[Q] HDD to SSD swap - Windows 8 General

I just bought a new Acer Aspire V5 with windows 8. I want to install a new ssd but the Acer didn't come with a new installation disk. How do i go about doing a fresh install of OEM windows 8 on a new SSD without the installation disk and without purchasing a new disk or license?

Please title your threads appropriately (you've been here long enough you should know better).
One way, if you have access to another computer, ideally running Linux or some other Unix-like system, is to connect both the old drive and the SSD, resize the partitions on the larger drive to fit on the SSD exactly, and then use the dd command to do a low-level copy operation. This is not necessarily the *best* way, but it's straightforward enough.
A somewhat better way is to attach the SSD, then use the recovery partition (that should be present on the original drive) to "restore" the OS onto the SSD. Then, remove the original drive and install the SSD, and it should work. I haven't used the recovery partition though, and don't know how hard this would be.

Can't you just use the original SSD to create a recovery media, and then boot from that?

Not sure. I don't know how windows8 recovery works...
Sent from my LG-LS970 using Tapatalk 2

Normally there is an option to create the recovery media. Another option is to figure out what key windows is using and reinstall and use it.
I believe you are better off installing on SSD over cloning. Windows changes several settings during install based on being installed to SSD.

OP, just download an iso from somewhere, burn it to a DVD, and install using that. The serial key is embedded into the BIOS and windows will pick it up automatically.

Yeah, I got it. I really hate Windows 8 though. I want 7 back
I was told once you install 8 that's it, no "downgrading" due to the filesystem used.

Yeah that's kinda bullsh*t. You can install an OS you want. You might have to go into the bios and fool around with a setting or two to get back on Win7. But there is no limit to what you can install on YOUR computer. The hardware you own, the software is licensed.

You can't downgrade directly like you can upgrade. But you can install 7 just back everything up format and install.
Also bios does not store key for OS..

I don't think my Toshiba 925u stores it. Maybe it varies by manufacturer. Where did you find it, in the bios menus?
Edit. I found a good explanation here. Window 8 does tie the os to the hardware. But you can't view the key in the bios.

I love the Yoga. We have two in the house, one is mine, and one is my sisters. My sister had a screw fall out of the bottom not too long ago, but we found it and put it back in and tightened the rest of them. We both got the one they had at the local Best Buy to avoid being backordered from Lenovo.
There are a few configurations out there:
1) Color: Either silver or orange (they call it tangerine, and it's actually quite nice). I have the silver.
2) Storage space: You get either 128gb, or 256gb mSata SSD's. They come with a weird partition map, but there is a hotfix available from Lenovo to fix it. I have the 128gb one and I have about 100gb for me to use.
3) RAM: 4gb or 8gb, single channel. Its a bit annoying that Lenovo didn't use dual channel memory, it really increases the HD4000 graphics capacity. Just look at the Surface Pro (dual channel) graphics rating compared to the Yoga. It's a few points higher just because it's dual. I had gotten 4gb, but I bought an 8gb stick. Its under the keyboard and after you take the keyboard off just once, you notice that it doesn't lay flush anymore. Nothing some double sided tape won't fix.
4) Processor: Its either an i5 or an i7. I got the i5 over the i7 because I don't need a higher clock speed.
The battery life is excellent and it lasts me an entire day while on campus. The touch screen is phenomenal. The display is sharp, and the colors are just right. It's quick, it doesn't make lots of heat, and I really feel like it's well built.
My only wish? That it had more then two usb ports. It has ONE usb 2.0 port and ONE usb 3.0 port, as well as a single 3.5mm jack for headphones with a mic (for Skype and such) and an HDMI out. The webcam leaves a little to be desired for, but all my friends say they can see my nice and clear while on Skype, it's just the camera app that makes it look grainy.

Mine just came in the mail, free of charge! Fantastic. Can't wait to mess around some more with it. Wish it was on the sprint network instead of verizon...but at least it's cdma, so maybe something can be done. I got mine last week. Its really only good for basic browsing. Doesn't run Hulu well.
I haven't tried to install linux - as this was already accomplished by others.
I'll start messing with it over the holidays.
well, wireless tether may not work, but wired tether does! awesome.
And yeah, only good for web based stuff. But there are quite a few little apps and casual games in the app store for it. Google docs for productivity.
It won't boot from usb (trying to boot a portable linux), but going to look into the installing linux part of it. May not go ubuntu though, may try something a little lighter weight.

