Ok, so the usb port on my Nook Color finally broke making it impossible to charge anymore.
I have found a place selling replacement motherboards for $70, looks to be a simple swap.
Is it worth trying to fix it / replace board?
Thanks

Not when you can find refurbished devices for not much more. I got one for $59 from B&N, but that was a special Thanksgiving promotion. Shop around.

! FACEPALM !
well I took my son's trusty NC in to a tech repair shop on the off chance the tech could solder the usb port back on...Long Story Short... as I picked the wall charger and cable up off my passenger seat the plug on the cable FELL APART!
Cable failure NOT NC port failure! Doh!
My son's a happy camper again
I'm used to seeing cables fall apart. I'm probably on my fourth cable now.
As for fixing the mobo? I'd spend the money on a Nexus 7, or some other tablet, rather than going the Nook Color/Tablet route, or getting my Nook Color (1st Gen) fixed when/if it goes.
At the time I bought it, there were really no tablet options worth speaking about, except for the 1st Gen. iPad, and I wan't about to spend that kind of coin.
Good luck whatever you choose!

Hello everybody. Recently, I had my phone go under a repair which involved opening up the entire phone just to replaces the mini usb port, which was detached from the phone and was trapped inside, losing its ability to charge.
Now, another problem has arisen. The phone has problems charging with wires compatible with its port. When I connect to it to charge via usb, it was plug-n-go, all good. For some unknown reason, it suddenly came under the issue that I need to shift the usb up,down, left, right, and slightly bend it the inside. Now, the original charger doesn't work because it broke, leaving the usb charger as the only option. I can't understand why my HTC Wizard is having this problem, and it's very frustrating. I paid sixty dollars for the repair on the USB, and it seems it hasn't done anything except reattatch it. Any suggestions?
Hey Infinity M,
By your description, it looks like the soldering is a bit loose, thus you have to shift the USB.
Have you tried with different chargers and cables?
If you wish (at your own risk), get a thin screwdriver or something like one, then apply a small force to all directions at the border of the Wizard's USB. Watch if it moves with any pressure, as that will indicate a loose solder.
Good luck, man!

Thank you for your sufficient reply. I have not tried a different cable, and I have checked the Wizard's USB. I'll have to try another cable to check if it works. Do you know where I can buy a charger for a cheap price. Thanks!
Edit: Heh, I realized you're the same person making that HTC Obsidian Case, I'd love to pay you for it lol.

That's a hard one. I would send you straight away to eBay, lol, but I guess you can take a look at some local stores near you. It doesn't need necessarily to be a Wizard's charger. In fact, any charger for a HTC device that uses the same battery will do (the Tytn's I guess). Or you can check the charger label and see if it meets these requirements:
INPUT: 100-240V~0.2A
OUTPUT: 5V, 1A (this one being the most important of all)

Dude, I'm almost conving myself to make more than one, lol!
Again, good luck man!
So I usually sleep with my phone right beside my pillow (super nerd I know), and my bed is pretty high off the ground. The other night, when I woke up, I dropped the phone off my bed while it was still plugged in and now the cable's connection to the phone is not very stable.
I was able to straighten it out a little so that I won't have to hold the cable constantly to charge the phone. However, I think that the connection is too loose for me to simply disregard in my daily uses.
Is there any way I can fix this problem myself or have it repaired without sending the phone to T-mobile? i don't want to deal with the hassle of un-rooting my device and all that bs.
Any help is great, Thanks
That happend to me and I just bought a new usb cable....I thought it was the port the whole time and its was the cable that got damaged even though it looks undamaged....I say go to walmart and plug one of the universal micro usb chargers and see if it holds better that way you confirm if its the phone or cable
This sentence has been slaughtered by swype.......
lol it wasn't THAT bad
Same here. Almost exactly the same except I pushed mine off of the soldering station I was working on.
It is NOT the port on the phone that got damaged, I can BET you on this. It's the cable. Buy 1 or 2 new cables from Amazon and you'll be good as new. I promise. Lol.
Here: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Repla...UOQI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294247657&sr=8-1
Roughly $3.50 per cable with the shipping included. They are Samsung originals too. Note that they MAY be shorter than the cable you just broke.
Happy shopping.
hi
my son has wrecked my charger port and it will not charge my nexus
i would rma it but I've flashed a custom rom
any advice is grateful
google?
tried just came up with problems nothing about selling them.
if i remember correctly the easiest way would be to replace the entire micro usb board in your 7... assuming there's not too many retailers for nexus 7 tablet parts you would be better off buying a broken one off of ebay and swapping out.. OR depending on the severity of how bad it's broken strip apart one of your old devices you'll probably never use anymore & make friends with a soldering gun / iron

i was hoping it would be a quick swap over like my sgs2
its a separate pcb connected to the main board via a ribbon cable.
I've not looked into swapping it just need to see it i can source the part first.
might have to un solder the part and like you say take it off a old phone or something. problem is im not the best at soldering ha
I'm looking for advice. the USB port on my defy seems loose and only charges if plugged in a certain way. ive physically opened my phone and inspected everything but i cant visually notice anything, and the brace holding the port down is solid. has anyone had and fixed a problem like this? if so could you give me some tips on what to do or where to further look to repair the port. thank you in advance

i have the same problem and has been living with it for the last 1 yr or so! don't know if it was the usb port or the cable's fault but don't have another cable to try
one word of advise though. don't try flashing any sbf or you might end in trouble with an incomplete flash......

thanks for the link. keeping it just incase i decided to do it too. i've already bought a couple of cheap/fake batteries and a desktop charger.
46c each!!!??? that's cheap enough, except the postage/freight is going to be much more
good luck and let us know the outcome.
Just in case either of you were wondering, I have not received the USB ports just yet. I will be posting a successful repair one way or another!
crashed and burned. destroyed the PCB where the USB ports are soldered... theyre just too small to be re-soldered by human hands. only way to charge my defy at this point is by macgyver some cut USB cables onto the battery terminals..
i'm sorry to hear that! you could alway buy a second battery and a desktop charger to get around your problem like what i did. they both can be bought from ebay for a few dollars each, like:

Hi All, I have the hd 8 , bought it August last year for my kiddo, today tab is not charging, looked at the port and i can definitely see something bad happened, like kiddo pushed the cable other way round, anyone did replace their ports? Is it soldered on the main board? Would it be hard?

Hi I've not personally replaced a micro usb port on the kindle fire but I have done on other devices before. You would need a hot air station to remove then re-solder a new port onto the board.
If you take it to a computer /phone repair shop I'm sure they would do it for you
usb port is very weak on those kindle fire devices. partially broke off on 7 and completely broke off on 8. it actually broke off from the bracket which is suppose to hold the port itself to the board and of course those 5 pins did not live long after that. basically get a magnifying glass, very thin soldering tip and search youtube for HD8 disassembly. the fix seems to be easy, actual soldering - not really )
