I want to hear from those who got their hands on the phone as soon as it came out. Have you guys noticed any degrading performance over the updates Google has pushed out? Before I updated, my phone ran games like Vice City like a charm. Now, on 4.2.2, it seems like some performance has been lost. It may not matter to some, but the gaming performance means a lot to me. The random frame dips on games just kills the experience. Have any of you noticed a performance hit? Also, has anyone found a way to make games run smoother? I've tried Cyanognemod 10.1 Nightly and AOKP V3, but neither seemed to push out the performance standard Jelly Bean does. Faux123's kernel, after overclocking, didn't seem to help either.
I haven't noticed any difference i still run GTA 3 and vice city on maximum setting smoothly and i havent noticed any drop in frame rates
I have never played GTA on Nexus 4. But I did play Asphalt 7, NFS MW on both 4.2.1 and 4.2.2 Franco Kernel. Feel no difference.
hence, give FrancoKernel a try?
It's all in the governor.
Alright. What governor are you guys using? I'll give Franco's kernel a shot, but I would rather stick with Faux's after paying for his app and learning how to use it. I have it set up for maximum performance, but it just seems the games aren't running the way they should. For example, I notice that Need for Speed Most Wanted tends to have a large frame dip when nearing other vehicles. It's not something immediately noticeable, but I can see that it almost does a slow motion sort of thing at moments. Also, with Vice City; With everything maxed out, it'll run fine with the camera directly behind the car, or when Vince is running. But should I need to maybe make a slight turn or a large one, the frames drop unbearably.
Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aatt.fpsm app to check the ingame fps.And btw with gta vc on stock 4.2.2 with franko kernel,i get 25-30 fps.

Hello,
I have bought my nexus 7 3G 32GB about one month ago.And tried to play many games, all games ran pretty smooth without lagg except these:
nova3,nfs:mw...Also I didnt get any special effects like fire on buildings in nova, however asphalt 7 ran very smooth no lagg at all, altough many people said that it's laggy. So how could i optimize my gaming performance?I've tried trinity kernel and m-kernel.OCed at 1.7ghz and 700mhz didnt helped in games... All what i felt performance increase was only in benchmark scores.Games ran almost same as before flashing kernels...What kernel should i use only for best performance ,i dont really care about battery. And what other optimizations should i do to get all these effects in games and reduce lag?
Hi man i played those games on my nexus but havent ur problem ...r u sure it is for ur kernel?
Yes.I'm sure.By the way you mean that you don't get any lagg on nova 3 or nfs mw?
I'm a Trinity fan, but on my 7 I actually found faux kernel to provide me the smoothest gameplay.I didn't start with much lag in the first place though, biggest thing for me is on dead trigger with graphics set to ultra high there would be a stutter at times when blasting zombies with my shotgun. I could just turn graphics down, but then the zombies don't get thrown backwards which looks cool.
Faux smoothed it out a bit, though I've never had a kernel make a significant difference on any device. NFS MW plays smooth for me, as it did with the stock kernel. Haven't downloaded nova 3 on the 7 yet.

trinty is not that good, I use franco and games play withoud lag. When I played GTA Vice City with trinty kernel, my nexus got very hot and than shutted down. With franco it just stays pretty cool.
and however, try to play that same game with some different kernels (m-kernel or faux), or put the govenor to performance and than try it again (but that really sucks battery). it is strange, those games play smoothly on my nexus 7 with franco.
How about nova 3?Is it smooth on franco or faux kernels?
Nova 3 was poor for me too. Played better on my dual core EVO 3d....checkout this post for more discussion on it...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2085452

Hey,
Just wondering if its only me, I've tried PA 4.3 JSS and JWR, really choppy and slow.
So i restored the JWR still continues super choppy, even simply going through the pages of the app drawer lags, Antutu gets me 14k results where previously on 4.2.2 i got 22k, on games like Real Racing 3 i notice much lower FPS than on 4.2.2,
I've tried with stock kernel and Franco, with small improvements with Franco but still barely unusable.
Is this situation shared with any of you using 4.3? Will it get any better?
Thanks.

I think you are the only one with this problem. I am on latest PA 3.96 and its super smooth.. Won't comment on games as I dont play much but performance, battery wise PA + franco's kernel rocks..
try clean wipe..(factory reset wipe all except internal )
Also it matters if you flash JWR kernel on a JSS rom you will face such issues, this might be a problem in your case. :good:
Its not the kernels mismatch, that I'm sure as I am aware many problems could be originated by that.
I notice the difference mostly in games since its one of the things I most use the phone for, although in the menus and general usage it still feels choppy and not smooth at all.
I have tried that, I have even restored the factory image and tried factory reset after that, all with no apparent result.

Did you measure CPU clocks for some time too so you can see if it's something about the governor/etc?

