Thinking of buying Atric 4g - Atrix 4G General

Yes, I realize this is relatively old phone, but I like the fingerprint thing and webtop. However, after Ubuntu for phones gets to working order, I would like to install that (I realize there is no kernel for it yet but assuming we will have one.)
Is this a good phone? How much lag on a motoblur rom? And how much in a cynogenmod rom? Would you recommend this phone to me? Or should I go with a new phone?
Sent from my RM-820_nam_att_100 using Board Express

Despite the fact that our developers are our hope for this device, motorola locked the bootloader with an update (and there is no workaround). Therefore, I wouldn't buy a device with the official ROM hoping to use the new kernel (in development).
Besides that, the original motoblur is pretty annoying and heavy, motorola didn't (and never will) update the device to ICS and NVIDIA didn't publish open source drivers for the phone.
Please, don't buy this... It's a trap!

If you get a fantastic deal on a used working phone why not? New devices are nice and more up to date on OS but that's not everything. Who knows what the devs will figure out. The seem pretty determined to crack the kernel.
Do make sure its not boot locked tho. That would be bad.

Do not buy this phone. Display is poor. The fingerprint reader is a waste of time and you will never use webtop. You would be better off buying a tablet if like the idea of webtop.
I would get on old galaxy s2 if you want a decent phone.

So I should get the used note 2? Not this? I honestly, just want it in preparation for a working( as daily driver) Ubuntu. Or the galaxy nexus. Those are my choices..either atrix, galaxy nexus, or note 2.

It's certainly enormous. For me, one of the most attractive features of the Atrix is that it is relatively compact for a phone with a 4" screen so it is easily pocketable.
That said, if I didn't need to carry my phone in my pocket, I would certainly consider something like the Note 2. I'm not sure it is really a valid comparison, however as the Atrix and Note 2 aren't exactly in the same price bracket, are they?
I'd imagine you ought to be able to get an Atrix pretty cheaply these days.

Got both of them(GNote2 an Atrix)
Note is feeling more like everyday use phone/tablet. Its good, not perfect and it can do anything you need. But it feel soulless, just another boring gadget.
Atrix is more about WOW, superphone with many docks, fingerprint scanner, broken promises, good vs evil and the whole story behind.
If you need some working machine, go for GNote. But if you need something to use it with a smile, go for Atrix.
BTW month ago I sold my GNex, I preffered to keep Atrix as my backup phone.

Of course get note 2 over atrix 4g, on atrix 4g the finger print scanner doesnt work half the time, screen sucks and not very sensitive, and webtop isnt as great as you think. Also the nexus 4 is a great choice instead of galaxy nexus, And why get a note 2 with the HTC one and the Galaxy sIV(4) just around the corner?

Because I'm looking for a cheap phone(if I get a note 2 I'm buying a used one) so if I can find a nexus 4 )to run Ubuntu when its stable) cheap I'll get that

I bought the Atrix 4G because I didn't want to waste money on a phone I didn't need and because it's dual core. With the ROMs that are out there, I think it'd be a good buy. It's best to stay on GB for now but there are working JB roms out there (but battery life isn't as good due to being beta). It's a pretty fast phone nonetheless considering when it came out.

So yeah I just bought one of these to use as a portable media player and I hope now I can root it after reading this! Still it's unlocked and was only £50 so hopefully it works out, if not back on eBay!

50 quid sounds a pretty good price if it is in good nick.
If you're thinking of using the Atrix HDMI output to play video on external displays, note that the Tegra 2 has limitations in playback of h264 High Profile video at 720p or above. If you have a search around, you ought to be able to find suitable encode settings for video.
Unfortunately, you'll not be able to get as good quality HD video playback as many other phones!

Pantech Burst is good value. It has ICS, and a1.5 dual core processor. I've gotten two on eBay for around 80.
Samsung Galaxy SII is a good choice too.

