TF300, Nexus7, or wait for Nexus10 to come down? - Transformer TF300T General

Newegg has the 16b TF300 refurbished for 259.
Is the TF300 still a powerful tablet? Or do people prefer the Nexus?
I really can't decide, I want to stay at or around 250.

That screen is drool worthy. Really wish it was even more underpriced at 300 instead of 400!!!
I have a Note2, so I don't think I will really want to get a 7 inch tablet which is only marginally bigger. I see some docking stations that were going for around 50, I'd probably end up picking up one of those as wells.

If money is tight for you I would not hesitate to get the tf300. Its a good tablet with plenty of power. I too have a note 2 and I have a nexus 7. The only reason I am keeping the nexus 7 is because I want to be able to install Ubuntu on it tomorrow. I really like the tf300t because of the video out, micro sd, and available keyboard dock and good internals. Its a good all around tablet for $259. Much better after the whole serial number ordeal.

I was in the same predicament. Nexus 10 looks amazing, built really well, gorgeous screen, etc. However, Im looking for something that will be more of a laptop replacement, so I think the TF300 will be the better choice since I got the dock with it. I debated getting a N10 with a bluetooth keyboard, but I really like that the TF300 locks into place with the dock AND gets extra battery life from it. So I guess it really depends what youre gonna be using it for.

Upgrade

So who plans to upgrade to the tf700
Or whatever I'm within my 30 day bestbuy return so I probably will.

Not me. Sure it would be awesome to have that powerhouse of a tablet. But the 300 does everything i need it to and more for a good price.
The problem is one of apps, not hardware. Too many phone apps not optimized for tablets. The T300 is more than good enough.
Still Charged Up
Holding my upgrade till i see some windows 8 goodness or badness in upcoming tabs.

The Infinity 700 isn't suppose to be a successor, just a more expensive and more polished version. 300 is for top specs on a budget, 700 is for top specs without a budget lol. If you have to pay extra I'd recommend just staying with the 300. With all the new events and tablets coming out not to mention Windows 8 I wouldn't recommend swapping if you already have a solid tab.
I'm my opinion the only thing the 700 has that I want is a brighter screen. Don't even really care about the resolution that much. Definitely not worth the 150 bucks more though.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium HD app
I copied my other post to give you my opinion on the TF300 VS TF700.
IMO it isn't substantial enough. Ok bear with me here, the new TF700 looks pretty cool and all but I see a few potential problems with it in the future.
Ok when Apple went from the ipad 2 to ipad 3 and the way higher res screen they knew the needed to have a CRAZY overkill GPU because not only did the ipad need to run current high demand games but also games in the future. Egypt screen off tests show how insane overkill the GPU is vs any other platform, but with the screen on benches obviously it drops a ton due to that resolution.
Here's one possible problem. You've upgraded the resolution on the TF700 but done nothing to the GPU to support the insane amount of extra pixels you've just added (and the CPU isn't even a MAJOR upgrade by any definition). So now games in the possible future may run like crap because you need to run it at such a high res without the CPU/GPU to back it.
A possible example of this is already happening is with the Acer A700, they put that 1900x1200 screen on it but have just the standard 1.3 Tegra 3 in it and it is having some serious gaming issues on games currently out. Now the only other difference between the TF700 and A700 is the TF700 is using DDR3 ram (Which I've yet to see any bench on any tablet that showed DDR3 having any major performance benefits) and the TF700 is running at a faster CPU speed (Same GPU speed). I'm not sure if the A700 problem is a software issue or the Tegra 3 simply can't drive the 1080p screen for intense 3d games but if the only difference between a game running smooth and choppy is 300mhz from the CPU then I see the TF700 having gaming issues very soon.
Also you have to remember there are almost no (Possibly no) apps that take advantage of that high of a res yet and by the time they start to be out in any number you'll probably be buying a new tablet with an 8 core CPU. But I have to admit text does look really nice on the TF700 screen.
That's just my personal feelings on it, I hope the TF700 doesn't run into the issue above but there is a reason Apple put that insane GPU in the ipad 3 and the TF700 isn't enough of an upgrade IMO. The extra battery time and IPS+ is pretty sweet but I just see that 1080P screen as a possible handicap in the near future.
Eh... not worth it.
It is like double the price for some little features I don't care too much about.
My next tablet will probably be an expensive windows 8 one with like i5 processor lol...
Not worth it to me. The tegra 3 is a disappointment to me. My tegra 2 A500 was just as smooth. I won't let the marketing hype get me again. Don't get me wrong, I love my 300, but if I would have had a 101 I probably would not have upgraded.

