Ok so seems I've seen this asked in a few differnt theards so I fig I would just post up info once.
For uploads, yes its disabled, but there is a work around. Go to linda file mgr. Long press the file u want, select send to, then gmail (email doesn't work for some reason, has to be gmail). It will automatically bring u to a new email with the file attached ready to send. I've tested this with all types of files, test up to 7mb so far.
Now to get uploads working on websites...
Thanks, that helped a bunch. Good luck getting upload to work =D
Thank you so much for this!!!!!! I really needed it couple of days ago... I know now!
Ok so I have an update on my tests, but first let me clear up some things I've read in here.
Just installing linda file mgr will enable Downloading of any file type, but uploads though browser are disabled. Thats why i came up with this method.
So test results:
Yes you can Upload .zip files. I sent a few small ones to my other email. You can pretty much send Any file type.
Yes there is a file size limit. Only bigger files I had on my phone was .mp4 and 1 update.zip(46mb). The size limit is around 20 mb. I sent several up too and including a 19.46mb.mp4 and all went though.I then sent a 24mb.mp4 and would not go though. It just hangs in outbox. If after 30 mins (or whenever ur satisfied that it won't send) delete it out of out box, because u won't receive new emails till its deleted, cause its repeatly trying to send I guess.
Can a mod pls change the title of this thread to something like "yes you can upload any file type in gmail" or something like that so people know this is a how too and not a question. thanks.
can u download from the web or not

Yes g1 in its stock form will let u download "known file types". installing linda file mgr installs a plug in that let's you download any file type. What I am telling u how to do is upload, that is send any attachment you want though gmail.
ASTRO 1.3.11 includes this plugin for the browser download as well. question is now, How do I download pdfs and the like using the GMail program... I can preview the file. How do I save it?

You can't dl them in the gmail app, but you can go to gmail.com in ur browser, when u click on the pdf (or any other file type for that matter) it will automattically download it to ur sd card
My son asked me to write a quick'n'dirty app for him (click a button, play a sound file) so that he could annoy one of his friends (go figure!)
I did so (using Eclipse, and packaged/signed using the Export Wizard then zipaligned)- and sent it to him via gmail... but he got a parse error. I also sent it to my Fuze (on which I've installed HaRET & Eclair - thanks XDA!). Same problem: "Parse Error: There is a problem parsing the package"
So I hooked my Fuze up via USB and simply copied the file to an SD folder. The apk installs from SD via File Manager without any problem (and works as it did in the emulator). I've attached the apk, if that will help diagnosis.
Is there a known bug with the 'install from gmail'? Should I just put my personal apps onto an accessible filestore (that my son can browse to)?
Any other mechanisms to allow me to email the apk so he can save it locally? (I'm a noob regarding android - this is my first app, and he just got the phone)
Thanks in advance!
I am not sure, but I believe that when you open an attachment from an email, it gets downloaded into the "Download" folder in your phone or SD card. And then it is installed from there. Have you tried installing through SD card? i.e. place the file in the SD card and use any file manager to install it.
Thanks for taking the time to read & respond!

This is what I was doing - the install failed at this point. Gmail provides only a 'preview' button... no way to save the attachment in a generic sense -- I can see the sense in limiting stupid saves to protect noobs from themselves... but this is Android, why isn't this configurable behavior?

this is what I did, and it worked... My son also downloaded the file on his computer, and synced to SD then installed...
My main question... what the hell is Gmail doing to the file during the download process? The file is obviously OK (it works when saved/transferred via PC from the gmail attachment... just not on the 'droid version of gmail)

I had the same problem I while back when I still had my Tattoo. The problem was solved with tAttachApkInstaller (found in the market).
For some reason acer decided not to put the exchange feature onto the tablet which i found quite annoying. thankfully user member id10terrordfw found a way to fix this and posted the apks.
to get exchange working you first need root and either root explorer (paid app but worth the money) or es file explorer (free but you have to enable root privaleges inside the app. its under the settings menu)
1. navigate to system/apps and copy email.apk and email.odex
2. past these to your sd card as a backup
3. rename email.apk and email.odex to email.apk.old and email.odex.old
4. extract the files from the download and past them into the system/apps folder. (they should be Email.apk and EmailWidget.apk)
5. once done you can then go to email and try and setup an exchange account.
previously it only gave an imap and pop3 selection on the manual setup page. now it should include exchange as an option.
tested and working by me
again a big big thank you to the original poster/fixer the original thread is

I attempted these instructions but after renaming the email.apk and email.odex, the e-mail app doesn't show in the list of apps installed. I attempted to install the email app from the files provided and it won't install.
My tablet is rooted and I made the changes using Root Explorer.

you're not supposed to install them, just drop them in the correct folder
sorry my reply to this post didn't include that i extracted the files to my flash drive and copied the files from the flash drive to the system/apps folder.

Thanks.. i repeated the hole process again and after three rebooting it works now and finally i can receive my company eMails naturally.
its a shame no search feature for this mail app.
Email FCs
I was able to copy the 2 APK files and configure my Exhange account but after it opens for a few seconds, it FCs.
Anyone had the same problem?
exchange is working
2 conditions:
1. you have to add an account in settings sync choose company
2. you have o define a pin code
3. you have to encrypt your device.
i am at the encryption stage takes an hour especailly to find out if it slows down somewhat.
so before barking check.
What a load of baloney. If you have the update from 139 or higher, all you have to do,with the default email client, is go to Settings , Accounts. Tap Add Account, Choose Corporate and set it up as normal. No PIN or encryption needed.