Math Teacher seeking Tablet!

Hi Everyone,
I am looking for tablet advice. I am a high school math teacher who teaches using SMARTboards. If you've never heard of this, it's basically a giant white board that is also a touchscreen (picture a 6 foot tablet mounted to the wall). It mirrors the PC in my classroom (via a projector mounted on the ceiling), and allows lots of fun interactive opportunities with my students. However, I am stuck at the front of the room with my back to my kids a lot. I want to change all that, so I want to buy a tablet to control the PC (which in turn controls the SMARTboard).
What I am seeking requires a tablet that could take over a Windows XP PC (wirelessly I assume - we do have WiFi access). Any suggestion on good apps for remote access would be appreciated here, but also I want to know this - would this system seem to be a good one with the Nexus 7?
Do you guys think the screen is large enough for this sort of application (solving math problems with a stylus, and this would be projected onto a large screen for my kids to see)? Or would you think a 10" screen would be better?
Also, would this idea work, technologically? WiFi access of PC... this should allow writing on the tablet to write on the PC... SMARTboard would then show what I'm writing since it is a clone of the PC screen... I just need to make sure that I can easily control programs remotely from the tablet.
I know this may sound like a mess, but I really want to do my homework before spending money I don't otherwise NEED to spend. My smartphone (EVO 4G LTE) does all I need right now, but this would be a toy that I can also use daily for work. Thanks for any input you guys have! Feel free to ask questions if what I said didn't make perfect sense. I just know that XDA is the place to go for tech questions, and this is an awesome community.
Check out this app called Jump Desktop on the Google play store, might be what you're looking for.

Splashtop 2 is really good, works great with my computer.
A 7in screen should be fine if the app in question can zoom, or you dont mind less space.
I notice that with my remote desktop it doesnt matter if im zoomed in unless i try to name a file, or if im using photoshop to paint.
Realvnc for the win !

I would imagine the smartboard uses its own software, could you list the boards make/model? We might be able to help out a bit more. Otherwise you'll just be connecting your tablet to your computer via remote desktop and then using it to control your smartboard. I would imagine you would definitly lose some functionality that way and it would be hard to control with the small screen.
I would suggest either getting a netbook or small laptop and just face the class using it or get a stool to set it on, or to go to the google play store online and see if your smartboard has an app.
Good luck
That app has great reviews - and is cheap too! Thank you for the suggestion! I wish I could test out this system first, haha. Oh well, I'm sure there's a return policy I can use if something won't work.

I have done this actually
I love my nexus but i do NOT think its big enough..
when my arm was in a sling from surgery for over 5 months.. I would use SPLASH TOP .
My tablet was a 10 inch Acer a500 tablet connected thru my netgear wifi router in close proximity . to my Wired connection on the same router. With HDMI MIRROR to 42 INCH HD TV.. i used handwriting and photo shop on the tv screen . i think the 10 inch tablet was ok but the hand writing is hard because of the size of the screen on the tablet Drawing something say the 3 inches tall 1 letter on the tablet will show up as 4 feet tall on that display ..
Your software could have some zoom features in it to correct this. Other wise it would be difficult to make it work... its hard for my to explain the issue .
very doable if your program on the computer can overcome the zoom issue.. i THINK This is what the post above mine was saying..

+1 for Splashtop, but I would imagine there is some sort of Smartboard app specifically for Android devices. If there is such an app, that would probably be your best bet, but I don't know.
Splashtop on the other hand was the smoothest remote control software I've used. It's free as well (as long as your using it on a local network).

if there is a app for the smart board then a 7 in tablet will likely work .. the issue is the resolution and more so pixel density .. If the app will let you project say 1-4 ratio or what ever you need to make it work and resize then you could have a winner...
we use something similar to that smart board at work for blue prints..
ohh and +1 more for splash top Its best and i have tried them all.. the issue could lie in the speed and network ability of the xp pc
Unfortunately there is no SmartBoard app yet. Apple is getting one this fall, and Android MAY in the future. As for now, u can't bank on that.
I'm thinking the Samsung Tab 2 10.1 would be a good choice. Or maybe I should look into Windows Tablets... Hmm.

