Broken phone - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dropped my phone this week, and even though I have a flip case it landed open and face down (sods law), resulting in the screen being smashed and completely unresponsive.
Kind of hoping that the insurer can repair it. Not a big deal as 99% of data on the phone is held in the cloud. The big annoyance for me is if I have to get a new phone I have to start all of my games again from the start. I wish Google would fix this where all app data is genuinely backed up to the cloud, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to do this.
Without rooting are there any apps out there that can do this? Think I know the answer already but just thought I would put it out here.
In the mean time I'm rocking a Nokia 1650

You need it rooted to gain access to the root partition of the phone, where all the app data is stored. I do not think you can backup any app data without root. You could unlock the bootloader and root it, backup the app data you need, then un-root and re-lock the loader if you're that much against rooting it.

Root makes life so much easier and pleasant mate

You can read data without root, I think?

I think you can use carbon back up by koush without being rooted. It basically does an adb backup which you can do with out being rooted

Will give carbon a look when I get my nexus 4 back.

and buy shut down you mean physically power off? or the screen turn off?
Cuz if its just the screen that is normal, its the proximity sensor

Its weird, I haven't had this problem on any other android phone, its happened twice in the last 24 hours. I'm completely stock. Unrooted
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I can count on one hand the number of phone calls I've been on since I got the thing, but I haven't had it shut down on me any of those times.
I've had it happen every time when rooted and had apps. I went back to no apps and still had it happen. I went back to stock 2.3.1 via the nandroid around here and locked it back up, still doing it.
The only thing I didn't test was 2.3 vs 2.3.1 but I do believe it started happening to me, at least, when going to 2.3.1, now that I think about it.
I have this problem but rarely. It will reboot the phone show the nexus startup screen without the backlit LED. Is that whats happening to you?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Same here, and I have used every T-Mobile Android phone to date, never seen anything like this before! This is the only phone I haven't rooted yet, not sure what the issue is...
It only happened once so I didn't think anything of it.
I didn't know it was a common problem.
Btw I will be exchanging my phone cuz this one has done really annoying bugs, like freezing in between homescreen slides and apps constantly fc during use
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
ya i havent made very many calls, but thats why it kind of concerns me. i have probablly made 10 calls and i think its rebooted 3-4 times while on the call or at the end of the call. i wonder if its a bug with the phone app?
did you root the phone or something ? if its still on stock firmware like how you bought it, then try to restore factory sittings, if its still doing that you then you have a I/O chip problem. and you will need to replace your phone.
thats what the HTC care told me when my HD2 used to have this issue

I would believe it was hardware if it happened randomly, but for phone calls only, that sounds like software.

Happened to me just now. Stock 2.3.1 with an international call.
I'm not rooted, I just cleared data for the dialer app and cleared cache on the whole system, we'll see if that does anything. Good thing I rarely use my phone for making calls or I'd be pissed

nexus s vibrate

hey folks, just noticed my nexus won't vibrate at all. tried messaging settings and all options are checked. I've tried as much as possible to get this to vibrate with no luck. think it's toast?
does it give you the little bumb right when you turn it on?
take the battery out put it back in then hold the power button. it should give a vibrate then. if not, then yea you need a new vibrator.

thanks for the reply guys. Did a battery pull and still no luck. This is my wife's phone so its not rooted, and with all the games she plays I'll never hear stop hearing about the loss of progress. Installed a few different keyboards to see even if the haptic would fire up, no luck. She said it worked a few weeks ago, but noticed recently that it's gone. I went through ever setting I can find to try to test and and still not a shake.
Sounds like ur gonna have to use ur factory warranty.

thats what I was thinking...ok my device is rooted so I can use titanium. Her device isn't. Is there any way to pull her game saves off the device without a root? If the nexus had oneclick root/unroot I'd rip that off no problem. The two rooting methods are quite different, and especially with this going back don't want anything to void the warranty.
Yea bro, sounds like your wife wore out her vibrator. You can root without unlocking the bootloader iirc then use titanium then unroot. Copy the backup to your PC then swap phones

you should be able to do a
Code:
adb pull /data/ /data/
and
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcard/
that will copy her data partition where the games are and the sdcard partition to a folder wherever you ran the command. i haven't tried this but without root there isn't much you can mess up
adb is new to me. this unrooted crap annoys me, compared to using my cap. So firing up cmd, running those two commands with the device in (recovery menu?), should pull the data files? now when I get a new phone back, I will be rooting hers, would I drop the data files back in?

Yea pretty much. It doesn't have to be in recovery but if you are make sure to mount the partitions.

I actually have this problem. It happened in the first month I got the phone. Someone on the forums recommended that I do a factory reset. But because I didn't root and I don't want to reinstall everything, so I just use the nexus s without vibration. The vibrate will fix itself once a month for a couple days and then die again so I dunno what it is. Please let me know how you fix it. Thanks!

Bricked Nexus S. Help most appreciated.

