N4 is boring - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a Nexus 4 just to play with a GOOGLE phone.. I find it quite boring. I prefer the Touchwiz of the S3 and Note 2 which I have.
Is there a mod or rom that uses ported touchwiz for the N4?
cheers

LOL.I have seen people switching to aosp from touchwiz, but never heard of anyone switching from aosp to touchwiz.
But i would like the multiwindow feature on n4.

BORING?!?!?!?!?!
You sound like a spoiled little brat saying this phone is boring, you know.
You wanna see boring???? Look at what happens after a cdma nexus phone turns two: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1171
Next time you want to complain about the most active android in development, just step away from the keyboard and take a deep breath!
Me?? This is my first ever gsm nexus while it's still the flagship. I bought my NS4G two months before the Gnex launched, so that's the only time I've had with the newest nexus until now. It looks to me like someone needs to step back and appreciate what they have, since most people will never experience development anywhere near the scale we currently are!!

I understand where you are coming from, all aosp can be boring, but nexus devices are like an infinite road of excitement if you have time, learn to develop android! Make a kernel, make it beast and then give back to the communities. You have a note 2 and an s3??? THEN YOU PORT IT!!! You have two devices to base the functionality on.... I love my nexus s 4g but it was boring, I got an s3 and it has cm10 on it. Go figure.
In front of a live studio audience

Seriously, its a failed in your part. You bought a pure android Nexus device so you don't have Touchwiz bloat. Your best bet now is sell the N4 and buy the Note II. I don't think there is any ROM or addon that would make touchwiz for the N4.

did u research the phone before purchasing? The S3 is more consumer-friendly, u should've known switching from touchwiz to bare bones vanilla android could feel like a "downgrade".

GTFO.

Sorry don't have an answer to your question, but it seems a shame to miss out on the potential of the nexus 4 to allow you to tweak until your satisfied (even if doing that means porting touchwiz )

I love my Nexus, I'm just saying those coming from Galaxy devices might feel it's a downgrade. They lose the touchwiz functionality (which I personally do not care for) and camera features (better than Nexus).

maybe to those that just keep their phone on stock and dont care about speed (my N4 is very noticeably faster than a few of my friends gs3's and note II's) it may seem like a downgrade feature wise, but most bought nexus for the completely open environment that makes development super quick so they can use the roms that make their phone even faster and more customizable and adds many features that galaxy devices dont have. just look at ubuntu os, its going to be running much better on the nexus 4 than when it finally makes it to the gs3, and please tell me how two available different OS's is boring

Am i the only one who actually likes the stock nexus? .
Besides, it has everything you need. And if you're missing a feature there will be an app,a mod or a ROM for it.

I can kind of see where the OP is coming from. Touchwiz and Sense and MotoBlur are all additions to stock android and make it all flashy, but that's the the reason for buying a nexus. Its all about stock android and then tailoring it to suit you. I remember comparing my S2 to my mates galaxy Nexus last year and mine did seem cooler with the extra toggles on the notification screen and different app drawer and widgets...but that all got wiped away once he got all the latest software updates and I was left way behind.
I don't think I'd want to switch back from my Nexus 4 to anything else...until maybe another Nexus is announced.
ps...the multiwindow thing is the dogs. Hope google pick it up.

flip to silence the phone on touchwiz was pretty neat. i miss that

I am not a developer, I am just an end user.
I just want to download pre built roms and flash them, If I like it, I keep it and make a donation. That's it.
What I like about the N4 is the screen is bright and as sharp as the GS3. And as fast as the Note 2.
I don't LACK of microSD card slot, Crappy SIM tray - whay can't they just use a slot just like old Nokia phones. Built-in battery/unremovable back cover.
Regarding build quality, well at first glance you would think it has a premium build and looks more robust that the S3, but after using the unit for a day, I feel that is is more fragile than the S3.
I actually bought three units and planned to give the two units to my close relatives but they are going back to google unfortunately.
Perhaps I used the wrong title, it should be "Nexus 4 is crappier than S3/Note 2"
Actually with the Note 2 touchwiz, I never had to use, or should I say I have never been compelled to use third party roms as it is very good. I just rooted the damn thing, installed a few mods and that's it.
To those who just own a Nexus 4 and have never tried other phones like the GS3 or Note 2, I suggest you try them out first before flaming me.

