Replacement screens needed, yet another cracked back. - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Yep. So the inevitable happened. After cracking it's back 15 days back, I just dropped it 2 feet face down and boom, broken screen. The right side and the top of my touch screen aren't working, some of the left side is. Sort of the bottom left quadrant. Strange.
So guys, I really need some advice/help. I have two options.
1. Sell the nexus off for parts for around $180.
2. Buy a replacement screen from somewhere.
Please post any sources of the replacement screen you know of, and I'd need international shipping.
LG doesn't sell the N4 in my country so can't get it repaired officially.

Okay, alternative question. How do I switch my phone off when I can't touch 'Power Off' button on the screen after long pressing the power button? Also, I need to take a backup of all my apps, contacts and SMSs.

Hold power button until it shuts off

If I keep the power button pressed, the phone switches off but starts again on it's own.

Hold down Vol- as the phone reboots to get into bootloader mode. Then select "Power Off" with the volume buttons and the power button to select.
Also, I think LG will replace the screen for $140.

check out GMD GestureControl: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.goodmooddroid.gesturecontroldemo
It is an awesome app which lets you set up a lot of gestures, included the one to show the "Power Menu"...root needed, of course...

power button wake up problem

is anyone having issues with waking up this phone? Randomly to get the screen back on I will have to press the power button about four times for the screen to come back on. its really starting to bug
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
press harder. I learned quickly that it takes a firm push and you have to hit the button w/o your fingers getting caught up on the sides of the phone.
it's either that or you got a bad button
I have the same issue, this along with the lag I get at times when I attempt to use the camera has me seriously considering returning this phone. The Inspired I returned had non of these issues just a tinny speaker.

Mine wouldnt go to sleep today when pushing the button. Seems to be a few bugs with this phone eh?
I'm starting to look at re-mapping the keyword to allow the volume keys to wake it up, and then use the fingerprint reader to unlock it. That power button seems to fragile to me. To turn the screen off I just use Extended Controls.
Any thoughts?
Widget locker has an option to use the vol buttons for wake
I kinda have the same problem but its when i press the lock button the screen shuts off but then comes right back on. I press it again, it shuts off, then comes right back on.
I had the same problem - power button wouldn't wake phone from sleep.
I had to do a battery pull to resolve the issue.
I'm using the lastest FW.
Motorola phones (Not just Atrix, but Droid X also) have some funky business that sometimes prevents/delays the screen from turning on, even if the button press is registered. This happens with the power button and also the volume buttons if they're used to wake the device (Like with WidgetLocker). I haven't been able to narrow it down, but I suspect it's related to (ab)use of PowerManager's preventScreenOn()

It sounds logic to me, because even editing the right keyboard file to add a wake_dropped to the volume down, it won't turn on the screen. I hate when they change things the way they do with this, the bootloader, etc.

Turn screen on with a touch

In the display setting we can adjust the screem timeout. Mine is on 10 minutes for example.
Is there any application which can turn on the screen just with a touch on the screen (instead of pressing the power button) ?
Would be very nice together with the application "Unlock with WiFi"
I mean is there any application which enables the functionality to get the screen back (phone is not locked) only by touching the screen (instead of pressing the power switch on the top).
I know, folks, it is not a big deal to press the power switch, it is just a little bit more comfort to touch the screen only
I don't, believe so, but you can use the volume keys:

Hi scoob800. Thanks, but the volume keys would be pritty "the same" as to press the power button.
Generally spoken. Is it possible (and in case it is) and is there any application which can detect a touch on the screen, even if the screen is off ?
Well, the only thing I can think of is to set your screen to never autolocking and have a screensaver app that leaves the screen black. If you do that your battery will probably drain a good bit seeing as your screen will always be on.

You can achieve this with NoLED, but that is not its intended purpose. I will explain how: When you get a notification that would normally trigger your LED, NoLED displays a customizable icon on a black screen. With SGS, which it was developed for, has samoled screen and black uses little to no bat/cpu. This is NOT the case with the Atrix, your battery WILL suffer. So battery aside.. Set NoLED to display the time (that way its always on even when you dont have a new notification). Now play with the settings, tell it to "wake up" with the home key. TaDa!
the short answer is feasibly NO. having the touchscreen on at all times will DESTROY your battery life. your only option is to enable the volume buttons.
I use the volume buttons with no lock screen ..... waaaayyy better then powerbutton

OK. But to be honest, what is the difference to use the volume buttons instead the power button ? I would like to avoid this mechanical stress of these buttons. As I used my last phone ( a Samsung) for 8 years, I am afraid, my ATRIX will not make it such a long time
But I got an other idea. What about one of the four "softkey" buttons ? For example the home button.

The problem is they're still softkeys and not actual hardware buttons. Using the volume is just easier to press depending how your holding the phone. That and your spreading out that wear of the power button across 3 different buttons.

