I inserted an SD card into my laptop and Windows 8 asked me to choose what happens when I insert one. So I chose a program. However, the program is not working very well. How do I "unchoose" the program?
Hit Start, type Autoplay, select Settings (on the right). One of the options near the top should let you control what happens with removable media.
Removing the program would also almost certainly cause Windows to ask you again next time you tried.

Thanks. That did the trick.

I have a storage card in at all times but I actually want photos to be saved to the built-in storage rather than the card. Annoyingly, the Camera application always checks for a card and asks if I want to change the setting. Even though I always tell it I don't want to use the card, it never remembers this.
Can anyone tell me how to fix that?
Cheers!

Usually the camera only asks about storage card when you have just inserted a new card OR you have the "network" folder enabled.
Now unfortunately the camera is only capable of saving to one of two locations at any one time so:
If the view network folder is NOT enabled you will be offered:
"Main" or Storage card" and once set it will remember your choice and not ask again.
BUT with Network folder enabled and a storage card inserted you will:
be asked if you want to use "StorageCard" every time you start Camera, but in camera tools you will only be offered "Main" or "Network" even if you chose the card. It will not set to storage card even if you said you wanted this when camera started.
So, if you want to use main memory with a storage card inserted and don't want the silly question about using storage card each time, then you must disable the network folder. (Use e.g. Resco or Total Commander to do this - forget now if regular File Explorer does it)
Equally if you want to save to storage card you will also need "network" folder disabled otherwise it will save to Main memory even when you say yes to Storage Card on start up of application.
The default setting for the Network folder is disabled, so if you are having problems it is likely to have been enabled by using the likes of Resco or Total Commander.
For those that like the underlying detail:
Specifying your own location in registry=
HKLM - Software - HTC - Camera - Image - SaveFolder - xyz
where xyz is your folder name, but note this folder will be added as a subfolder of the following (in this case storage card) auto added path: /Storage Card/My Documents
Note that setting a location or name other than the defaults will result in problems viewing pictures via the application, though they can be viewed by locating and opening files individually.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image]
value of "Saveto" = 0 will save images to main memory
value of "Saveto" = 1 will save images to storage card

Mine asked about 4 times and then quit. I thought it was odd but all is good now.

Yep, that happens. Though if it just does it a few times it's more likely due to, to put it crudely, it being temperamental about recognising the SD card and storing the registry key number successfully. If it persists then it's more likely due to the network folder issue.

Thanks for the information. Here's what I've tried so far, based on it:
Installed Total Commander. Couldn't find an option to display the Network Folder.
Installed Rescoe Explorer. Enabled the Network Folder and did a soft-reset.
Before, with Network Folder disabled, the Camera preferences showed "Main Memory" or "Storage Card" as the only two options.
Now, with Network Folder enabled, the Camera options shows "Main Memory" or "Network" as the only two options.
However, the problem has not gone away. It still 'detects' the Storage Card every time I start Camera and asks if I want to use it instead of main memory. I'm using the latest HTC ROM (1.35.255.2 11/14/06).
I also installed PHM RegEdit to check the values you mentioned.
Under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Camera\Image] I have a key called "SaveFolder_0409" rather than "SaveFolder", but this has the correct value of "My Pictures".
The other key, "Save To", has the correct value of 0 for "Main Memory".
Any other ideas? (Thanks for the help so far.)

Mmmm Pesky thing because in theory if it recognises the card it should not ask each time. I had assumed you had network folder enabled already because with that enabled it definitely will ask about storage card every time. So I would reset to disable network folder. In this mode it should ask about storage card on the first occasion only and once you have chosen ot should not ask again. But as a poster above found this took four goes before it settled down.
So I can only suggest that the act of disabling the network folder again might settle it down and it will only ask you once about storage card.
I;m afraid though this type of problem is rather common and folks just find one day it's fine next day it isn't - in your case I hope the changing of settings to on and off again for network folder may reset things, can't say I'm holding my breath though.

Heheh - nope, it didn't make any difference. Maybe it's just in the design of this ROM to persistently try and persuade me that I really want to save to the Storage Card. After all, who would want to save to Main Memory when they have a Storage Card inserted? (Answer: me.)

I can't seem to find the setting for it...when I go to the camera and try the Capture Settings->Storage setting it only lists "Main Memory" and "Network".

If you have the hermes set to show the network then it will not offer the storage card as an option. Just disable network view and storage card will appear in the camera application.
Copied from an earlier post of mine:

I found a nifty little program that will change the icon your device displays when connected as USB Mass storage.
You just have to find a corresponding .ico file
Heres the program: SevenDriveIconChanger
http://www.mediafire.com/?mmkzmmt5tug
And attached is a Nexus One Windows icon and the 7changer app in a zip
You need an *.ico-file to use the IconChanger, I converted it and attached it in the ZIP-archive for maximum enjoyment.
Iconchanger? I just have an autorun.inf on the root of my SD card pointing to an icon.

Dammit, beat me to it!
Code:
[autorun]
icon=x.ico
Save as autorun.ini in /sdcard/ along with x.ico, job done.
The autorun.ini doesnt work for me.

Oh, and you have to have autorun enabled...
Edit: Also, try calling it "autorun.inf" (no quotes). Should do essentially the same thing.

