Gingerbread - Lost hboot/recovery? - EVO 4G General

Well i flashed the rooted version of the new OTA gingerbread update and it worked great and has been running flawless, but today i attempted to boot into recovery by holding the volume down + power and something crazy happened and continues to happen.
When i hold the volume down+power it like 'insta boots' my phone, literally goes from turned off to fully up and booted in like 3 seconds, almost as if my phone was in hibernation mode and was just kinda waking it up... Normally it would take about 25-30 seconds to start, first showing the white HTC screen and then the 4G boot logo for about 10 seconds, and then start to load up.. but when i hold down the volume down and power it just "starts" no boot screens or anything, just from off to on in no exaggeration like 3 seconds and it doesn't take me into the hboot screen anymore to get into recovery...
Has this happened to anyone else? what the hell is going on?
I have noticed this same things happens even if i just hit the power button without holding volume down, almost as if when i turn my phone off(hold power off and then select shut phone off from the menu that pops up), it's not actually turning off and just kinda hibernating, when i choose the restart phone button it takes about 15 seconds to actually shut off, and then it runs through all the boot screens like the white htc EVO 4G screen for about 15 seconds, then the Sprint 4G screen with the sound for about 15 seconds, but when i select 'shut phone down' it jsut instantly cuts the screen to black.. no 'shutting phone down' screen that shows up like when i choose the restart phone option

Don't feel stupid. It's a new feature in GB.
I ALMOST want to keep it on, but then I have this fear of needing to get to Hboot or recovery...
It is wicked how fast it boots up, though, huh??

you can also just choose reboot and push power and vol down at the right time and it works.

Weird problem with Touch HD

Here's the full story.
The first time i encountered the problem was when i was done using Froyo from the Android thread (works perfectly btw). I restarted the device via the button on the back like i've done a hundred times but this time it vibrated and nothing showed on screen.
I figured it was some random fluke - i yanked out the battery, put it back in and powered the phone - everything was fine so i didn't think anything of it.
Two days after that i picked up my phone from my desk and tried to turn on the screen but nothing happened, thinking it was stuck somehow i rested via the button - this time it didn't vibrate and it didn't turn on. I tried a couple more times to restart it - nothing. I pulled the battery and tried to turn it on via the power button - nothing. After three tries of pulling the battery and pressing the power button it vibrated but the screen didn't turn on, i left it like that for a minute and i heard the startup sound from my ROM (Energy's from july 1th).
I pulled the battery again and tried again - this time it turned on vibrated and i saw the smart mobility screen after it booted into WinMo i noticed that the wi-fi was turned on, so while i was mashing the screen i must've activated it. This leads me to speculate that WinMo was powered on and the touchscreen was registering input. I set it down trying to think what the problem can be and turned off the screen - it went to complete black first (noticed it due to being in total darkness) and then turned off - couldn't get it to turn on so I again restarted - it vibrated again, but again no smart mobility screen, the startup sound came and i pressed the power button - that turned on the screen and everything was fine.
Frustrated i performed a hard reset but that didn't help - again the screen wasn't powered on.
A couple of more hard resets later i decided to do a task29.
After the task29 i flashed Energy's 8th july ROM, but the problem is still there. (After flashing i couldn't power it on for a while).
So to sum up:
- from time to time no screen
- did a hard reset and a task 29
- i have access to the bootloader and it loads every time (the screen turns on every time)
So due to the fact that the bootloader turns on the screen every time i think that i can rule out a hardware problem with the screen, but i did a task29 and flashed a new rom so it shouldn't be anything software related either...
The phone works after a while and is fully functional but the problem happens from time to time (i haven't installed any additional software to eliminate interference).
What do you guys think?
I've been doing some testing and the "blackout" presents itself at random.
If i leave the phone on after a while it blacks out when i press the power button the screen stays off but the button at the bottom work, also the volume buttons change the volume and i can hear the sound. If i leave it for a while and try again the screen does turn on. I can't figure out why and what causes it to do that...
One time that it did boot up properly there was this message

I noticed that i had a Microp at the bootloader screen. Does anyone know what it is and why it's tormenting me?
Also while the phone is charging and the led light is on and the phone goes in black out "mode" the light doesn't go off after i unplug it even after it goes out of blackout mode. Maybe that's a clue.
I'm stuck and have no ideas...

