nexus s vibrate - Nexus S General

hey folks, just noticed my nexus won't vibrate at all. tried messaging settings and all options are checked. I've tried as much as possible to get this to vibrate with no luck. think it's toast?

does it give you the little bumb right when you turn it on?
take the battery out put it back in then hold the power button. it should give a vibrate then. if not, then yea you need a new vibrator.

Not going to say it.....just not going to say it. =p

thanks for the reply guys. Did a battery pull and still no luck. This is my wife's phone so its not rooted, and with all the games she plays I'll never hear stop hearing about the loss of progress. Installed a few different keyboards to see even if the haptic would fire up, no luck. She said it worked a few weeks ago, but noticed recently that it's gone. I went through ever setting I can find to try to test and and still not a shake.

Sounds like ur gonna have to use ur factory warranty.

thats what I was thinking...ok my device is rooted so I can use titanium. Her device isn't. Is there any way to pull her game saves off the device without a root? If the nexus had oneclick root/unroot I'd rip that off no problem. The two rooting methods are quite different, and especially with this going back don't want anything to void the warranty.

Yea bro, sounds like your wife wore out her vibrator. You can root without unlocking the bootloader iirc then use titanium then unroot. Copy the backup to your PC then swap phones

you should be able to do a
Code:
adb pull /data/ /data/
and
Code:
adb pull /sdcard/ /sdcard/
that will copy her data partition where the games are and the sdcard partition to a folder wherever you ran the command. i haven't tried this but without root there isn't much you can mess up

adb is new to me. this unrooted crap annoys me, compared to using my cap. So firing up cmd, running those two commands with the device in (recovery menu?), should pull the data files? now when I get a new phone back, I will be rooting hers, would I drop the data files back in?

Yea pretty much. It doesn't have to be in recovery but if you are make sure to mount the partitions.

I actually have this problem. It happened in the first month I got the phone. Someone on the forums recommended that I do a factory reset. But because I didn't root and I don't want to reinstall everything, so I just use the nexus s without vibration. The vibrate will fix itself once a month for a couple days and then die again so I dunno what it is. Please let me know how you fix it. Thanks!

Cuz if its just the screen that is normal, its the proximity sensor

Its weird, I haven't had this problem on any other android phone, its happened twice in the last 24 hours. I'm completely stock. Unrooted
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I can count on one hand the number of phone calls I've been on since I got the thing, but I haven't had it shut down on me any of those times.
I've had it happen every time when rooted and had apps. I went back to no apps and still had it happen. I went back to stock 2.3.1 via the nandroid around here and locked it back up, still doing it.
The only thing I didn't test was 2.3 vs 2.3.1 but I do believe it started happening to me, at least, when going to 2.3.1, now that I think about it.
I have this problem but rarely. It will reboot the phone show the nexus startup screen without the backlit LED. Is that whats happening to you?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Same here, and I have used every T-Mobile Android phone to date, never seen anything like this before! This is the only phone I haven't rooted yet, not sure what the issue is...
It only happened once so I didn't think anything of it.
I didn't know it was a common problem.
Btw I will be exchanging my phone cuz this one has done really annoying bugs, like freezing in between homescreen slides and apps constantly fc during use
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
ya i havent made very many calls, but thats why it kind of concerns me. i have probablly made 10 calls and i think its rebooted 3-4 times while on the call or at the end of the call. i wonder if its a bug with the phone app?
did you root the phone or something ? if its still on stock firmware like how you bought it, then try to restore factory sittings, if its still doing that you then you have a I/O chip problem. and you will need to replace your phone.
thats what the HTC care told me when my HD2 used to have this issue

I would believe it was hardware if it happened randomly, but for phone calls only, that sounds like software.

I'm not rooted, I just cleared data for the dialer app and cleared cache on the whole system, we'll see if that does anything. Good thing I rarely use my phone for making calls or I'd be pissed

Help needed ASAP for broken epic

I need to take my phone back to sprint, seems there is a hardware problem with the phones charging circuit. it will not mount to the computer, it will sort of charge, but if you unplug the cord, it just thinks its still charging. if you turn it off, it either just stays off until you pull the battery or sometimes it just reboots itself. it will not charge when off etc.
I tried 3 different roms so I know its not the rom.
So odin is out. I have bonsai rom and clockwork mod on the phone. I don't think thats a good idea to take it to sprint like this. is there anyway to get it back to stock?
anyone help please?
Just to make sure, have you tried putting it in download mode? It doesn't necessarily need to mount to computer for odin to recognize it.

Agreed, that's what I was getting at.If odin will at least recognize it and start to flash, even if it fails it'll stick at boot screen.

ugg, I got this clockwork v 3.0.0.5 and I tried to run an old update.zip figuring maybe i'd brick the phone or get it back to stock and it won't work with that version of clockwork. I don't know what the heck to do, i can't walik in with it like this.

