[INFO] Note to all ROM makers

There seems to be issues with baksmali/smali v1.2.6 when deodexing latest samsung roms (2.3.4 maybe also some 2.3.3!).
If you baksmali framework.odex and smali it back to a dex file (without changing anything) your ROM will become laggy!
Some people say its the hardware acceleration that no longer works.
The web browser becomes unusable. There have been reports that video player and camera also seems laggy.
My suggestion is NOT to deodex framework.odex! I'm sorry to say this...
I know this means no custom deodexed roms! But I do believe you will run into more problems we don't know about yet!
But you can still do mods!
Just not deodexed framework mods. You can deodex apk files in the app folder. You can also try and deodex files in the framework folder as long and you dont deodex the framework.odex file! But here you have to convert them back to odex files!
As proof I have made this mod for stock XXKG1. I have the odexed the files back to odex using the dexopt-wrapper tool.

It is not just 1.2.6, I have built from the latest source and still has problems.

I have no speed issues beyond that stupid browser, and that looks just like a baksmali bug. I don't do the "quit" attitude - I will fix it...
But anyway, there is no lag or anything here, even on 2.3.4 deodexed and underclocked.
So while there may be a browser issue, I would not suggest to people not to deodex. I can provide thousands of posts of people happy with a properly Deodexed and optimised ROM...

I hope you are right... But alot people also complains about all sorts of problems with the custom roms... and we dont really know if its related to this or not...

I spent all yesterday thinking about that...
The odex file is only valid when used with the exact BOOTCLASSPATH files. dalvik enforces this by storing a checksum of each file that the odex file is dependent on, and ensuring that the checksum for each file matches when the odex file is loaded.
When you are deodexing an apk, even if you don't need to set BOOTCLASSPATH for it (because you don't get any error msg while baksmali), by default these 5 jar are already included in the classpath: core.jar, ext.jar, framework.jar, android.policy.jar and services.jar. This means that an odex file has dependencies on every "BOOTCLASSPATH" file that is loaded when it is generated.
So i was thinking about to deodexing every apk in /system/app a part Browser.apk (i.e leaving Browser.odex) and try to figure out which jar file inside /system/framework has to remain odexed.
Maybe we can still have overscroll glow mod, renounce to have the extended power menu in order to get an HW accellerated Browser!
I don't know if it make sense for you as my english need to be improved

You got any examples to hand?
The common issues I see are
- failing to read my install instructions
- trying to come from some other ROM without following the instructions
- trying to restore titanium backups entirely, depositing apps that are codes like half-polished turds in the phone
- pushing incorrect files into rom without knowing what they are doing
- stupid setcpu config
Am interested to see if you have found other issues, as camera and video player are confirmed by a fair number to be fine...
I swapped my phone with one running stock, and I had to tell my friend what I had done, as he was sure it was his oh, and I was underclocked to 800 max too at the time

The frameword.odex is not compiled correctly!! That's a fact!! The laggy browser proofs it. Framework.odex the largest most important file in the android framework!! And that does not concern you? Is that not a bit naive?

I believe what I see. I have asked HomerSp if he can take a look at it, when he can, as he knows a lot about the deodexing process.
But at the end of the day, while there is clearly something not working in baksmali or smali, this seems a good opportunity to fix it and pass on the fix to JF
I know what is in framework.jar, and that it covers most things...
I do genuinely have interest in seeing the issues you raised, as perhaps there is disparity between methods of deodexing??? I am interested to see if I can reproduce any here too, as that would highlight a wider issue.

Well.... I will not use deodexed custom roms so I won't find any issues!!! But some people probably will or already has...
I'd rather spend my time on fixing this and create odexed mods until its fixed!
As soon as I see that the framework.odex can be compiled without breaking the browser... I might try some custom roms again..

That's weird. I'm using Lite'ning 1,5 ROM (which is deodexed) since i bought this phone and everything runs very smooth (including browser, video playback, gaming, launcher and so on). Before i had HTC Desire Z with CM7 on it and it was freezing slow if compared to my current setup. It's just flying.

I know that version (2.2) does not include the original stock browser but a patched version.

You're basing all your points on 1 main problem, the browser.
That's hardly the way to go. Rather, they will work to solving the problem regarding the browser, then we can continue to have proper custom roms. Besides, KG1 is a leaked rom. Deodexing didn't affect KF2, it might not cause problems for later leaked or "official" roms.
Rather than directing others to your odexed mods, the way for things to move on is to see the problem being fixed. There's a reason why custom roms are almost always deodexed. Don't rock the boat if you don't like the status quo.

