red camera flare - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I got these red camera flares if I take photos in bad light situations. Does everyone have them or am I the only one? Is my camera broken or is it just a poor sensor? Please help me :S if it is broken, can I send it to Google to let them repair it?

Thanks for your help

My Nexus 4 has this too, i guess it has something to do with the low light conditions.
My previous device, the Galaxy S, also had this. Don't think you should be worried about anything.

AW: red camera flare
I also had an galaxy s, but I never saw this effect, even with the badest conditions for a camera

Is this a reason to send it back to Google? Or will they say I am crazy and change nothing?

Pink Tint on Camera

Hi All - had my Note for a couple of weeks now, hardly used the camera but just tried it and there is a pink tint/hue at the centre of the camera view area which shows on taken pics too. Wondering if anyone else is having this issue. I have the international/UK white version of the Note.
Its normal all to do with light note and s2 has issue

Yes Ive seen the problem with the S2, however its really noticeable and it seems that Samsung have not fixed the problem at all. Really quite disappointed with it on such a high end device.
i saw it happen once recently with low light and low screen brightness on one camera app. but didnt happen with other camera apps. dont remember which app though. so try other camera apps to see if it is an app problem. turn up screen brightness and see if issue resolves
this problem is very common (the HTC devices i owned had the same issue) and there is not really a solution to it for now. the reason for this problem is within the optics, it CAN be compensated software-wise, but there is no 100% compensation possible. also this occurs only for specific wavelengths, therefore the light-source is important too!
All due to cheap sensors. The sensor isn't big enough to let sufficient light in so the darkest part (the center) gets the weird pink effect. You won't see too much of this when you're out in a sunny day.
This is just the nature of the game with cellphone sensors.
hmmmm... it seems blue on my phone. not pink at all
mine is green..... :s

mine is a perfect mix of VIBGYOR pattern (white!)
mine is sometimes green.
but its seams to be problem with the AWB (auto white balance) and artificial light sources. If I change my WB to a daylight (or what ever) the pink/green spot is gone. When i switch back to AWB most of the time the pink/green spot is also gone
i would appreciate if you can test this

Camera Center Red Hue Issue...

When I take pictures with my Nexus 4 stock camera I notice a red hue in the center of the image. It shows in the display and in the picture.
Its incredibly annoying. Anyone else having this issue? I also tried using another app LG Camera and it is still there.
Any info would be much appreciated. Searched forums but didn't come up with anything on this issue.

Yeah I see it too. That's the color of the lens. Oh well nothing we can do about that.

+1. Mine doesn't do that at all.
Guys thanks for the input. I was afraid that it might be an issue with my device lens or something because changing Roms from stock to paranoid didn't fix the issue.
Outside I don't notice it... Only on very low light settings. My balance is always set to auto white.

purple!!
I doubt it's a manufacturing issue. it's most likely a lens design problem.
From experience, I'm going to say this is normal. Had it on my Touch Pro 2, my HD2, my G2 and now my Nexus 4. Only noticeable in scenes with low light.

I never saw this on my OG ego, photon, or s3.
And until this thread I hadn't seen it on my n4. But since reading this thread I have noticed it on my low light photos
Actually, this is starting to look like lens flare. All but the OP's shots look to have a bright light source in front of the lens, out of frame.

In my opinion its definitely not lens flare. I've never experienced lens flare in the dark only. Also the pictures of the guys carpet and cat seem to also be in very low light with the same result so I'm not the only one experiencing this in very low lighting. Also my outdoor picture doesn't seem to produce it in the street shot where it would have been more likely to show lens flare (although that could mean it's still there but much less visible.)
I'm starting to think that more people are effected by this and just don't even realize it. I'm personally leaning towards the concept someone here already mentioned that this is a biproduct of the lens in low light.
For those of you not experiencing this issue please post your pictures of indoor shots with low light equivalent scenerio. Perhaps only some are effected by it or maybe you're just not noticing it. Like others have mentioned here... After reading this post that hue in the center became noticeable.
I hope it's an isolated issue but I'm starting to think it isn't.
Thanks again for all the feedback. I am very much into photography so it might take a fine eye to distinguish. Also if you decide to show a pic off try to use a lighter background so we can see the red/purple as some darker subject matter may mask it.
Good luck and I hope you don't share the same experience that we are having.