If you can wait till october- November I suggest you look into windows 8 tablet/PC which could do all of your computer functions with pen input and run all your computer applications.
I have a friend who is also an elementary school teacher and I recommended this device to her as she is also using the smartboard. I haven't used it myself but I think the size of screen is good for it unless you also already have a 10 inch tablet. But to each is own I know I write extremely small and she is more of a bubbly letter kind of gal so I can fit write more you could say.

I checked out tablets at Fry's Electronics today... 7" is definitely too small for this application.
Does anyone else have issues with accuracy of the styli out there today? I tried a few tablets and a few styli... I couldn't write an equation to save my life! It kept not reading it or appearing slightly above or below where I wanted. Then I tried the S pen on the Sammy Note 10.1... It was incredible! It was like writing on paper with a pencil! I don't wanna spend that much, but man that thing was incredible... I think that's what I may need.
Thanks for all of the help guys! Any other tips are still appreciated but I'm pretty sure I won't be a Nexus 7 owner...

[Q] 1024x600 metro apps

Hi all, does anyone know of a workaround to enable downscaling to permit metro apps on 1024x600? I'm use a custom display driver that doesn't allow the higher res, using the official win7 driver i have the higher res but the tablet is too slow. Any ideas?

No there isn't. The only other way is if u used another screen. Like on one of my laptops I have good enough res to use the apps but not good enough for other features. But I hooked it up to my tv with a vga cord (or a hdmi if ur notebook has one) then where u change the res u can make it only show image on the second screen (the tv) then u can chang the res as high as ur tv will allow. U can then get andromouse app on ur android and download the server on ur pc then u can sit back on the couch and use ur pc on the big screen

Supposedly the regedit method no longer works in the RTM or retail versions.
I have an old HP Mini that I installed Windows 8 on and it's max resolution was 1024x576. What I did, was I found a modified Samsung Intel GMA 950 driver and installed it on my netbook, it now gave me two additional resolutions... 1024x768 and one that was even higher. Certain things don't look all that great, but it's simple enough to switch back to 1024x576 when I'm in desktop mode where I spend most of my time. Regardless of which resolution or driver I'm using, it doesn't effect speed for me.
I was going to just stick with Windows 7 on the netbook, but Windows 8 boots up and runs so much nicer on the netbook that it's given it new life.

That is a hard code. Those little netbooks were so cheap for a reason. You can still run Windows 8 on them and use the desktop, which actually is a good idea because Win8 uses less resources and is faster on older hardware. I run it on a Lenovo X61 and basic operation is as good as my Lenovo Twist.

Worth upgrading with NON-TOUCH?

Alright, so i have been intrigued through commcercials and all about how Windows 8 works. What i want to know is, is it worth upgrading to windows pro 8 without a touchscreen PC?
I have a home built PC (desktop) that is blazing fast, and i also have a 31 inch monitor that supports 1080p. Is paying $40.00 worth getting the new version of windows? Or should i just stay with windows 7.
Please feel free to explain why when you answer, thanks!
Do it. Use the desktop until you get used to metro or whatever its called. But once used to it its amazing. I was immediately used to W8 day one.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda app-developers app
It's worth the $40 upgrades are going for. On the desktop side, it's very fast and clean, I'm surprised at how much I like the new Window trim... No superfluous gloss and transparency, all business. There are some nice additions like drive encryption, the new backup tool (the old one is still there for those who prefer it, which I personally do), the new task manager and file copy UIs, and IE 10 is surprisingly fast stable and, from what I've read, secure.
On the Metro side... It's interesting, and I see the utility of it for tablets, but between my work, which requires heavy multitasking between applications, and just the way I've come to use my computer, again, multitasking, Metro's full screen nature relegates it to little more than a curiosity. I have dual quad core xeons, and two large monitors, so having such strict limitations on how many apps I can have on screen is a bit of a non-starter for me. That and full screen apps designed for a 10 inch screen running on a 30 inch, 2560x1600 res monitor border on absurd. I would use Metro a lot more, and I think it would be far more attractive, both in utility and aesthetically, if it adapted to make optimal use of the typical screen real estate available on desktops. Simply scaling apps up, resulting in 60, 80 and sometimes even higher point size type is anything but optimal.
Personally, after adding the $5 Start8 app to get my familiar start menu back, I've found 8 to be a nice upgrade from 7. I'd have never spent the normal $130 on it, but again, for the current $40, I think it's worth it. Hopefully Microsoft will improve Metro's ability to use and adapt to available system resources before Windows 9. I want to like it, but in its current form, on a desktop, it's, as I said, a bit of a curiosity.
Just my .02
I actually enjoy windows 8 when the metro UI is used as a supplement to the regular explorer. I.e. install start 8 or classic shell and boot straight to desktop, I use the metro UI plenty, but do not use it primarily. I got a 15 dollar pro key and free media center key, which makes it a pretty good value.
Overall the interface is a lot more pleasant than win 7, it's something different, and it's refreshing. I really don't miss Aero at all, most programs that work with win 7 work well with win 8, except some AV software. No I do not have a touch input device.