Lots of valid points I looked at the iPad today and was blown away by the screen. Tablets are coming so fast it's too much to keep up.
Honestly I haven't turned it on this week.

Yes, I'm also within my 30-day window so I'll be returning my TF300.
Then I'll bounce off the walls for a week till I can pick up my TF700 on the morning of July 16th!
I was waiting for the tf700 for the longest time, until I realized that I could get the tf300+dock and a new phone for the same price. So, I picked up the 300 on Tuesday and f***ing love it!

I will wait until there is a more robust gpu to support 1920x1200. The 300 is IMO a better fit for the Tegra's gpu. Especially for game emulators like N64, PSX and MAME Reloaded.
Another nice thing about the 300 is the touch response is as good as my iPad 3.
Now, if I did not play game emus and not had an iPad 3, I would probably switch.
I'm in the same camp. I just bought my tf300 and I have found it to handle everything I want very well so far. I can't see myself upgrading in the near future. I don't have the cash anyway. Haha.

I had the Prime since launch and recently decided to sell it to purchase TF700 but after waiting for it to release for sometime I started looking at TF300 and luckily I got a great deal on Tf300 + dock from a fellow XDA member, which I received today and so far I like it a lot more than Prime (except for the lack of brightness). So for now I'm going to cancel my preorder and enjoy TF300 while I wait for a newer model that is significantly different from Prime/TF300/TF700 to justify an upgrade.

what about the gorilla glass 2, i heard you don't need a screen protector if the device has gorrilla glass, and does this mean the tf300 is easy to get scratch,
i usually don't use my finger to "touch" the screen but sometimes i accidentally do, should i worry about this or just buy a screen protector?

Exchange My Nexus 7 for EEE Pad Transformer TF101- Is it worth?

Hey Guys,
I need some help here. So basically i have the all new Google Nexus 7 tablet which has just launched. So I am getting an offer to exchange my Nexus 7 for an ASUS EEE Pad Transformer TF101. I was considering switching but was not able to make the descsion, so i need help from you guys on whether switching/exchanging a Nexus 7 for a TF101 Transformer Is worth it? The Transformer has a Dual Core Tegra 2 while as the Nexus 7 has a Quad core Tegra 3. Other than that the Transformer seems better. It has a larger screen with slightly lower PPI, it has a 5 MP camer + front facing one too. It has 16GB internal + expandable storage(not sure if expandable). Build quality and battery life seems equal on both. So i want to know if the Tegra 2 is well performing on the TF101 and whether it can handle the latest games/apps and whether the TF101 lags?
Thanks all!
Do you get the keyboard or just the tablet?
The Asus Transformer is also worth taking a look coz its is bundled with features....
But finally it depends upon you that what are your needs as If you want to use it for hardcore gaming then obv. Transformer is the one to go with but if you want a pure Google experience and are GOOGLE FAN then you should stay with the Nexus 7 as it has the latest and coolest features....but in the end u r the 1 who has to make the decission as per ur needs... Happy googling

Even running at stock speed, my TF runs all the games I've played smoothly. ....But there are some newer games optimized for Tegra 3. BTW, I have both the TF and Nexus 7, and they're both awesome in their own way.

