There is no point in going back to Gingerbread. There are plenty of safe ICS kernels to flash from. Never EVER have I gone back to gingerbread, and I've tried almost every ROM in this forum.

Of course there are other ways, but as our grand master of Cyanogen and Samsung ceremonies, sir Entropy pointed out, the only 100% SAFE WAY to do it is by reverting to GB, WITH PC ODIN, NOT MOBILE ODIN.
Both might work, but the 100% sure one is the PC-Odin-return-to-GB-way

The "Return-to-GB" should only be made once you're on "dangerous" kernels, such as Stock Samsung ICS, or ROMs based on stock Samsung ICS. In the case of Cyanogen, you can flash back and forth (with the mention of full-wiping in between, as the guide in their OP says) as much as you want.
No return to GB needed between CM9 and CM10

Wrong, now he says that you only have to flash the CM9 safe kernel from CM9 thread FAQ. If you look at the last CM9 thread, you find that Entropy said several times there's no need to flash GB or abyss kernel.

People are too ****ing obsessed with this Abyss ****... There are plenty of safe kernel options, as long as you avoid anything based on a Samsung stock kernel. All source-built custom kernels I am aware of other than Franco r1 and r2 (r3 and later are fine) are safe.

This thread is reserved for nightly builds of CyanogenMod Rom for Samsung Captivate.
All Samsung Roms run on top of BML/RFS, CyanogenMod 7 does NOT.
It runs on MTD/yaffs2 (like Nexus One) which means you'll not able to flash just any kernel or run just any other filesystem you want. Use it as it is if possible, otherwise confirm with the kernel developer that you are trying to install whether it would work with CM. We do not support other kernels and know nothing about their capabilities or compatibility. Only the data partition, which is on movinand, is ext4 like on speedmod or voodoo ("lagfix"). No "lagfix" is necessary because this does not use any Samsung proprietary file systems.
CyanogenMod is a free, community built distribution of Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) which greatly extends the capabilities of your phone.
Code:
** These CyanogenMod builds are highly experimental and unsupported.
**
** Please refrain from submitting bug reports for any issues
** you may encounter while running one of these builds.
**
** Submitting bug reports on nightly builds is the leading
** cause of male impotence.
What are Nightly builds? Auto compiled build of the latest CyanogenMod source from github. This version changes each night and aren't officially supported.
If you find bugs/issues you can/must discuss here (do not submit nightlies bugs on CyanogenMod issue tracker).
Warning : Not for new users, flash this build only if you know what you are doing !!! Make SURE you can get into Download mode using only buttons (no other method, Download mode from just buttons is essential).
INSTRUCTIONS:
Latest version: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=captivatemtd
Check the md5sum if you want to be sure that the download worked (different OSes have different programs that do md5, on ubuntu it is md5sum that you run against the zip you download and compare to the md5sum number shown on the download website). ROMManager does this automatically for ROMs you download via ROMManager.
- First time flashing CM 7 to your Captivate (or coming from another ROM)?
Easy way:
Start with a rooted Eclair/Froyo running Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders (do not ask us how to do this).
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 2.x).
Make sure you can reboot into ClockworkMod recovery from ROMManager. Reboot and get back into ROMManager Premium.
Choose download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe data, cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Harder way:
Make sure you're running a Eclair/Froyo Firmware (2.1 or 2.2) and Eclair/Froyo Bootloaders!
Root your device and install ClockworkMod Recovery.
Do a Nandroid backup!
WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe cache partition)
Install the ROM from internal sdcard using ClockworkMod Recovery
Optionally install the Google Addon (through ROMManager is easiest)
- Upgrading from earlier CM7?
ROM Manager method:
Install ROMManager Premium.
Flash ClockworkMod Recovery. Pick Captivate (MTD) (ignore the warning about not having an official, pick ClockworkMod 3.x).
Choose Download ROMs.
Pick the CyanogenMod Nightlies.
Check the Google Apps addon.
Check Backup current ROM!
Check wipe cache, dalvik cache.
Let ROMManager finish the installation.
Clockwork Mod method:
Download and push the ROM zip file to the sdcard.
Reboot into recovery.
Do a Nandroid Backup!
Install the ROM zip from sdcard (your Google apps will be backed up automatically)
There are no Google Apps bundled with CM ROMs, because Google asked Cyanogen to remove copyrighted apps. After flashing the rom, don't forget to flash Google Addon package if you want it. ROM Manager will allow you to flash it if you just go into it and after flashing the ClockworkMod recovery for MTD devices, choose Download ROMs, and pick Google Apps.

