Well, title's pretty explanatory :b My power button has become mushy, and not at all tactile to press. Anyone else with the same feel? What to do?
Bought it on launch day..
Mine is very clicky. You could either try using a case that has a bump over the buttons to help make it feel more clicky, or try contacting support and see if you can get a replacement.
How many times have you pressed it more firmly than you should?
We all, tend to do that when we enter a lot in the recovery using the button method instead of the advance reboot option available in the developers' option.
Why exactly do you use that button?
(I suffered from the same behaviour on a Google Nexus 4)
I wish I could say I'm surprised but I'm not impressed with the build quality of this phone and expect that the various buttons and ports will go bad for a lot of owners. I'm already having problems with the headphone jack and my phone is just 3 weeks old.
I rarely use the power button. Double tap home button to sleep and use the fingerprint or double tap to wake.
I sometimes accidentally press the power button, but that's about all the usage mine sees.

Rarely. There are options even for that. Can use an app if I really want to.

Hi All, I have owned a lot of HTC phones and now I have the HD, its the first time I see HTC phone with such small, thin, and hard to press power button !!
especially in the dark, I cant press it and wake up my phone easily !!
I MANAGED TO TWEAK MY HD and now I wake up my device pressing the volume button, but again I have new problem : sometimes when I carry my phone the volume get pressed by mistake and the ringer get muted or low and I miss some calls !!!
Any solution for this problem so I can wake up my phone from the standby without pressing the microscopic power button !!
Take out the stylus and insert it back again. That wakes up the device. Otherwise you might want to search for a G-sensor enabled "wake-up" application. "Shake_it_to_wake" so to speak...

How can you use it to wake up the device? I don't see that option in the description, except the default stylus in and out...
...
I guess S2U won´t help you with waking up your device but if you use volume buttons it will protect you from accidental muting your phone.
I found power hard to press, too, but then I looked closely: This power 'button' is indeed non-symmetrical - at least on *my* device: it stands up a bit on one side, the left side, which is closer to the middle of the HD. So I press it *there*, because obviously enough that's the place where the sensor is located. It works easy every time.

Ducasito. Good observation. I wondered why sometime it was easy and sometimes hard. So the slight non-symmetrical button is not a manufacturing fault but a very subtle design feature. Now I know which side to hit. Thanks
Seems all HD's are different OR I have a very heavy finger.
All I need to do to get it to wake it lightly touch the power button and it comes on.

I suppose it is just a matter of "where" you push the button. Just push it on the left edge (where the small led is placed) and you will not need that much pressure to switch the device on or off. The button sensor is actually under that left edge. the picture shows the powerbutton part (picture taken from the HTC Touch HD service manual). Under the left edge of it is the sensor, so putting the pressure there is the best way of pressing the button

You can use AE button plus. I use this to convert my volum buttons to up and down buttons on single click, select/ok on double click, and volume on hold and press.
Thanks for your answer but I´ve a further question:
Do you "wake up" (from standby) the blackstone by using this AE button? I tried to use this software but I couldn`t wake up the Touch HD from standby by using the volume buttons.
Any setting/way to make an app or hack for them to stay on for longer? It's so annoying that they turn off!
Oh man, I'm getting REALLY annoyed by that. It's bad enough that you can only turn the screen on to use the phone by using the power button that is in such a stupid position.
I'm really starting to miss the Home button on my iPhone.
Actually any of the 3 hard buttons will wake the phone so you can use vol up and down as well

Right. Vol keys don't wake the phone. It would be nice in theory, but adjusting volume (listening to music) with the phone in your pocket would then wake the phone and possibly allow the screen to unlock. I know that's a bit of a stretch, but being a touchscreen right next to your leg.....it could easily happen.
I can't believe there isn't a setting for this. The lights turn off too quickly. There should've been a low-power 'Always On W/Screen' option.
I wish they would've opted for hardware buttons, to be honest. That way, you can at least feel them out in the dark.
I'm new to the Android development scene, but would it be possible for someone to develop a market app to address the issue?
Why did the US carrier phones had the Home button removed.
Now they are incompatible with the regular Galaxy S firmware, and are hard to use in the dark.
Just stupid.
But 4 hard buttons are not a good solution either. A large Home button is.
I like the idea of a single hard button (the N1 trackball, the iPhone home button, the Galaxy S home button), and I agree: it was a stupid decision to remove that button.

dude, stop whining like a lil biscuit. the power button as screen on/off method is fabulous and quick. Loving the 4 touch buttons. Yes I understand the lights go off quite quickly but don't worry, i already have and you will also remember their position.

