f)http://attachments.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=687157&d=1313224429 (Radio file only required for I9020A)
Okay so when done with all that proceed as follows
1) Backup your current apps using Titanium Backup (Optional/Recommended)
2) Backup(Nandroid) your rom using backup option in CWM (Optional/Recommended)
3) Do a full wipe, wipe sdcard, system, data, cache Transfer a,b,c,f to your phone.
4) Flash the 2.3.6 Official I9020T Build you had downloaded using the install zip option in CWM (IMP-DO NOT REBOOT RIGHT NOW)
5) Flash the flashable SU file you had downloaded and then reboot.
6) Once your phone is on, continue to set up your account or skip it as you wish. (Optional)
7) Open up market, download the latest SU app, Voodoo OTARootKeeper, Titanium Backup and any other app you use that requires root.
8) Open the updated SU app, hit menu button and click preferences, go all the way down, click on su binary(tap to check for updates) , and make sure it updates to v3.0.3
9) After that is done, open and allow root permissions to all your root apps. (This is important)
9.5) Run Voodoo OTARootKeeper and click on protect root, make sure all options get checked.
10) Turn off phone, keep volume up and power pressed to boot into fastboot.
11) Select recovery with volume buttons and use power to launch.
12) Once you see a android bot image and an arrow image, keep volume up pressed and press power once, then you'll see some options appear.
13) Select apply update option and find the official 4.0.3 OTA file you had downloaded and flash. Reboot.
14) Once you have booted into ICS, go to Voodoo OTARootKeeper and select resture Root, all options should now be ticked, if not something went wrong.
15) Voila, you have root. Now to get back CWM recovery you can follow this -
i) Place the recovery img file in the android sdk platform-tools folder
ii) Switch to the directory where you unzipped the Android SDK & go to "tools"
iii) Then type "fastboot flash recovery yourfilename.img" & hit enter
iv) That should do it.
v) Optionally you may do it form Rom Manager too, if it works.
16) (ONLY FOR I9020A) Reboot phone, turn it off, boot into fastboot, select recovery, CWM should launch, flash the radio file you had downloaded to get radio working on I9020A (ONLY FOR I9020A)
Root only works for the apps that were installed while on 2.3.6
http://downloads.androidsu.com/superuser/Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip , use this root file, flash it in cwm, everything works, permissions etc.
This might work for other variants, tested on I9020A and I9020T, I take no responsibility for anything that might go wrong with your device. I take no credit for any links or procedures provided in this guide, I just tested and compiled.
Thanks and best of luck.

Do I really need to flash official 2.3.6 before ICS? what if I wipe and format then install 4.0 immediately?

Might not work, though you can try, if it fails, do it my way, also its impossible to get any kind of root that way.
Link for the ATT Radio doesnt seem to be working
Great work!
wipe SD card?
Is this necessary?
I don't think it's necessary to wipe the SD card, I followed the procedure in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396913 and although it said my SD card would be wiped, everything was still there after I was done!
Anyone on a i9023 tried this?
Hmm...does "any version" includes M200(Korean Nexus S)?

I think he meant that for the 9020A radio
Link fixed, sorry for that, SD wiping might not be necessary, but I suggest as it makes it cleaner. Might work for I9023 and M200, I have no clue, maybe some experienced developer can answer that better.
Not to crap on a great tutorial, This is exactly what I would be looking for if I were not already set up and running. Last night was a dizzying whirlwind of flashing, high heart rates and finally becoming familiar with fastboot and flashing things like that.....lol
But in the end I simply found a cwm flashable zip without radio or bootloader and installed through cwm like any other rom. As far as root all I did was flash a zip file found on the forums and I was good to go.
Hi mine keeps hanging in the boot animation and can't get into recovery, what else can i do? Is my phone bricked?
little hiccup at step 12. im getting the android bot with exclamation mark but i press volume up with power and nothing happens. menu doesnt show up....
Edit: NVM... i pressed it 3 or 4 times and it finally worked

Many ways of doing it, I just am suggesting one, the flashable zip for ics isn't available as yet, what did you flash?
i9020 keeps getting status 7 aborted and my padlock is still unlocked on t-mobile 2.3.6

Of course there are other ways, but as our grand master of Cyanogen and Samsung ceremonies, sir Entropy pointed out, the only 100% SAFE WAY to do it is by reverting to GB, WITH PC ODIN, NOT MOBILE ODIN.

The "Return-to-GB" should only be made once you're on "dangerous" kernels, such as Stock Samsung ICS, or ROMs based on stock Samsung ICS. In the case of Cyanogen, you can flash back and forth (with the mention of full-wiping in between, as the guide in their OP says) as much as you want.
No return to GB needed between CM9 and CM10

Wrong, now he says that you only have to flash the CM9 safe kernel from CM9 thread FAQ. If you look at the last CM9 thread, you find that Entropy said several times there's no need to flash GB or abyss kernel.

People are too ****ing obsessed with this Abyss ****... There are plenty of safe kernel options, as long as you avoid anything based on a Samsung stock kernel. All source-built custom kernels I am aware of other than Franco r1 and r2 (r3 and later are fine) are safe.

Well I'm working on a stock based ROM right now. CM will have to be somebody much more talented than myself.
Is root compatible with the 9.7" LTE (T815)? It's basically the same hardware as the T715 so should work but would love a confirmation on this as I don't see it listed the top section of the thread. Thanks much

Is there a root for SM-T817T running 5.1.1 build LMY47X.T817TUVUIAOG8?