i think microp stands for microphone
update it?
don't where from but will post if i find it or someone else migt be able to find it.
another problem is how are you going to install it for that i do not know unless the phone still operates then you can install it by cab if not maybe it can be cooked into one of the new roms.
hope you get your phone running again soon!
Best Regards,
Zac
Sorry for re-bumping an old thread, but I think my phone may be doing something similar.
Did you manage to get it going OP?
My phone has worked fine since I got it (a year or so ago) - but just lately it has been a complete a**e to boot up. I was using the BSHenge ROM (USPL) when the problem started and my phone randomly froze, leaving no alternative but to reset it. After the reset I either get a black screen only, or the initial boot screen "Smart Mobile" with the ROM version in the bottom right corner eventually appearing. Then it hangs.
I did a hard reset, installed the latest NRG ROM and my problems seemed to get worse, I persisted resetting and yanking the battery and eventually it did boot, but froze when trying to do various basic tasks.
I've sort of got it working by hard resetting again, choosing the latest BSHenge ROM and re-flashing... It's still really slow on boot up but does seem to get there... I haven't dared put my storage card back in yet - I intend to back it up and re-format it... I just get the sinking feeling that this problem is getting progressing stil and is possibly hardware?
I don't know what a task 29 is, so I don't think I've done one of those - I've done a hard reset (power and vol-up to boot), and I'm pretty well versed using the USPL and flashing the ROM.

[HOW TO] Frozen Tab? (Works with ALL Tabs!!!!)

I haven't seen this posted, if it was, i apologize in advance...
My Galaxy Tab is the Sprint Tab. I am not sure if this method works for other carrier's Tabs. *ALL TABS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED*
If your Tab freezes, you can power the Tab down by holding in the POWER Button for 8-10 seconds or unit you see the screen turn off.
Personally, like any computer or high-tech device, i usually like to wait at least 10-15 seconds before powering such device back up.
After the device has been OFF for 10-15 seconds, hold the POWER button in for 3 seconds or until your device turns ON.
AGAIN, if Galaxy Tab freezes (ALL TABS CONFIRMED):
1) Hold POWER button in for 8-10 Seconds, or until powered OFF
2) Leave Unit OFF 10-15 seconds.
3) Hold POWER button in for 3 seconds, or until powered ON
4) Enjoy
If you are using a Verizon Tab or a GSM Tab (AT&T, T-Mobile, or Euro) and attempt this method, please say so and i will edit the post.
Thanks in advance!
*EDIT*
It has been confirmed that ALL Galaxy Tabs, CDMA & GSM (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and Euros), can use this method to unfreeze.
Same with Euro tabs.

thanks for the info!
Thanks for the info, this worked like a charm!!
Also, just an FYI: The only reason they advise to wait to power up a PC 10-15 seconds after powering it down in this fashion is to give the hard drive a chance to stop spinning. Since the Tab doesn't have a hard drive, you should be good.
Again, thanks for the info! I thought I had to let the battery die or something.
Funny you mention this... the *DAY* i bought my tab, a few hours after tinkering with it, it froze (i was trying to power it down or something).
Anyway, it froze and i had no clue how to fix it.
I think i searched and found the hold Power button trick for as long as mentioned above.
So i can confirm this works with the BELL Galaxy Tab as well.
There is another method for really problematic Tabs:-
1. Connect the Tab to a Mains (not PC USB) power source.
2. Press & Hold the Power On button for 30 seconds AND touch & Hold the Middle of the Tab's screen. This will then bring up a menu asking if you wish to Reboot.
3. A Battery Charging Indicator will appear with a progress bleep sound at the bottom of the Tab.
4. Detach the Power cord and press On and then Off again... It should now reboot.

thats not entirely true its also to let most of the little caps on the mobo discharge all the way
This is just a 'standard hard reset' on lot of android device as a dedicated button on your desktop PC if it has... Not a Tab exclusive feature. Long press power button reset Galaxy S, HTC Legend, Hero etc... (I had...)
If you are on power line it will just switch off but if just on accu. then will restart as well.
Bye,

Thanks for that. On every device I've had I have at some stage had to do a 'battery pull' (ouch!) with the screen still on. As the SGT battery cannot be pulled this is probably the best way.

vol down + vol up + power = what is this?

i'm running deck's latest with latest amon recovery. i powered off my phone. then i pressed vol down + vol up + power and it vibrated 5 times. the led light starts blinking (like there's a missed call or message), but the screen doesn't turn on or do anything. pressing buttons does nothing, but the light continues blinking. my computer doesn't recognize that the usb cable is plugged in. if i pull the battery out with the cable still plugged in, the light continues blinking.
has anyone else come across this or know what this is?
+1. I've always wondered about this also.

it's not one of those sequences that fakes an incoming call or message so you can get out of awkward situations is it?
With that sequense I boot on security mode off android on atrix

That gets you into safe mode. It will display "Safe" in the bottom left corner of the screen once it fully boots up
Doing volume up + power takes you to diagnostic mode - which sounds pretty much like what you're describing. Perhaps volume down didn't register?

what can be achieved from diagnostic mode? the usb doesn't register and you can't do anything it. hmmmm
You are missing a couple key parts here.
Vol down + vol up + power + menu + search gives you GOD MODE with infinite lives and ammo.

