Galaxy S5 Power Button Problem - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys I am asking for help since when I drop my phone accidentally the power button actually broke as it doesn't work at all and I put it in a bag of rice so the rice sucks all the water and the power button is completely dead, it sometimes work tbh then stops responding again. Now here is my question. How can I fix this without shipping my phone to Samsung or Pay a few dollars to get this fixed?

Mmmm use the home button to wake up the phone and install an app to lock the screen and to restart the device if needed

Try different waking methods, double tap or volume buttons or the home key.. And locking, prefer locking apps or gestures.. But I would suggest, get the power button replaced, Bcoz you ll get locked out, when battery runs out or phn turns off!

Good advice to get the power button fixed. There *will* come a time when you need it.

Good thing is that when the phone is completely charge but the power button is not responding all I do is hold the down volume + Home button then use my charger to boot it up then press down volume again.

At the end of the day the choice is yours as to whether to get the button sorted or not. You *seem* to be ignoring the sound advice that everyone has told you. Again, that's your choice....In the same way as it'll be our choice to ignore your requests for help when you inevitably create a post with the title....
"Help....bootlooping phone and broken power button"
Good luck with that one fella.

Ok so far i managed to edit my keymap layout, and removed the wakeup flag of the power button, this already prevents the powerbutton to show the Phone options when in locked screen mode.
This way he can't change he's airplanemode or something similar.
Only thing i still not understand is the power button behavior when you realy long press it. The phone automaticly shuts down complete. Is this hardware controlled or software controlled?
Nobody knows anything more about this?
Something can be done
Like disabling the power button temporarily by proximity sensor
An app could do this
i'm also looking for a solution with this damn power button...
if i have got my G3 in my pocket it happens quiet often that it turns itself off cause screen lock doesn't disable the power button
does anyone have a solution for this prob ?
@cdesai:
which app could do this ?

The tasker app, could probably pull that off:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...EsIm5ldC5kaW5nbGlzY2guYW5kcm9pZC50YXNrZXJtIl0.
Its a paid app though. You could try to setup tasker to react to tilt sensors as well, an example would be: Tasker disabling the power button when you phone is upside down (like in your pocket). Hope it helpps
For people who have the problem of the power bbutton when in their pockets- Just put in upside down . I get the problem many times so I put the cell phone in such a manner that the power button is facing the top and the camera is touching the fabric of the jeans. Thus making the power buton free from any contact.
Works for me.

@Wiggierip: thanks, but i'm looking for a free solution...
@ak700:
power button is facing top, display is facing to my leg that's how i have it in my pocket.
i guess that's the same way as you described isn't it ?
^^^^
Yup thats the way. It works for me even in slim fit jeans too.
lucky you
mine switches off too often when i have it in my pocket like that
i just don't get it why the galaxy 3 turns off when long pressing the power button, but every other samsung mobile i tried (galaxy S, galaxy S2, omnia 7) does not ...
makes me crazy -.-

That behavior can't be turned off. It is basically our "hard reset", to be used when the phone won't react to anything (instead of having to pull the battery). Even though I don'tknow that for sure, I'm fairly certain that this is hardware controlled. Out works even if there it's a kernel panic (better known here as "black screen of death"), when the system doesn't do anything anymore...
Sorry

You could pull the battery out or wait for the battery to die. Just kidding, sometimes the phone turns on automatically when plugged in

I'm pretty sure he asked how to get the phone ON without the power button, not OFF.
And no I don't think there is unless you open up your phone and do some improvised modding in there. If your power button is messed up though you should probably just get a warranty replacement.
For a single time turning on - remove the battery, plug in USB charger, insert the battery. Try several times if didn't work the first time.
When in Android - you can install an OS that supports trackpad wake, to wake the phone up with trackpad instead of power button. Default OS does, too.
For proper power button functionality - there's nothing you can do but replace either the button or the whole phone.
Hmm thanks for that Jack, I never knew about the USB thing. Never tried it on an android anyways so I wouldn't have ever tried it.
As another suggestion, you could try remapping your keys as well. Someone posted recently in this forum about remapping his power button to the camera button to bypass a faulty button. I don't think it will let you turn on the phone with the camera(I'm not sure anyways, I haven't done this), but it will give you power button functionality throughout the OS of your choice.
I hate to bump this but mine just broke and my dumbass decided to pull the battery because it wouldn't go to sleep =\
I'm going to try to get another one tomorrow but I need a phone in the mean time
Thanks in advance

Defect power button.