If it is new or a refurb and not coming from a private/owner seller, I say go for it. You can always buy another Nexus 7 when the price drops. If it is the owner, then maybe you could work out a temporary/trade/try it. If pre-owned does it have any problems. Maybe nothing is wrong and they are just feeling the urge ( you know, that desire for the latest toy). I have noticed that the price for the TF101 has gone up since I bought mine 7 months ago. I will probably buy the N7, due to the urge. But I had better wait for cooler weather. Just paid an electric bill that was over $300
after using a 7', the 10.01" will seem huge in comparison. I have the keyboard dock, it's cool, with the extra battery, USB & SD slot. But I rarely use it, the soft key pad is great.
Actually you should keep the Nexus coz it is new and latest tech by the Android Owner/Developer, so it is a must have tab fr Android geeks as Google has worked hard for putting all those features in such a low rate....and the second reason is that Transformer has become a bit old and isnt the latest technology although it is a good competetor but it is like an old Grand Father with less usability.
....also you will in Starting love the keyboard along but after some time you will see no use of the keyboard....also the keyboard dock after some time becom lose and while carrying both connected it slips(nt personal experience of dock)....well indeed make a good choice which suits you the best....

Even though the n7 is a Google device I will probably never buy any tablet smaller than the 10 inch. Same reason I will never buy a phone bigger than 5 inch. Just my two cents.
Sent from my Transformer using Tapatalk 2
It depends on your usage model. I have both the TF and N7, and ever since I got the N7 my TF has mostly stayed turned off. However, I don't plan to get rid of the TF either. I mainly use my tablets for browsing and watching downloaded videos. Browsing on the N7 is smooth and buttery, while on the TF it is reasonably quick but the occasional stutter happens more often and is therefore more irritating. The UI on the TF isn't as smooth, but in my experience apps work flawlessly. Videos, on the other hand, look better on the TF. It's not just the screen size, but the contrast seems better as well. The N7 is also easier to hold/handle due to it's small size.
Let me put it this way, if you primarily browse the web or stream most of your content (or love having the latest and greatest OS), stick with the N7. If you need lots of local storage (or are stuck with slow DSL), want to output content to a TV (I use mine to play emulator games with my PS3 controller), or want the optional convenience of the keyboard and the epic battery life that gives you, trade for the TF.
I would go ahead and probably swap a nexus 7 for an OG transformer.
Simple reason being...SD card support. They both got great screens but transformer is bigger at 10.1 inch. The difference between quad and dual core doesn't really bother me at this point in time. Both got 1 gig of ram also.
You can't really go wrong. I love my transformer still after almost a year. I've no intention of replacing it anytime soon.

I've got both and personally i would stick with the nexus. i really want to love the TF101, the keyboard hybrid is such a great idea but it's been a really frustrating experience - very often laggy as hell (press the recent apps key and wait 5 secs for it to respond!), too many bugs for a device that is now over a year old (crashed launcher, screen locking up, i still occasionally have the device randomly rebooting). the speakers and microphone are also awful, really poor quality.
The nexus really is the best android tablet on the market at the moment in terms of performance. but if screen size/storage space is important then maybe it's worth swapping - but i would consider another android tablet.
well the OG transformer has HDMi out while the nexus 7 doesnt

i would rather want the smaller form factor. taking around the Transformer+dock just seems too much like a laptop to me, and without the laptop power.

Nexus 10 or TF300

I really like the nexus 10 and I know this forum may be a little bias, but I am debating selling my tf300 with dock for a nexus 10.... thoughts/opinions welcome!
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Depends on what you really need. I had the infinity and the nexus 10 is miles ahead of it in my opinion.
300 pros:
-Keyboard dock with extended battery
-Expandable storage
-Insanely fast charging times
Cons:
-Slow I/o
-Rear speaker
-Tegra 3 (if you want to count this..)
Nexus 10 pros:
-Screen
-Battery (not comparing it to the Asus+dock)
-Front speakers
-Insanely fast
Cons:
-Slow battery charging (6 hours on full)
-Some games run slow due to the amount of pixels to push plus not yet optimized for the N10.
-No expandable storage
In the end it boils down to what you need, but I love my N10 and am not sugar coating it in any way. I tried the tf300 first, returned that for a 700. Decided I'd compare it to a note 10.1 and returned both and got the N10.

Define issue with web browsing? Do you mean laginess or sluggidhness? If so the n10 has none. It loads web sites very fast and has no touch or input lag via on screen keyboard.