That's actually exactly what I am saying!! Don't spend time on fixing the browser! Spend time on fixing the baksmali/smali tools!!
But until that's fixed I believe you can't really rely on the deodexed roms because framework.odex does not compile correctly!!
Some people said that you can't do mods that are odexed!! Thats the reason for the example! You actually don't need to deodex the framework!! But I admit.. it's easier not to odex files...

BTW guys, following the OP IDEA i got my own custom rom working with the odexed stock Browser (i.e. HW accellerated).
Basically all the apps have been deodexed apart Browser, and i left the framework jar files odexed!
Basically i got the same features/mod as before, the only think i have to renounce is the overscroll glow effect (i don't like it at all, i prefer the stock Samsung bounce effect) and the extended power menu (we can easily replace it by using quickboot).

I agree with you, but at least, since a lot of people complain about the stock browser, we can stay happy with it!
I reckon we need new tool for deodexing, smali backsmali are dated now...

Is deodexing necessary?

So lately I've been trying to find as much info on deodexing as I can. So far I've gathered that it alters the code or files somehow so they are able to be modified one at a time rather that in groups which can cause undesirable results. But my real question is if I plan on flashing a different rom to my phone do I need to deodex the stock rooted rom first? Or should I deodex the phone after I flash the rom (assuming the rom isn't pre deodex'd) if there are other threads that answer this question I m sorry for reposting about it but I haven't turned up much so far that answers all my questions

deodexing necessary? no. stock phones are odexed like crazy. what deodexing does however is free up space on the rom, allow for quicker execution of apps, system processes, etc. think of it like a computer full of crap that is unnecessary. it's going to slow it down. but if you clean up the computer, defragment the hd(zipalign the apks) your machine will run substantially better.
With that said, many roms will include certain code in the script to deodex your phone upon installation. There are also certain update.zip files that are soley dedicated to deodexing your phone. Do some searching. everything i just stated could be found by searching.

Thanks so much, I have read what you stated on some other forums but I really appreciate you saying it in a different way. My biggest problem is that often times I just need to read or hear something described differently to understand it so again thank you very much.

It depends on exactly what you want to edit. PNG files dont require deodexing, however, some html edits do, as well as smali edits.

Hey People!! I'm new to XDA and this is my first post :silly: I'd like to introduce a new ROM. So basically i want to make something different for the galaxy y- the phone we've all loved to love! I want to have a redesigned launcher looking somewhat similar to the ICS ad Jellybean with softkeys like the one on ICS. It should be Deodexed rooted and have access to many other features (like pre-installed chainfire and stuff like that :fingers-crossed: ). Im planning on updating the stock kernel to the Merruk Technology Pre-final v2.0 as i've used it and it seems pretty fast and stable (I'm still waiting for the build to be final). I've a Init.d hack with battery calibration and also a hack which (I don't know how) decreases your ram usage haven't tested it yet but people who've used it says it works on stock rom too (which to me seems impossible because stock rom dosen't support init.d. Correct me if i'm wrong :highfive I've decided what to call it too. Now i only need some help which if anyone could offer would be truly amazing to me........

About bugs, first make the custom rom. If you encounter a bug, tell us and we'll be happy to help you.

could you please post the links of such posts which contain methods of themeing the status bar and launchers??? and also how do you edit some apks which ive downloaded from the play store??

Go to /data/app/ you will see all your apps there....
After getting those apk you can freely edit...

I too m making a rom but i think theming is much more difficult than making a rom so i suggest use someone's theme and ask him for permissions:thumbup:

New Galaxy Tablet 7.0 - want to root it.

Just picked up a new galaxy tablet 7.0 (8GB) about a week ago. Great device so far and love it. I just can't stand the preloaded bloatware on the device and the space its taking up. It's currently running version 4.0.4
I've read up a bit up on ROMS and rooting the device. Seem pretty comfortable with it just have a few questions.
1) Do I need an SD card in the device in order to root it?
2) Best rom out there? Appears like the most talked about rom is the Cyanogen Mod 10?