Just want to make sure my understanding is correct
- Don't use "reboot recovery" command or other shiny things to do this!
Flash cm7-captivate-initial-kernel.tar as pda using odin without auto-reboot
So after flash of efs pull battery, get to dl mode, flash initial kernel with auto reboot off. Pull bay after flash go back to recovery?
Do a wipe
Factory restore in clockwork?
Install the Nexus S USB-Drivers from SDK-Manager if you're using windows.
Are these drivers needed to use odin our just files transfers
To revert to a samsung rom, simply use odin with repartition option enabled.
Does odin one click qualify here or use full version?
Just making sure I understand instructions fully, thanks

No, please read the instructions fifty-thousand times before you do anything. It clearly says to use the three button combo to reboot, directly underneath that. If you do a battery pull while in Download mode, you risk destroying your phone.

These are drivers to use your phone (incorrect, but avoiding the question). Just install the drivers, because the instructions say so. If you don't, you can't plug your phone into your computer.

Odin One Click. Or Odin3. It doesn't matter. Just reboot into Download mode using the button combo and use Odin.
I must be dumb but, There is no efs-backup for initial kernel to even download, Or I'm unable to find it. On that page, all I see is Initial package, update, and google-addon. No kernel, no efs package.
EDIT: k. I just fail. It was inside the initial package. .-.
Thank you for the response. The initial kernel to be flashed via odin is the z image inside the initial package?
This is why I love Android and XDA! Sweet! Even before Samsung releases it to the I9000 (granted it's still under development).
Are the modem links dead for anyone else?
Yeah I have no idea where the "initial kernel" is. It's not ANYWHERE on the site, nor in the initial package.

