Google Navigation phone overheating - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was driving this weekend using Google maps navigation (stock v4.2.2) and my phone started to shutdown after 45 mins. I tried to turn it back on and it just shutdown back down. Then I noticed that the back of the phone was quite hot. The phone was not charging and I only had GPS navigation and music streaming from Google Music. This was the first time I came across this issue.
Have any of you had your phone overheat while using the GPS navigation?

I suspect that some of the cheap car chargers may drive too many amps into people's phones. I've seen this with my old HTC G2 - it gets hot when plugged into my car charger, and it's doing power-hungry things like running the GPS.

This happend to my old SGSI when using both Google Maps to navigate and streaming music with Spotify when I worked as a Taxi driver. The screen brightness was also set to maximum, which eventually resulted in a permanently burnt in notification bar. I always had the phone connected to a charge but it did not have enough power to keep the phone charged. The battery level would go slowly down.
Every now and then -every few days- the phone would get warm and crash. Removing the battery for a few seconds always resolved the problem.
Try to shut down other apps and background services and see if that helps. You could also put some music onto you sd card and turn of the data connection! Make sure that you have inputted and downloaded you destination in Google maps first Google Maps works fine for me with just gps and no data.

Thanks for the tips... I wish the Nexus 4 had a sd card slot
The thing is that I was not charging my phone at that time. Also my current car charger is a motorola charger that I have been using since the Nexus One days.

Google Maps with the screen on 100pct brightness always gets my phone pretty hot. I usually either turn the screen off or down.

You can turn the screen off and it still announces turns and instructions. Just turn out on when you need it should keep temperature down

Chargers don't "push" current, the phone's load draws it.

Using iGO with battery charger problems

Dear Friends,
I am having the following issue: iGO works great, but when I use the car charger after approximately 30-40 minutes the phone (diamond) gets very hot and it stops charging the battery. Than I have to wait for about 20-30 minutes and I can charge. I did not go more far.
At the beginning I was thinking maybe it gets too much sun, but not, I tried it in a bad weather too-when no sun at all. Does anyone have the same problem-and maybe knows the solution?
Thank you in advance
Hi morbon.. When you use the GPS the phone will naturally get hot and on top of that when you charge the phone while using the GPS, it will get hotter. The phone automatically disables charging when the it gets too hot to stay on the safe side. If you use the GPS alot, I would recommend getting one of those vent holders and turn on the cool air while using it so it stays cool. So dont worry, this is only a security measure and it happens on all our phones.

Automation screen on off help

So i placed my galaxy tab 7 in the dash of 370z.. its amazing i love it and i would never ever switch away from it. the only issue that im currently having is that when i turn the car on the tab gets power for a quick second then loses power while the car is turning over then has power again. Since the car gets that power for that quick second the screen turns on then quickly turns back off (i use screen off util) and doesnt come back when car is on. i need to find a way to make sure the screen is on when the car is on and the tab has power
Can't you wake the tab up manually

Is there some sort of ROM or app that allows front soft keys for wake functions

Not that I know of

Im Sure there is.
BOCA or unofficial beta cm7 port should have these options
Ill also look, as my car radio was stolen last week, and I might need the tab in there now
im trying to avoid manually having to wake because well frankly that would be annoying... i can see it come on but when i crank i need it to not shut off.. i was hoping if i could find a delay on the screen shut off maybe
If it's not already, if you wired the outlet your charger is plugged into so it is hot at all times it might not do what it's doing, but it still might because when you crank the car the battery voltage may drop below the point that the charger cuts out. In that case a large capacitor like many use on big stereo systems may solve your problem; just ask your local stereo shop about them.

[Q] Nexus 7-Horizontal lines & Static Noise

I was using my Nexus 7, browsing the web, and the battery dies, so i go and get my charger, plug it into a USB extender, and then into the Wall Charger, it began to charge then when i unpluged it by mistake it made a static noise, (like the old TV snow, that static-y noise, I dont know if it came from the speakers or not though) and on the screen was grey(ish) horizontal lines, & really tiny colorful horizontal lines, that were moving up and down. Now it will not charge or turn on even if pluged in via the wall charger. Help?
Horizontal lines in portrait mode? I've been getting that on my Nexus 7 all the time , specially when the battery was lot or I was surfing the internet. Unplugged, discharging or low battery charging. I will try and get a replacement for dead pixels though.
Mine didn't make any noise though :/
Is it anything like this problem I've been having? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1973953

Sweet, I'm hoping the static I have gets fixed by the update!!
EDIT: after mashing the update key a few more times and getting the OTA, this problem seems to have gone away.
Same thing happened to me tonight.
Heard the low battery sound thought it was gnex but realized I had it charging . Went to see nexus 7 and saw it was at 0 so quickly plugged in charger but was too late. When I plugged in charged it was dark screen but then became slightly lit. When I tried to turn on it wouldn't and after holding power button it would bring about the static screen. I eventually got to Google screen and thought it was fixed. I thought it would boot normally and charge, when I glanced at it a minute later saw it was showing static.
Made a video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=72bU5-0IsM4&feature=youtube_gdata_player
This was made after reaching Google screen second time and I was going to stop recording because it booted normally and no static appeared. However at 49 seconds you will see that it does. After restarting again and then booting normally I shut it off before trying to get the static again and it charged normally and now its at 73% charged and running fine. I was scared tho but from what I searched it seems to happen when battery dies out

[Q] Nexus 7 3G version Battery dead

Hi yall.
I had just imported a 3G N7 from the States (directly from Google play store), and it took almost 3 weeks to get here in Canberra.
At first place, I couldn't turn it on given the battery was dead. Then I tried many ways to power it up, say, changing chargers & cables, forcing re-open it by pressing 3 buttons simultaneously, or connecting it to my PC etc.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to work. And all it shows is (flicking) whole black screen without the battery charging sign.
How can I bring it back to life? Thanks in advance!
Charge for a couple hours.
Hold down power for 30-45 secs. I know it sounds weird but it works.

[Q] Boot phone on plug in?

Looking to turn my old S4 into a car HUD (mostly just for GPS and Pandora). Plan is to hardwire the charging cable in behind the stereo so it's tied to the ignition (won't drain battery when the car is off). The only major roadblock is forcing the phone to boot up when it receives power. Is there a ROM with this functionality built in or a setting I can change? I've seen a number of people looking to fix glitches that were causing this, but nothing that does this intentionally.
Thanks!
Doesn't the s4 boot up when you put the battery back in after it's taken out? That may be a clue.