Hey guys.
Ive been having a lot of trouble with my power button. At first it became less responsive (Having to push the button 2-3 times to activate the screen).
Now it seems like it is not working at all (Having to push 6-7 times).
Anyone seen this problem before and knows of a way to fix it?
Or does anyone know a workaround? (Like using the search button to act like the power button perhaps?)
Thanks in advance.
I don't really have any suggestions on how to fix the power button itself, but I do have a few workarounds if you're interested
The first is Smart Screen ON. This app was featured on the main portal not too long ago, and I have to say, it works quite well. It uses the proximity sensor to turn the screen on and (optionally) off. In the span of two weeks, it's saved my phone over 2000 power button presses (the app keeps track). I have been running the app 24/7 since I installed it and have not noticed any impact on battery life. I'd say it's worth a try.
As an alternative, you may have some luck with ButtonRemapper (requires root). It should let you remap the search button like you had wanted. You could just edit the keyboard files directly, but this app makes it pretty simple. : )
Also, in case you didn't know, the home button will wake the phone by default, but it obviously doesn't turn the screen back off.

Thats what im trying to avoid.
What program did you use to remap the button?
Thanks for the info man!
Yeah it's a ***** how the phone only lasts a year before it starts breaking but glad i can get rid of it in 2 months.
I use ButtonRemapper, i take it you have root access so just download the .APK i have attached and its pretty simple just find the search key in the app and change it so it acts like the power button (It's simply you will get it when you open the app). Once you have done that the phone works fine when in normal use you just gotta tap the search button not the power button.
But as my power button is fully broken im not sure if the power button works if the phone turns off. So my work around is plug the charger in then when you see the sony logo keep taping the volume down until you launch in CWM and then just tap reboot now and it will boot up, hope this helps.
It's the only work around without having to spend money i could think off, so defiantly a good temp fix.
Yeah i think the build quality of this device isnt what it could've been. Although im happy the screen hasnt broken yet.
Thanks for the APK!
You can just use the hone button to wake the screen. Give the power button a break

Power button fried on G2.. how to reach phone reboot/shutoff options?

So my phone overheated (my fault) and the power button is broken, as well as the hardware keyboard. (Functional but inaccurate most the time) I can reboot my phone by pulling the battery, but don't know how to reach the power options menu that used to be reached via the power button. Its been like this for some time now, but yesterday, I pulled my phone from my pocket and saw the power options menu on the screen. (Reboot, Shut Off, Recovery, Bootloader)
Thing is, I have NO idea how that happened. Since I cant turn the screen off manually, things get inadvertently "pushed" when I put it in my pocket before screen times itself out. So obviously there is a way to reach the power menu without the power button working. Anyone here have any idea how to do that? I would greatly appreciate any help!
well your power button must sometimes work, pulling the battery will of course turn it off but you would need to press the power button to turn it on
probably just sticky, open it up and use some electric parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol to clen up he button, fully dry it and then see if it works better

No, power button absolutely does not work. Its been fried for about 2 months now. I already tried all the tricks. Pulling the battery (for some reason) is how I reboot the phone. I can't really turn it "off" aside from leaving the battery out. As soon as I put it back in, the phone automatically turns on. This may be a fail safe measure in case the power button does break, as in my case. I'm just thinking there must be some way to reach that power menu other than power button.
well it isn't a fail safe, its just what happens when the power button is stuck on, the plastic button you touch is part of the case, this makes contact with the actual power button which is part of the motherboard.
from what you descriped you power button is stuck, but do as you please

I see what you are saying. If that is the case, not sure I have the tools or know-how to actually open my phone up. I just tried the tricks like burying it in dry rice to try and soak up moisture and whatnot. Due for a new phone in a few months anyway, just was curious if there is some shortcut via software that I'm not aware of.
if your phone is rooted there are apps that can creat shortcut icons on your screen to do most any key press. just search the market.
don't know of any rom with a built in feature like this so I'm sure the power button just became unstuck for a moment and then restuck

There's an app that is filled Buttonremapper, on xda here. Search it through Google. It lets you remap a key to any action you want

Replacement screens needed, yet another cracked back.

Yep. So the inevitable happened. After cracking it's back 15 days back, I just dropped it 2 feet face down and boom, broken screen. The right side and the top of my touch screen aren't working, some of the left side is. Sort of the bottom left quadrant. Strange.
So guys, I really need some advice/help. I have two options.
1. Sell the nexus off for parts for around $180.
2. Buy a replacement screen from somewhere.
Please post any sources of the replacement screen you know of, and I'd need international shipping.
LG doesn't sell the N4 in my country so can't get it repaired officially.
Okay, alternative question. How do I switch my phone off when I can't touch 'Power Off' button on the screen after long pressing the power button? Also, I need to take a backup of all my apps, contacts and SMSs.

Hold down Vol- as the phone reboots to get into bootloader mode. Then select "Power Off" with the volume buttons and the power button to select.
Also, I think LG will replace the screen for $140.