Blasphemy !!!!
I also have an S3, Note2 and an S2.

Don't know why ppl always bashing the iPhone...for what it is it does it well..solid construction, great battery life, very good camera, tons more apps and games than android, sharp screen, and the best support (connectivity and accessories). Only downside to me is the small screen. If the iPhone 5 comes to sprint and with at least a 4 inch screen, I would trade my evo in a heartbeat. For a multimedia phone, it practically does everything well.

Sorry man but a phone that needs a rubber band around it or a special grip to get a signal doesn't fall under good construction to me. And I also hate how Jobs uses old technology and claims its revolutionary with each build. I think I hate Jobs and all his douch fallowers more than the iPhone itself. Just my 2 cents though. To each his own
Edit: and you can't really say multimedia without flash player.....
IPhone is great but you can't do much with it unless jailbroken n even then apple continues to close all exploits soon after the devs jailbreak them,

now this is what we call a fanboy....what are things you can't do when it's not jailbroken? it's no difference than saying you can't do much on android unless it's rooted. I have owned many different phones and brands through-out the 11 years I've owned a cell phone and am not biased towards any OS or manufacturer. I give props where props are due and even though I hate the people that use Apple products and worship the ground steve jobs walk on, I'd admit their iphone in many aspects are better than my evo. I already stated the positives earlier in this thread so I'm not going to repeat it again.

The problem with iPhone is iOS. Even after a JB the possibilites are far less than a stock unrooted Android. The reason most people root Android is not to enable certain things they were locked out of, but to run (and experiment with) custom roms.
Out of the box you can do tons with Android, like changing keyboards, launchers, photo galleries, handlers for sending files, widgets and tons more, that would never be possible on iOS.
iPhone + iOS is a synergistic combo that's very well designed, great usability, battery life and exceptional support from app developers and 3rd party accesories. But it is not a platform for people who like to customize their devices or need more control, and those limitations are not going away anytime soon.
Does every topic on these forums have to turn into flame fests about the iPhone or Sprints network or just general trolling?
Damn dude.

HTC announces ICS for desire HD, desire S and incredible S.

This only leaves samsung and motorola as not paying attention to their weaker phones.
HTC, LG and sony ericsson all giving most of their phones ICS.
And yet samsung wont give it to galaxy S? Well you say it's older than desire HD? Well the galaxy S plus and galaxy W are not and are actually more powerful than these HTC phones.
It's always arrogance that leads to the doom of the leader. Samsung really has to get their act straight if they want to remain android leader, there is simply no justification now for not giving ICS to their single core devices.
So, who cares?
Look around, there is plenty of ICS ROMs to install for SGS. And most of them are stable enough for daily use.
When you tasted some ROM, that is not Samsung-based, you're never going back. At least I'm not.
So, I really don't give a slightest f**k if ICS won't be official for SGS.
This is probably still the largest dev community for any of the android based phones, and although the phone is almost two years old, there is still a lot of development going on. I'm happy with my SGS, I'm quite happy with Samsung as the company itself too.

Lets not kid ourselves please. Once you get official OS you get even better ROMs.
Sure galaxy S is 2 years old but S plus isnt and doesnt even have that good ROMs so what about the S+ users?
Samsung is the most profitable android manufacturer, there is simply no excuse for this period.

As I've written: once I've tasted aosp-based ROMs, I never went back to Samsungs' one. And I'm pretty sure a large number of users here would agree with me.
p.s.
maybe RIL sw is somehow better from the start in an official ROM if a new version of OS was released, but it gets polished anyways
p.s.2
you should really have posted here
I don't care about Plus or W, at the time I bought my S the HTC choice was the Desire. It's not getting ICS either and even if it did I would still prefer SGS hardware and dev community.

