Getting so excited about this phone. I got a chance to hold one at the weekend and it was stunning. It's great to get some insight into the design. It really feels like HTC have gone all out with this device. The idea of having the antennas as part of the body is really clever.

Looks like their cross licensing agreement with apple is paying off. They've basically made the iPhone 5 most of us wanted last year.

i just did a screen comparison of my n1 next to my managers new iphone for, on identical pictures the color on the n1 is LEAPS and BOUNDS above the iphone. I will admit that the pixel density on the iphones screen is really really good, but the color reproduction? totally washed out.
AMOLED displays have amazzzzzzing color and contrast, u would think a multimedia focused device, such as an iphone would have taken that into consideration.

To be completely fair, the antenna issue is probably what caused his calls to drop. They shouldn't have been two separate categories.

That's what I did. I sold my 3gs to get the n1 for att day one. And now I bought the 4 on the 29th and sold it a week later. I was worried that there are cool phones coming to att this summer and I already used my upgrade. But looking at reports I don't see anything coming up.
My n1 does everything I need and would want. And I got a nice pocket change for the iPhone 4. And the cool thing is that my wait time was only 2 hours.

I'm sure they did consider OLED for the iPhone, but there's no way anyone could meet the supply demands. Samsung can't make them fast enough.
Jesus guys, lay off already. iPhone 4 is an amazing piece of hardware, but Android phones are released every other week, and the hardware is bound to catch up and surpass apple's. The article's author clearly has a defective iPhone, writing about it as if it had any kind of relation to all iPhones is at the very least misleading.
We all know where this is heading. The world is moving towards Open, and eventually Jobs will kill iOS with all his crazy "save people from porn" shenanigans. We don't need to act as if they were religions. It's just a fact, with Google backing it, Android will eventually win out.
All iPhones 4's are defective with their external antenna design.
The actual hardware is sweet. Unfortunately the software is all chained up and limited.

Schmidt: Nexus One so successful we dont need a Nexus Two

Eric Schmidt's words concerning why the Nexus One was created and how we dont need number Two.
Initially, Google felt that they needed to build a device to help Android along so they worked with HTC to create the Nexus One handset. Schmidt says: “The idea a year and a half ago was to do the Nexus One to try to move the phone platform hardware business forward. It clearly did. It was so successful, we didn't have to do a second one. We would view that as positive but people criticised us heavily for that. I called up the board and said: 'Ok, it worked. Congratulations - we're stopping'. We like that flexibility, we think that flexibility is characteristic of nimbleness at our scale."

What about a 1280x720 4" IPS screen, sub-10mm thickness, aluminum/carbon fiber construction, HDMI port, front-facing camera, Tegra 2 SoC, battery life that is amazing, and capacitive touch buttons that are actually silk screened right?
And of course, a unicorn detector
oh well, there's the answer to that. now we all just wait for the next developer phone, whoever google decides to use. let's hope HTC again or maybe motorola.

+1 on this. SE really dropped the ball when they attacked the smartphone market. The W series phones were cutting edge in terms of being music centric. The K series were really good too, my K750i has the best 2 megapixel sensor of any camera. The K850i was a real stormer of a phone too.
I don't know what happened in SE HQ when they moved onto touchscreen phones and the like. They were ahead of the curve back in the day but maybe their UI let them down?
Samsung are another company who made good hardware but ****ed it up with their clunky software.
I'm not sure how these guys turn the ship around but HTC came from nowhere and are one of the biggest mobile phone manufacturers about now. Surely SE and Samsung can make a cracking phone again and win some of the market share back.
Another issue might be locking down access to root or bastardising Android with a clunky shell. HTC avoided that with a pretty nice UI in Sense.

The Nexus One was never supposed to outsell any other phone or become an income source for Google. It was meant to drive the Android OS and the hardware platform and as Schmitty says, it "clearly worked".
Android market share has rocketed and continues to do so and even today, 7 months later from intro, new Android phones are STILL catching up to the specs of the Nexus One.

I don't know about you, but that's what I dislike about SE. Why couldn't they just combine the best walkman and camera in one phone? Instead, they made two phones out of almost the same hardware and charge a high price for each of them...