Not sure how to do that but i tested Antutu and Real Racing 3 with Performance Governor @1.5Ghz and it still didn't cut it, i currently have the same Franco kernel settings i had on 4.2.2

I think something is wrong with your device, because I´m on AOSP build with Matrix kernel and I can reach easily 22k on Antutu with no tweaks, just installing ROM and kernel. About games, I have played some and I do´t have any lag or anything related.
As someone stated before, you should try to make a factory reset and try to install an AOSP version, because it has many commits and patches that JW doesn´t have.

By measure for some time I mean to use an app like CPU spy reborn ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mirko.csr ) so it'll record CPU shifts and clock times during a reboot session. It's good to see if the governor is behaving normally, but since you won't have a reference from before I don't know if it'll be very useful.
Well, good luck with your problem, I hope you get it solved quickly. I'm a new N4 owner myself (barely 2 months) and don't much yet about the device.

I've noticed some games which do not run smoothly with 4.3, where they did with 4.2.2. I use unrooted stock, I don't benchmark because I prefer real-world usage.
I think the solution is to wait for app devs to update their software.

I guess I'll try the aosp build,I've had it in the past but steered away from it due to the locks and also slow performance.
I'll try it and report back

If you have a dedexed rom try jszaq patch from the benchmark thread. It will give roms without bionic/krait optimisations those tweaks and also it will give a huge dalvik/java improvement.
I score 21000 antutu and 8000 quadrant with it on deodexed stock jwr rom at stock speeds.
So I picked one of these up. I run the stock ROM and am using Nova Launcher. Phone is not even rooted, it's just out of the box but with nova launcher.
During GTA Vice City and Amazing Spiderman the lag is just unbelievable. I thought a phone like this could run GTA Vice City maxed out, but if I set the resolution to above 70% and visual effects to anything but low, the lag is UNBEARABLE.
I saw people running games just fine, but I just can't figure out. Help me out here?
The firmware is the XXUBMEA, it updated to that when I first started it.
You may need to look into rooting and then removing or freezing a lot of the samsung and google bloatware if you don't use it. A lot of these run in the background regardless and take up ram, reducing the available amount, which in turn will hamper the phones performance as the ram available gets low.
Standard my phone was using around 1.2-1.4gb, now that I've rooted, frozen a lot of crap, and even used greenify to stop some apps running in the background (candy crush as an example hogs 200Mb in the background), I'm now seeing around 700-800Mb ram usage and the phone runs quite well. Haven't played any games like GTA to really push it, but I'm not seeing any more lag.
Yeah GTA lag can't really be resolved
I'm on a 4.3 AOSP rom with Ktoonz kernel that has CPU + GPU overclock and I still couldn't get it smooth even when lowered to high effects and about 75% resolution.
For some reason, practically every high end game I've played lags on the i9505
Sent from my :tank:
I was shocked at the stuttering when playing Robot Unicorn attack (Excellent game https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pikpok.rua2).
Every 3-5 seconds the phone would stutter for 0.1-0.3 seconds (subjective). This did NOT happen with my i9500 Exynos.
I don't understand whats wrong. If it's a driver issue, it should be resolved by now 5 months after launch.
Can a game developer or kernel master enlighten us?

Hi guys,
first of all let me apologize for this stupid question. Personally I hate these questions too, but I have my device in service for 3 weeks, therefore I'm not able to continue with my research...
It's already a long time since I've bought my G2 (D802). Of course, the first thing what I've done > go to custom ROM ... (It's my habit since Xperia Arc S) I think that I was dissappointed of my new LG G2 even then. Games wasn't fluent and lagless as I supposed they should be. It was another good reason to go to the custom ROM. But unfortunatelly and surprisingly it was even worse. So I find another thing why is that so bad. In that time custom ROMS wasnť based on Kitkat sources (kernel), so I hoped that everything will be fine after developers merge source code. But the improvement has never become (in that form I hoped for) In that time I became reconciled that I will never play games on my G2 as smooth as on my iPad.
That's the reason why I'm looking for the best ROM for games. (I'm a heavy gamer)
So my question: Do you know any good rom for Gaming? Could you recommend me something?
I tried Mahdi. PA, Beanstalk, Slim ROM, CloudyStock, Pro, Flex, G3... But none of these ROMs is fine...
(I can't understand how can be Cloudy ROMs so popular (Nothing against Cloudyfa ) because they have too many lags in games !!! I think it's more laggier than stock...