Soft keys will waste a lot of battery, it isn't a good way to turn on your screen by either soft keys or touchscreen

[Guide] How to fix Galaxy Note II Home Button Lag

Some of you might have noticed a small amount of lag when you press the homekey. I certainly did, especially coming back to Touchwiz form AOSP based ROMs. Well don't worry, theres a easy way to fix it!
The problem is S-Voice. Notice when you double tap your home button S-Voice will open. Thats where the Lag comes from. The Note II is looking for a second press on the homekey. So sadly, if you still use this feature then im afraid your stuck Sorry, but for those that don't your in luck!
Its simple, open S-Voice and go to -
> Menu (For those of you that don't know how to do this, or are maybe a little stupid, press the menu button - left of the homekey. If you still handle it, I recommend returning your device for a calculator)
> Settings
> Un-tick the 'Open via the home key' option
> ...
> WIN.
Please remember to click the thanks button!
Sorry if someone has already made a thread about this. Couldn't see one anyway.
People that use Go Launcher don't use the home key so much.
We use the one thing I love with Go. We just strike the thumb up.

I think this is common knowledge in Samsung phones by now. There's something to note...
There's a side effect to to turning off that option:
If you disable "open via home button", then the phone will kick you to the home screen when you press the home button to turn the screen on (before it gets locked.)
In other words,
Say you're reading something, the screen times out and turns off (but not locked yet), you press the home button to turn the screen on again, you are taken to the home screen.
It's an unfortunate side-effect, but seems unavoidable (save for using a different launcher).
So if you press the home button, you are taken to the home screen?
Who knew!!

Read my post again and try to understand it before you make fun.
Here ill explain again in layman's terms:
*With the open via home button option ticked:
Scenario : when the screen turns off, you press the home button to turn it on, the screen turns on and you're still in the same app where you left off.
*With the open via home button unticked:
Scenario: when the screen turns off, you press the home button to turn it on, the screen turns on and you are kicked from the app you were in back to the home screen.
That's not how it's supposed to work. If the screen turns off, pressing the home button should only turn it on without kicking you back to the home screen.

Sorry bro, mine doesn't work that way. With the open via home unticked, mine just wakes it up. If I'm in gmail, lock the screen, then hit home to wake it up, I still end up right back in gmail.
All these things are already known guys.
..It does take you to home screen
So you should use the power button to wake up screen. . You will go back to where you were before the screen locked

You still don't get it of course the problem doesn't happen if you lock the screen. It only happens if the screen times out automatically by itself and you wake it up before it goes into lock mode.

Best option for me is to disable the option to get rid of the home button lag, then increase time out to something like 1min,so the screen doesn't time out a lot and the problem gets too annoying.

Then you'd have to unlock the phone every time the screen times out, which is equally as annoying, more so if you have a pin set up to unlock
I can't believe people still use the home button at all, with apps like "swipe pad" where one action takes you from the screen you are on to the app you want.
Set one pad as your launcher if you need homescreen.
Fill the horrid home button with glue for all i care.

Galaxy S5 Power Button Problem

Hello guys I am asking for help since when I drop my phone accidentally the power button actually broke as it doesn't work at all and I put it in a bag of rice so the rice sucks all the water and the power button is completely dead, it sometimes work tbh then stops responding again. Now here is my question. How can I fix this without shipping my phone to Samsung or Pay a few dollars to get this fixed?

Mmmm use the home button to wake up the phone and install an app to lock the screen and to restart the device if needed
Try different waking methods, double tap or volume buttons or the home key.. And locking, prefer locking apps or gestures.. But I would suggest, get the power button replaced, Bcoz you ll get locked out, when battery runs out or phn turns off!

Good thing is that when the phone is completely charge but the power button is not responding all I do is hold the down volume + Home button then use my charger to boot it up then press down volume again.
At the end of the day the choice is yours as to whether to get the button sorted or not. You *seem* to be ignoring the sound advice that everyone has told you. Again, that's your choice....In the same way as it'll be our choice to ignore your requests for help when you inevitably create a post with the title....
"Help....bootlooping phone and broken power button"
Good luck with that one fella.

Mushy power button?

Well, title's pretty explanatory :b My power button has become mushy, and not at all tactile to press. Anyone else with the same feel? What to do?
Bought it on launch day..
Mine is very clicky. You could either try using a case that has a bump over the buttons to help make it feel more clicky, or try contacting support and see if you can get a replacement.
How many times have you pressed it more firmly than you should?
We all, tend to do that when we enter a lot in the recovery using the button method instead of the advance reboot option available in the developers' option.
Why exactly do you use that button?
(I suffered from the same behaviour on a Google Nexus 4)
I wish I could say I'm surprised but I'm not impressed with the build quality of this phone and expect that the various buttons and ports will go bad for a lot of owners. I'm already having problems with the headphone jack and my phone is just 3 weeks old.
I rarely use the power button. Double tap home button to sleep and use the fingerprint or double tap to wake.
I sometimes accidentally press the power button, but that's about all the usage mine sees.