Thanks for the replies. Just planning on using it as a glorified Android mp3 player. Not running videos out to TV or anything just some video watching and listening music. The 16GB storage plus Micro SD support attracted me.
It was 50 quid because the screen is intermittently non responsive in places. Seems a common fault but hoping it's just something loose. Was also looking at Galaxy S phones for 16GB also but we'll see how this works out first.
Sent from my Nexus 4

Yeah thanks I've seen that, will be trying it out as soon as my Atrix arrives (well I have to go pick it up from the post office).
Have you done the fix?

Still a Buyable Device

So NewEgg has a deal on the Galaxy tab currently (30 dollars off plus 50 dollar gift card) and was wondering if it is still something worth buying. Considering the progress made with HC as is, I can only expect it to get better if/when Google releases source.
For the price, is it still something you would buy today?
I just bought mine a couple of weeks ago and have no complaints. It gets used way more than my Asus Transformer does. I love the 7" screen, perfect size for me.

Was looking at the transformer too. May I ask why? Is it too big?
Exactly. Try reading a book with a 10" device always seem to need two hands. Typing with both thumbs on the Tab vs finger pecking on the transformer. The size of the 7" is perfect for me.

its worth buying if you can get a deal.
As mentioned above 7" is a major bonus. By implication though it means you really want 3G as well. When I was contracting (and hence moving around, taking a lot of different public transport routes etc.) it was an awesome travel companion. It also makes it a great ereader in a pinch.
Custom ROM it and performance is pretty good, esp. as Samsung's browser is hardware accelerated.
If its going to be sitting on your coffee table w/ wifi though, or the price is comparable to a 'current' honeycomb Tegra 2 10" slab, I'd go honeycomb/dual core. There's not much of an upgrade path for it, honeycomb is going to be an unofficial port (if at all?)
I got mine at a knockdown price and really like it. However I still wouldn't have paid RRP for it (by the same token I'm not paying RRP for transformer etc. or even ipad so duh)

Agreed... pretty easy to find on ebay or CL for $250 or less... picking up another one tomorrow for $200... Almost as good a deal as the HP TP and a lot more clarity about its future, apps, upgradability, etc.
It's still a great device. Is it the newest and latest? Nope. Will it run tons of great apps and be a solid performer for most of your uses? Sure! Now is also the time to snap up cheap discounted cases and other accessories for the 7".
I flashed the Overcome ROM on mine after I was tired of waiting on T-Mobile for the 2.3 update. That's a great ROM. Super battery life, video calling (with FFC working great) via Google Talk, excellent ebook reader, calls over Google Voice with Groove IP, etc etc.
I say this even though I also have the Galaxy 10.1. That's for lazy home use. I can take the 7" with me just about everywhere.

funny, I have the same mindset/usage pattern between my Galaxy Tab and my iPad...
I been hearing great things about the SGS2 so I set aside the cash for it and yesterday went to get it but came back without making the purchase.
When I held it in my hands I just couldnt figure out how the puny screen could be any better than my SGT. Battery life is similar, I can run similar or same applications and both can do depending on what I install from the market. With the custom ROMs my SGT OS is probably higher version, less buggy and smoother than what I would get on the SGS2. Yea there might be some new high tech capabilities but do I need it. Most likely not and at this time don't even know what they are.
So I gave up the idea of going smaller than the 7". Quite a while back I kicked the idea of going bigger than 7". I can still put my SGT in my back pocket or my jacket breast pocket and cary it with me anywhere. Try doing that with anything biger than 7".
For me there is absolutely no good reason to go for anything else for a while.
Yep, still worth buying.