I am also seeing this in low light. To me this looks as if this is sadly normal. If not then a whole lotta fun trying to exchange for one that doesn't exhibit it.

You should call google and ask because on mine, never happens even in low light. Its most likely hardware flaw on your lens and google would let you RMA for it.
---------- Post added at 10:02 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:01 PM ----------
Also there is "post your pictures taken by nexus 4' thread in general on first pagw and no one there seems to have the problem
I get this in lower light too, and it happened on my SGS3 and SGS2 as well so i'd say it's normal. In night shots and daytime it isn't visible.
Yepp I definitely get it too. Also doesn't focus correctly at times, like my gnex did.
Anyways here are 2 pics I just took. My living room had no lighting (beside coming from kitchen), my daughter is right under a light and I can't see the red hue there.

What happens if you take that same shot of your living room with the TV off?

Good question. Ill try again tonight when it's dark out (got huge windows in living room) with the same shot in different lighting scenarios.
Regarding those comparative shots in different lighting conditions...
I just did exactly that, taking a picture of my desk, very similar lighting conditions.
All settings Auto, Exposure 1/30 s: red center
All settings Auto, Exposure 1/40 s: no red center
Video preview shows the same issue when I point the camera similarly.
This is not a hardware issue (at least not in terms of the lenses or CMOS), it looks more like there's something wrong during picture processing. It might be a problem with the ISP, although I'm pretty baffled to see this happening for such a long time (it was already an issue on the HTC HD2 which was released in late 2009). If it's an ISP issue, I guess we're out of luck.

Green spot in the photos

Just found some of the photos in my Nexus 4 have green spots on in ( mostly with white background)
My phone is still under warranty do you think I should call them and repair?
How long does it take?
Thanks
Try cleaning the lens.

You can try to convince them, they probably won't and make you pay for a camera module replacement. Sometimes its a bad sensor that have those blotches, usually pink.
samsung s2 had this with whites, they called it pink spots samsung never fixed it, send it in and find out.
could be the module, it depends if you had this from the start.

You have to watch on it in the night or where is totally dark. And if you zoom in this photo/screen shot you can see that middle part is totally dark and edges are more light.
And yes I removed lens protection sticker

I played a little bit with Photoshop with your black picture. I think it is totally normal that you cannot get a real 100% black picture out of a cam. A dark room is not 100% black for your cam. Maybe for your eyes. And even if you would make a photo of an ideal 100% black room in the end you would make a photo of your cameras chip noise. But the picture for me looks more like a litte rest of light the camera could fetch.

Ok looks like you make my pic way easy to see for everyone but you can check if is same at yours s5 ?
I just need to know if every s5 have a same issue because my nexus5 in same room same time have no this issue !!
I tried to make a black picture. it looks similar to yours but it is nearly black (more than yours). I pressed my black soft S5 bag on the camera lens.
So I still think its not an issue but it shows that the S5 camera is much more sensitiv to distinguish between black and nearly black than other cameras that recognize 100% black where the S5 recognizes 98% black. No issue for me.
I would like to say that samsung galaxy s4 have no this issue so I go to change my s5 for new.... again.... what for full of problems phone... really disappointed. ... photo is prove
From which camera was the last picture you posted? Its not 100% black like all the others.

So the S4 has the same issue what is no issue for me
What you are looking for is a theoretical ideal camera that makes a 100% black picture of a 100% black original. You won't find such a camera anywhere.

My G2's Camera Sucks under Light.

Hello, I have this problem for a while. My phone is taking really bad pictures under fluorescent light (see the 1st pic). To solve this I have applied "tootpaste solution" which removed the AF filter from camera lens, because pictures were all blurry and brighter but it did not help. However the only solution is to covr the head of my phone like a cap. (see the 2nd pic)
Now the question is whether I have to change my rear camera or lens protector to solve this. Thanks for your answers.
Phone is full stock?
did you try to change the white balance in the camera app for taking pictures under flourescent light?