No you don't need an SD Card but you may as well get one as you will need it once you start making nandroid back ups. Your tab fill up quickly ! Not to mention media and apps on top of that as well. Bigger the better to be honest.
No such thing as the best ROM, Once you are rooted try them all out and find one that suits your needs. I love AOKP M1( link in my sig) as you can customize it more than CM10 and has better features IMO.
If you dont want to customize it , try a deodexed stock based ROM with all the bloat removed, ROMSWELL makes some cool ROMS. Search the DEV section of this forum.
As i said its a personal choice , so flash them and try them out. Wont cost you anything apart from some time..... If you need help just ask and someone will give you some advice. Don't forget to flash some GApps ( Goggle Applications) as they are not normally included in a ROM due to copyright issues.
Most of all have fun. :laugh:

Thanks for the info! So the 4.0.4 is not jelly bean but its ICS?
How can I not download Jelly bean.. when I try to do an update it says its the most recent one..
I did see that some ROMS allow you to OC the device, so squeezing that extra little juice out of it I wouldn't mind either

Yeah you're trying to update "stock" and its not been released as yet to the general public.....So flash a custom ROM (once you have root)
Once you root , forget about Samsung updates as they wont work any more, But the XDA community devs do that for us much quicker than Samsung does !
Heres a rough guide from Codeworkx (CM10)
First time installing CyanogenMod 10 to your Galaxy Tab 2, or coming from another ROM:
- Make sure you're running a proper working ClockworkMod-Recovery
- Copy GApps and CM10 ZIPs to your internal SDCard ( or the external SD Card )
- Boot into Recovery
- Flash CM10 zip from internal SDCard
- Flash GApps zip from internal SDCard
- DO A DATA WIPE / FACTORY RESET
- Reboot

Thanks for your help! Great info there. Are any of these ROMS more complex than the other? I just don't want to get into it too deep or too complex and having more of a issue getting things up and running properly or are these all the same complexity when installed? ie.. customization etc..

Aokp is very similar to CM based ROMs. They are as easy to set up as a stock ROM, only they allow for more tweaks than a factory ROM. The only thing that you have a to do with a custom rom is flash gapps(Google apps) usually in the rom thread. Read, reread, and grow a pair. The fear will turn into a high that draws you in. There is a reason that the term crack-flashing was born. It is very simple to do it on this tablet. If you have any trouble pm me, or post here, and I will walk you through it. I just did it a couple of days ago for my daughters. Good luck

I really dont like the way CM10 handles the navigation bar , where as AOKP lets you do as you wish to it. And I like the toggles it uses as well.
Dump stock what ever you do, Dont get me wrong I love the Samsung stock ROMs as they look stunning and the widgets are top class.The music/video players are quality. You will also gain some space on your tab as well. Stock ROMs are around 750MB and custom ROMs are normally under 200MB
Stock has no theme engine as such , that means if you want to change the way it looks ( other than wallpapers) you will have to start decompiling some system .apks ( Applications ) and it gets a tad tricky messing with .xmls.and getting it all working again.
With the theme engine in place you have 100s of themes to choose from ( over 500 in fact) and plenty of mods you can flash as well, You can even edit themes either online or on your PC with some XDA made applciations ( I use "tickle my android" personally to make themes / Edit apks like widgets n stuff )
CM10/AOKP are always being updated ( But AOKP has stopped development for the moment as I mentioned above , until 4,2 is ported) CM10 has a preview build out already.Both ROMs have a ROM control option to pimp your device up as well.
If you look through this thread , you can see most of the main ROMs and what we all do with them. :laugh:
I tend to flash most of the new ROMs just to try them out. When I'm done messing around with it all I do is boot into recovery and restore my nandroid back up and I'm back to the way I was .Its kinda like system restore on a Windows PC.
Get stuck on anything , just ask as most of the forum members are all pretty cool and more than willing to help out.
My advice is......GO FOR IT !!11!!!1 What you got to lose ?

Reading some of this stuff I am overwhelmed. So in order to backup the device up I need to root it first?
I will start with the HOW TO ROOT YOUR TAB thing now and see how far I get..

So I started last night and let's say didn't get very far. Downloaded the neccessary files but for some stupid reason the Kies software (needed to install this to get the drivers installed for the tablet so I can transfer the contents to it) was not installing.
I left my laptop on during the night and it never finished installing the software. I obtained it right from the Samsung Support website.
Any idea what could be causing this?
Also, once I do get this software installed so that the device shows up under Windows Explorer so I can drag the neccessary .zip files to it. Is there a specific location on the device I should place the files on? I do not currently have a SD card in the tablet.
Oh and my device model is a GT-P3113

So I managed to install Kies.. Guess it was getting hung up on .NET framework 4. So I just downloaded and installed myself and then tried the Kies thing and it went right through the install.
So now I should be good to actually see the device in Windows Explorer once I plug it in.
My question still remains, any particular spot on the device I need to place the .zip files for rooting?