Since android's beginning, there has always been Google's developer phone, the one that Google uses to write the android OS on. First was the g1, now its nexus. It will always be a vanilla android version, not HTC sense or MOTOblur or whatever. Perhaps the next one will be sold thru a carrier, but I think they will ensure it can be purchased unlocked too. We don't know, this is new territory, and The nexus kinda set the standard. So I'm anticipating Google will make sure the next phone can be had without the carrier influence as well.
I actually don't think there should be a Nexus 2 from Google. They should just stick to what they do best and make great software. I don't think selling physical products is their thing and the Nexus One has served it's purpose of demonstrating the potential of Android.
Hopefully the plan is to dramatically improve the UI with Gingerbread and convince manufacturers like HTC and Motorola to run vanilla Android. They can release new versions of Android and leave it up to the manufacturers to deliver the updates.
I'm done with SE, myself. I followed them for a little while with a P990i, then Xperia X1 and was going to get an X10... but glad I got a Nexus One instead.
High-priced pieces of trash, they are. I know the X1 was HTC built and rebranded, but WinMo was so laggy on it and SE slapped an $800 price tag on it. Enough to wake you up.
So there won't be a N1 successor ??

Sure is nice having Google dictate what goes on the phone and not T-Mobile or AT&T or whoever. I think I'd opt for a slightly weaker phone over one with Sense UI and branding all over it.
I guess I'll be buying whichever dev phone is popular at the time, or making damn sure the phone has Cyanogen et al behind it and that it is vanilla.
No N2?!? Oh come on! It's not like they have to do much. Just make it a 4" screen, swap in a better 3D co-processor, slap a real keyboard on it and call it a day. I'd buy that off-contract any day!
I would agree that the N1 put android on the map, at the centre. They have multiple partners now SPAMMING rediculously good phones for android, the consumers know about it and WANT it, theyve done their task. Let them get back to making the OS orgasmic, and let HTC etc make phones that can vibrate
Like a guy said eariler this is whats called damage control. The N1 didn't start anything with Android OS, it was the Droid that did that. The N1 is a tiny blip on the radar of Android sales. The N1 failed and this is an arrogant look at the N1. The fact of the matter is HTC was planning 1ghz phones regardless of the N1 existance or not, remeber that phone list that was leaked last year of all the phones coming out this year? I love my N1 but lets face it google dropped the ball on it.
1. restrictions on the subdizing
2. restrictions on the type of plan
3. No dummy phones for TMO stores
IMO if they would have stuck the N1 in stores made it easy like Droid, Samsung Vibrant, and EVO, then N1 at the time would have been a mega hit. It was the first phone (that I can remember) with a ghz processor ppl would have went nuts for it because of the speed and its a really sexy looking phone.

I think MOST of the hate towards Samsung is that they're slow to update software, followed by buggy OS releases, and finally the plastic construction.
I personally think they're making the best hardware out there right now, with some compelling products, as long as you can someone else (like Google or the dev community here) to make the software "right."

I actually prefer the plastic construction. Using a metal touch-screen phone when the temperature is below freezing is not comfortable.
Also, what would happen if I dropped the phone? The Samsung frame and exterior parts would break, but by doing so less shock would be transmitted to the expensive parts inside. Which is how a motorcycle helmet works.
The worst thing about Samsung is the software. My I5700 will never be "right". A few dozen OS updates have been made, but nobody knows why, because none of the big bugs were ever fixed. Good hardware, lousy software.
I think it would be fair to say that 2010 was the year for Samsung, and judging by CES, 2011 will be the year for Motorola. And as far as the Verizon iphone goes, if what I heard is true (which would be a dumb move on Apple's part) and the iphone 4 will be coming out in the next month or so, Apple better have figured out their antena issue or there will be some very unhappy Verizon customers out there.

