pixel phone.

Hey man, thanks for the link. It looks (hopefully it's not just a placebo effect) a little bit faster when taking a picture and maybe even processing a little bit faster. I'll try it longer and see how will respond.
Cheers

Your welcome man. I'm not sure what happened to the original thread here on XDA. I couldn't find it either. My wife's and my nephews nexus 6s both use this camera apk. Also when I unencrypted my phone the camera lag is completely gone. Not sure if it has to do with the camera image having to become encrypted as it's processing,. Not sure. Anyways let me know what you think. Also sent you another PM.

Me too
I was so hyped about the Pixel XL ordered thru Big Red and waited two months to get in stock only to find out they screwed up the order and they told me it would near the end of march before they could fill the order. I cancelled and stayed with my Nexus 6. Mine is only a 32gb and I would like bigger storage, the only thing I'm considering is maybe a 6P over the 6 but other than that I'm not upgrading.

Camera, and the sluggish ui. Compared to the n6p, it's slow.

Can you plz advise the steps you took to:
"did a complete wipe + factory reset of my phone. I deleted every single byte of information on it. Then I flashed Google's factory images (+TWRP). I also used the Nexus Root Toolkit to flash the unencrypted kernel (or whatever)"
I too replaced my battery with a new supposed "OEM" one from ebay...and it didn't change a damn thing. I still only get about 2/3 of a day out of it. When the phone was new I'd get a day and a half!
I then recently bought a brand new Mate 8 and am less than impressed with the IPS LCD Screen, vibrate mode and battery life among other things.
Would love to give "Shamu" a new life, she's been an amazing phone over the last year or so. I too have never kept a phone for more than a year.