i think you might be able to access any radio options when your bootloaders unlocked like flashing a new prl and stuff like that idk if thats true but my computer installs the drier just fine and comes up as diagnostic in dmanager. i flash prl's through cdma workshop all the time so i think its just another option in case a flash goes bad but someone tell me if im wrong here.
Pressing all three keys together does a soft reset for me. It sometimes doesn't work, but usually does and sure beats popping off the back cover for a battery pull. I have sometimes what you're describing though with the 5 vibrates and flashing green. I'm not sure why, but usually it works great as a soft reset sequence.

if your on ics, android 4.0.3, you can go to the main phone settings, security, and turn off the lockscreen. now youll be able to wake the device with the volume keys. other than that, you will need root. you can always get your phone serviced too. btw, my power button has been dead since august. but with root, my ns is fully functional and set up to be used without a power button.
If I root . Is it just a certain ROM that will do it or an app

lots of apps out there thatll do it, but they all need root. i use the lockscreen widget and the button remapper app. i remapped my search button to function as the power button(menu/screenshot and all) but it doesnt wake the device. i turned off my lockscreen and use the volume button to wake.
My power button died in September. But with widgetlocker, I was able to keep my lock screen and still be able to wake it. This does not require root so its a quick fix. However, I also suggest re mapping your search button to power off so you can turn it off. This step does require root but its entirely worth rooting for.
Hope this helps

lots of times itll power up when plugging in, sometimes i just give it a smack or two on the back. but i always get it to power on within a few seconds. the hardest thing is in the bootloader menu, but a smack to the back near the power button lets me select in the bootloader. sometimes it takes seconds, once it took 5 minutes.

I don't think it is that easy. Just look at the picture from ifixit: http://guide-images.ifixit.net/igi/hGCRQAE26jUPAbYT.huge
On the upper left corner you can see the blue and red cable for the vibrator. The white and golden rectangle right above is the power button. There you can see, that it is soldered to the mainboard.
I think you'll have to send your mobile to the Samsung support.
Yes, you're correct. In the unmounting that I looked, I tought to have seen that it was connected with a flexible cable... but isn't
Probably you can find anyway a shop that do it, if you'll find the component.
Mauro
I don't exactly know how it is in italy...
But here in germany Samsung has partners which do the repairs for them. Sometimes you are lucky and they will repair the phone without a bill if it has apparently quarantee (for instance the nexus s can't be much older than a year so it must still have quarantee).
Perhaps you can find out who does the service for Samsung in Italy and then contact those people directly.

recover SM-G900F from boot loop

However, if I boot up the phone, I hear the Samsung bling, blue LED turns on for few seconds and after that the boot process seems to be looped as phone vibrates lightly with 10 second interval and both back and recents keys are lit. Screen is off during all this.
My initial idea was to factory-reset the phone(clear /data and /cache partitions), but if I power on the phone with power button while pushing volume up and home buttons, the phone just vibrates for a fraction of a second and that's it. It does not enter into recovery and looks like the phone is off.
When I try to enter into download mode(push power button while home and volume down buttons are pushed down), the phone behaves exactly like in case I simply push the power button which I already described above.
Just for information, if I connect the charger to phone, then the phone vibrates for a fraction of a second and around half a minute the red led is lit(indicates that the device is connected to a charger and it is charging).
Is there a way to unbrick phone if there is no access to recovery and download mode? Please let me know if any additional information is needed.
Try the following: remove the battery. Hold down the buttons and insert battery. Perhaps you have to ask a buddy to help... You should enter download mode....

I did that, but unfortunately phone just starts to vibrate for a fraction of second with 8 seconds interval as long as I keep the buttons down. There are no LED lights, no sound and no output to screen.
What I find especially weird is that accessing the download mode earlier, when I posted my initial post, the phone behaved exactly like in case I simply pushed the power button, i.e I heard the Samsung bling, blue LED turned on for few seconds and after that the boot process seemed to be looped as phone vibrated lightly with 10 second interval and both back and recents keys were lit. Or maybe I did not push all three buttons properly down when I tried to access the download mode during my initial post

I made an USB jig myself and also bought this one and while both worked with my GT-I9100, they did not work with SM-G900F. If I inserted USB jig to SM-G900F, the phone simply vibrated once and that was it.
Is it possible to JTAG SM-G900F? Use some sort of flasher like ATF-box? Or if one can not access the download mode, then there is nothing to do other than sell the phone into parts?
I finally took my Galaxy S5 to Samsung service and they replaced the front panel In other words phone got the new screen and now it boots up just fine. How to explain this? I would have thought that motherboard, where the flash memory modules are, needs to be replaced.