Not sure I agree that 2011 will the year of Motorola.
Samsung's announced (and released already) some compelling products for 2011. It's not just ALL about CPU speed or # of cores.
Granted it's a matter of preference, but in my opinion, no one's come close to Samsung's SAMOLED screens yet (iPhone 4's close, but not there), and SAMOLED Plus screens should be even better. With LTE phones and some really smart tablet designs, Samsung certainly going to be competitive.
Personally, I don't see myself with anything that's not SAMOLED or better...display size and appearance is most important to me these days, as long as the CPU/GPU are fast enough for my apps. So far 1ghz single core is there. Dual core not interesting until there's a killer app I need that requires it. Maybe in 20102...?

Who knows, Samsung might end up being on the top again this year depending on what announces they have at Mobile World Conference. I doubt Motorola has anything else up their sleeves if they are attending that conference after seeing what they announced at CES.
True, I tell everyone that samsung makes the best hardware in the mobile market. When I bought my Captivate, one of my iphone friends was sorely tempted to switch to the Captivate. So, software issues aside, Samsung hardware is the best out there at the moment. But the Atrix looks like it's going to be a serious piece of hardware.

You don't think that the iPhone being released on America's 2nd biggest carrier will affect competition? Well here's a humbling fact:
Nobody who posts on XDA affects smartphone sales. We are a negligible fraction of smartphone users. You know who use smartphones, especially iPhones? Every teenager in America. Every college student in America. Mothers. Fathers. Grandparents. Everyone outside the small walls of XDA.
All of those people will perk up when then iPhone is released on Verizon. And the added competition will, necessarily, drive innovation for Android. That's a Good Thing.
You may not consider the iPhone as anything comparable to Android, and of course myself and everyone else who has the will to create an XDA account would agree, but the rest of the world does. And they're the ones that drive innovation, not us.

Now what does he mean by better phones?
- Better Hardware? I highly doubt it, like I said previously; iOS is only one phone and releases every one or two years (Whatever it is) whereas Android releases one every other week. iPhone may beat the competition and have that "king" for a couple of months, but it is just a matter of time until something else takes over. iOS is only one phone, Android is attacking iOS from all angles (Motorola, Samsung, LG, HTC, and more).
- Better Firmware with newer updates? This may be on Apple's side due to Android's fragmentation but that is mainly due to manufacturers and the carriers. But since this is the Nexus forum, we're pretty much guaranteed to have the newest and latest Android version.
How exactly is this competition? There's a saying that says, "quality over quantity." Just because Lady Gaga is getting more sales than another artist doesn't mean that she's a better artist. Or another example is, just because more people use Windows.. does it necessarily mean that its a better OS than Linux? No. It just means that it is more "mainstream," it necessarily doesn't mean its better. For as I care, I can really care less about the numbers that iOS is selling compared to Android. This is pretty much Mac vs. Windows revisited but on a more portable battlefield.
And I highly doubt that Verizon would stop marketing the "Droid" just because they have the iPhone. Droid has been a highly successful marketing term for them.

Stereotypical much? That's like saying every teenager in the U.S. has a iPod. Yeah the majority has one but does it mean every single one of them have a iPod? No.
And XDA has a iPhone section, just saying.
Also.... as another backup statement, since iPhone is not exclusive to ONE carrier in Europe.. they have multiple carriers (Vodafone, T-Mobile UK, etc)... take a look at their perspective. Take a look at who's striving there, Android or iOS?

How not to be a real reporter... Gizmodo Dell Streak 7 shaft review

After reading this "article" i have lost all interest in Gizmodo for good. I take more care pooping in a toilet then this rush job they call reporting.
The device looks pretty good.. but not sure what value i could have with it when i have my Streak 5.
Who cares..I am coming from a 3GS and I got sick of this control freak whose name's Steve Jobs.
Apple products are very good, fast, polished and very pricey....it is going to take a while for the iPhone users to get their devices jailbroken and unlocked. It is all about rumors when it comes to that, and lots cat and mouse...Apple keeps releasing new updates and the hackers keep trying to jailbreak with no much success in the last few weeks.
I got tired of a very stable system which does not allow you to download any file unless you purchase a downloader and if you download with it you can't move the files around, they have to stay with such app,you can't install any non-crapple store apps.If you want an unlocked iPhone 4 you might want to sell your car too.
Once again the rumors regarding jailbreak/unlock.....you can see all this online too.
I would much rather have more control of my devices, that's why I pay for them.
Wow way to fuel the apple fanboy retards who are continuously lyeing to themselves everyday believing that just because something has an apple logo on it, its better.
I really dislike gizmodo.
Jobs could slap an apple logo onto a piece of sh$t and you know that they would all happily pay almost $800 for it.
The streak 7 is honestly a solid android tablet. It may not be the "best", but atleast its not another $150 big POS that you can buy at walgreens. Lol.
IMO dell gave it a good shot and they should be proud of have made.
Any publicity is good publicity right.

