and buy shut down you mean physically power off? or the screen turn off?
Cuz if its just the screen that is normal, its the proximity sensor

Power down

Its weird, I haven't had this problem on any other android phone, its happened twice in the last 24 hours. I'm completely stock. Unrooted
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

I can count on one hand the number of phone calls I've been on since I got the thing, but I haven't had it shut down on me any of those times.

I've had it happen every time when rooted and had apps. I went back to no apps and still had it happen. I went back to stock 2.3.1 via the nandroid around here and locked it back up, still doing it.
The only thing I didn't test was 2.3 vs 2.3.1 but I do believe it started happening to me, at least, when going to 2.3.1, now that I think about it.

I have this problem but rarely. It will reboot the phone show the nexus startup screen without the backlit LED. Is that whats happening to you?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App

Same here, and I have used every T-Mobile Android phone to date, never seen anything like this before! This is the only phone I haven't rooted yet, not sure what the issue is...

It only happened once so I didn't think anything of it.
I didn't know it was a common problem.
Btw I will be exchanging my phone cuz this one has done really annoying bugs, like freezing in between homescreen slides and apps constantly fc during use

ya i havent made very many calls, but thats why it kind of concerns me. i have probablly made 10 calls and i think its rebooted 3-4 times while on the call or at the end of the call. i wonder if its a bug with the phone app?

did you root the phone or something ? if its still on stock firmware like how you bought it, then try to restore factory sittings, if its still doing that you then you have a I/O chip problem. and you will need to replace your phone.
thats what the HTC care told me when my HD2 used to have this issue

I would believe it was hardware if it happened randomly, but for phone calls only, that sounds like software.
Sent from my Nexus S

Happened to me just now. Stock 2.3.1 with an international call.

I'm not rooted, I just cleared data for the dialer app and cleared cache on the whole system, we'll see if that does anything. Good thing I rarely use my phone for making calls or I'd be pissed

Do you have setcpu or a OC kernal by any chance?
I am having this happen also... I have had to remove my battery three times today to reboot the phone.
I have set CPU installed, is that a bad idea?
I'm rooted with just the stock OS, no mods at all and my phone will randomly reboot every two or three days.

did you wipe your SD cards when you flashed the new rom? I don't have this behavior but I did have FC's and such because of some files on the SD. I have NONE of this behavior. Something is wrong for you, nothing is wrong with JI2 and freezing/rebooting.

I used to have this problem all the time too whenever I tried to use the gps, but since I've applied the leaked update that problem has gone away. But it seems like you're experiencing the issue at more random times. Have you noticed any particular pattern? For example, whenever you try to play music in the background and read a website at the same time.

Yup mine is bone stock not Rooted and it will lock up just siting there GPS, wireless and Bluetooth off in a very good signal area.
Same here on both roms. I thought the lag fix was causing the freeze. But now im stock jit2 and root.
Had the same with gps and maps with old firmware.

I haven't had this issue happen since I applied the flashable gps fix. Maybe it was an issue with an app that wanted to use GPS running in the background?
This has happened to me several times while booting gps and only recently started happening while playing pandora, but not as frequent as while using the gps...not rooted

Mine has only frozen up once and it was at the end of a call screen turned off. I hit power and went to go unlock and it turned off again.. Would not turn back on but I know the phone was still on since I had apmobile enabled and it was still transmitting wifi connection. Oh I was using eugene's FrankenTwiz (underclocked to 400mhz)when it happened but same thing happened to my girlfriend and she had hybrid r3. Other than phone runs fine.
Ive had some odd reboots where I dont get a shutdown or boot animation or sounds, just freezes, goes black, keys light up, searching for signal boot process. Yesterday in maps trying to troubleshoot my gps. Stock rom, rooted, Ryan's lagfix.
Vibrant vibrating nicely now,Kthx!
Have the phone replaced. I had a phone that would randomly freeze and/or reboot. Nothing I did would fix it.
I talked to a T-mobile worker who had the same issue with one of the early demo-phones Samsung loaned to him. They just replaced his without every saying what the problem was.
I've been having this happen a lot lately myself, it happened to me before on stock ROM due to SetCPU, but now on the leaked ROM. I did not clean the SD card (internal or external), so will give that a shot when I have some time to copy files on/off the SD cards (one reason to dislike the internal SD is that I have to mount it to copy the files, ergh).

Would loss of data or phone freezing be fixed over OTA

Would they fix the sudden loss of data over the air update??? This is my second device and im still having the issue of suddenly the pgone gey stuck on actuve phone trying to hang up and it wont even hang up the phone, i have to power cycle the phone in order for it to become normal. I really dony wanna return the phone but i really hope they fix this issue. I called Samsung they told me there is nothing they can do but to go get it exchanged or send it to samsung for repair.

First thing that I'd try is to get rid of full screen caller ID and see if the problem is still around... if it is... just do a factory reset and don't install any apps, make some calls and see if the problem is still there. If it isn't... you know it's one of those apps.

Must either be bad silicone, or a bad rogue app... You can try a factory reset and try again! Also this needs to be in the Q&A section, this is not a general topic.
I had it reboot after I took a picture, then I swiped to left to see the picture while in camera mode. Zoomed in on the picture, heard some screeching sounds (probably from auto focus of camera?) and then it rebooted.
I hasn't tried to reproduce it, but I do hear the screeching once in a while if I go into picture view from camera mode.
I have had random reboots with my nexus 7 on 4.2, so I think it's more of a software issue than anything else.

It is just 4.2 bugs supposedly. I am sure it will be fixed.

