The Nexus 4 needs to be overclocked more! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

We need more overclocking on this b*tch!
The Qualcomm 600 owned our asses! Not to mention the damn Qualcomm 800.
2.2GHZ!
NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS WILL HAPPEN. KERNEL DEVS PLEASE.

Are you joking or...? There is absolutely no need to OC a quad core chip-set on a phone, it runs hot enough at stock values.

There is nothing this phone can't handle. Overclocking is unnecessary.

What a useless post

You're not very bright, are you?

Your phone wont survive very long if it's overclocked much more.
I agree. What a useless post.

If you would like to ask a Dev to work on this issue. I would recommend sending them a PM to see if this can happen. Closing thread

progress on 1.6 ghz overclock

I know team whiskey has made a kernel to overclock the vibrant to 1.6 ghz already but the kernel is malfunctioning. Now that it has been scrapped is there any more progress on this overclock? The mytouch 4g is beating us at 1.7 ghz!
The Hummingbird cpu doesn't have the overclocking head room that the Scorpion cpu does. I doubt there will be a kernel with a real 1.6ghz stable clock for a long time if ever.

I would probably worry more about my CPU dying prematurely due to the higher voltage and amp passing through it than the replaceable battery.
is it even necessary to have such a high overclock besides for e-bragging on a cellphone (lol) ?

Yeah.. I have to agree with the other guy, they are two diff processors.
I don't think we're going to need a 1.6 OCed. Well for me all i need is my Master's Axura.

Depends where he sees the increase. With a 1.2ghz I notice an increase in 3d frame rates. I don't think there where any gpu tweaks in the kernel, just the gpu is limited by the cpu.

Disadvantages of overclocking and why you shouldn't

1. You could literally burn out your processor making your phone unusable at all (think of RROD for phones)
2. If it crashes while writing sd or nand you could loose data such as apps, texts from your boss, videos of your baby's first steps, pictures of your girlfriend and contacts of coworkers
3. Your phone could become less tolerant of workload and have random reboots even on stock RFS at 1ghz
4. A lot more such as battery overheating and possible exploding
5. IT IS A PHONE WITH NO FANS!
NEVER GO ABOVE 1.3 GHZ OR AT BEST STAY ON 1.0 GHZ (OR 1.2) LIKE SAMSUNG PUTS YOU ON DEFAULT (FOR A REASON)...
Please share your opinion of overclocking but don't be mean to others. There arrested some benefits but I say stay under 1.3

I have run 1.3 solidly since i rooted, no bad sectors or anything. I do understand there are recommended levels but is there any indicator one can use to notice degradation?
Sectors is the nand memory, not the processor. I am just saying the risks of it. Not saying that you shouldn't, just the risks.

I think it all depends on your surroundings, in a hot car I underclock and it still gets hot, outside or in a cold room I push it to 1.4ghz and it only gets warm. Also overclocking on the charger is probably a bad idea too. Just my 2 cents
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I only overclock occasionally for bragging when a friend gets a fancy new phone or something.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Absolutely agree Marcusant. The only people I see random rebooting after release are OC'ing. My phone is superfast at 1000 Mhz and Legendary plus it barely does 1200 anyway so why blow it up?
Also aren't there galaxy s variants that come overclocked at 1.2ghz? Plus the moment was overclocked too. So I guess samsung is fine with overclocking.

I wasn't suggesting this was gonna get locked - just answering your question about what "L" in IBFL meant ....... I am in agreement about OverClocking ( and UnderVolting ) because some phones ( mine included ) don't handle OC/UV very well

exactly. the infuse uses same chipset but clocked at 1.2ghz factory.
Other than for bragging rights, overclocking a phone(especially on the epic) is almost pointless.
Its not like on a PC where you can overclock a CPU 50-100% of its original clocks to yield performance. A .3ghz overclock really get you nothing in the real world.
A year ago overclocking was marginal at best because no apps were able to utilize our phones processor but now with dual cores all around us it will be the only way we can keep up. Don't believe me? Try playing shadowgun at 1.0ghz

Removing CPU rendering and adding full gpu rendering

Alot of developers from other devices are removing CPU rendering and adding gpu rendering instead, which increases device performance. Can it be done with our device?

That's nice to know, and Wikipedia seems to suggest that we share it with the Nexus One, Desire, Droid Incredible, and EVO 4G among others. So at least it was reasonably popular.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Not quite. Nexus, Evo, Desire, Droid Incredible etc have a different chip, with an older and significantly worse GPU. Marketing names are - Adreno 200 for their GPU, and Adreno 205 for ours. Our GPU is roughly 4 times faster. We share it with the phones on the same MSM8x55/7x30 base - Desire HD/S/Z, T-Mo G2, Incredible S, and probably some more.
http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/for...no-205-and-how-does-it-compare-to-other-gpus/
Inside that link, you can find another link to the benchmark against PowerVR SGX540 in Galaxy S / iPhone 4 / etc. Our seems to be a bit faster.
Wow so why hasn't anything been done about it? Compatibility problems?

Explain to me why the T30 or the T33 is crappy.
Thanks for the hasty reply.
Curious as to how Tegra 3s are bad. Must be that "its not the latest and greatest so its crap bro" mentality that has plagued the gadget world as of late....
I think people don't like it because it's proprietary and not open..?
the T30 version will be fine. same one used in the prime I believe. the one in the 300 is the T30L. this nexus 7 will be able to be easily overclocked also once rooted. thats if it has higher clock speeds in stock kernel but disabled. like in prime when it got ICS. might even be able to use the same EzOverclock apk install like on Prime.
is this using ddr2 or ddr3 ram? infinity pad uses new ddr3 ram with larger bandwidth frequency. over a ghz. I believe. compared to prime ddr2 which was around 540MHz. 300 has ddr3 but only slightly faster than prime memory. its still around 560 MHz also. I guess this lil 7in. would be fine with ddr2.

if so, that's the same one that's in the transformer 300 model. although not as powerful/high clocked as one in prime, it will be fine. its still a very powerful chip no matter which version it is. plus tegra3 has the best multimedia capabilities.

You cant compare S3, S2 and S3 mini gpus, our device has only one core mali400 and S3 and S2 have multi core gpu.
About CPU overclock, some devs said that its dangerous to overclock novathor chipsets, but i think we could try and push frequency a little bit without raising voltage, then it should be harmless, but also it probably wouldnt be a much higher clock.

I think it cannot overheat if you dont raise voltage, if current voltage isnt enough the device will crash, reboot and nothing more. About shortening the cpu life time, im not sure, but previously i had a device that was overclocked from 1000MHz to 1500MHz with not that big voltage raising and in my case, voltage that was minimal for cpu to run on 1200 was enough for it to run on 1500. Anyways, my point is that we can try to oc our device as far as it goes with current voltage to achieve a more performance, if it doesnt go up, still ok, we tried. @op when you make that kernel, please post it so i can test it out