Just follow the instructions. Good luck. Let me know if you have any problems. I had a bricked epic once and that solved my problem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
yea, odin is a no go, thats the problem i tried odin on two different computers, you want to know how screwed up this thing in? sometimes it boots up and thinks its in car dock mode.
Try a different USB cable? If odin is just impossible, remove sd card, take a short piece of wire with bare ends, have phone powered on, and short whatever you find on the back, fry the board. Sad, but gotta take it out back and put a bullet in its head.
Really though, IF the Sprint employee even notices, chances are they won't say anything anyway. Never did for me.

how much does it cost for them to fix it? tried 2 different cables and i know they were working, i know its not the cable because, when i plug in the charger, it doesn't ring up usb debugging when that is selected and you only supposed to be able to deselect or select usb debugging when the cable is out, but I can toggle it on and off with the cable in or out.
Go to another phnes thread
Maybe the EVO
Download a rom from there and then flash it through cwm
BOOM! Insta-brick 8)

since i'm rooted and they would be foolish not to notice i'm rooted and it seems there is no way for me to unroot or go to a stock rom, would it be better to just brick the thing? i hate to do that do to the fact that then i'm stuck without a phone. Plus what if I brick it and they find out it was rooted? can they do that?
If its truly bricked, no they can't. Them knowing its rooted isn't that big of a deal, they'd either attempt to revert it to an official build anyway, or they'll tell you they can't take it that way, as in bring it back stock.
I've taken in 2 Epics for hardware issues, one was screen, the other keyboard. Both were rooted, one was on stock build and the other on custom rom. They restored stock software to the custom rommed phone before they decided the screen was actually broken lol

While that would be the "smart" thing for a company to do, Sprint's official policy on rooting is that they will revert it to stock if they see that it's rooted during any repairs.

apparently the policy has changed, as after waiting an hour and a half, they came back and said its rejected because it was flashed and i lack common sense apparently when I mentioned that it doesn't say anything about that anywhere.
If u can put the phone in download mode the problems r the drivers on your pc should check that or try different pc.

[Q] MyTouch 4g Problems

Okay here is my whole story. I decided to root my MyTouch 4g yesterday. So I went ahead and went through with it. I was required to downgrade to Froyo since I was running Gingerbread. So I did all of that through adb. When all was done. I flashed the Virtuous Unity rom. When I started it up everything was fine. I was enjoying it for about 2 hours while I was playing with it and texting and chatting with my friends. Then when I was about to go to sleep it froze. So I did a battery pull and started it back up. That is when I noticed that it was staying on the Mytouch 4g screen. Then it went to Clockworkmod Recovery. I tried to restore but it keeps saying that it can't mount the system. I also tried to use bootloader and downloaded the PD15IMG.zip file and placed it on there. It would say 'No image or wrong image' Then it would go and say Fail-Pu for all of the images. I have tried absolutely EVERYTHING. Any advice please! I am desperate, my mom is going to kill me!

Wipe everything
Go to mount/format
turn on USB storage thing (connect to computer)
Download a different Rom to the computer an transfer it to The phone
Flash it and hopefully it works
I can't even get onto my phone. It is just the MyTouch 4G screen and then it goes to Cwm Recovery and that's it. =/
That's what I'm talking about from recovery you can connect you phone to the computer

does clockworkmod recovery give you errors about not being able to mount cache?
cause that sounds a LOT like my old phone, which ended up dead because of a fail eMMC chip.

Well my mom is planning to take my phone to a local T-Mobile store tomorrow! I really don't think that it is a good idea since my phone is rooted and once it gets past the splash screen it will start up cwm recovery! So should I just brick the phone to the point where it doesn't turn on and just say it just turned off and wouldn't turn back on? Would that be the best way?

From what I hear, they don't care if a device is rooted, just make sure that the stock ROM is on there.
So I call them, they send me a replacement phone, I get it, send my broken phone back to them, they test to see if it is broken, it stays on the splash screen for 5 minutes until booting into Clockworkmod Recovery, then what will they do once they see that? Will they take it as broken? PLEASE ANSWER! =/

Broken phone

Dropped my phone this week, and even though I have a flip case it landed open and face down (sods law), resulting in the screen being smashed and completely unresponsive.
Kind of hoping that the insurer can repair it. Not a big deal as 99% of data on the phone is held in the cloud. The big annoyance for me is if I have to get a new phone I have to start all of my games again from the start. I wish Google would fix this where all app data is genuinely backed up to the cloud, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to do this.
Without rooting are there any apps out there that can do this? Think I know the answer already but just thought I would put it out here.
In the mean time I'm rocking a Nokia 1650

You need it rooted to gain access to the root partition of the phone, where all the app data is stored. I do not think you can backup any app data without root. You could unlock the bootloader and root it, backup the app data you need, then un-root and re-lock the loader if you're that much against rooting it.

Trying to recover my phone w/ broken screen

So my S4 took its last drop last night and I was trying to get my pics and music off. The phone shows up on my PC but since it is locked I can't access my data. Is this possible to recover the data before I toss the phone away? What about a usb to HDMI will that let me see the screen so that I might be able to unlock it? Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't know if you want to try this before throwing it away, but I changed my wifes s3 screen for 7 bucks with a screen from amazon. Came with all the tools and checked how to on youtube. Took 45minutes but it was badly shattered. Just an idea.
If you have anyone that has the same phone just switch motherboards once you are done swap them again