Power Button on top of the phone is more ergonomic.
Big Home Button is also more ergonomic and you don't have to "remember" it.
I think the US carriers wanted space to slap their branding, so they removed the large Home button. Plus, the 4 buttons make it harder to use international firmware, which will likely advance faster than the US-only versions.
Hi all,
I heard a lot of people complain about the hard to (press power) buttons.
Logically is the main reason why htc makes hard to press (power) buttons is to avoid acitentally turning the device on/off while its in your pocket or wathever.
So why not make good easy to press CAPACTIVE (power) HARDWARE buttons.
I think that should solve a lot of problems
Please share your opinions about this!
A capacitive power button would lead to people triggering it every time they put their hand in their pocket to get it if they so much as brush against it.
It's not that hard to press anyway.
edit: No to mention if you hold the phone in landscape mode the button would then rest against your palm, again triggering it.
a capacitive power button wont be enabled if u switched the device off.. how are you gonna start your phone then .. thats why its a physical button
i have no problem with the power button, i like it. was using a hd2 before and on this device the power button was the same like the [call end] button. and that drained my battery always. sometimes you sitting in a tight seat like on a airplaine and you alway acciedently hit the button or even by walking arround or if you have other stuff in your pocket.
It would have been nice if we could get an option to also use the volume down button to turn the screen on.

Next time please just name the app, makes it a lot easier, and saves a lot of searching.
Anyway, I found it on my own, and the app is called "No Lock". Best thing of all, it's free in the market!
This app will disable the lock screen, and thus wakes up immediately without having to unlock. Also, now you can wake the phone up with the volume button.
widget locker can also power on with volume button, and its very customizable but its not free, well worth the cost tho

In the display setting we can adjust the screem timeout. Mine is on 10 minutes for example.
Is there any application which can turn on the screen just with a touch on the screen (instead of pressing the power button) ?
Would be very nice together with the application "Unlock with WiFi"
I mean is there any application which enables the functionality to get the screen back (phone is not locked) only by touching the screen (instead of pressing the power switch on the top).
I know, folks, it is not a big deal to press the power switch, it is just a little bit more comfort to touch the screen only
I don't, believe so, but you can use the volume keys:

Hi scoob800. Thanks, but the volume keys would be pritty "the same" as to press the power button.
Generally spoken. Is it possible (and in case it is) and is there any application which can detect a touch on the screen, even if the screen is off ?
Well, the only thing I can think of is to set your screen to never autolocking and have a screensaver app that leaves the screen black. If you do that your battery will probably drain a good bit seeing as your screen will always be on.
Sent from my Gingerblurred Atrix
You can achieve this with NoLED, but that is not its intended purpose. I will explain how: When you get a notification that would normally trigger your LED, NoLED displays a customizable icon on a black screen. With SGS, which it was developed for, has samoled screen and black uses little to no bat/cpu. This is NOT the case with the Atrix, your battery WILL suffer. So battery aside.. Set NoLED to display the time (that way its always on even when you dont have a new notification). Now play with the settings, tell it to "wake up" with the home key. TaDa!
the short answer is feasibly NO. having the touchscreen on at all times will DESTROY your battery life. your only option is to enable the volume buttons.
I use the volume buttons with no lock screen ..... waaaayyy better then powerbutton

OK. But to be honest, what is the difference to use the volume buttons instead the power button ? I would like to avoid this mechanical stress of these buttons. As I used my last phone ( a Samsung) for 8 years, I am afraid, my ATRIX will not make it such a long time
But I got an other idea. What about one of the four "softkey" buttons ? For example the home button.

The problem is they're still softkeys and not actual hardware buttons. Using the volume is just easier to press depending how your holding the phone. That and your spreading out that wear of the power button across 3 different buttons.

Soft keys will waste a lot of battery, it isn't a good way to turn on your screen by either soft keys or touchscreen

If you're on stock TW, you can enable palm gestures and swipe from left to right. If you're on a custom ROM, chances are there is an option to add "take screenshot" to the extended power menu accessed by holding the power button.
Try this
In my experience you have to hold the buttons for a second or two; it's not a quick "click" -- it's a press, hold, release.
Power Button + Home button works for me 99% of the time. Just make sure to press them at the exact same time and hold until it takes the screenshot...
The wave your palm over the phone gesture is the one that sucks, in my opinion. That one works less than 50% of the time for me and I see no reason to ever enable it when you can just press Power Button + Home easily...

Agreed. When I swipe to take a screenshot, many times it changes the page and then takes the pic! Maybe I just need to perfect my technique. When I do the power/home button trick, I make sure to press the power button just before I hit the home button and that seems to work well for me.

I agree - anytime the palm swipe has worked for me is if my phone is laying on a flat surface, the screen is completely clean and i really focus on setting my hand on the edge and quickly swiping. Most times I just turn the page or move the screen.
Holding Home + Power Button is the way to go.
If may work better for anyone having trouble with the button method if you hold the power button with your left hand and the home with your right simultaneously. That's the only way my girlfriend can do it.