It's not immediately obvious but in the start screen you can start typing and it will search. Also there is a search button on the charms bar but that is pretty pointless unless you want to search within an app like iHeartRadio for example.
Replying from so bare with me.
I work in a retail environment and I had to teach older adults about windows 8. I've learned that I'm not very fond of 8 on touch devices.
Truth is I've just gotten use to my mouse with windows 8.
Just remember the 4 corners get you around. Windows key gets you back to the launcher and windows+d gets you to classic mode .
I didn't explain it very elegantly but its pretty simple

IMO it's not worth upgrading if you have Windows 7 already (especially if you don't have touch) but if you're going to buy a new PC you should just get Windows 8
For 40 bux that's a steal! Touch screen or not at least having a legit copy for future use is totally worth it. I remember almost getting a copy of Windows Vista Home Premium for 299... 2 effing 99!! for a crappy version of Windows, and this! Windows 8 for 40 bux! Officially! Not to mention it works either way, touch screen or not.
Here's a summary I posted elsewhere:
Multimonitor support overhaul
File Explorer improvements with ribbon
Shorter boot times
Security enhancements
Faster file copying that can be paused and maintains a single window
Redesigned task manager
Integrated social and calendar applications
Native .iso mounting
Better battery usage
Cloud synchronization
File History continuous sequential backups
Backups to network drives
chkdsk that will take 10 secs each and every time rather than hours
Storage spaces for multiple hard drives (Like an OS-based RAID 0 or 1)
50% less RAM usage
Tighter CPU control
3G data monitoring
Vastly superior conflict resolution when copying files so you know exactly which files will be replaced and the exact differences
Copy/delete jobs that never stop halfway with an "are you sure?" message while you're AFK
Easy refresh and reset options in case of operating system failure
Windows Update which is now COMPLETELY automated and will never show a single popup ever again
UEFI motherboard support
Native USB 3.0 support
With the other, miscellaneous stuff like HYPER-V and other things that don't affect me- but may be of great use to others.
It's all the little changes that are everywhere that make the update worthwhile.
I have to agree. Make sure you try storage spaces. I have a bunch of drive installed now with all my media and I can add and swap drives as my media library grows.
We'll see how much I like once the first drive fails though.

With the other, miscellaneous stuff like HYPER-V and other things that don't affect me- but may be of great use to others.
It's all the little changes that are everywhere that make the update worthwhile.

Thanks for putting it down in a way that people could truly understand. I kinda think people just look at the surface (no pun intended) and don't take into consideration the overhauled system. The day to day performance gain is noticeable.

This review is on Windows 8 w/o touch on a multi monitor setup.
http://www.davejunia.com/2012/10/windows-8-a-detailed-review/
Broken down to traditional desktop, modern ui and windows store.
That was a good review. It made high lights of the good without sounding like a cry baby afraid of change

installed and adopted at office and home
- many people at office installed it on their laptop, and desktop and no complain/
Totally worth it,
and YES we can play STEAM game (for those who would like to know)
But my advice... installing windows 8 should be done on SSD.... a huge difference from office and home startup and program starting...
Home : Intel 520 - 240GB SSD
Office : poor old HDD sata 2 160GB
Enjoy

Thanks. The main idea was to give a direct non biased objective view.

[HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]Asus Zenbook UX31A Touch

For christmas, I got an asus zenbook touch. Best ultrabook I've ever owned. For 1100 dollars, you get an i5, 128gb ssd, touch screen, and intel 4000 graphics. It is a little steep for those specs but the build quality and touch screen completely make up for it in my opinion. It actually comes with a bunch of accessories too, a folio case, VGA adapter, micro usb cable, and an ethernet adapter. I can write up a full review if anyone wants.
I can answer any questions about it, too
Available here
I was eyeing that exact model at my local Best Buy earlier this week. I'm really torn between this Zenbook and Lenovo's Yoga.
Couple of questions:
How's the Battery Life with casual use?
Wifi issues?
SSD speeds? Did you get the Adata SSD or Sandisk SSD (should say on the box)?
Light bleeding in the screen? This was a major issue with the previous non-touch UX31As.
Is the paint chipping off by any chance?
My main worry with this Asus is that it only has 4GB of RAM and it cannot be upgraded. I'm just not sure if it'll be enough, how does it perform with this amount of RAM? Any hiccups when multiple web pages are up?
I believe that's about it for my questions lol. Thanks if you reply, I haven't logged into XDA for like a year and luckily I happened to find this thread. I really am digging this ultrabook, I need something durable, quick, and light for school that'll last me a good 3 years minimum while retaining its functionality as it was on day 1. Damn you Lenovo and your upgradable RAM, this would've been an easier decision if the Yoga didn't have upgrade options lol.

I'm enjoying my Toshiba T925u. It has about the same specs, but an 11.5 inch screen (not as high in resolution). It has a slide out keyboard for typing, or can be used as a tablet. A bit more expensive at around 1100. Toshiba is expecting them in stock in mid January; they seem to be out of stock everywhere.

Don't get the yoga, there's a plethora of problems with it. Light bleed is present but not a big deal for me at all. SSD speed is lightning fast, boot time is like 3 seconds. 3 seconds for a cold boot. No paint chipping. Battery life is around 6 hours with causal use. I actually have no idea what ssd it is.

If only US Bestbuy shipped internationally
Does anyone else know of any vendors for this besides ExcaliberPC (it's on backorder/preorder - confusing status)
Hey buddy will you able to put some pictures up for it?
Reason I ask is because I am an international buyer and wanted to see how the all black really looks over the weekend press shots, thanks

My sister and I just picked up two Yoga 13's last week. We both love them. The only issue we had was the wacky SSD partition scheme they had on them, but there was a fix available, and easily found, on the product support page. I'm loving mine. It replaced a 2 year old HP DM3 laptop.
I am looking into this model. Very much like the design and specs.
Wanna ask you whether the Windows 8 installation files are located in the SSD? If so... Can I remove them and save the installation files in a USB stick to install the OS later? From what I gather.... The ultra book does not come with installation files...

yes you can, just press "windows key + R" and type recoverydrive.exe, the window will guide you through the rest!
I've got the australian model (silver) but it does seem to come with torx screws on the bottom, dont feel like unscrewing them but is everyone sure you cant upgrade the ram on the touch model? I thought the porblem with the prime models was that you couldnt detach the bottom at all..? (but you seem to be able to with this model... 10GB ram would be nice )
10gb of ram would also be a bad idea in general.
In a laptop you only get 2 slots. Usually each slot will have a max capacity of either 4 or 8gb. To get 10gb across both slots, well, they don't make 5gb sticks so you would have to go with an 8gb and a 2gb. However you get access issues with unmatched sticks, its computer building 101, wherever possible use matched sticks (capacity, access speed, timings, everything, for all intents and purposes just use 2 of the same model). You could do 8gb or 16gb easily enough.
I personally live fine on 4gb. I seriously don't see why the majority of people need more. Although a few of my games have occasionally pushed me past 4gb used so I am considering upgrading to 8.

I know, but with as with the UX32VD I assume that if the ram would be replacable (which it probably still isn't) it would be only one slot, the other dimm is soldered on. So unmatched sticks (2 + 4 or 2 + 8) would be the only way to go. Just googled a little bit and it seems that the normal UX31A was also openable (i thought it wasnt) but only the battery and the SSD is exposed then, so probably no luck for the touch model after all.

Can't really speak for the UX, but on my Yoga, there is only ONE dimm, and there is not another one soldered on it. It's either single channel 4GB or single channel 8GB (8GB is the max for the motherboard and dimm).
Finally got the ultrabook. Enjoying it.
Just wondering whether is there any reason I should keep the ASUS apps that came with the ultrabook? Are they considered bloatware?
Any major consequences if I uninstall them?
Just an update.
I'm running Mint Linux on this ultrabook now.
Quite like it.
There's no need for Windows.