Nail. Head.
It should be called autorun.inf, I made a typo
I haven't renamed it with .txt. I don't like using autorun for any kind of storage i insert into my PC so i set it to be off.
Maybe that's why it doesn't work. A Nexus One icon is not worth turning it back on.
Another option (Windows only) is USBDLM. With it you can configure icon, pre-assigned drive letter, drive/device label (as shown in explorer), and a raft load of other choices. It can run as a service and has x64 support, but requires direct editing of the .ini file (and manual installation if I remember correctly).
For example: On my desktop and notebook - Nexus One is always [N:], G1 is always [G:], backup drive is always [B:] (all with custom icons), regardless of which USB port I plug in to or what else is plugged in (those letters are never assigned to other devices).
It takes a bit of time investment up front, but is well worth it if you either need or want more configuration options for your external storage.

Wow, I haven't had a drive B in a long time. But not nearly as long as a drive A. I'd probably be a little freaked out if I set up a system like yours

It took some getting used to, but now that it's habit I actually get kinda freaked if I'm backing up to (or restoring from) something other than B:
DVD-RW=X:, Daemon-Tools=Y:, DVD-ROM=Z:
Always have to double take on other people's Windows boxes when looking for optical media. My system is definitely mine.
This is a problem I just recently started having. Whenever I plug in a usb cable to my phone, the sd card unmounts itself, in that order. If I plug in the cable and THEN insert my sd card, no problem. I've formatted my card on my PC, and also on my phone, and the setting to charge when plugged in and not to set as a disk drive is set. It seems however that the phone is ignoring that setting and mounting as a disk drive. Anyone else having this issue?
same here...look forward to hearing a solution!
thanks XDA
On the ROM I am currently running I don't have that problem.
However, I have run into it where if you set the default to be Charge Only without prompting it will ignore that. If you set it to prompt you and you select charge only then it did not happen.
So, try changing it to prompt you to select and see if that helps.

Thanks for the tip. I tired it and it didn't work unfortunately. I set the default to Charge Only without prompt and then as default with prompt. Even went do disk drive both ways and then back to charge only to see if it was a setting that needed to be reapplied. Nothing has worked yet. :/
Do you have DoubleTwist or Winamp installed. If so there is a setting in those applications called. "Enable Auto-Mount" Deselect that and you should be set. It could be another application too. These ae the only two that I have heard of it with.

I've been using Windows 8.1 on my Surface RT tablet for a few hours now and I am not too happy with what Microsoft has done already. Though there are some pretty neat improvements I am sure I'll find more things I don't like about the update.
1. I really don't need the Start button because I am already used to all the hot corners, and now it's just a waste of space on the Taskbar where I keep most Desktop apps and where I still want to have some free space for the icons to expand when apps are opened. Besides, the old Start thumbnail-button in the Task Switcher looked much better. I understand the need for it, but wish there was an option to disable the Start button in Taskbar Properties for those who really enjoy the new Windows experience.
2. The new Search Charm is less usable. I used the Search Charm to quickly search within an active app, and now you have to open a drop-down menu to select the app you are currently in every single time in order to do such a search. Not to mention that it is no longer possible to search within an app of choice from other places than the app itself.
3. I really don't like the fact that they removed Messenger app. Though it was very buggy, it was still a good companion to the Facebook-friendly People app. Why have Facebook integration there at all, if they are forcing people to use website/official FB app anyway because of the lacking chat capabilities?
4. The upper number row makes the on-screen keyboard look less aesthetically pleasing. They could've made the numbers less standing out, though I do understand the practical purpose of the number row.
5. The variable-size multitasking-split is great, but other than standard sizes should be disabled for apps that do not properly support them. You would not want to make any app window smaller if other app doesn't benefit of it.
6. I wish there was a way to uninstall Desktop Office apps and have them back when desired. I am not going to use Outlook ever and I would surely appreciate the extra storage space.
7. Though I like how they renamed Computer to This PC and added superb Skydrive integration, they made libraries less accessible by featuring local /User/ folders instead of libraries and removing them from the sidebar of Windows Explorer. How are you supposed to easily access them?
8. What I was really looking forward to seeing in the 8.1 update is the possibility to actually use microSD card from somewhere but the Desktop by adding it's locations to libraries. Microsoft has always defended the lack of local storage by saying that there is an USB port and a microSD slot, but how can you actually use the extra space? Go to Desktop every single time and browse your photos with Windows Photo Viewer Desktop app? Not to mention that I had to encrypt the SD card using another computer's Bitlocker and that I have to manually unlock the card every time my Surface restarts. I partially solved the SD card being featured in libraries problem by creating a virtual disk which I have to mount after every reboot. It works fine, but it's crazy. I am aware that this only affects Windows RT.

I have no idea what you are talking about regarding seeing SD card contents in libraries - all you have to do is right click, add to library, select library you want it to show up.
And there is one huge plus for me in the added start menu button - now you can call its context menu on a touchscreen-device and quickly open computer management, admin's powershell and so on. As I do this often while hacking - I really like it.
And the new added onscreen keyboard is great - now it has an up/down arrows and functional keys
The keyboard mode with full arrow keys and (I think) Fkeys already existed, but was hidden by default. If you went into the settings for the touch input panel you could enable it.

Sorry. What I actually meant by that was that Metro apps don't see the "libraried" content from SD card. And the indexing is disabled there too.
P.S.: I found out that 8.1 actually allows Bitlocker to automatically unlock an SD card on boot.