What's the definition of "lagless" for you, and what games are you playing?
First of all, you have to realise and acknowledge that this is a smartphone. No matter what, it's still a phone and it's not made for heavy gaming. Second, you have to realise that despite the fact that many developers (ie Gameloft) has a lot of experience with games, they're too lazy too optimize them even for the most powerful chips out there. The games utilise 100% CPU speed even if they don't need it at all, and then the CPU throttles down because it's becoming too hot. Logic/10.
Thirdly, you have to realise that the ROM is not what makes the game fluid or lag-free. It's the kernel.
Since the G2 (like ALL other phones) is cooled passively (it has no fan whatsoever), it's important that it runs as cool as possible to prevent overheating and throttling.
My advice to you would be the following:
Install your favourite ROM and a kernel you can tweak heavily (gpu/cpu). A good bet would be dorimanx.
Go to kernel settings, and chance max frequency to 1.27 Ghz or around that. Change governor to performance.
Change GPU to 450 Mhz.
Try playing a game =)
I used to play Asphalt 8 back when I first got the phone and I got about 30 FPS? Anyway it was smooth as butter, and I see no real reason why you want to put a custom rom on your phone. The good 'ol days where nothing was better than custom roms are pretty much over. Stock is just fine, root it, use a custom kernel if neccessary and use xposed. Will solve it.

Of course that kernel is the most important thing in performance (because of sequencer laws, etc...), but nowadays we have no (except render) custom kernels for AOSP/ CM ROMs, so my question was focused on a ROM → I connected it to the whole... (And furthermore each ROM has own kernel. + ROM can cause lags as well)

Unfortunately these times are gone, at least I think it. There were lots of updates, which increase the performance consumption (Simply they add tons of new features and stuff, but they ,,forget" to optimize that... ) I played this game, Dead trigger 2, Dungeon Hunter 4 and even simple games like traffic racer with incredibly high count of lags (And it wasn't lags in miliseconds → not always). I thought it was because of my current ROM (Mahdi) so I tried PA and then stock based ROMs (CloudyFlex, Stock) but nearly no changes) Therefore I think it will be the same on stock ROMs too, if it's on Cloudy ROM with heavily optimized kernel, system... (Even Dorimanx kernel doesn't change anything).

Thanks for this tip, I tried something similar but with UC to 1,9 GHz and I didn't set governor to performance (My device was incredibly hot in a while with performance governor), I didn't notice any bigger changes - I expected that lower frequency will cause even more lags and I was obviously wrong. For sure I will try your advice....

I don't like the LG's design of system, and I don't like xposed → it causes higher battery consumption and it ,,eats" RAM and performance (At least on my previous device )
i have 10 xposed modules installed and i didn't notice any additional battery decrease...
as for ram, as stated many times - free ram = wasted ram...
as for the thread - "what's the best this&that" threads aren't allowed on xda
i played rr3 and csr racing on this device and didn't notice anything wrong with the framerate (stock kk v20f, rooted with dorimanx kernel on default)
Oddly enough, I haven't noticed a major change in gaming performance coming from the S4 Pro. Asphalt 8 specifically is buggy, sluggish, etc on my LG OG & G2, but I don't care for android gaming since the apps aren't optimized (too many HW configs, whereas iOS is just SGX & Ax chips).

First of all, I like to say that we lacked similar threads, so OP started an useful topic. I would have stayed with simple dual-core smartphone, but I bought G2 in November for a reason, to try new games and so on, I woudn't have bought it if I needed a phone only for texting and browsing, like many argue like this. What I observed is that, 2,3 Ghz for a phone with passive cooling is a nonsense because after few minutes of gaming it will keep running like 1,5 Ghz and lower, hell what's the use of those 4 cores if a device would burn out. I never owned an apple product, but on my colleague's 5S, they run very smooth and fast with same graphics on a dual-core, so it all goes to optimazing and not using these ridiculous frequencies. I was expecting a lot from a phone like that, sorry for a long post.
Hi, how's everyone?
When i bought my nexus 4 before like 7 months it was pretty good, and can handle heavy games like modern combat 4 and Asphalt 8 in high graphics, Now i cant even enjoy playing those games because of frames lags and stuff.
Could you please tell me what i should do? I tried to flash factory image still didn't solve thus problem.

A different ROM won't make any difference, unless it has its own kernel with some performance tweaks. Set CPU to On Demand, and GPU to Performance. Might make a difference. You could try a kernel with overclock, like AK, but you should make increases incrementally and keep an eye (or hand) on possible overheating.
If you were able to run things before, but now things are lagging with the same settings, It'll be because you've got extra crap running the background hogging resources.
I think Hells Core b57 can help u, dude. I tested this kernel w/ some heavy games and it did very well :3. But, play so many heavy games w/ that kernel can make ur battery drain very fast w/ b57 version include ur phone will be heat up @@

PARANOID ANDROID or CYANOGENMOD.
You can't go wrong with either of these ROMS
Plus you can download Franco's kernel for PA.
Under the CPU governer choose performance. This will cause all your cores to run at 1.5ghz regardless of the load on your system. Hence maximizing performance
There's a temperature throttling option in Franco kernel.
Google sets its GPU throttling at 37 Celcius. So when your phone heats up, the performance decreases.
You can actually override this default temperature so you'll get a better performance in the LONGER RUN.
Just don't crank it up too high. We don't want your phone to be extra hot.
But 37 degrees celcius is way too low when compared to other phone GPU throttling temperature.
Thanks everyone!
That really helped me.