I'm looking at buying another used one for $200CDN for my GF. She prefers the Galaxy Tab over the Transformer as well.
I'm thinking about buying 3 of these for the office because of the portability. It would make a great tool for our QC department.
Definitely worth buying. Look at my signature of what I have had and look at which tab is still standing. The 7" form factor is the best. Not to mention this thing plays any video I've thrown at it. Such was not the case for the others tabs.

smashed my x10i two weeks ago in thiland on holiday (would not boot)
cam back home and brought a nexus s for $300 AUD outright unbranded
camera is pretty good but shame it is not 8.1mp and no 720p video
battery is awsome i am geting twice as long as my x10i had to charge 3x on a friday?
speed is incredible you are geting what 2.3 was built for
lack of SD slot a shame but 16GB is prerty good
i would have like to wait for the galaxy s but money and time (could not live with using my HTC magic anymore)

Hi,
I'm thinking of getting a Nexus S for a friend as well.
In your day to day use (say any activity except for gaming), have you had any performance issues at all? Have you noticed any lag?
Thanks!
I'm using Nexus S after selling my Sgs I9003.
Works great with major custom rom, for instance, CyanogenMod7 and MIUI.
If you want your phone be able to got the latest and fastest rom upgrade from google,
then Nexus S would be a suitable phone for you.
It's comparatively spendable in price.
I bought it for Rp.3.999.000,- on Global Teleshop Yogyakarta.
And now, I already loved it....

Not any worth noting I have only had to restart the phone once and it was a Telco issue any way (would not send sms) where My x10i was being rebooted at least 3 times a day running 2.3.
I do like moding my phones but atm i have yet to unlock the nexus mainly because Andriod is getting to the point where there is realy no need to. it just works. (maybe need to get proxys working soon for work )
Bought this phone off someone for $250 wasn't really used. Perfect condition. I would say go for it if you are doing a hardware upgrade. I would have to say - the lack of SD and gorilla glass (not to mention some models dont have AMOled), might as well pay a few more for the new Nexus or GSII. =)
I bought one a month or so ago (roughly) that was only a little over a month old for $150
It's a good phone. I don't like how it feels like cheap plastic (I miss the feel of the Nexus One) but other than that, no complaints. The screen is gorgeous.
I'm content... just impatiently waiting for the CyanogenMod super-geniuses to make some Ice Cream Sandwich magic
you should wait for nexus prime
I have SGS2 but i just ordered Nexus S yesterday. woohoo can't wait!!
so i'll have 2 samsung's by next week!
currently is the best phone you can find with a low price and can still work perfectly another year (waiting for next Nexus)

Why SS? As its 5.3in screen? And will you loss the Lapdock with full Ubuntu computer? And are you sure you leave the pretty good GPS/GSM/Wifi of Atrix to get GNote which is almost bad in radio especially in GPS like every Ss handset? Why dont you change to Droid Razr Maxx?
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Also don't forget that Atrix already have an ICS ROM built by some awesome devs! So, why to expend money on a new device while your current one can handle all the new stuff without breaking a sweat?
I wanted a Note, Saw one and the first thing that came to my mind was "dam I will not fit on some of my pockets" Really I lost interest on it, not functional for me as a "portable phone" It even feels weird holding it on your hand.
I'd give the latest built of CM9 with 2D acceleration a shot, before you make your mind up.
+1 for keeping the Atrix and putting ICS(CM9) on it. Feels like a brand new phone!
You can't compare the Atrix with die Glaxy note. The Atrix ist still a Mobilphone with its 4" Inch and the Galaxy Note ist more a Tablet with its 5.3 inch.
So if you want to surf the internet with possibilty to use the device as a phone than get the Galaxy Note.
But in my opinion keep the Atrix becaus with the Lapdock you have a much better device for the internet and without the lapdock you have a nice phone which you can easyly carry around.
And the performance of the atrix is still good and maybe some phone are better but IMHO i dont buy a phone to beat all the others in some benchmarks
wait for quad core phones later this year. No reason to change until then.