Great job guys. I want to try this as I will flash almost anything once. I will give it some thought. I feel I am one step above noob. Any noobs out there might want to wait some more. Then again if you are a flasher...
Awesome work/progress.
Edit: I made the plunge. Worth every minute.
hi guys this is my first post i'd expect you all to go easy on me if i make any mistakes, but i have tested it on my international s2 and this method works fine ! this will give you root access and allow you to install all sorts tweaks and custom roms without triggering the binary count !! yep that's right !!
WHAT THIS GUIDE IS GOOD FOR :
*Clean install of ICS.
*Gaining root access with custom kernel flash or increase binary count. NO YELLOW TRIANGLE !
*FIX FOR UNKNOWN SERIAL NUMBER.
*Sorta detailed guide for installing cm9 or any other custom rom.
here's what you need :
*odin 1.85 [link attached]
*check fus downloader . [link attached]
*official stock samsung i9100 ics firmware for your country/region[ in my case it was i9100xwlp7_tml_blabla] get it using check fus downloader.
*cwm.zip [attached]
*your kernel of choice that supports both sammy and aosp/aokp [my preferred is siyah 3.3.2 if you need cwm manager ]
*cwm flashable rom/addon zip.
l
*20 minutes at max.
before you proceed here's a how-to to download stock ics firmware using check fus downloader.
launch the application.on the standard tab on the right side select android from the drop down menu.select gt-i9100 from the devices list and finally the region where you live.then on the left side click check firmware. it will take a few moment and finally a download button will appear in the bottom. press it and wait patiently as it finishes downloading.usually takes about 20-25 mins depending on your connection.
once downloading is finished or if you already have it downloaded, read on:
1. boot into download mode to flash stock firmware if you are not running official samsung ics. if you're running stock firmware then skip step 1. this also fixes the cm9 no serial number issue.
2.flash with odin the official firmware.
3.wait for the phone to boot up automatically.set up and connect the phone again to your PC.
4.after getting detected switch phone to mass storage mode.copy the attached cwm.zip to your external SD card. Also copy your desired cfw like cm9 rc1 in my case and gapps if needed.
5.now disconnect and turn your phone off.reboot into default android recovery using vol up+home+power button combo. let go off the power button once you see the Samsung gt i9100 boot logo.
6.once you successfully manage to get into android 3e recovery, select apply update from external storage and flash the cwm.zip.immidietly your phone will reboot into cwm recovery. this will give you temporary recovery access to flash your phone. if you reboot from this step you will loose your cwm and you will have to repeat the step 3-4 to get it back.
7.once into cwm,choose wipe data/factory reset.
8.then wipe cache partition.
9.go to mounts and storage and format system and data and cache. [this is necessary for a fresh cfw install, it will also ensure your cfw will function correctly.]
10.go to advanced and wipe dalvik cache, wipe battery stats to ensure your battery gauge is reading correctly and there are no previous kernel remnants.
10.then press power button to come back to main menu and select install zip from sd card.
11.choose your rom from sd card and wait till it finishes flashing.
12.reboot your phone once done.
if your rom comes with gapps then your flashing process ends here.if not or if you want flash modem or a different kernel then read on.replace gapps mentioned below with your desired package and the rest of the process are the same.
13.set up your rom.
14.press and hold the power button and select recovery from the reboot sub menu.
15.once back into cwm flash gapps/kernel/modem/add on package.
16.once finished go to advanced and select fix permissions. [necessary in case of gapps, other wise not needed]
17.reboot and you're done
Enjoy your newly rooted and flashed phone with no binary increase ! :highfive:
just to make sure there is no binary count increase, turn off your phone.press vol down+power+menu and get into download mode.you will see it reads binary as official samsung.
Hope this guide helps.please follow the steps i mentioned. i will not be held responsible for any damage caused to your phone but i believe there won't be any as I tried and tested it myself on my i9100 after a faulty flashable zip messed my phone up.please press the like button if i could help you.
please leave a comment if you need further help. I will not be attending pms at the moment.thanks !

no rooting will not delete any data
I think there is a problem with the recovery file
---------- Post added at 11:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:19 PM ----------
If you will use "Installing Stock Rooted Rom" method then it will be formatted, but if it's rooting with some file then i think it's ok
I completed step 3, it said that all completed but now it is stuck in a restart loop, it shows some error colors (see image), then it shows Samsung logo, vibrates 3-4 times and it restarts again.
I cannot seem to get it recovery mode (UP+Power), download mode enters OK (Down+Power).
Any ideas ?

do you have solved this problem? I have the same picture after installed the CF-Root-TAB7_XX_OXA_JQ1-v3.3-CWM3RFS.tar file.
Thanks
I was able to fix mine using instructions from a different topic, it was about the "Overcome" (images, rom or whatever was that), the file name is "The_Installation_Guide_The_Overcome_Experience.pdf" and at some point it tells you to load around 3 different files in that program, and flash them all.
After this I was able to put Cyanogen images on card and easy install them with the ClockWork mod loader.
Yeah. Do not panic if the video is hosed. I also got strange disruptions when following 'some online guides'.
The closest guide I have found that works to upgrade from Stock reliably, is the process mentioned on https://goo.im/devs/cmwiki/p1/p1c/ (Verizon CDMA P1000). I only have the CDMA version, not the SIM card version.
This is undergoing major revisions. I hope. I can say there are two (2) Verizon SCH-I800 recovery images available now. One that works is the ODIN image from TheCollective.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2383201
TheCollective repository http://www.theandroidcollective.org/i800/public/
I have tested this image. It works.
I recovered the device after a working 2.3.5 stock was running (from the other viable stock image) and I wanted to flash a modem.bin from heimdall. Mistake. Device locked up at 100% along with heimdall, and a forced reboot (hold power down) only gave the
PHONE - ! - COMPUTER
screen.
It would also work to restore from Download mode, with ODIN and TheCollective stock.
I have never gotten the modem working again, though.
Hi there, where can I get a superuser flashable zip for P1000? I changed from cyanogenmod to omnirom and I have lost root access.
Are you sure? I am using Omnirom and I have super user.
You mean you don't have the SuperSu or whatever icon in app tray.
Go to Settings, scroll down all the way, above "about tablet" and performance, is there a SuperSu option?