I'll let you know. I currently use the TF300 (stock), but am annoyed with the sluggishness concerning web browsing, e-mail, etc. My Nexus 10 is coming tomorrow. Hopefully it will be better.
Although I must say that I was reading about the Boat Browser somewhere on these XDA forums, and I had never heard of this browser before. I installed it a couple of days ago and it definitely improves the browsing experience on the TF300. Give it a try.

Take this for what its worth....I am a geek and have had 5 different tablets over the past few years. The loved my tf101 w dock...I absolutely loved my transformer . I skipped the prime, my tf101 was still rockin....my transformer died and I saved up the money for the infinity tf700 with dock. I absolutely hated it. It was like there was always something slowing it down and it made me think I just had a bad unit. Did some research and found out that after the prime Asus had a bit of an io issue with the memory , the infinity inherited the issue.
Got my nexus on Thursday and I love it like I loved my transformer compared to a gtab ....the difference between the nexus and the infinity are like daylight and dark. I also have to say its really badass having aosp in a perfect state...no cm or akop issues....love cm love akop but you all know what I mean. My point is...I love this tab compared to the infinity...screen is beautiful , proc is next gen, and jb4.2 is smooth as butter on this device...so many little things cleaned up, this may be the best android version yet.

If storage is your main concern, stick with the TF300, or better yet upgrade to the TF700. If it isn't, upgrade to Nexus 10. I came from a TF700 and the difference is staggering. Screen is much nicer, sound is much louder (and stereo placement!!!).
I've also owned the original Transformer, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (still one of best tablet designs hands down), the Prime and only the GT10.1 comes close to the Nexus 10 in terms of build quality (I wonder why ).
I'd recommend the TF300 over the TF700 for a few reasons, and neither over the N10.
Why the TF300 over the 700? It's less expensive, it's far more comfortable to use for long periods thanks to the not-sexy but also not-stupid plastic construction, more resistant to wear and abuse as a result, and it's not trying to whip a Tegra 3 into running 1080p resolution it is not suited for.

I'm selling my TF300 today on eBay. I put a couple of other TF300s on my watch list just to see what they were going for. It looks like the tablet is going for the low to mid $200's. I don't know about the keyboard as I don't have one so didn't put it on the watch list. Also, if you decide to sell yours before Monday, eBay is doing a deal where if you sell an item through the eBay mobile app, you can sell it for free.
I played with the Nexus 10 for about an hour or so this morning. My initial impressions are that it is very zippy compared to the TF300. I remember first getting the TF300 and turning it on. All my apps starting downloading in the background automatically and while they were downloading and installing, the TF300 got really slow and laggy. With the Nexus 10, it was doing all that downloading and installing in the background and it was still silky smooth.
Overall, it's a much better device. The screen is obviously sharper. It is very quick to switch screens, cycle through apps, etc. If there's any lag, I couldn't perceive it. Browsing with the Boat and Chrome browsers is definitely zippier. When you scroll down a page, especially one with pictures, you can tell it just scrolls much more smoothly. I never saw that annoying "waiting for the browser to respond" which I normally saw at least once or twice per hour on the TF300. Anyway, that's all I've really done with it. I only use it for browsing and e-mail (I don't game on tablets), and for those purposes it is definitely a nicer, smoother machine than the TF300- which should be expected for its price and the advance in technology over the older device.
Stay away from Asus and the Transformer line. I'm telling you. They don't know how to write software, and they don't support their devices. I gladly sold my TF201 for the N10 and it was the best decision I've made. You've been warned.
I had the TF700 and was very disappointed. The i/o power just wasn't there. Most noticeable on web browsing - major lag. I sold it and so far I am quite happy with the Nexus 10 performance.
I had a TF700T / Infinity for close to 2 months -- just returned it this morning to Best Buy (reward zone silver -- 60 days to decide). I went back and forth on this a lot before returning it. My Infinity and dock didn't have any of the build issues that some have described -- no creaking, no screen lift, etc. The overall build seemed excellent, and overall the Infinity looks and feels like an incredible premium device. I also really liked the expandable storage and the extra battery power in the dock, and it really has a great display. When it worked, it was sweet -- but I ran into frequent lags, browser freeze-ups, slow app updates and file transfers, etc. I knew it was possible to unlock, root and flash a custom ROM to get better performance -- but I really didn't want to HAVE to do that just to make the device usable, especially since the combination of tablet and dock cost me about $650.
Reading through the TF700 sub forums, it seemed that about half the users had good experience using NvFlash and custom ROMs, but a significant number of folks reported frozen devices, boot loops, etc -- more than I'm used to seeing in most XDA sub forums. It seems to me that the device really wasn't intended to be easily flashable -- and easily recoverable in the event of issues. If I'm going to be flashing custom ROMs to my tablet, I'd rather it be a device sold with this in mind. Having used a Nexus phone (Galaxy Nexus) for the past year, I can attest to the fact that it's virtually impossible to brick this beyond the ability to wipe and start over. I appreciate this about Nexus devices.
I wish the Nexus 10 had expandable memory, and it would be nice if a pogo pin based charger option would be sold soon. Despite this, everything I read convinced me to return my Infinity today and order a Nexus 10.
Well it seems pretty unanimous for the nexus 10, as expected!!! I took the first steps and sold my tf300, now just trying to sell the keyboard dock. I am stoked about getting the nexus 10. Cant wait for it to be back in stock... thanks again for all the great info and personal experience!

