Ok so seems I've seen this asked in a few differnt theards so I fig I would just post up info once.
For uploads, yes its disabled, but there is a work around. Go to linda file mgr. Long press the file u want, select send to, then gmail (email doesn't work for some reason, has to be gmail). It will automatically bring u to a new email with the file attached ready to send. I've tested this with all types of files, test up to 7mb so far.
Now to get uploads working on websites...
Thanks, that helped a bunch. Good luck getting upload to work =D
Thank you so much for this!!!!!! I really needed it couple of days ago... I know now!
Ok so I have an update on my tests, but first let me clear up some things I've read in here.
Just installing linda file mgr will enable Downloading of any file type, but uploads though browser are disabled. Thats why i came up with this method.
So test results:
Yes you can Upload .zip files. I sent a few small ones to my other email. You can pretty much send Any file type.
Yes there is a file size limit. Only bigger files I had on my phone was .mp4 and 1 update.zip(46mb). The size limit is around 20 mb. I sent several up too and including a 19.46mb.mp4 and all went though.I then sent a 24mb.mp4 and would not go though. It just hangs in outbox. If after 30 mins (or whenever ur satisfied that it won't send) delete it out of out box, because u won't receive new emails till its deleted, cause its repeatly trying to send I guess.
Can a mod pls change the title of this thread to something like "yes you can upload any file type in gmail" or something like that so people know this is a how too and not a question. thanks.
can u download from the web or not

Yes g1 in its stock form will let u download "known file types". installing linda file mgr installs a plug in that let's you download any file type. What I am telling u how to do is upload, that is send any attachment you want though gmail.
ASTRO 1.3.11 includes this plugin for the browser download as well. question is now, How do I download pdfs and the like using the GMail program... I can preview the file. How do I save it?

Clicking Preview doesn't download.
Also, I think only certain files can be downloaded.
I just tested with a .RAR file attached to an email and there was no Preview button and no Download button.
With a jpg attached, there were both buttons.
It's probably a security feature, so you can only download certain file types...

Yeah , must be that ... ( I sent to myself an .apk file )
Mystery Solved then !
Thanx again Paul ! and all of you guys !
anytime... FWIW, you can just change the extension to .jpg or .txt and you should be able to download it then. once you have it downloaded just change the extension back to .apk or .zip
actually... not too sure if you can change extension file types on the phone...

Good idea !
I had this problem .. found some apps ( .apk ) and wanted to install them ..
BUT .... I forgot the usb cable @ home ... so decided to email them , and then I had the second problem .. where da fu... are the "downloaded" files ???
So... I found the websharing app .. OMG .. what a great tool "online SDcard" using wifi ( maybe I'll buy the app to have full features )
And got the job done ! Files @ my SDcard ..
Finally .. I tried to replicate the same email problem using K9Mail ... but I did get the "save" option
That s the whole Tale !

You can use a terminal app to rename files : )
hi peeps.
i have a question, am i the only one having problems
while trying to download files cabs in all browsers?
by problems i mean, once i hit any download links,
the browser starts to download. but never actually
downloads the contents? thanks in advance.
mmm when you download it do you tell it what folder to store it so you can install it?
thanks for responding.
and no, i just click save and it should automatically save to my documents.
but the .zip or file downloaded regardless of size. just never even start.
theres an icon for it in my documents. but it wont launch, since it didnt
even finish dling. but this only happens in opera.
How to upload for free
Yes I'm serious and I had someone ask me and i remember I didn't know how to upload stuf so I put together this guide on two different ways.
The first way is to use your gmail account. (You can only do ten mb at a time though for either way but most update zips or roms aren't going to use that much.) Open up your mail account click compose mail then attach. It will upload the file to your email. click save now and it will save it as a draft then right click on the uploade folder and scroll to copy link location. There's your link to attach your done.
The second way is to use your windows live email account. Click new then click attach. It will let you pick something off your computer and upload it. Send the message to your self and begin to download it then go to your downloads box and right click the download and copy link. That's your download link. (you can stop the download now to )
On either of these ways you have to save the message as a draft or mail it to yourself. Cool part is none of that wait 42 seconds nonsense. Also imo gmail is faster
I have the Bell Galaxy S and sometimes email attachments will fail to download. For example I can't download an mpg or jpg file my parents sent me. However, I can download a small text file. Anyone have similar issues and does anyone know how to fix it?
I have an issue downloading "large" files.
It's weird because it seems to be source dependent as well. I was able to download a 34MB HTC sync driver yet a RAR file of 40MB wouldn't download even though the save to pop-up showed up on opera and i pick location but it never starts.
in the built in browser on the other hand i get unsuported file error show up.
I was using the Samsung Email with my hotmail account sync'd. Mpg files and jpg files failed to download. It's very frustrating...even a pdf failed to download but I know I had been able to download one before.
you guys should try this
Attachment to SD

do you have astro file manager installed? if so, there is an option to enable the browser to download unknown file types or smth like that, but it also states that it will mess up your email attachments, so if you have enabled it, you know what to do ^^
cheers
yes astro works too
Sorry, how does this affect using Samsung Email to download attachments? Does it even help? I'd really just like to know why certain files download fine as attachments to the attachment folder while others do not. How can I make it so I can download all attachments...?
it works just like your file association in windows
if you do not have an App installed that can handle the file type, it wont let you do anything with the file, not even saving it to disk
That's stupid that you can't even download the file. Thanks for the help guys.
I have tried looking for another email app that is similar, but so far no luck.
There are several things I like about the stock app
1. separation by day (today, yesterday, last 7 days etc)
2. a checkbox to select all email from that day
so far most email apps seem to lack both of these things. most seem to be headed towards everything dumped into one group and 'swipe to delete email' stuff. But sometimes you have a few dozen (or more) junk emails and just want a simple checkbox to select all and delete.
So long story short: is there an .apk for the stock samsung email app? Or does anyone know of another email app that has these same functions?
K-9 mail is pretty much the go-to for most folks, but you can check these out too

i posted this link because most of the apps are what the users tastes are. Sometimes you just have to try them out to see for yourself

k-9 doesn't really look like the stock email app though =/
closest I've found is maildroid, but not 100% exact (though much closer than any other mail app I've found so far)

unfortunately it isn't really an .apk file-type though. I've downloaded it, and it is a .zip file. So I unzipped it and it has 2 folders, and those 2 folders have even more folders inside of them...

After you download and extract the zip go to the extracted folder and then inside it to system/app and you'll find both the stock email app as well as the exchange apk if you need that too. Try to install the email app like any other apk. If it fails to install you will have to root your phone if it's still not and use something like Root Browser to put the email app's apk in your phone's system/app folder. Then you'll need to reboot the phone to see it with all your other applications.
PS: The zip file could easily be a flashable zip through a custom recovery like TWRP but I can't say for sure so better do it manually just in case. I'm not responsible for anything you do to your phone while trying this ^^ But the worst thing that could happen is that the app won't run.