And this is common in same way as the @OP's post...
But I care, i want to have a stock rom ICS than cook rom,

See for you guys its okay, for people like me with the galaxy s 4g, we are screwed. We don't have enough developers to port ics. I still hope that we will get cm7 or miui but ics, lets not gonna kid ourselves on getting that for his phone.

The choice when I bought the phone was HTC Desire or SGS. Boy am I glad I went for the SGS! Stop getting your knickers in a twist, there are plenty of ICS options. I've been running CM9 since the beginning of January with virtually no problems.
My next phone probably will be a Samsung, or whichever has the biggest development scene.

This isn't even a small argument talking about GS. But indeed the Plus version should receive ICS. Can't say that LG is better then Samsung at updating their phones, I mean sure the 2x gets it, but it's only one year old. The DHD is the only older phone getting ICS here. Nice move from HTC. I just can't say Samsung is worse than HTC at updating their phones.

Samsung is now officially worse than HTC at updating unless they update the galaxy S plus and galaxy W.
Even the $200 xperia mini is getting ICS which is from every aspect inferior to the samsung phones not getting ICS.
LG is also bringing ICS to optimus black which is the weakest phone officially supported for ICS. Ofcourse LG's ROMs actually suck but thats another story.
You guys are really too greedy. I have a SGS+ and I would love to have some custom development (CM, ICS).
We have just now a CM 7 port in work and it will take a long time to finish it, before even thinking of CM9, ICS (no graphic driver, how the hell should the ports work flawlessly)?
Our phone isn't even 1 year old, so it's just twice frustrating for us: no custom development, no official updates.

Sold my Galaxy Note, upgraded to GNexus

Reasons:
S-Pen scratches screen.
Can't use with one hand.
Display issues, banding, lines and distortions.
Heavy
Battery drains too quickly
Flimsy battery cover
ICS upgrade taking too long
Price is tanking too fast
Phone feels slower than Gnexus when it has better hardware.
TouchWiz crap
No LED notification
I sold my used phone for 550$, which is now the average selling price for brand new one. I bought at 680$ a few months back. The reason I had bought it is to act has a dual purpose device and omit buying a tablet and new phone. For that purpose, it does its job well but Samsung really cheapened out on the materials and slacking on software updates.
Got myself a brand new Galaxy Nexus for only 350$ (price error) and I find 10x better than Galaxy Note. I will never buy any other android phone if it's not from the Nexus line. I love the Nexus modern design and feel and progressive updates directly from Google. I use to have a Nexus S which was the THE phone that lured me away from my BB.
Good luck with the rest of you, I hope it brings you happiness as it did for me for a few months. Now I migrate to Nexus sub-forums.

Good Luck Mate!
I migrated from GNexus to GNote. I wouldn't give my reasons, as It would obviously start a disagreement here at the forums. I'm 10x Happier with the Note, except for the ICS part.
From My Nexus Experience,
= Use the GNexus Toolkit to Flash the ICS 4.0 Latest version (With Wallet, because the Other gave me errors). Before flashing, Make sure to get Root Access and Unlock Bootloader. If Flashing produces errors, or gives you bootloops, Erase the existing firmware using Manual Dos Commands in Fastboot mode. Relock the Bootloader after flashing, if you hate seeing the Padlock sign. For everything, Use the GNexus Toolkit, I think its a sticky in the development forum.
Have fun!
We obviously don't care about your opinion and are very happy to see go one less whiner is good for everyone else on this forum.
S-Pen scratches screen.- There's a thing called screen protectors. Use one.
Can't use with one hand.- Samsung included a one-hand operation keyboard if that's what you mean.
Display issues, banding, lines and distortions.- Supercurio is working on a fix and can be semi-fixed by setting screen mode to dynamic.
Heavy- Really? This phone is barely heavier than the iPhone 4S. You must be a weak man, work out!
Battery drains too quickly- Ahaha. yeah right
Flimsy battery cover- Flimsy or flexible? The Nexus uses the same one bro, just curved. And there are aluminum ones you can buy.
ICS upgrade taking too long- Have you tried custom roms, I mean this XDA where you get the latest and the greatest.
Price is tanking too fast- This one is the funniest one of all, the GNexus price is the one that is falling. A new GNexus on the Play Store is sold for $399 no contract, while a used N7000 will sell for $540.
Phone feels slower than Gnexus when it has better hardware.- I think you have a placebo effect going on.
TouchWiz crap- Custom roms? I wonder if you've ever used one?
Migrated from SGS2 to Note, and surely I feel this is better upgrade. The major deciding factor for me is the screen, if you need the biggest screen out there, you have to be here. Each to his own though....good luck
it'll be funny when he used Gnexus for a week and then think to himself, 'why the heck did I sell my Note? '
What's more funny is to see ppl using Xda forum yet not trying out new roms.
And I cannot see the Nexus have a better battery life than the Note. Stock wise.

