Is my Defy dead?
I was messing around in recovery mode and formatted internal memory by mistake now my defy is completely dead. See below for symptoms;
It doesn't turn on, no bootloader, no recovery..
No function Power + Vol+/-.
LED does not light with or without usb.
Only when I connect it to my PC (windows 7 x64) and insert the battery, is there any kind of response makes the same sound as it does when a plug and play device is connected, but off again at 2-3 seconds. Tries to install OMAP3630 drivers but fails saying device is unplugged. (see attached image) Have installed latest Latest Motorola Handset drivers to no avail.
RSD Lite 5.5 (ran in adminstrator mode) does not show device, not even a white LED as mentioned in other posts.
Tried using the Macgyver method to 'jump start' in order for RSD Lite to detect phone no difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated ?

Thanks for the reply, doesn't the macgyver hack offer a workaround to not having the battery fully charged?
Yes, it does
Just to confirm, before this unfortunate incident you were able to flash sbfs right?

I assume so. Although I didn't have any need too at the time but do now.
I'm asking the question since there may be a driver problem. Although another person like you had mistakenly formatted internal memory and was unable to resurrect it. So you have really slim chances, if any at all.

Just wiped and reset my Bravo and now it is in an endless boot loop. Tried to use RSD lite to load the sbf but the drivers are not working. RSD lite does not recognize my device.

Go to stock recovery by pressing power+volume down, then press both volumes buttons and wipe data/cache.
If you want to flash your phone with RSD Lite, you have to turn on your phone pressing power+volume up, then you will be in bootloader mode, then connect the phone to the PC via USB and flash the SBF.
The stock recovery doesn't work for some reason it was giving me an error. Can't get into the bootloader mode because the battery won't charge. I'm getting the question mark battery icon whenever I go to charge the phone and the bootloader says the battery is too low.
I actuality cheated the too low battery can't charge part. I took an old charger of mine and cut off the end. I then took the neg and pos ends and taped them to the battery so they made contact with the batt. NOT each other. Then I put the battery into the phone and held it there until RSD loded my sbf and then had a party. Took me like 3 hours to think of it. Anyway, after it loaded I undid everything and put the battery back in and plugged in the charger and charged it to %100. FYI Always start with a fully charged battery. BTW on most chargers the wire that is rough or has lines is negitive i belive. I am not responsable for anything you do to your phone resulting from this post.

if you dont wanna cut your OEM charger , you can buy a battery charger that charges battery only , they are really like 3 bucks free shipping off ebay, sometimes you can buy a high capacity battery and a charger combo for like 12 bucks
i hope everything works out for you
i just found this how to solve your battery problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=892026
Summery: Cut end off any USB cable. Connect red to + on battery, Black to -. Insert into phone. Plug other end into a) computer b) wall plug and then boot into bootloader. Plug standard USB cable into phone and then computer. Flash correct SBF file with your choice of RSD Lite. Done.
Did I miss anything?
Oh and I posted in the Defy forum and was tossed out for comparing it to the Bravo. Touchy guys overthere.

If you can connect it to the battery only, it will be less dangerous for your phone.
It could charge something, walter79 did it with his defy!
--------------------------------------
DEFY owners dont know that defy has a little brother which needs lot of attention, because it has the same potential.
True true but I was in a hurry. Worked anyway. After reading I did look at the charger that I used and it does only put out 3.8v at 875Ma so it's so close at being the same power as the battery it'self that I don't think the phone knew any better. Oh well the what if's and shouldi've's of the world.
And yes the Bravo is Defy's little brother but only in parts....... Kinda a more 2nd cousion looked over at family gatherings and get's the crap parts of the Thanksgiving turkey, (Sniff, sniff, tear).
So I fixed the battery problem but now I have some other problems. When I try to do the volume down power android recovery to try to update.zip. When I do this I get an error 7 meaning that I probably don't have a stock app installed from what I've read. Then I tried to do the RSD lite install and the only RSD lite I can get to recognize my phone is 3.9. I've tried 4.5.7, 4.9, and 5.0. Each of these can't recognize my phone when I plug it in. When I try to run 3.9 I get a can't find INI error. Please HELP!
Umm, real quick do you have MotoHelper installed?
Yup motohelper is installed and my computer recognizes the flash device. RSD lite 3.9 detects my phone but fails to install the sbf and no other RSD has been able to detect my phone.
Used a different computer with windows 7 32-bit and a newer version of RSD Lite and on the first try it installed the sbf!
Just like the title says. At first when I plugged my Kindle Fire in it showed up as the processor name. I installed the drivers by just using that hoping to get some sort of PC connection.
Im on Windows.
TWRP was messed up and wouldnt boot for me. (when screen worked.)
Had ICS beta. (When screenworked)
Would like to get back to stock.
Could anyone help me out?
maybe out of battery ? charge for an hour with the wall plug (pc loads very slowly)
some more information would be helpful:
what exactly have you done ?
os/bit of your computer ?
do you have newest kfu available ?
if yes please move and rename to c:\kfu (win7 64bit drivers will not install with spaces and it's easier to help cause in the tools folder are all necessary commands)

