[UPDATE] How to get your your N4 screen repaired in Austria - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

UPDATE:
After doing some calls today and figuring things out, here's a little guide for how to get your Nexus 4 repaired in Austria after smashing your screen.
1. Since smashing/damaging your screen is not covered by warranty (except for when it destroys itself) you can skip calling LG. They're not taking the phones back. Even worse, the first LG representative told me to contact Google for the matter, which would somehow be understandable if it would be a case of warranty...but definitely not when you're willing to pay for fixing the phone. The second LG customer supporter then forwarded me to the company Mobiletouch in Vienna.
2. The people at mobiletouch are an authorized service company for LG. Fixing your phone there will not void your warranty (this was confirmed by LG and Mobiletouch). It's probably not a mistake to give them a call or send them a E-Mail before sending the phone in for repair, however it doesn't seem to be required.
So, what is it going to cost? According to mobiletouch, the screen replacement will cost you between 100-120€s which seems fair to me.
Maybe this will help someone

Hey guys,
i just broke my n4 screen (technically the glass is fine but the screen is flickering and looking weirdly washed out) and will have to send it in for repair. Not sure how this will work out in Austria. Has anyone had a similar experience and can give me some advice on how much it will cost?

Thanks, I'm more interested in the first option, especially since it might give me back the normal warranty. But yeah, if it's getting too expensive I might give it a try to fix it myself.

I'm getting it fixed here in Slovenia for 95€. If I bought it directly from the importer, that would cost me 80€ + warranty void.
http://www.vamatrade.com, the shipping costs from Austria should be miniscule...

Are you sure the screen is actually broken (if the glass is fine)? Perhaps you flashed something that set some weird screen color/gamma calibrations that's causing what you see?

Well that's what I'm finding strange as well, the screen is fine except for weird vertical lines that appear everywhere AND the resolution is definitely lower than before. Maybe it's the GPU that has taken the hit?
EDIT: or maybe the connection between screen&rest of the device...i don't get it

Yeah, I'd say GPU. Flash stock&unroot and get it warranty repaired. They should repair it if your phone has no misuse marks and hasn't been in contact with water..

Here are some pictures. What do you think? the first picture shows the strange lines that show up, and the permanent line on the very left of the screen. the second video shows the poor resolution the screen all of a sudden has....

I think it is your hardware, GPU or your screen, just in my opinion. Anyway, before you send it back to Google, you have to flash stock, unroot and lock the bootloader again. I dont know if they have repair service (receive your phone, fix it then send it back). For me, I used RMA (they sent me a phone first, then I sent my phone back to them).
Sorry for not helping you anything

So, after making quite a few calls today i updated the post on how to get your N4 fixed in austria.

Replacement Screen

Hi guys, I cracked my screen today, I was wondering which one will save me more money? ordering a new screen and fitting it my self or going down to a phone shop and get it done?
Where is the cheapest place to get a replacement screen from (in the uk)
Thanks.

I think it was user ygeller that reported he could only find two places in UK that would replace screen at £150. In which case cheaper/but possibly riskier to do it yourself.

Great, so my phone is basically a door stop untill i can get it fixed, im sure not going to try and get HTC to fix it 150 is crazy, i think i will buy a screen somewhere and do it my self, after all i did manage to mod my xbox 360 up with neon lights
Any direct links to good sites that sells screens as a low price?
Cheers.
Bump bump bump
Took it to carphonewarehouse, they charged me £40 for replacment, they said if it cost more then they would pay the difference on top of the 40, good deal eh?
40 is a pretty good deal! My digitizer was going out so I bought a new one, anyone know how hard it is to replace? I already took the phone apart and the screen is off. How do I take the digitizer off?

Very simply put it converts the screen taps from the screen into an electrical signal equivalent to a "grid reference" signal based on xy axes.

Be careful with the previous reply web link. I had a virus warning popup when I clicked on it. Don't let it happen to you.
Not that it helps you guys in the UK, but I got a screen/digitizer from a seller on eBay in the US for 89 USD.
My digitizer is cracked, but the LCD is fine it's a pain to use in this condition but it gets me by.
I will try to do the screen swap tommorow.
Just got done with the replacement. Wasn't that bad at all. I would've been done in about 20 minutes, but I had a dreaded white screen with no display that freaked me out. Then I remembered a connector not seeming to fit correctly.
Disassembled and reassembled and I am back in business.
For future reference, the bottom connector in this picture:
You need to make sure sits correctly.
Here is the auction for the screen I got from a seller in California.