Doesn't the Nexus have the same banding problems? It's the same screen tech. Anyway, most of the OP's reasons are kinda stupid. And the s-pen scratching the screen??? The screen can't be scratched by plain steel, the s-pen's plastic nub isn't gonna do a thing.

I won't because Samsung is not helping open source devs by releasing Exynos sources. Exynos is not open source friendly at the moment and the power of Android is the ability to customize your phone and install different types of roms, if i will have to wait Samsung to release an Android OS update after 6 months or live with stock based roms which are all the same apart some build.prop tweaks and deleted apps what's the point of having Android.
I'll personally send a big f**k to any new Sammie products and will wait until the next moto nexus or iPhone 6 whatever phone will be the best for me.

But that is a really good point of view! Although, I prefer to be using a S2 instead of an iPhone, due to Android.

You mean the hardware part? Well that's gonna be outadated anyway after a few months and the market needs a disruption, cores don't mean much anymore, people want something really innovative.

No source available for devs. Plus it's a f*****g shame to wait so long for official update of a FLAGSHIP phone.
You know S2 is dead and 4.2.1 will be the last version provided by CM for our device? This phone is one year and a half old and it's already dead. I will go for a nexus next time, that's for sure. I want a decent product follow up which is not the case on Sammie product and especially with their closed BS exynos chips.
When will the next Nexus generation be out?

The bet is somewhere in 2013...
I'd like to go for it, but as these guys pointed out, I'm annoyed about the closed nature of Exynos. To be honest, my ideal phone would be a nexus device but with expandable memory. Unfortunately that's the deal breaker for me.

I will stick to my galaxy s2 with my extended battery and custom rom running the latest android version possible. I dont feel the need for a new phone... yet...
If Galaxy S3 is released, I'll spend enough money to buy it, maybe the budget between 600 > 700$
sorry for my English
Xperia Z, superb device!

Until Samsung changes it's way of operating (not making their exynos projects open source) I won't be any Samsung phones. I rather go with Nexus devices. Keeping exynos closed source is a real setback for the majority of developers which in return limits the amount of innovation in roms.
S II is gonna get a lime pie update, remember that.
Now, about this s4 thing....is it 8.5 mm thick? it weights less than 116 gr? if not, sticking to S II.
I don't care for non-capacitive-buttons devices. How the hell would I know when to unlock my JB leak screen otherwise?
Actually my s2 is working pretty good for how I use it now, def need a new huge battery for the extra fun I could squeeze out of.
top comments do have a point but seriously with the active xda community, top rated forums r screaming Samsung all over.
Yea they're not so open , yea they're taking their sweet time with updates n such but seriously its a big thanks to all the devs who help n make what u have even better.
Back on track will I buy the next Sammie, depends on how much better it is... The s3 wasn't much of an improvement so I stuck with the s2 Currently running rootboxs version of jb and they're doing a great job , add to that dorimanxs kernel and u have a top of the line phone with the best options to tweak at hand for daily use/battery/performance/ no bloat what so ever.... The list goes on
Sorry for the long post I just had to get it out ^_^