Anywhere you can easily find the tar.md5 file on your windows drive, the*cwm-root-gtab2.zip goes to*/mnt/extSdCard which is the root, don't place in a file. I rooted mine via http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25228-how-to-rooting-gt-p3113-step-by-step-updated-07182012/

Okay.. so /mnt/extSdCard is if you have a SD card in the device.
But I do not have a SDcard, that is why i am actually asking does it matter where I place the files within the tablet internal storage due to not having a micro sd card.

Well, do your own research. There is a table of contents in the 7" dev forum, go read the rooting method there and also in the general section. Also, I'm not responsible for what others post and, you can ask the other guy how he rooted his without an sd. I recommend reading about rooting before doing it. I will say this is the easiest device to root.

So I managed to root the device. Was pretty straight forward once I got going. I installed AOKP milestone 1 rom as per someones suggestion here saying it's stable. Overall it does look nicer now and smoother only a couple of questions.
1) I took a backup or the stock stuff before doing anything after performing the root. Now I noticed all the data is gone lol.. Is there anyway to get the data back? Mainly the game progress and all the other stuff?
2) I see AOKP has a theme function under it's settings, currently there is only 1 listed. Where does one obtain themes for it? It's not in the Play Store, is it?
3) Saw the overclocking option also, does that mean the overclock can be pumped up to 1200mhz?
Guess my main question now is whether or not I can get that data back lol..

If you performed a factory reset after flashing your custom ROM, which you should have anyway, I'm sorry to say you have lost your data.

Sure did.. Oh well now I'll know at least and look into the actual backup apps to backup game progress.
The .zip files I put on the table prior to rooting, like fix-recovery, the clockwork mod file as well as the actual ROM, can those be removed off the tablet now?
I played around a bit last night and I found the THEME Choose on the Play Store and I saw themes.

1) which app do you use to back up? some apps only back up apk and some other back up the data too
2) you can find aokp/cm theme on playstore, usualy nice theme will cost more
3) yes you can overclock it via ROM control on setting

help me root/rom

I have broken my htc one I got from my brother so I am back to using the sgs4 I have, never planed to use the htc one for so long it just happens that way because of the speakers I used it to play music at work anyways I am going to use the sgs4 and root/rom it
I have rooted/romed in the past with my sgs1 using cm9 and used odin so I understand most thigns
not sure what info is useless here since I have been out of this for a while now, I actually posted about this same topic a while ago but then I got a htc one and with my ADD I forgot about this

Safe Root works great for our phone. Here is the link: http://www.droidviews.com/root-verizon-galaxy-s4-sch-i545-on-android-4-3-vruemk2/ . I know, it takes you off of xda, but you can root your phone with out using odin. It is quick and easy. You can then install a twrp through goo manager. No need to use odin for that. Good luck.

I used CF Auto root. Its awesome.
Then I used ROM manager from the market to flash in CWM.
In my reading I saw most.the recoveries being used were Philz and TWRP.
So after I let ROM manager flash CWM I DL.the latest Philz zip and flashed it from recovery.
Made many a nandroid and jump from TW to AOSP every day. *****The one thing you need to know is....have SE Linux checked under misc nandroid settings****otherwise it's no fun.

so I have used cf auto root and installed cwm the rommanager that worked pretty well
I will assume that installing roms is the same as before after this
I am glad to see that things have been simplified here I will post back if I have problems again
I am wondering what is the best rom for me, I dont really care much if I have the touchwiz I used midnightrom and CM9 on my sgs1 epic before and loved it the lack of touchwiz wasnt a problem for me - I dont like any of the samsung apps at all and never want to use the sprint apps, I would not like it if the widgets go away I use those for my btc prices and my mining rig hashrate
I could use a stock rom for this phone if all the crappy sprint apps have been removed
like I said I have been out of this game for a while and at the time CM9 was just about the best rom out so I used that, all the others were good just didnt have as many features

Everyone has their own preferences, so you just need to look at what's available. The great thing about Android is that there are so many options, but that creates a fair amount of work too. With root you can delete whatever app you want, so bloatware isn't much of an issue. To see what apps are safe to remove, most ROM developers post what they remove. You can also freeze the apps using things like Titanium Backup, so that you can easily restore them if you decide you want something back.

yea I know there are lots of roms, what are some of the most stable roms out - I can see that the cyanogenmod is only nightly builds nothing stable is that a problem, I havent seen CM in this forums on the first few pages so is it not one of the better ones anymore?
what are a few of the most stable roms that have most of the features that would be needed - nothing that has strange glitches like in the past there were problems with GPS working and a few other things

What you are asking for is HERE in these forums. PLEASE do your own searching and research for these answers This particular question "..Best ROM" is one of the biggest no no's across all XDA.
Search, READ, experiment and you will find what suites you.

