Hello,
I was wondering if it was possible to remove the power off option on the lock screen.
I believe that it is a good way to ensure that the phone does not get turned off when stolen, which could make recovering/tracking it much easier.
Imagine if someone stole your phone and you have an app like find my droid on it, if the phone was turned off, then it would be a problem, in terms of finding it, but if it was on and unable to be turned off (if it was on the lockscreen, with a password), then there would be a perfect way to track it. Is this possible?
Even if you did hold the power button, the phone would reboot, not turn off, so using apps such as findmydroid would work perfectly.
In Fact, I have seen that my EVO LTE did not have a turn off option when you held the power button on the lockscreen, all it did was reboot when you held it.
I was wondering if we could do the same on the nexus 4
Thanks
Interesting. Would also like this on my nexus 4 too

Because the Nexus 4 does not have a removable battery it has a fail safe hardware switch after holding the power button for a few seconds. It is because of that, such a restriction on the lock screen would not be possible.

It wouldn't really matter since if you hold the power button for around 10s it's the equivalent to a battery pull. This is hard coded into the system and cannot be removed in any way. But I agree it would be nice if there was a way to prevent stolen phones from being turned off.

The Phone would reboot wouldn't it, instead of turning off? If a person did steal it, then that person would eventually get tired of holding that button down and leave it alone, or put it back, which is why I think removing the power off/boot option is a good way to help with this issue.

No, holding down the power button for ten seconds breaks the power circuit to the battery and turns the phone off. To turn it back on you have to press the power button again.

Nope, Try it and tell me, when I hold down the power button, it reboots the phone
Edit: If I hold it until the screen turns off, then it will reboot (which is usually what an normal person would do)
If I hold it for about 5 seconds longer than the screen turns off, then it will turn off (which a normal person would not do, and it took me a few tries to figure it out)
So, I am still wondering if it would be possible to remove the power/boot options from the lockscreen, as it would be a great security feature
I have a N4 and is a really good solution from it. My sgs was stolen and was a first thing that the thief do: Turn off..

This is such a good idea. But then again if they were smart they could just boot in recovery and wipe :/ or take out the sim
Re: Removing Power Off Option on Lockscreen,
Somebody have a little solution? In some threat recommended don't have block screen all with the objective that the thief use our phone and we have more time, but I really know exist the way to difficult the power off ours phone. Some have an idea?

Somebody?

There's gotta be a way, please someone!
Seems like a really good idea! I would love ROM's to start featuring this option! I shouldn't be too hard to code...
Hmmm, subscribed.
Hopefully a dev picks this up.
Thief can pull out SIM or reboot to recovery even if there is no way to turn phone off.

Lets be honest here, 98% of thief's probably wont even know what the recovery is. And it can still be tracked via the GPS even if the sim is removed.
Plus most phones (inc mine) are locked to one sim card, so if the sim is removed, or changed, the phone automatically locks itself, and the location sent to me via a web app and email.
Again, its not meant to stop all thief's, but it's a fail-safe against the majority.

Arright.. gimme one sec. I'm on cm10.1 so i have to flash aokp real quick.
EDIT:
MAKE A BACKUP FIRST!! JUST IN CASE.
Well here is a flashable zip ONLY for AOKP mr1 Build 5 (You will BOOTLOOP flashing on any other rom) . This will remove the power off option, in the power dialog, while on the lockscreen.

I haven't seen this posted, if it was, i apologize in advance...
My Galaxy Tab is the Sprint Tab. I am not sure if this method works for other carrier's Tabs. *ALL TABS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED*
If your Tab freezes, you can power the Tab down by holding in the POWER Button for 8-10 seconds or unit you see the screen turn off.
Personally, like any computer or high-tech device, i usually like to wait at least 10-15 seconds before powering such device back up.
After the device has been OFF for 10-15 seconds, hold the POWER button in for 3 seconds or until your device turns ON.
AGAIN, if Galaxy Tab freezes (ALL TABS CONFIRMED):
1) Hold POWER button in for 8-10 Seconds, or until powered OFF
2) Leave Unit OFF 10-15 seconds.
3) Hold POWER button in for 3 seconds, or until powered ON
4) Enjoy
If you are using a Verizon Tab or a GSM Tab (AT&T, T-Mobile, or Euro) and attempt this method, please say so and i will edit the post.
Thanks in advance!
*EDIT*
It has been confirmed that ALL Galaxy Tabs, CDMA & GSM (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Euros), can use this method to unfreeze.
Same with Euro tabs.