[GUIDE] Flash Official JB 4.1.2 Firmware on P6810 Wi-Fi Device
Sick and tired of Samsung ignoring the official JB 4.1.2 update for our much maligned and forgotten device?
Well, you’re in luck, this guide will effectively turn your P6800 Wi-Fi device into a P6800-GSM/3G model. We do this by changing the device partition layout and then flashing P6800 firmware with Odin.
Of course, due to hardware differences, you won’t have a working radio/modem. Also, some unneeded system apk's will need to be removed and the UI will also need some cosmetic changes etc, but it's a start.
WARNING & DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible, YOU are! You can probably forget about your warranty. This will wipe everything and increase your flash counter too !

Why do we need to flash p6800 recovery? Due to different layout partition? So if we need to go back to p6810 (through restore from backup) we need to flash p6810 recovery first?

After flash the P6800 firmware, you don't need to flash any custom recovery. It's just a recommendation and also reminder to flash stuff for P6800. You need it if you wish to flash eRobot ROM.
TO RETURN TO P6810 PARTITIONS & FIRMWARE
Follow the above steps but substitute Step #3
A - P6810_WIFI_16G.pit + bodivas P6810 JB ROM .tar file + then flash P6810 CWM/TWRP Recovery & FULL nandroid restore
To be clearer: If you need to go back,
1. Flash P6810 PIT + bodivas ROM in Odin
2. Let ROM boot
3. Flash P6810 CWM/TWRP Recovery in Odin and then FULL restore the ICS Nandroid
Don't forget to keep the Nandroid backup on your external sdcard, internal will get wiped !

I don't know, but haven't found a way with PC Odin yet. Still a few things to try later on using old ICS 4.0.4 bootloader etc.

I think you're in the wrong thread.......
Anyway, I tested all OK on bodivas stock ROM. Had no issues the past day. Backup your data and save off device. Reflash his stock ROM (no multi-windows) and try again.
BTW, I have managed to revert to ICS 4.0.4 without using nandroid. :highfive:
I'll post the method here later today. I have some business today.
From now on, I'll be using eRobot, but must make a flashable script to uninstall some non-related feartures and apk's etc. I'll even attempt later on to modify some apks to get rid of some unneeded options in settings menu.

After flashing JB, I don't think flashing CWM or TWRP is working properly. I get successful flash of P6800 TWRP, but fails to boot into recovery volume up + power. Flashing the P6810 TWRP recovery partly works, but does not show the internal sdcard. Maybe something to do with bootloader still showing P6810 ?
Will take a look later.

BUG - Can't quite get any custom recovery flashed properly on JB
Edit: Just flash TWRP 2.6.1.0 in Odin [PDA]. Done
In TWRP recovery:
Internal sdcard = emmc
External sdcard = sdcard
My P6810 IS NOW running eRobot ROM + SkyHigh kernel :
EDIT : STILL A FLAW IN THE "RECOVBERY PROCESS". SOME RECOVERIES STILL FAIL TO FLASH AND OTHERS DON'T MOUNT /RECOGNISE ALL PARTITONS. THE TWRP 6.1.0 DOES NOT BACK UP THE PRELOAD PARTTION, WHICH IS A REQUIREMENT TO RESTORE CORRECTLY.
Running erobot rom and skyhigh kernel on my P6810 too!
I followed your instruction and all was fine! All is working well, I'll report more feedback in the next days ...
Thanks UpInTheAir
One more thing: from your screen shot you are using tablet UI while erobot has phablet UI ... I tried to switch to tablet UI changing lcd density but touchwiz continues to crash ... how did you get it working?
And again ... is there the possibility to have the multi window feature as in bodivas rom?