I am going to skirt the "best rom" issue and just drop a list of what has been good for me... If you try all of these you'll certainly find one that works for you. I have intentionally mixed up the order here to avoid hurting anyone's feelings.. LOL

you are absolutely right I dont know why I even asked that "best rom" it was stupid I admit it I feel stupid about that one I dont want to say I mistyped but I wasnt thinking I totally understand the reason why its a bad question to ask and why there isnt a real answer so I am sorry and I do know its one of those things you dont ask I have read that in the past but I forgot or something
what I ment to say was mainly what roms are the most complete in the sense that they have all the things working that should be like gps/wifi/4g/lte things like that, in the past a few roms were missing things like that
are there any that certain apps wont work for? I use and rely on "no led" app I just love the way it shows the colored icons on screen

The big split in ROMs is between touchwiz and AOSP. Touchwiz is Samsung's layer on top of the core Android Google produces. Some features like multi-window, the standard Samsung keyboard, air gesture, etc. rely on touchwiz to work. I'm sure you can find a complete list of what relies on touchwiz to see if any of it is important to you. I think most ROMs will have all radios working, but like others have said, just make sure to have backups of your current setup to go back to and experiment, and since you already have the MK2 modem, make sure whatever ROM you choose is compatible with MK2. It doesn't take all that long to flash different ROMs and see what you think.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but custom ROMs just take existing modules and combine them to save you work. But, you can start with the stock rooted ROM and build your own experience from there too. Check out the hotspot mod, custom kernels, Xposed modules, various themes, and build something that works for you.

so yea I dont really like the touchwiz interface I liked using the stock android theme my last phone had using CM9 so touchwiz isnt really needed
I do need to be able to use widgets though like the ones for apps that show me the prices of gold/silver my bitcoins/litecoins and the mining speed from my miners using the api I have - dont some of the widgets need touchwiz to work, not the touchwiz widgets but the ones that apps create
I have installed roms before so I know its not hard but once you get into this things can get out of control and after a while you find your self having to use odin and then things get scary cuz lets face it who really likes using odin unless something has changed from last year odin is just about the only thing that could really brick your phone if something goes wrong

If you don't like touchwiz, but want the full functionality of you phone features. Why not use a different launcher? There are a lot to choose from.

In my experience, there are Samsung widgets that not only require touchwiz, but also require Samsung's launcher. I use several widgets designed for multiple Android devices, and I don't think they care about touchwiz.

I dont want any of the sprint crap on the phone either no need for sprint news and all that crap
wouldnt just installing a different launcher just be a skin you cant remove touchwiz from what I remember so I need a rom that doesent have touchwiz in it

Yes, you had stressed earlier that you wanted all things working. If you want any of the S features to work on your phone than you need to keep touchwiz as your base rom. Installing a different launcher can give you that. If you like the look of AOSP, there is a new google now launcher that can provide more of an AOSP look. You can remove a lot of the bloat and sprint stuff fairly easily with TiBu or a root file explorer. Just be cautious, removing some of the Sprint stuff will screw up your phone and cause the ability to update PRL or Profile to fail.

yea wanted all things working but I guess after looking at it I dont use much of the "S" features if at all so I will just have to try some out and see whats up
one thing I was wondering about is the "gapps" in the past I had to make sure it was the exact right one for the exact rom I was using but now I dont see much about saying a specific version of gapps for the roms rather just to install gapps and get the latest one - so the gapps that would be for the sprint phone should work for the roms?
I do however like the feature where you wave your hand over the screen when its off and it lights up to show you the time and info, it would suck if that went away but I can deal with it

I would like to know if there are any problems with using the samsung tec tiles, those NFC sticker tags with other roms that wouldnt have any touchwiz stuff
I assume that they are just NFC so they should work but I want to be sure

I havent installed a rom yet been busy - but I did get root
I noticed I have an OTA update waiting, I assume its 4.4 so if I update will I have problems rooting or remove root and make installing roms hard?