I agree - not a good thing. With a ton of tablets coming down the pike, as much as I like my 5" Streak, I can't imagine that the 7" Streak will be that compelling given that screen.
So, what's wrong with the article. I think it's spot-on.
I think the article was well written and bang on point. The Streak 7 was a lazy effort and barely worth releasing.
This has nothing to do with apple.
The Streak 7 is lazy. I would say his points are all well taken.

Hate on Apple all you want, I do and I've had Android devices since January 2008. Bottom line, the iPad is a far better functioning device than any Android tablet currently available. I really think that Honeycomb and the Motorola Xoom will shift things in Android's favour though
I personally think that gizmodo's review is far to brief... see Engadget's review for a much more in depth look at the device. engadget.com/2011/01/31/dell-streak-7-review

Agreed. I thought the article was thrown togiether in 5 minutes and the video was done in 30 seconds... I don't care if the device sucks... but if your supposed to be reporting on gadgets that will influence people.. you should take the time to go over the pros and cons...
and recommending the galaxy tab really put it over the top. Like you will ever see an update on that device now that the tab 2 has been announced. Most people won't get burned again by samsung after the galaxy s fiasco.

Exactly, the person who made the decision seems to be completely having no sense. Why would I buy a 7" tablet if it has the same resolution as 5" Streak,
which is more portable, and light weight. This product is like a formality for the
7" inch tablet. Dell should just keep 5" inch size, and cut another $50 to get more sales(with new CPU and 4G chip).
g4 reviewed it and gave it 5 of 5 stars

Read the rest of the thread or don't bother bro
The review you posted was for the 5" Streak, this thread is discussing the 7" Streak.
The problem with the Gizmodo review, is that its not an actual review. They're using a $450 tablet as canon fodder saying its **** n all, but its only selling for $450 (outright)!
If it was priced sans $750 (outright) onwards like the Xoom and LG tablets are going to be priced, then fine, rip its ass out and fcuk it over.
Dell made it cheap (mind you, its just the screen thats rubbish) and is selling it cheap. There are far worse tablets out there right now around the same price, but with half the goodies of the Streak 7 - So sue Dell if they went for the low end of the scale... Take it or leave it - thats the bottom line...
Ive found most websites for example gizmodo, T3, engadget etc favour Apple products, its something ive come to live with. Softpedia is pretty good.
And another thing, everyone always compares mobile devices to iphones/ipads. A friend recently posted on facebook about the motorola xoom and another person commented 'is it an ipad killer tho'. I was like, why would anything need to kill the ipad?
It really grinds my gears.

Hate on Apple all you want but the iPhone and iPad are both excellent devices.
They have, in the past, favoured Apple because most of their products until very recently have had far better out of the box functionality and let's face it, that's what the vast majority of users want. Until recent times of Froyo and Snapdragons I longed to have my phone be as responsive, and have as fast a browser as the iPhone. The Dream and the iPhone 3G came out around the same time in Aus. My Dream, although I loved Android, was amazingly slow next to the iPhone. Furthermore, reviewers are STILL comparing Android phones to the iPhone and even though it has far inferior hardware, it STILL stacks up. How do you think an out of the box Dream would compare to the Desire? If a reviewer compared the two you would say, "yes the Desire is better, but the Dream is older hardware with older software!" Both of these limitations apply equally to the iPhone, yet for many it was the yardstick for the Desire when it was released.
I've never owned an iPhone, only played with mates, and I've owned Android phones since the Dream. I personally think that the iOS user experience is too limiting for me, that's not to say it's bad. I know some people who have as HTC Desire and have never customised the home screens in any way.