Not getting the s4, maybe xperia z if Sony gets their sh*t together and releases c6606 soon. I don't use my phone much for gaming anymore, especially larger games like NFS. That's what the N10 is for.
I won't get a S4 unless I win one

Absolutely no chance. 16GB is more than enough for me, Touchwiz is hideous, Exynos devices are notoriously difficult to port AOSP roms to and the device itself will probably be hideous too. I'd much rather have my N4
only is samsung blows the htc one away, i loved the s2 but loathe the build quality of the s3
nex4 is fine, until nexus 5 is out. then i'll switch. its not about specs. i want a free and unregulated android, google is the only one who provides that. i love software and seeing it progress, i couldn't cope with being locked out of everything that concerns android, for a couple of gb. i can't even imagine how a samsung customer watches the I/O, probably they don't, but if they do - how do they manage seeing all the nice things knowing full well its not for them. don't they feel strange when 2 hours after its over leaks rain over xda and everyone's running the latest and greatest, and they just have to wait until next fall?

And no I will not switch either. I was close to buying a s3, but the software wasn't up to par with what I am used to. My last device was the Sensation and I took off Sense 3.0 as fast as I could for JB lol. Like moles said, the customizations in just plain Android is great IMO, no need to embellish it with multiple windows or smartscrolling
It will sell on name alone regardless looking and feeling like any other TW device
I don't need a still plastic-y, spec bumped Galaxy S3. After owning the Nexus 4, Samsung is child's play. I've owned and used over a dozen android phones since '08 and the Nexus 4 is the best I've owned/used.
Still, I can't wait to at least play with the Galaxy S4 even though it will feel like an S2 and S3.

Not a chance. I have a N10 for things like that, didnt like the build of my Galaxy Nexus (Samsung), dont want a bigger screen and think the skins are horrid.
I love my N4 and won't want a GS4...am I curious about it and its hardware? Sure I am a tech nut and am always curious about new stuff...just like when the new iPhones come out I sit and watch the apple videos and such to learn about it...does it mean I want either? Hell no I don't like touch wiz, or the fact that Samsung still uses hard ware buttons and I don't like iOS or the fact that it hasn't changed in 4 or 5 years other than little things or craptastic things like siri...I love owning nexus devices for one simple reason...the software...besides that this phone is fast as heck on the processor side of things and it just so happens to be one hell of a good looking phone with the added bonus of being unlocked and not bound to some 2 year agreement makes it all the more sweeter with out shelling out $600+ like I would if I wanted the newest galaxy s iteration.

I have owned the Galaxy S, S2, S3 ,Note and Note2 and i liked them all (especialy the Note2) but Nexus devices have something extra imo. Easy to root and restore, fast, no bloatware, and always the latest updates and getting them first.
I think my avatar and device roster answers the question.

dev support doesnt mean crap when they have no sources. you get a lot of devs supporting one another by lending a shoulder to cry on or distributing kleenex. i am a follower of teamhacksungs blogs and dev g+ accounts, i like to read what they do. if you have nerves you best go there and take a good look what happenes when samsung releases the next big closed thing coz these guys are basically ****ed, they can sit down now for months and hack stupid things that should be open in the firstplace.
I just don't think an upgrade is necessary. 720p to 1080p is not that big of a difference compared to the jump from QHD or WVGA to 720p, and the S4 Pro is handling everything with ease. When the processor starts falling behind that I can notice it in daily use, or one of the technologies advances in a major way (battery, maybe?), I don't think I will be selling my nexus for another phone.

I rather wait till nexus 5

Will you be getting the next Nexus 7?

Been thinking about it myself. If they have HDMI or MHL out, I'm sold.

Asus has to cut corners to meet Google's price point, so no.

Depends on what the specs end up being and whether or not I get an Android phone (currently using an iPhone 5). I may do a flip and go from Android tablet/iOS phone to iOS tablet/Android phone... or I may ditch iOS altogether. I know what the vote would be on this forum

Hey, don't be that fast to assume. I own a lot of tablets and my iPad is almost always my go-to device, mainly because I personally have no use for widgets so most Android tablet launchers are wasted on me.
for sure
You never know. All Nexus devices are sold at cost.
One of the big downfalls of the N7 was the lack of Video Out. Although, now with Android Sticks and the Ouyas, I'm not sure if it is really needed anymore. My N7 works so well that it would be hard to give it up, but they are still super nice and possibly able to sell for $100+. Right now, I'd say no... but once it is released, I'm sure I'll pick it up. Something typically always surprises me and makes it a no brainer.
The price is low enough that selling your old device > new device makes it a great buy.
The sad thing is that I need to sell my existing devices. I have a brand new, in the box, Nexus 7 32gb and my current N7 32gb. If I pick up a new one, my old lady will flip her lid.
So I am in no rush to grab one and I will probably wait it out to see if it is really worth the upgrade.