Yeah wait a little time, the galaxy s3 is coming out within these few months, it's worth waiting though
sent with my homing pigeon
I will go for it !! As soon as I win the lottery :crying:
Sammie behaviour is not a deal breaker for u? Personally I won't allow the same company to f**k me twice in the a*s.
When I buy a flagship phone I want a premium support which is not the case at all.
I do expect a lot from the moto nexus. Or Sony maybe which is friendly with devs. Otherwise I'll return on the apple side waiting for THE Nexus phone,
And I don't speak about the lack of respect to the devs community after having offered them some GS2 promising a good cooperation and making me believe a bright future and a long life for this phone, they just get BS communication and disappointment. This lack of respect to the guys without who will would have this bull**** version of android made in Samsung. They have spent a lot of times to offer for free a great android version and they deserve a big thanks for all of us running their work on our s2. And now most of them are gone, some to the nexus others to Sony side due to Samsung behavior. I can not understand how a CM user may think of buying a Sammie phoen again.

[Q] LG Nexus 4 experience on Samsung Galaxy S4

Dear all,
a big fan of XDA, and feel a bit weird asking this question in here, as I feel sure thousands of others must have asked it - but I can't find a direct answer anywhere. So here goes;
I love my LG Nexus 4, especially the pure Android feel. But it has problems, though, with switching off or stalling suddenly (often during heat/cold, I've noticed), after which I have to reboot - that's described elsewhere, I believe, and not my real question.
I have now put my hands on a Galaxy S4 (I9500UBUAMDK) and made my way through my first root and install of a custom ROM (Wanam Lite). It took a while, but now works.
The feel, though, is not pure Android, as I'm used to it from the LG Nexus 4. I assume that's because it hasn't been possible to fully recreate that ROM, either because it's not possible on Samsung or because the new announced Galaxy Nexus is not yet out and broken. Is that correct, or have I just not been able to find the right custom ROM ?
quote Techhive.com article
Unfortunately, the Galaxy S4 is so new that there aren't a lot great options for the pure Google experience yet. Even the popular CyanogenMod, which is closer to stock than Samsung's TouchWiz software, is still a work in progress. The situation may change once the stock Android Galaxy S4 starts shipping.

If I am right - is it then expected that the Galaxy Nexus will be broken/rooted, and any idea how long that will take ?
Once that happens, and given that the Galaxy Nexus will only ship to the US, is it expected that my I9500 will be able to use those ROMs ?
Lots of questions, but assume for the pros, they should be fairly straight-forward. I may in the end just have to stick with my beloved Nexus 4, but if I could get the snappier Galaxy processor, I wouldn't mind it.
Apologies if I have overlooked any obvious threads with answers to the above.
Regards - Simon
If you want better CPU why dont you wait until Nexus 5 or any phone with snapdragon 800 inside?
Ex. Galaxy S4 advance, Xperia Z-ultra...

Once the Galaxy S4 GE edition comes out it will help the snapdragon version fo the device alot. There will still be issues that cant be resolved with the Exynos devices but that always been and always will be the case due to samsung lieing to the developers about releasing the proper documentation for that chip. But even then you will lose all the extra sensors in the S4,
Hi overdose1986, zelendel,
thank you for that - I guess that answers my questions in the sense that it is NOT possible to port the full Nexus experience to GS4 right now, and likely won't be for a while, even when the GS4 Nexus comes out, right ?
I likely will wait for the Nexus 5, but that's only slated until late this year or even next year, isn't it ?

That's about right, if Samsung's past track record is anything to go by. As always, nothing is definitive. IMO, if you were able to get an I9505 over an I9500, it would have helped your cause a lot more. As for the next Nexus, if Google follows their yearly update pattern, it should be out by the year end.
It's not a Nexus.. It's simply a Google Experience device. A Nexus will not have hardware buttons or removable storage. Oh and the Galaxy Nexus was Google's reference device from end of 2011.

I don't really see why this is on the nexus 4 forum but anyway the s4 like every non nexus phone will have to wait a while to get a completely smooth pure stock experience