This has been another edition of my $0.02
those websites are in the business of page views. And nothing gets page views like apple does.
Like it or not(i usually dont) people want to know how products stack up against their apple equivalent. Apple has had great products.

And without owning any of them and using them for a good 2-3 months, how can you justify yourself?
I own both devices, and after the "honeymoon" period of about a month, they're now sitting in my cupboard and about to hit ebay...
I think if you've never owned an Apple product, but get to use a friends for a few minutes, you do love them. But day in, day out, using Apple devices just makes you dumb, and they get boring very quickly with so many restrictions. To keep it interesting you have to continue to buy more apps because the free ones are just rubbish, or worst case, jailbreak to get the features you really want. But, this is rutt that Apple wants you to get into. Get bored, spend more $$. The iPhone & iPad line is all about the revenue, not about the user experience.
To be honest, I've owned every version of the iPhone since its inception in 2007, and its been the same **** but in a different body since then. There have been no Major leaps in software or tech, and the iPhone has almost always been behind in core features (eg, camera, 3G, etc) when you look at their competitors (except maybe for capacitive screens).
I will admit, where Apple products shine is in the looks. Their devices are top notch build (except for the 3G and 3GS plastic case cracks and yellow LCD screens) - but they look very nice, and feel good in the hand.
Its just a pitty that the rest is just rubbish though.
I'm so thankful for Google and Android. Theres loads of choice. And now the Hardware war is about to begin - the first time Apple will be a spectator watching dual core handsets and brilliant tablets bring fluid gaming and a brilliant user experience to all of us.
Theres my $0.02.

Nokia on android = EPIC

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/08/nokia-ceo-stephen-elop-rallies-troops-in-brutally-honest-burnin/
so it appears that Nokia is no longer staying idle as their company loses huge margins in the cell phone arena. According to the above article there is a chance that they might join the android team!
IMO that would be awesome. Nokia "still imo" the best phone manufacturer out there. Faaaar superior to Motorola, HTC and Samsung combined. Their phones are always aesthetically pleasing and much more thought out than the *cough* dual screen phones coming.
While Motorola, Htc and samsung are decent phone manufacturers, I think if Nokia jumped ship then android would really be an unstoppable force.
EDIT
WE LOSE ):
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/exclusive-nokias-windows-phone-7-concept-revealed/
that is one sexy ass looking phone!
It could also be wp7 though. I believe one of their technology officers used to be a high up at microsoft before he went to work at nokia.

yeah I know... That would give wp7 a lot of leverage in the game since they came in late... I'm still hoping the at least get into the high end android game. I just love their phones soooo much. They do everything right except for the software.
Their 8mp cameras from 2 years ago are far superior to our 8 and 5mp's today...
If they do go android, even with part of their lineup, it would definitely push android over the top in os distribution! So that is who I am rooting for Don't they have some sort of shareholder conference or something this week?
I'd buy day one...best cameras, though their phones have been kind of ugly recently.

I'm not sure about that, but I know that the article I posted says that they will be talking about their new game plan February 11th. I'm assuming by then we may get a hint as if they will try and catalyze their own OS or jump on board with android/wp7...
The most recent nokia phone that I got to play with was the N8 and holy cow was that phone amazing. It was by far the most solid feeling phone that I ever held and the touch screen was superb. The software itself wasn't too shabby neither....
I really think that Nokia can utilize android to its fullest potential. The extent at which they polish their devices is remarkable.
a dual core nokia phone would be my dream come true.
I use to like nokia (minus the garbage battery locks), then they had to shut down all their factories in the us and move to china.
Screw them.

they were great... over 10yrs ago...
but...
W7 needs help to get a jump start
nokia needs a huge savior...
looks like ...
microsoft will love to get an experienced mgfr to back them.
Nokia needs a new OS to plan thier future on...
both will most likely do anything to get love for the other....
match made in heaven!
but if they do get android.. that would be so great!!!
And they chose microsoft, go figure. lol