Usually it charged through the USB port on my computer but currently I put it on the wall charger to see if that would be the problem.
Well the history is this: Rooted 6.2.1, installed ICS, but after messing with TWRP my Kindle Fire arrived at a point where ICS was the ONLY OS, no backup available and TWRP being stuck at the logo not proceeding. I used the KFU to try to install a new TWRP on it but I think that might of messed it up. Im not sure to be honest theres been a lot done on this and its been a week til I had time to resolve my issue.
Windows 7 64bit
EDIT: Btw the green light from the power button never comes on. Ill plug the device in and nothing will happen until I hold the power button down for a while.
It shows up in the device manager, but only for a second to be disconnected, then the cycle repeats constantly.
Bricked to hell....I got a chuckle out of that.... Good luck man, hope you can get it fixed.

Okay. So at this point you are unable to power the device on? Even after charging it off of the wall port? (PC charging my android devices never personally worked for me)
Also have you loaded a custom kernel on? And have you checked if ADB can recognise the device?
Sent from my Kindle Fire using xda premium
Ok, all you have to do if twrp is messed up is to reflash it in fastboot. You can never Really brick a device.... See if you have adb.

Im going out to dinner but I will try that and let you know how it works after
my defy is not being recognised by any of my laptop.
while i am successfully able to charge it from a wall socket.
not even in bootloader mood it is being able to detect any the defy using any of the available usb cord.
I am using the quarks gingerbread rom 11 11 11.
please help me as fast as possible.
and one more thing i have already tried to reset the cache.
will it be possible using bluetooth to be able to get back to froyo rom(so that i am able to send it to motorola service).
and also when the usb cord is inserted white lit glows up for a sec and will then switch off.
I am able to use my defy normally otherwise.
Seems like a physical problem with either your USB port or USB cable.
If you change the cable and it doesn't work - then it's the USB port in the phone, and you'll need to repair it.
Actually not it is not even booting it is stuck at m logo.
can i change the m logo(cyanogen) to normal motorola logo so that i can take it to motorola service centre(as it is still in warranty) by installing some zip.
i am able to access the 2nd init from it.
and more thing when i go to bootloader mode and connect the usb it says usb is connected.

I tried to reboo t into recovery but the phone stoped working ! i tried to connect it with Usb caple and the charger but Its dead ! Doesnt Recognize even on pc ! any help ?!
What is the complete model of the phone? I'm guessing that you installed Gingerbread intended for a U8800Pro onto a U8800-51. Will the phone boot to a purple screen (both volume buttons + switch)?

Have you tried removing the battery and connecting the phone to a charger (without the battery) and see if anything happens? Or maybe you ran out of battery and your charger is defected? :cyclops:
Well, it happen to me also two weeks ago.If you want to know if bricked or no you can connect it with the charger via usb. (No to pc)). If start charging you it's not bricked, otherwise(... ).
-To be absolutely sure you can try connect it to pc running Linux. If os recognize the mobile HD partition you can do many things.
-At last you can use jit usb. If you don't now what's jit forget it. Look for warranty.

Try connecting USB cable from PC to your phone with out battery....
I have a problem that lasts a long time,
I tried to install ROM on my device (Motorola Dey-standard)
And that I have installed and I have not changed recharge the battery, and the battery is over, and no Rom installed.
Editor:
I found a way to charge the battery at the end, to someone who really helped me iandroid forum.
Now there is another problem,
When I connect the computer to burn an SBF to Shiitkn my situation,
The RSD does not recognize the device,
I installed appropriate drivers and then the software that matches drivers I installed RSD and RSD does not recognize the device anyway.
But but but the computer also identifies,
When I connect the device has a USB connection sound through the speakers (and when I take out the USB has USB disconnect tone),
this message:
***
And because I have Windows7 so I tried Lthkin all the updates, Shuweindos offered me,
And the same result. By the way - I tried it on three different computers (all three Windus 7) and the same result in all of them.
I'm really desperate and frustrated and do not know already what to do ..! = \
So if anyone has any idea or suggestion ..?

Can you try to boot again in Custom recovery, Wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache. Also, if your phone is also not booting, I think your battery is dead.
Take out battery and charge it on a friends phone or borrow a battery for a while.
RSD shall see your phone when in bootloader mode, then debugging on or off doesn't matter. Try another USB port, uninstall and install moto drivers, should work
Hope this will help.