thanks for the info!
Thanks for the info, this worked like a charm!!
Also, just an FYI: The only reason they advise to wait to power up a PC 10-15 seconds after powering it down in this fashion is to give the hard drive a chance to stop spinning. Since the Tab doesn't have a hard drive, you should be good.
Again, thanks for the info! I thought I had to let the battery die or something.
Funny you mention this... the *DAY* i bought my tab, a few hours after tinkering with it, it froze (i was trying to power it down or something).
Anyway, it froze and i had no clue how to fix it.
I think i searched and found the hold Power button trick for as long as mentioned above.
So i can confirm this works with the BELL Galaxy Tab as well.
There is another method for really problematic Tabs:-
1. Connect the Tab to a Mains (not PC USB) power source.
2. Press & Hold the Power On button for 30 seconds AND touch & Hold the Middle of the Tab's screen. This will then bring up a menu asking if you wish to Reboot.
3. A Battery Charging Indicator will appear with a progress bleep sound at the bottom of the Tab.
4. Detach the Power cord and press On and then Off again... It should now reboot.

thats not entirely true its also to let most of the little caps on the mobo discharge all the way
This is just a 'standard hard reset' on lot of android device as a dedicated button on your desktop PC if it has... Not a Tab exclusive feature. Long press power button reset Galaxy S, HTC Legend, Hero etc... (I had...)
If you are on power line it will just switch off but if just on accu. then will restart as well.
Bye,

Thanks for that. On every device I've had I have at some stage had to do a 'battery pull' (ouch!) with the screen still on. As the SGT battery cannot be pulled this is probably the best way.

hi.. i've had my hd2 for a while, everythings worked fine.. today it stopped working. i run android and the screen started freezing on wakeup from standby. i tried a different build and when i press and hold power to turn off the phone completely or reboot, the screen freezes and i can't click turn off. the same thing happens in windows mobile (i've tried several different roms, even the stock one). everything works fine, but when i hold power to turn off the device, the menu pops up but i cant click anything and everything freezes so i have to pull the battery. any suggestions as to what the problem is? is it a hardware problem? thank you..
edit: actually, i dont even have to press anything. the phone works perfectly fine until it goes into standby. i cant get it out of standby, it just freezes at the lockscreen. is it a hardware problem?

This was a common error for me in the past. I solved it by:
HSPL3 (2.08)
Task29
Flashed latest radio (_14)
Flashed new, titanium winmo ROM
Backed up then reformatted my microSD card
Installed a fresh desire hd-based Android from mdeejay
Turned off "Live Wallpaper"
Installed "Advanced Task Killer" (by ReChild in the Market)
Set ATK to kill all but white-listed apps when the screen turned off
Installed "Overclock Widget" (by Billy Cui in the Market)
Set my overclock to 1200, screen off clock to minimum
Also, make sure that your microSD card isn't falling down and going into "read-only" mode. This happened to me and I had to replace the card
Hope this helps!

I had exact same issue... it is a hardware issue with the button chasis/ digitizer or motherboard. Call up HTC directly and most likely phone should still me under warranty.
This happened to my previous hd2, but not before i tried Android. never tried it on this one, hasn't happened.