Getting exchange to work
Hi all,
I finally got it working but I had to do just about everything in this thread.
Use the (paid) Root Explorer, all the others just won't get the (root) privileges needed to rename and paste, eventhough they might say they have. I fiddled around with this for an hour before I gave up and bought the root explorer app.
Check the permissions of the original files (email.apk and email.obex), when you have pasted your new files into the /system/apps folder the permissions will probably be different. Reset them to what the original files were otherwise your e-mail app will not show up in the apps list.
Reboot! My email app disappeared and only returned when I rebooted.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the original post in this thread!!

PIN and Encryption requirements are set by your exchange server. Requirements change depending on how your IT has the server set up.
ok if you think so. I just can tell you that it will not allow to connect to exchange as long as you have not encryptet the device, and this has nothing to do with exchange requirements, but with standard ACER policy, ie. if you use it as a company device you should encrypt the device.
I am exchange administrator using as well exchange 2007 and 2010 virtualized exchange servers and i am sure i know what i am talking about. ACTIVESYNC does not require any encryption at all.
but of corse i am talking about the standard email client coming from ACER/GOOGLE, not some other made up email client needing root and so on.
but you can believe it or not, up to you, but that is the way it works.
I have a problem, when I hit the download icon (all apps) on my nexus 7, it is always empty.
I check in my download folder and there is 9 files for 66 meg.
I check with parameter, storage, and I have 66 meg, when I hit the storage, its open download, and still empty????
What is the problem?
To solve the problem I create an shortcut with es explorer to the folder download, but I would like that my download (original) icon to work.
Help, is this a bug, or I am the only one?
My nexus is in French, (telechargement) but I try in English and it is the same problem (download)
Where is this setting for the download?
Are you going to Settings > Apps > Downloaded, and seeing nothing listed there? I have 52 apps listed there. If you go to the 'All' tab, do you see all your apps including the ones you downloaded or installed from the Play market?
I believe hes going to the Apps list form the home screen and licking on the Download app that in theory wold show any items he has downloaded in his browser.

Yes this is it.
And in parameter, storage, there is 66 mg, in download, but when I hit download, the open window tell me there is nothing.
I am not able to see my download made with my browser.
Also, I try loaderdroid and I can see only folders. I have in download folder apk, pdf, files that I cannot see except with es explorer.
I try loaderandroid, and it is the same, files are not visible in the download folder.
This is going crazy.
I try to change download folder in loaderandroid, and I can see only folders, no content, no files, in any folder!!!!!
I have es explorer, and root browser lite, with these I am able to see files in folder!!!!! with any extension.
What is the problem??????
I just remove es explorer, and root browser lite, thinking that there was maybe a conflict. No luck, without those apps I am not able to see my download......
HELP
Ok now I can confirm that my Downloads icon in All apps screen is not working.
I have apk, pdf, .rar in the /sdcard/download/ folder, and I am not able to see them with the Downloads icon in All apps.
Only way to see them is with es explorer or root browser lite.
Is there a way to reinstall this Download manager apps????
Same problem with loaderandroid. (also not able to see any files, only folders)
How are you loading the files on? Perhaps you are putting them in another downloads folder?

No they are in the good folder. Problem is look like the files are hide for any download manager.
Like I said, no problem with es explorer or root browser lite
I try removing es explorer and rootbrowser lite, and Avast, and still not able to see file in Downloads apps, and Loaderandroid.
But I need to access those files, and without a file managers like es explorer, there is no way to access them except with Downloads from all apps screen, that in my case do not work......
The downloads app isn't meant to show the contents of your downloads folder. It only shows the files you download from your browser.
I'm not sure if it gets cleared automatically at any point, never tested it.
Its the same thing as the downloads tab in chrome on a desktop PC.

Ok with which apps you can see your files already downloaded from your browser? I use firefox, dolphin, and chrome, and I cannot see the files, except with es explorer, an add-on apps. Same problems with loaderandroid a download manager.

I have tried looking for another email app that is similar, but so far no luck.
There are several things I like about the stock app
1. separation by day (today, yesterday, last 7 days etc)
2. a checkbox to select all email from that day
so far most email apps seem to lack both of these things. most seem to be headed towards everything dumped into one group and 'swipe to delete email' stuff. But sometimes you have a few dozen (or more) junk emails and just want a simple checkbox to select all and delete.
So long story short: is there an .apk for the stock samsung email app? Or does anyone know of another email app that has these same functions?
K-9 mail is pretty much the go-to for most folks, but you can check these out too

closest I've found is maildroid, but not 100% exact (though much closer than any other mail app I've found so far)

unfortunately it isn't really an .apk file-type though. I've downloaded it, and it is a .zip file. So I unzipped it and it has 2 folders, and those 2 folders have even more folders inside of them...

After you download and extract the zip go to the extracted folder and then inside it to system/app and you'll find both the stock email app as well as the exchange apk if you need that too. Try to install the email app like any other apk. If it fails to install you will have to root your phone if it's still not and use something like Root Browser to put the email app's apk in your phone's system/app folder. Then you'll need to reboot the phone to see it with all your other applications.
PS: The zip file could easily be a flashable zip through a custom recovery like TWRP but I can't say for sure so better do it manually just in case. I'm not responsible for anything you do to your phone while trying this ^^ But the worst thing that could happen is that the app won't run.