Hi all,
I have a Nexus S as some of you will see me around these forums, and love it.
My mother has a Nexus S as well, until she dropped in the bathroom sink whilst washing her hands and since then it hasn't booted.
The strange thing is that the bootloader boots fine, and I have been able to unlock the bootloader and flash clockwork no problem from my PC, no error messages no nothing.
However, I can't boot into recovery, I try to from the bootloader but it just sticks on the Google logo indefinitely.
Is this perhaps something to do with the fact that my mum never had her phone (running stock GB) rooted, and I went and unlocked the bootloader and have no ROM to boot. After the phone dried out it wouldn't boot into gingerbread.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I'm stumped here, I have no problems with my nexus and have done my research alright.
Yours,
Toyface

I had always thought that the phone was basically, you know, a wreck. But the fact that it'd boot to the bootloader always had me intrigued.
I'm trying heimdall atm, but I'm getting bored with my failures ha ha.
it is more like internal ROM or/and SDcard damaged to me, i think that's why you stuck on google logo because system can't read ROM and SDcard so there is nothing nor files or boot.img it can boot up on ...
Just an idea, try
fastboot flash boot (clockworkmod.img)
then try booting it. Should boot up into recovery when you turn it on without going to the bootloader.

Tried this too, (thanks for the tip) to no avail. I think it's dead as the dodo. When I tried Heimdall with a stock image it failed on 65% each and every time, so it seems pretty likely that there's a bad sector somewhere on there.
Either way, I can still carry on teasing my mother that her iPhone 3G she has to use now is woefully inferior to our Google superphones
Any time you drop anything electrical in the water immediately remove the battery (unless the battery isn't removable) and stick it in a large bowl of rice for a day or two. It will pull all the water from every orifice. trust me, I've recovered 4 different smart phones and 3 ipods this way. If you drop something as such in the water and start trying to turn it on the electrical components practically boil the water inside and fry everything.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Ha ha if only my mother was tech inclined. I put in it rice as soon as I got home, but hours had passed. I revived a friends iPhone 4 from certain death. I had fun trying to bring this one back from the brink.
Now my family don't laugh at my obsessive cleanliness and safety with my gadgets

I dont think it has to do with Software. Something is messed up with the hardware.

Left my Note 2 in a taxi, bye bye $700

I don't normally screw up but a few days ago I did it big time. Long story short, I left my Note 2 in a taxi and I have no ability of getting a hold of the driver since I cannot recollect what company I used or what his licence plate was (you guessed it, I was intoxicated).
I did have Samsung Remote Controls installed on my phone but unfortunately I wasn't online when I left it. I had both wifi and data turned off. I also had a screen lock so the would-be thief would not be able to activate internet without first factory resetting everything.
I also tried calling the phone multiple times to no avail because it has been turned off. Is there any way for me to recover the phone or at least wipe it completely? I had an SD card on there with mildly sensitive information, I should have encrypted but did not.
Any ideas for how to wipe/find/recover/block/brick/self-detonate the phone would be greatly appreciated!
Im affraid its gone
as you say it would be factory reset so you cant even remotely install anything. its a real shame.
Google also dont track anything so best you can hope is IMEI to network and police. but chances are it will go abroad
I'm in Thailand and my carrier doesn't block IMEI's for some reason. I also had a 32 gig SD card in there from Sandisk, epic fail!!!! :crying:
The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is so great that you should pass the greatness of it forward.
did you set up your samsung account on it? the chances are bad but you should try locating it from here
Even though its too late now. Few things You Can learn from this . 1. Use the Cerbus APP its Much better than and theft APP as it Can survive A full Wipe . Also, always Keep your internet on

Hating my S3 lately

So I've getting the no sound+drop signal problem these last weeks where you don't hear anything when making a call and then the phone loses all signal. Looked everywhere online no solution. I really need my phone these days and i am having to use skype to make a call which is total crap. Then today all of the sudden the phone stops recognizing the sdcard out of the blue, also can't seem to find any solution online. I don't want to send the thing to repair because I use it a ton. This is really inconvenient.
Just venting here , sigh.....

Which problem you mean, the call issue or the micro sdcard issue? I am running stock 4.1.2 jb and i have orange. The worst is that these problems start on their own all of the sudden with no previous warning. It drives one insane because it's so hard to pinpoint what happened and how to fix it.

I am sorry but I read the rules and didn't see anything that said that no venting was allowed here, this is a general forum and in most forums general means general chat, venting included, or anything else that doesn't fit in more specific boards. Now regarding your question I didn't do wiping nor factory reset but I did reinstall the Jelly bean ROM I am using, and also I tried reinstalling the modem making sure it was the right one. I didn't do more because I've read in the big "no sound during calls" thread that those methods haven't solved most users' issues so far so seems like a waste of time. Anyway spending my time fixing the phone is my idea of a good time. I've had it for one year btw.

Yeah usually only when a metal case is used does it ever really interfere I suppose.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Possible problems:
1) Wrong modem. Flash one that worked previously.
2) Mobile phone network problems (we tend to overlook this a lot). Contact your carrier and ask if your networks keep going down.
3) Signal interference (maybe some casing, maybe something in your house)
4) Damaged phone (maybe the signal receiver got damaged in a fall)
I've been having similar signal drop issues. Phone shows 2 bars but no data use, no sound when trying to ring out, can't receive a call. If I toggle 2g, signal will spring back to life and data will show. Changed bloody everything trying to resolve it. Orange UK.