A friend of mine has a near mint tf101 barely used for 200 or should I get a nexus 7. Opinions? Don't know if his is 16 or 32 forgot to ask.

Do you need a 10'' display?
If NOT go for the Nexus 7
I can't live without the dock, its battery life and USB ports.
I agree completely.
Check out a 7" tab vs a 10" tab and see which you like better. The N7 has much better specs, but my TF101 is awesome and is no slouch with its dual core processor.

As others have pointed out, you have to decide what's important. I have both. They both have their advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I wouldn't spend $200 on a used tablet with old technology. For awhile, my TF was collecting dust and I was using my Nexus 7 90% of the time. Then last month I installed EOS 4 JB on my TF, and I've been using that one quite a bit more. It really did breathe new life into the old tablet.
The tf101s price has barely dropped because its so incredibly useful. Windows based their future on copying the form factor without the extra battery in the dock. It may not be super powerful, but its not meant to replace a gaming or video editing rig. Its as powerful as a portable computer needs to be.

Agree with what everyone says about how good the TF101 is. Once you have the dock its unbelievably handy.
That said I use my Nexus 7 more because for me the smaller size is so much handier for many of the things I'd use a tablet.
OTOH if you really need a small computer (think netbook) the TF101 fits that bill much better than a Windows netbook depending on exactly what you want that small computer to do.

I agree with Just Lou. I also have both a N7 and a TF101, and since I installed EOS4 on thr TF, I find myself using it again. It's like a new tablet now!
What I really like about the TF is the docking station, and if you get one, get the dock as well. Yes, yes, I know our N7 can also use an external keyb etc., but it's not the same.
This being said, if you buy only one tablet, I'd go for the N7, because that's the one you will take everywhere. Slip it into your (large) pocket and ride the train, or mount it in your car as a GPS that you can read books on while waiting for your wife to finish shopping....
I have both and like others said, it defends what your needs are which one is better.
Besides the obvious like size, keyboard dock and battery life there is one thing in particular that makes me keep the Transformer around and that is HDMI out. The Nexus 7 doesn't support video out in any way so if that is essential there really is only one choice.
Apart from the lack of an MHL port I really like the Nexus 7 for its one-hand friendly size. It's great for reading news or e-books and it's a snappy performer.
Get both or get a Nexus 7
Have both too, and after the novelty wore off on the newer N7 I am back using my (dockless) TF most of the time. In my usage mode, at least, I don't see any performance differences between the two with EOS 3 and IMO even better yet the more recent builds of EOS 4 on the TF. I don't really do much "real" gaming, though, nor do I bring a tablet with me out of the house much (I thought I would when I got the N7, but not yet). For couch surfing and stuff, I do prefer the 10".
Actually quite amazed at how well the TF is holding up.
That said I'd have to think twice before spending $200 on a used, older tablet. But, if I had to get rid of one of my tablets, and you asked me right now, I'd keep my TF.
N7 does not have an external micro-SD slot or HDMI. Therefore, I'll be keeping my TF awhile until something better comes out.