I have random reboots. As of yesterday, my phone rebooted 3 times. This morning I woke up, luckily before my alarm normally goes off, and notices my phone screen was on, but nothing was actually on the screen. I pressed the power button a few times and nothing happened. I unplugged the phone from the charger, tried it again, and notice the screen flicker, and then reboot. This morning it's already rebooted once.
Most of the time I was in Google Play Store, so I cleared the cache and data, and let it update to the newest version, so hopefully that fixes it. I sure hope I don't have a lemon. I really hope that the phone acting weird doesn't happen again, I can't afford to miss my alarm going off.
Mine has turned off on me twice since I got it. I think I was using bluetooth both times, but I can't be sure. Anyways, the Galaxy Nexus had issues like this when it first came out and the new Windows Phones have rebooting issues as well. I think Google rushed Android 4.2 out, but I'm sure everything will be stable after another OTA or two. That's the worst and best part about having a Nexus. You get brand new software first, so you sometimes feel like a beta tester, but you also get the fixes extremely quickly.
Glad I'm not the only one having random reboots. My n4 has rebooted twice this morning (within 2hrs). One hot and one cold.

Same happened to me today but i wasnt able to recreate issue.
I heard some screeching sound and then screen frozen and there it rebooted.
But after that i tryed to take pictures and i heard that screeching again but it not rebooted.
This was my frist time that Nexus 4 rebooted.
So
Software or Hardware issue?
I didn't have a reboot but shut off. First time yesterday and had the phone since Nov 20th. It wouldn't turn back on, not even charge .. Took maybe 30mins then it turned on. I was just texting, put the phone down.. Screen shutoff, wanted to text again and nothing. I have it unlocked and rooted only.. Stock everything.

My nexus 4 now on 4.2.2 just randomly rebooted for the 1st time.
I 'm dissapointed. Waited for this OTA for a couple months now for it to just fix this issue and it's still here? :/
I just can't be angry at the device cause i 'm absolutely in love with it. Best device ever made and 4.2.1 (and 4.2.2) are amazingly consistent and stable, but for this issue.
pff just hope that we don't have to wait till KLP for this to be worked out.

Has your phone frozen on you yet?

I bought two of these galaxy s fours and also convinced my girlfriend who is a long time Apple iPhone user to switch over. I personally have experience one freeze that force me to restart the phone and hasn't happened to me since. My girlfriend on the other hand I was just getting used to the phone and beginning to like it but then she says her music player would be getting to get stuck and also couldn't answer a phone call because her phone was frozen during this. She said it froze about 3 times now forcing her to reboot.. I'm curious to know how is anyone else experienced this issue I understand that phones can get stuck for several reasons doesn't mean it's defective but I'm still curious to know how many people here have experienced at least one freeze up.

It happens to me once every day or every two days. I think its an app or two that I have that is not fully compatible with my s4. I have removed a couple of apps that I think is causing the problem.

Lock screen and Knock On Solution

Strangely, my phone stopped responding to knock on to wake the screen. When you pressed the hardware power button to wake the screen would immediately close. It would take about 10-15 tries to unlock the screen in that split second before it closed. To troubleshoot I flashed back to factory and I still had the same issue after the phone was allowed to sleep just a few minutes. I took the OTA, same problem.
I was ready to box it up and swap out, but decided to try one other thing. I went to the screen off effect and changed it to Simple. Everything worked fine after that. I switched it back to retro tv and it would take many more tries to wake the screen. apparently its some kind of software bug. Thought I'd pass the info on to anyone else having similar issues.
Apparently root apps that play with system files trigger the bug too, like greenify. So the bug isn't tied to one screen effect, just switching to another fixes it until you play with system files via flashing or root apps. Hopefully it's something they fix in the next update.
It seems if you flash or change any system files, it reverts back to the retro tv effect and the issue repeats until change to another transition.
So the knock on feature is supposed to be more reliable if I do this?

If you are suffering from the same software bug, it works. If you flash a mod or do anything that does a "updating android" on reboot, it reverts back to the default screen effect and the knock on becomes unreliable. After a deep sleep you can't wake it with a knock most of the time. Strange but saved me a trip verizon hell for a swap.
Wow!!! I can totally confirm that this is working! Thank you so much... I was getting to the point that I didn't really use the knock on feature due to the flakiness of it... Now it works flawlessly!

Im getting the same problem with mine, but the retro screen switch to simple isnt solving the problem. Tsking so many tries and not being able to knock on is making the phone unusable.

Make sure the sensor area to the right of the FF camera is clean. If you have a screen protector over it, you might want to pull it off and clean the area really good. If that sensor is blocked or not working, it will do the same thing whether or not you change the screen off settings. Could be a bad sensor and you may need to swap it out.
Tried cleaning it, no luck. Seems like its hw related. Off to vzw I go.

Greenify or any root program that modifys system files has the possibility of triggering the bug. In my personal testing, after you change the screen off to something different after installing Greenify, it stops. I'm guessing the core issue is with the front sensor that disables knock on. A hardware software combination. Strangely even after flashing back to stock doesn't fix the bug. First deep sleep and it will return until you change that setting in screen off.

Nothing seems to fully resolve this. Super annoyed I ever installed Greenify. Ugh.
I'm within my 14 days (I got it on Monday), but I purchased from letstalk (the $26 price mistake deal that lasted a few minutes). Does anybody know if I can just walk into Verizon to switch it out, or do I have to do the mail back, wait 5 days with no phone thing?
thanks
I've only replaced the phones I directly received from Verizon in person. Call Verizon and tell them you needed to swap a phone under the 14 days. They can look at your account and tell you if you can just swap it in person or if you need to return through the reseller.

In theory, Greenify may break such a feature like Knock-on, but its always recoverable. Simply de-greenify the app and manually launch it to restore everything to normal.
Please avoid greenifying any app with background functionality.
PS: Greenify actually never touch any system files.