I use the phone as an alarm clock.
When sounded, I took it to shut it down and I dropped into bed. When going to pick it up accidentally leaned on the screen by making some pressure and I broke it

Damn! I'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to replace, but if you don't think you can do it yourself better get someone else to do it! It will end up being cheaper than having to replace the whole phone

With most phones the screen is separate from the main board and chipsets etc. As far as I am aware usually the screen will be screwed in but not embedded into it. Though I could be wrong!!..... Just hoping to give some optimism
The screen is replaceable. You're not so lucky, man
Well, seeing this image actually hurts directly to my heart!
Anyway, search on eBay, but I don't think that there is any replacement part as the phone is completely new.
I did the same just now, except it's not the actual glass that's broken but it looks like the screen underneath. That however is completely shot, again, anybody know if it's possible to replace this?
And for those interested, pictures.

Repost, sorry
Mine's back with the service repair centre in the UK for a cracked screen and have just had my quote for repair £118.
No one else seems to have the spares.
The screen itself and surround was quoted at £78 labour £22, and the rest is for delivery.
The service centre isn't the quickest it's taken them a week from receiving the phone to give me a quote and then it's 5 days after you pay for them to fix the phone and test the software.
Luckily the insurance is paying
i can't believe!!!!!
i cracked my screen too!!
it falls down from 50 centimeters and the glass cracked in 1000 pieces!! i'll post the picture soon.
tomorrow i'm going to call the italian call center ..
Ouch!
Got my HD2 yesterday, now it has a hairline crack in the screen about 1cm long - don't know how - it's only been in a jacket pocket and car cradle.
Screen too weak?
Edit: O2 shop said it's a scratch not a crack - so much for scratch resistant glass.

[Q] Stain, but not the yellow one

hey everyone
today, 2 weeks after I purchased my Galaxy S 2, suddenly I saw a stain
I went to the lab of the store i bought the device from
they claim it's some kind of liquid which got into the screen from the speaker above the screen.
of course they can't open the screen and check what kind of material is it because it will ruin the screen.
but there is no way a liquid came in touch with my device. I watch it very carefully
last night I only played some angry birds and everything was fine
and this morning (after charging it at night while turned off) this stain showed up
does anyone familiar with the problem?
got any clue what may cause it
here are some pictures of it:

if anyone can help I'll very appreciate it. thanks
I have never seen anything like this (embedding your first two picture)
Is it possible the case you have is too tight?
The discoloration is on the inside of the screen?

the case fits fine. I bought the device with a friend and he have the same case without any strange signs on his screen
I tried to remove the screen stamp - it's not that
the touch works in the defected area
and there is no hearing problem from the ear speaker
if it is liquid, considering the way it speard
it probably happened in my pants pocket judging by the angle
but it doesnt make any sense
at the store's lab they told me if they seperate the led screen and the touch screen to check what is this stain, they can't assemble it back.
but since they dont give me warranty on the screen i'll have to pay them for new screen anyway.
any chance I can send it to samsung so they'll do the check and if it's their fault the replace will be for free?
I thought maybe some part melted into the screen, but they said every part was in it's place

That's your best bet. If something happened during assembly they'd cover the cost. If they find it's not a defect you'll probably have to pay. But I'd imagine you're still better off having it repaired by Samsung directly. Someone had their screen replaced due to breakage and it was 300 GBP just to give you some sort of reference.
I have seen moisture cause this (it does not take much) and it will normally dry/clear up albeit very slowly.
the stain keeps growing
and i'm sure i didn't add any water/moisture to it in the last 24hrs
it's so strange...
I'm having trouble contacting the local samsung here
hopefully they won't send me to the store I bought the device from
I saw a display replacement on ebay which cost 85 GBP (will loose the warranty of the other parts, not to mention ruin the whole device)
if I'll do it at the store it'll cost 220GBP
it's a hugh bet to send it to samsung. it can cost 300 GBP not including delivery
any suggestion which path should I take?
it almost sounds like the digitizer/screen sandwich is coming apart?
You are out of the store return window to just return for exchange? If there was a return period (not some shady store with missing return policies), just demand a refund, tell them it is not from water. Demand to speak with the manager.
Does your unit carry warranty from Samsung? I think the way this one works, you send it in, they evaluate it, if they admit it is their problem they will fix for free. If they say "it is water damager, user error" they will offer to fix for a fee, and you can still refuse and pay for the return sipping of your phone. So I believe most you will be out is shipping both ways.
Swapping the screen yourself may require some good skills - do you have them?
no returning after turning on a device
warranty on hardware only except screen&touch (had to sign on it when bought the device)
I dont think I have the law at my side
I guess I can only count on the manufacturer
no store here gives warranty on screen&touch
and this store was the only one which let you change the ROM without loosing warranty on hardware
the device also comes with their custom ROM and no recovery mode (so no one will steal their ROM)
Is it cancelling my warranty with samsung itself?
update:
here is a fresh picture
h++p://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/28/img20110712wa0000.jpg/
you can see it grows
and this time i used a whole white screen and found something new
you can notice there is a burn of the status bar in the corner
That is definitely a "liquid" stain. Aim next time bud. That is all
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
you have any screen protector on this? clearly some layers are coming off
sorry you are having this issue
Completely off topic, but we should be more careful about mixing words like "yellow" and "stain" in the same sentence...
also off topic but if its yellow, I'd speak to your gp bud

