I don't think holding down the power button is the greatest suggestion if you want to just reboot the device.
If you hold down the power button, what that does is it forces the device to shut down. Keep it held and your device will power back on. That would seem like a reboot. But it's the equivalent of pulling the power form your PC to shutdown and then booting it up again. It's simply not the proper way to shutdown or reboot.
Natively, there's no way to easily reboot your device. Most custom ROMs have a reboot option in the power menu. If you don't want to flash custom ROMs, there are apps that let you reboot. Just search "reboot" in Google Play.

You can also use the reboot command in terminal emulator if the phone is rooted.... and you just made me reboot my phone.

Safe Mode temporarily disables all applications that have been installed via the Android Market. Performing this troubleshooting step is necessary to determine whether a 3rd party application is the cause of an Operating System / Application issue. Safe Mode should always be performed prior to a hard (factory) reset.
Enable Safe mode

Press and hold the Power button.
Select Power off.
Select OK.
Press and hold the Power button until the Google logo appears then release.
With the Google logo onscreen, press and hold the Volume down key.
Continue to hold the Volume down key until Safe mode appears in the lower-left of the unlock screen then release.
This may take up to 45 seconds.

Easy method to do this!
1. When the cell is powered on, press and hold the power key.
2. Now press and hold the "Power Off" menu.
3. Safe mode!

[Q] Power button not working

Hi,
after unlocking and rooting my Nexus 4 I flashed the franco-kernel. I did these steps with the ToolKit. But now when I start my phone I can press the power button once and it offers me to shut it down. After that there is no reaction when pressing the power button. I tried to reset the Nexus but I still get the same error. Can anyone help? Thanks!
EDIT: My nexus just turned off the screen and I was able to reactive it by pushing the powerbutton. What works all the time is shutting down the phone by long pressing.
From your initial post it sounds like it might be sticking..

I don't think that it's hardware related. It might be a software issue. Sometimes the screen stays on for ever unless I open an app and close it again. It seems the phone doesn't know what to do when the button is pressed.
EDIT: When connected to PC I can use the button only to power off the phone. I can't wake it...weird

Reboot loop

I have had the Nexus 4 for 3 days.
4 hours ago it started rebooting all the time.
Every 5 seconds it was rebooting until I finally could do a factory reset.
The factory reset didn't work in the boot loader because I just got a little android picture with a text under it which said: "No Command"
Now my phone is working again and doesn't reboot anymore but if I try to get into the recovery mode it still shows just the little android logo with the text "No Command"
There isn't a menu to choose a factory reset.

See picture above!
Is the mobile defect?

So first I turn off my phone then I hold power + volume down.
Then I scroll down to Recovery Mode en press the power button.
Then I get those little android pic with the No command text and then i can do whatever I want but the menu doesn't appear.

Nevermind I got it!
I was just not Android enough to be that fast. :silly:
Thanks for your fast replies!
Could also someone tell me what that Reboot loop was?
Is that a software or a hardware mistake?

Get out of Download mode?

I want to check the counter on my S4. Is there another way to get out of Download Mode besides pulling battery? I hate fooling with taking S4 out of case to get to battery.
Thanks

Holding the power button for about 10 seconds will turn the phone off completely. Once off you can just hold the power button again, and hopefully you'll boot up fine.

How to boot in to recovery mode?

First Moto device coming from Samsung Galaxy S4. Thanks.

with device off keep pressing power and volume up for a 3-4 seconds until recovery shows up.
What worked for me is:
Press and hold volume down and the power button
Use volume rocker to select Recovery Mode
Phone will reboot and you will see Andy on his back.
Press and hold power button and then press volume up.

Is the phone powered on or off initially with your first step?
Power off and then do those steps