Thinking of returning my tf300...

Okay, so a little over a week, and I'm thinking of returning this, and getting a note 10.1.
Sounds is a little quiet. Word processing isn't that great, considering it's got is own keyboard dock. There is some keyboard lag.
I love the quick charging, touchpad though.
Biggest problem is the flex. This tablet creaks and flexes. Makes me a little worried about durability. Any thoughts and input would be welcomed.

I personally have a tf300, and I work at Best Buy where I have sold dozens of them (many with docks). Our display model goes through ALOT of abuse with our customers, kids, and my co-workers who don't know how to use it, or set the device in it. It still works perfectly fine, and has no problems. I can vouch for the durability of the tablet and its dock. I really think this is the one of the best tablets. I am also familiar with the Note. Its expensive, but its another favorite at Best Buy. One of the most advanced tabs we sell. No dock though.
Ended up returning it. Bought a note from Costco for $430.
Hopefully the next generation of transformer has its own " office" suite that works flawless. Also, reading the forums has me thinking that I shouldn't have updated to jellybean out of the box. The note is just much " sturdier" , no flex.

I just don't see $130 worth of difference between it and the Asus though. I've only got $359 invested in my tab AND dock and it's nice. I have no idea what you're talking about dock keyboard lag either. I've used mine a bunch and never once experienced any lag.
When it all boils down to it, all that matters is that you are happy with it though.

No lag in the stock note app, but in Polaris, kingsoft, and quick office pro. I think that is on the edge of being perfect, next version I will consider.

Yeah but that dock is a huge PLUS. I love mine. The added battery life is nice too.

Samsung take forever to release updates (it took them over 3 months to get Jelly Bean on the Note 10.1 when the TF300 already had it).
The Note 10.1 also just doesn't feel as premium compared to the TF300.
The only real benefits I can see that the Note 10.1 has are: Audio, Faster Processor and an extra 1GB of RAM.

I try not to root my tablets, only my phones. I lost a couple of documents while typing them. Kind of put me off, but the killer is the weight balance and flex. Never reallly felt comfortable holding it wth one hand. Also, for pure speed, I would have bought an n10. I did enjoy the fast charging and extended battery with the dock, not to mention the touchpad.
The note definitely has a more premium feel in hand, aspecially the balance and glass surface. Resolution ist as good though.

you can wait what other samsung tablets get release this year
samsung takes it time to update but so does asus they might see 4.2 before us
Asus are generally quick with updates in my opinion. The transformer TF300 was one of the first devices (outside of the nexus devices) to receive JB if i'm not mistaken

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
They are already porting 4.2.1...It's easy because the nexus 7 is the TF300T minus sd card and dock(7 inch screen).

I really do think that Asus has something here. I love the galaxy note as well. If I could basically take the camera and dock from the Asus and merge it with the note, I would have a perfect tablet.
Also a dedicated word processing app that works flawless with no chance of data loss.

- Well, back plastic of our tf300 just a little better than the note 10.1 but users will buy a case anyway so that is not a a bif problem , i think.
- 10.1 runs slowly on stock rom. Same thing happen to our tf300. Stock rom on our tablet is [email protected] ( can't even load webpages normally)
- camera, i believe most users don't usually use their tab to take pics
==> for $100 more , note 10.1 have better processor, 2gb ram, s-pen, better display. I think note 10.1 is better choice if you have money to buy one. Or even buy an ipad 3, which is very good for daily use.
p/s: i bought my tab from craiglist for $230 and for that amount of money, i have nothing to complain about. But if i bought this tab with full price, i will regret for sure.

I disagree on the back. The note 2 has way less flex but isn't as grippy.
Agree on the camera, I rarely use them.
The display on the tf300 kicks the crap on the note resolution wise, but I love using the s pen. It's a wash, cause the screen (gorilla glass) makes me trust the Note more.
As far as cases, almost impossible to buy a tf300 case without going online, I went the lazy route and for it from Best buy for the note.
All of these could have been avoided maybe by buying the 700 but price wise, it just brought me back to the Note. Do miss the usb drive though.