I was running eRobot v1 , Phablet is v2.3P. I really do suggest a full wipe immediately prior to flash (if ROM doesn't automatically). I haven't flashed v2.3P yet, but have a read through the eRobot thread on the development section. Please let me know what you find out. Edit: jhust flashed it, working ok
http://erobotrom.blogspot.com/p/erobot-rom-for-g-tab-77.html?m=1
I have permission from eRobot to modify and release his ROM at XDA. I was going to do tablet UI, but now doing Phablet instead. I am working on a Aroma installer version to flash in custom recovery. As per my previous post, custom recoveries aren't working 100% with preload not being able to backup or restored. We need this for 4.1.2.
Although the guide works flawlessly, the end useability is not quite there with custom recovery not quite working as expected.
If I can't get this working easily for user simplicity, the eRobot ROM will be built/modded for P6810 partitions instead. So the only requirement will be flashing bodivas base ROM and custom P6810 recovery from daniel_hk TWRP 6.0.0.0. I have some family time today, but hopefully have something out for "P6800" partitioned or original P6810 partition device soon.
Edit: Just Flashed "version 1" of eRobot 2.3P SkyHigh Edition with new Aroma 2.70RC2 installer. Just got to config for a lot more Aroma options before first release. Flashing and testing takes time, just one little error can give a big headache ! Just look out in the development thread for a "new" ROM for the P6810 in a few days time. If a FULL wipe is done (preload, system, data, dalvik), there are no flash issues. Maybe I'll look at adding a few more system mods (time permitting) later on, wait and see.......

This appeared to work well for me. Then I got to the screen where there is the, "Reset perangkat" dialog button (and a back button on the bottom left). I've tried over and over to tap either button, but my touchscreen is apparently non-responsive (and the screen times out and goes to sleep as you're touching it - so apparently it's not detecting any input). I tried reflashing again, and there was no change. The screen orientation automatically rotates, the volume buttons work, the power button works - it's just that the touch screen is non responsive. I am going to try downloading a different 4.1.2 ROM from SamMobile (but their servers are slow so it'll be awhile).
Any other ideas?

Quite strange, I've lost count the times I've used this method and not come across this.
If you get stuck at the reset screen again, maybe you could try:
1. Disconnect USB cable
2. Enter stock recovery: factory reset (hold volume UP + power until enter recovery)
3. Reboot and wait 5-10 mins for first boot
If still not working, try flash again same full firmware package (same CSC), because it won't/shouldn't ask for the reset if already flashed (didn't ask again for me anyway)

You can use the t810 root. The only issue is that your stock recovery will say t810. Irrelevant if you install twrp or just root with twrp itself.

Nope. You cannot use this method.
Hi,everyone!
Please advise would CF-Autoroot and TWRP work on SM-T815Y?
Thanks, However I think I am going to hold off until there is a root specifically for the t817t on 5.1.1 AOG8 cause I've read that a lot of people who flash the t810 root have bootloop issues, cannot use 4G LTE and cant go back to the stock t817.

The ONLY people having bootloop issues are the ones that don't read instructions properly!
Flashing a t810 kernel on an LTE device will lose LTE connectivity.
There won't be a specific root for T817T as it's the same as the t815.

RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING boot loop
Dear all,
Reeally appricite your effort getting full control of our tab S2!
Clearly I have done something very wrong while rooting, and updating my S2 from LL 5.0.2; I'm now at the point where my 810 tab are in a "endless" booting loop what the top-right corner of the boot screen are showing "RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING", looks like there is an attempt to boot, but it don't succeed.
Before I go further and make things even worse I wonder if you have hints or ideas that can help me get the tab s2 running andirod agian? (please...)
This is what I did:
from factory state wiht 5.0.2 on smt810:
I rooted : smt810_cf_autoroot.tar - booted -root working
I twrp - t810_twrp_LL_5.0.2.tar - booting - all working