The reason I'm considering getting an iPad (it would be a Mini, by the way) is because iOS 7 has actually impressed me quite a bit in day-to-day use. I've also fallen in love with Jelly Bean over the last 5 months or so of using my Nexus 7. That leaves me in a quandary where I'm not partial to either and there are some compelling reasons to have one of each, especially the combo I'm considering.
I was going to, but not anymore. I broke my 8gb n7 about two weeks ago and have a nice payout from square trade, but the issue is that now I need my tablet. I have grown impatient with Google's lack of released info this year on dates and prices, however its safe to assume its going to be more expensive. I decided to grab a 32gb n7 that's presently $199 instead. Its still a healthy upgrade for me and I can use my old cases and accessories. I also like to play with ROMs so the older device will of course have better support for awhile.

The lack of tablet apps kind of discourage me to get the next n7...
I've had a 16GB N7 for almost a year and it's been a great tablet. Besides one issue I had with it not charging it has worked VERY well. I've never had any of the (somewhat) common issues like screen separation and it's still plenty fast. With that said I recently returned a new 32GB N7 that I purchased for $199 at Microcenter. I'm glad I did because the 32GB model is now $30 less at Staples. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it - zero build quality issues and it seemed noticeably faster than my 16GB model. I just don't want to get stuck with last years hardware if the new N7 is a big upgrade at a similar price.
In my opinion, it's unfair to compare an actual, available device to rumors, so I'm going to wait for official specs & price for the new N7 before making up my mind which one to buy.
I totally agree with you that the 32gb model is faster, esp loaded with cm10.1 and lean kernel. I also had an issue with one if the 32gb units, the staples mgr and I figured out they had a batch of units from batch D20 that were all defective with various issues. He broke out a D10 and its flawless. FYI if anyone sees any issues with theirs and what batches to look out for.

IMO these company's need to learn to give us what we want. I want a HDMI out, SD card. If the new Nexus does not have it, I'm not buying it.
There are to many other company's willing to put out a device that has what I want/need, so they will get my business.
Besides, even the new Sero 7 pro does everything I need it do to. Why would I need to buy a new Nexus with a faster processor and better resolution when after all, it's just a 7 inch tablet, not a PC. Once it got to the point where HD movies and games played without pausing or stuttering, what's the point of a faster processor?
I'll get the next on when/if my 32g dies! Not before.

No. I don't really even want a tablet anymore after my bittersweet relationship with the n7.

Probably SlimPort, or at least I hope it is since I already have one for me N4.

I will be. I held off on getting the first gen for too long since my xoom has been more than adequate. I am getting antsy though and would like the smaller format for outside the house.
Probably not, my nexus 7 is fine for now, and when I get a new tablet is probably going to be a Galaxy note.
Touchwiz is meh, but that spen on my phone has sold me, i love to do art work with it.

I was thinking about getting one. But after Staples lowered the price of the 16GB to $149 out the door I just had to get it. I could careless about a camera and SD slot so the original nexus is perfect for me...

Am I the only one that thinks tablet apps look like crap on 7" tablets in portrait mode? On a 10" tablet, sure they are great...but that is because you use them in landscape. 7" portrait is just too cramped IMO. I am OK with the lack of true tablet apps on the play store.....once I get a nexis 10 my view WILL change though.
Also, depending on what the current nexus 7 is going for around here I might pick it up. Extra power, double ram, and higher re screen would be awesome.

I for sure will get the next nexus 7, either that or the next nexus 10, not sure there, but I love the size of the 7 , but mine has screenlift real bad and is laggy and slow (original 16gb) so it sits around collecting dust