Absolutely nothing to do with android, You just happen to be using it at the time.
You have/had defective hardware its as simple as that.
It's the digitalizer my good man, I just had my phone replaced because of it. I had the same symptoms you describe when the phone comes out of standby the touchscreen is paperweight.
I've been running Android for a few months now with no problems, a few weeks ago my touch screen locked up and I couldn't unlock the phone for a couple of hours. later that day everything worked great, untill today. The screen locked up again, so I pulled the battery, but now when it asks if I want to boot into Android, i can't push yes. I've tried more than a few times, hoping to get lucky. A previous post says it's a hardware issue. Do i need to revert back to windows to get it fixed? Can I revert without the use of the touchscreen?
I had the same problem. I would use the phone, then keylock it and put it away. later take it out, press the red button and the screen would turn on, but couldnt slide the unlock bar. Had to pull the battery out and restart it. It would always work fine until i press the red button to turn the screen off, then the same thing.
I took it to the shop i bought it from here in China and they basically told me to F**k off! I ended up going to Taiwan and getting the motherboard, screen and buttons replaced.
Even now its not quite right as when i press the red button to turn the screen off, its as if i pressed it twice. The screen turns off then quickly on again. Other times i press the red button and its as if i never pressed it. Phone doesnt crash, everything is working, just as if i never pressed the red button. Its definatly the phone as i have tried 4 different windows and 2 different Android versions.
Hi. So yeah I figured it was a hardware problem. It wouldn't freeze if I turned it on from standby using any key besides the red end call button. But if I turned it on using the end call button the screen would turn on but it would freeze. I called up T-Mobile and got a replacement. HTC offered a replacement too but they were gonna take 2 weeks so I went with T-Mobile. Hopefully this helps anyone else who has this problem. HTC will replace it. Thanks for everyone's help

Same issue here, called up tmobile. Will be receiving a new or "like new" unit next week.
Dear, I had the same issue today, but finally I found some people said it is becacue of the electrostatic problem, the problem cuased by the PC/laptop Power Cable is not connected to the earth.
The solution is just opening a cigerate ligher or even touching the water piple can solve this.
I did solve it.

This is exactly what is happening to me now it is rly driving me mad, how does a cigarette lighter help this?
edit: First i have tried installing a new build and that didn't work, after that i did task29 and fresh install at first it was the same. The strange thing was sometimes when i turn the screen on with back button it would start working, as if it didn't want to work any other button. This is where i lost any hope i just started randomly putting metal coins on the screen, touching pipes radiators and at the end somehow it started working. I was like wtf this is beyond strange, how can someone make this infernal device.
What about using a wall charger? Still no ground? I used both computer and wall charger but the problem remained. If my new unit messes up ill try the car lighter

Well i flashed the rooted version of the new OTA gingerbread update and it worked great and has been running flawless, but today i attempted to boot into recovery by holding the volume down + power and something crazy happened and continues to happen.
When i hold the volume down+power it like 'insta boots' my phone, literally goes from turned off to fully up and booted in like 3 seconds, almost as if my phone was in hibernation mode and was just kinda waking it up... Normally it would take about 25-30 seconds to start, first showing the white HTC screen and then the 4G boot logo for about 10 seconds, and then start to load up.. but when i hold down the volume down and power it just "starts" no boot screens or anything, just from off to on in no exaggeration like 3 seconds and it doesn't take me into the hboot screen anymore to get into recovery...
Has this happened to anyone else? what the hell is going on?
I have noticed this same things happens even if i just hit the power button without holding volume down, almost as if when i turn my phone off(hold power off and then select shut phone off from the menu that pops up), it's not actually turning off and just kinda hibernating, when i choose the restart phone button it takes about 15 seconds to actually shut off, and then it runs through all the boot screens like the white htc EVO 4G screen for about 15 seconds, then the Sprint 4G screen with the sound for about 15 seconds, but when i select 'shut phone down' it jsut instantly cuts the screen to black.. no 'shutting phone down' screen that shows up like when i choose the restart phone option

Don't feel stupid. It's a new feature in GB.
I ALMOST want to keep it on, but then I have this fear of needing to get to Hboot or recovery...
It is wicked how fast it boots up, though, huh??
you can also just choose reboot and push power and vol down at the right time and it works.

if your on ics, android 4.0.3, you can go to the main phone settings, security, and turn off the lockscreen. now youll be able to wake the device with the volume keys. other than that, you will need root. you can always get your phone serviced too. btw, my power button has been dead since august. but with root, my ns is fully functional and set up to be used without a power button.