You can use the t810 root. The only issue is that your stock recovery will say t810. Irrelevant if you install twrp or just root with twrp itself.
Sorry for the complete noob question, but I am running the verizon version of the tablet Model SM-T817V android version 5.1.1.
Is this just like live4thamuziks S2 and my S2 is fully compatible to root using this method? I would reallly not like to brick my device!

Nope. You cannot use this method.
Hi,everyone!
Please advise would CF-Autoroot and TWRP work on SM-T815Y?
Thanks, However I think I am going to hold off until there is a root specifically for the t817t on 5.1.1 AOG8 cause I've read that a lot of people who flash the t810 root have bootloop issues, cannot use 4G LTE and cant go back to the stock t817.

The ONLY people having bootloop issues are the ones that don't read instructions properly!
Flashing a t810 kernel on an LTE device will lose LTE connectivity.
There won't be a specific root for T817T as it's the same as the t815.
Worked perfectly! Successfully rooted my new S2 last weekend. Thank you. Was able to FREEZE 40+ running applications via Titanium Root which has had a magnificent impact on battery life. Life is good on the other (rooted) side!

RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING boot loop
Dear all,
Reeally appricite your effort getting full control of our tab S2!
Clearly I have done something very wrong while rooting, and updating my S2 from LL 5.0.2; I'm now at the point where my 810 tab are in a "endless" booting loop what the top-right corner of the boot screen are showing "RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING", looks like there is an attempt to boot, but it don't succeed.
Before I go further and make things even worse I wonder if you have hints or ideas that can help me get the tab s2 running andirod agian? (please...)
This is what I did:
from factory state wiht 5.0.2 on smt810:
I rooted : smt810_cf_autoroot.tar - booted -root working
I twrp - t810_twrp_LL_5.0.2.tar - booting - all working
I updated the sw : 810_oh7_fw_BigBot96.tar.md5 -- and is **** here, in the RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING loop
Clearly I'm not a expert, that have done something wrong - agian, truly appriciate any hints.

It quite clearly states in this thread and MY original root thread that you must install the permissive kernel and the updated twrp for lollipop 5.1.1.

Yahoo - Yet a example it helps to read before doing. Thanks a zillion!
I looked at other threads, and they either were really confusing, or weren't pertaining to my phone. Can someone give me a clear answer of how to root my phone?
Phone: AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4
Model Number: SAMGSUNG-SGH-1337
Android Version: 5.0.1 Lollipop
And also, I need a way of removing Knox. But rooting it is the priority!
Thanks in advance.
Okay I Found a Link
I decided to come on today, and saw that DoJCole posted a verified way of rooting the type of phone I have. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-att/general/root-att-s4-5-0-1-t3165816

Don't Use This Method ( Kingroot ) ... Kindly Use This Method [How-To] Update to I337_OC4 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot @muniz_ri
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...-to-update-to-i337oc3-5-0-1-keeproot-t3075814
Because This Method Only Able To Get Proper Root Access ... I Used Kingroot ->Successfully Rooted --> But Not Able To Install Anything Like [ Custom ROM ] ..So Always Use " Update to I337_OC4 - 5.0.1 and KeepRoot " Metthod .. Without Issues It Will Works :good:

The thing is, I don't need to update- I need to first root my phone. This update requires an already-rooted phone. Also, I don't need to update my phone.
Thanks for repsonding though!
EDIT: Wait, are you saying that I should first root using Kingroot, and then update to 1337_OC4?

No , Downgrade I337UCUFNB1_Rootable_Full_Odin : https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358548937
And Download I337_OC4_Stock_Rooted_ROM
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24052804347800728
If you are not already rooted (or to unbrick) you must first flash the I337UCUFNB1_Rootable_Full_Odin.tar (use Odin's PDA slot (AP in Odin v3.09+), root with Towelroot, then proceed with the above process.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23681161096070831
Then Install FlashFire ... Give Root Permission
Attention! Set your screen timeout to 10mins before beginning!
1. Place the ROM onto your device (use either internal or ext-sdcard).
2. Open the FlashFire app and "Agree" to the Terms and Conditions.
3. Press "(+)" twice to bring up the "Actions" menu.
4. Select "Flash Zip or OTA" and locate and select the ROM. Leave "Auto-mount" unchecked under the "Options" menu and press the checkmark to continue.
5. From the main menu Uncheck all options under "EverRoot" and set Reboot setting to "Download."
6. Press the lightning bolt then "Ok" to begin the flash.
7. Once the flash is complete and the device reboots into "Download" mode, flash the I337_OC4_Bootloader using Odin's PDA/AP slot. Done!
The screen will turn black then display the contents of your system before beginning the flash. FlashFire will pause for about 1 minute while flashing the "system" partition. Once complete your device will reboot and pause on the AT&T splash screen for about 1 - 2 minutes (15 - 20 mins for DeOdexed version) before completely rebooting. Done!
Tip: for blazing fast speed turn off animations from Developer Options and reboot!
-_- I don't get it

:| Did I mention that I'm a noob too? I rooted a phone once before (Samsung Galaxy Mega GT-i9152) and it wasn't this complicated for me... and does this bypass Knox? Thanks for responding to me so fast though.
The thing is, I don't understand what its saying...
EDIT: Okay, I see what's going on now. I can't root directly from 5.0.1- need to downgrade.

That link is a thread in which an answerer answered the question with two links. Its a two part process to rooting the 5.0.1 Android.