LCD Damaged? In need of serious help. With Picture!

Hello. I can't seem to figure out if my LCD is damaged or other component is causing this.
The basic story is I've purchased a phone from craigslist- he claims that before the update to 2.3.3 the phone was fine but afterward, the screen became all 'negative' and keep rebooting.
Well with the custom rom, I managed to stop the phone from rebooting but the display is.. well bit weird. Let the photo do the illustrations:

As you can see some when I enter setting, the display is ok but in other times the colors all become negative (if you taken a negative shot in camera you'll know what I mean.) Even the homescreen/ market and about 90% of apps show in negative.
Have anyone experienced this?
Have u tried using flashtool to get back onto stock SE 2.3.3 and see if it still happens?
Have u taken this to a service shop?

Do you reckon it's the LCD causing the problem or motherboard?
If flashing different roms hasn't worked for you, then it's leaning towards hardware issues. You could try check it up with a repair store to see what the problem is before buying the parts because you can't be too sure it's LCD or other components.
GREEN is missing, try to paste a green sheet of paper over the screen,it should correct the colors, will cost nothing
If u are going to repair it and spend a bit of money just send it in.

As above, simply taking it apart and reseating the connections might fix it.
Otherwise, enter the service menu for the X10. It has a screen test, which displays plain green/red/etc colours. You can test this way. In a hurry, link is somewhere here...

Thin Pink Line - LCD broken?

My phone has developed a thin pink line running down the screen.
I have been on holiday on an island with no phone reception for a week so I didn't take the phone, so it's been at home without being touched.
Then I get back today, play around with it for only a few hours then this happens! It seemed to come on after a reboot.
At first I thought it was because I was playing with build.prop, but after restoring a backup it was still there. It's also there on the splash screen and in recovery, AND it's in the same position when I rotate my phone, so I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue.
The point of the island story is because I was wondering if a rapid change in temperature could have something to do with it? The phone has been very cold for the week of no usage, but has been getting hot today obviously after charging and playing with it
Does anyone know what could have caused it?
And is there any way to fix it? Or should I just start looking at prices for the galaxy nexus...

I am afraid you might have to send it to hTC for LCD repair.
nevermind, wrong section
Yup. This will have to go to HTC repairs.
I see you're rooted and have BlackIce ROM installed. I'd suggest flashing Stock RUU before sending it to them. (Warranty issues)
Cause of the problem : Maybe the temperature difference, although such problems are very hard to pinpoint. Even a minor speck or particle on the circuit board can wreck havoc at times.. I've had a PC monitor gone bad due to an ant crawling inside the system. :\

a phone repair place i called quoted me over $100 as well, but maybe it's worth it in case i completely screw something up!
Why even bother with repairing it yourself.
1. Why give yourself the hassle?
2. Why go to that expense?
All HTC phones have a 2 yr warranty get a stock rom on it, get it s on'd and get it sent back.
I've sent a few phones back to HTC and one of them was a HD2 with the same issue and the turn around and service was top notch

I'm afraid that my phone only had a 1 year warranty, and this happened in the 13th month of it's life I had a long discussion with HTC about their responsibility to make sure their hardware survives for a reasonable length of time, and could they extend the warranty, but they weren't interested. So I took it to a 3rd party repair place and they fixed it up for me for $110. It's worth it in the end, the phone will sell for more than that when I upgrade to my next phone.
Thanks for all of the replies everyone!

Hi. Did it turn out to be a hardware issue or did it just need a new screen. I have the same problem on my i9505 and am intending on buying a new screen.
Thanks.