lots of apps out there thatll do it, but they all need root. i use the lockscreen widget and the button remapper app. i remapped my search button to function as the power button(menu/screenshot and all) but it doesnt wake the device. i turned off my lockscreen and use the volume button to wake.
My power button died in September. But with widgetlocker, I was able to keep my lock screen and still be able to wake it. This does not require root so its a quick fix. However, I also suggest re mapping your search button to power off so you can turn it off. This step does require root but its entirely worth rooting for.
Hope this helps

lots of times itll power up when plugging in, sometimes i just give it a smack or two on the back. but i always get it to power on within a few seconds. the hardest thing is in the bootloader menu, but a smack to the back near the power button lets me select in the bootloader. sometimes it takes seconds, once it took 5 minutes.
Ok cool thanks again

I found an unmounting movie on youtube and the power button is very easily reachable after unscrew the external cover.

I don't think it is that easy. Just look at the picture from ifixit: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/hGCRQAE26jUPAbYT.huge
On the upper left corner you can see the blue and red cable for the vibrator. The white and golden rectangle right above is the power button. There you can see, that it is soldered to the mainboard.
I think you'll have to send your mobile to the Samsung support.
Yes, you're correct. In the unmounting that I looked, I tought to have seen that it was connected with a flexible cable... but isn't
Probably you can find anyway a shop that do it, if you'll find the component.

I don't exactly know how it is in italy...
But here in germany Samsung has partners which do the repairs for them. Sometimes you are lucky and they will repair the phone without a bill if it has apparently quarantee (for instance the nexus s can't be much older than a year so it must still have quarantee).
Perhaps you can find out who does the service for Samsung in Italy and then contact those people directly.
Hello all,
Today I stumbled onto something that is rather annoying. As I was tweaking which apps I'd like disabled, I noticed that the "Check Battery" box pops up on every reboot, especially if I don't immediately unlock my phone. Because I never noticed before, I thought it was all the tweaking I did so I re-enabled everything. It still continues to show though, so I decided to factory reset. It still continues to show!
Now, when you first buy the GS5. If you remember, upon every reboot, you will be welcomed with a "make sure to check battery cover" until the third message, which allows you to disable the dialog all together.
Now, this is where my problem exists(perhaps even yours as well). Reboot your GS5. Do not unlock it when it starts up. Let the phone shut off the screen(default is 30 seconds). Wake the phone and unlock\swipe to go into your home screen. You should see a glimpse of the picture attached. It happens very fast, but it is clearly visible.
Funny thing is... if you reboot the phone, log in immediately after, there is no problem with this quick dialog pop up at all. I mean, it isn't really a problem to begin with. I would just like to know if its faulty software or my GS5.
Thanks in advance,
Dominick
No one? Oh man, I'll definitely be heading to the Verizon store later... lol

p.
It's that the notice on cover not tight? To let you know that it's not water safe?
Yes. I believe this one is referring to the battery covery. It's closed. It's tightly closed. The message appears so fast I had to slow motion a video to obtain the picture I've provided above. It doesn't happen every reboot. It only happens when I reboot, let the phone turn off screen, and then unlock it. I'll see a glimpse of that message and it closes automatically.

Okay so I had some time and made it down to the Verizon store. I can replicate the problem with ease. I know most of the average phone users will probably never notice, but I think I can confidently say that this is a software glitch on all of our GS5's. lol

This is normal. I get the warning everytime I reboot my phone. This is just a warning, even if your cover is tight. You can check the option do not show this again to get rid of the warning.
Also a trick you can do to take a screencap of your phone is to press and hold home and power at the same time.

You know what, I've noticed this too.
It's quite fast. It's probably the same message box that comes up, and since I've checked to not see the message again, it comes up and then disappears. You have to be very quick to catch it.
yea n there is another one that says to make sure the battery door is closed properly where you plug the micro usb in to.. its to make sure its properly sealed in case it comes in to contact with water

Yes, I saw that as well. I think it just a reminder so people pay more attention to close the back cover properly and firmly to avoid water to get in if phone accidently drops in water since s5 designed to prevent from water damage.

Many S5s do not have turning those pop-up warnings off like Verizon models, we need a solution to turning these off without compromising the phone's warranty...
