Hi XDA,
I've recently bought 2 Nexus 4 in the UK (is the plural Nexii?)
I am somewhat annoyed to find that data connectivity on both is Terrible:
- Neither Nexus will connect properly to my DLINK DSL-2780 through WIFI.
After some searching on the Web, this apparently plagues more owners of Nexus 4 in the UK. Of course, Google is blaming DLINK, DLINK is blaming Google... Both phones do connect, but there is hardly any data throughput.
On the other hand, a friend of mine CAN connect without any problems using his Nexus 7 (which has a different Kernel, he's got 3.1-something and my phones are on 3.4.something. I also tested one of my Nexus 4 on a public WIFI: no problems connecting to non-DLINK WIFI so far...
- Mobile data has similar issues: my nexus 4 does connect to my vodafone data connection, but the connection keeps dropping (i.e., browsing works ok-ish, but streaming is virtually impossible. This should not be because of bad signal (my previous phone still streams fine and never had any problems).
Basically, I've read about similar problems with Nexus 4 and even Jelly Bean in general, so I was planning to do a little experiment this weekend:
Since I have 2 identical phones with identical problems, I though I would flash only 1 of the 2 with a different ROM. However, I don't want to flash any ROM blindly (don't have too much time lately) so I was hoping if there's anyone here on XDA that has any experience with the latest batch of Nexus 4 being distributed in the UK.
- Did anyone recently receive a Nexus 4 in the UK without data problems? If so, which Baseband and Kernel are you on?
- What would be the 'cleanest' ROM to use to compare the stock firmare to?
- and of course, if anyone has any bright ideas to figure this out, or suggestions to make my experminent more useful, feel free to suggest
By the way, I did do a lot of searching on this problem already, and I did find many similar reports, but no solutions. Hence my little experiment.
For those that are wondering: I'm on:
Baseband: M9615A-CEFWMAZM-2.0.1700.33
Kernel: 3.4.0-perf-ge039dcb
Build #: JOP40D

I've searched around a bit andfound nothing on this topic. So I'm wondering if my epic's wifi radio is bad or something. Or if a new router may fix it. 500-1000kbps down and 3000-5000kbps up.
Background: I traded in my droid x for this after coming to the realization that it would never get true custom roms. When the X first came out it suffered the same issue but was reported all over the net and patched almost instantly and pulling ~15mbps down like it should. So unless their is a compatibility issue specific to the epic and my linksys E1000 I believe (bought at BB 2-3 years ago) I think it may be my phone. I can't find anyone else reporting this issue, wife's iPhone still connecting fine, laptops connecting fine, after patch the droid X connected fine, not sure what else it would be.
However, I am already considering a new router with mimo, dual band and usb support. Two smart phones, two personal laptops, two work laptops, a wii, and soon a new htpc or google tv just seems to be over working the poor little linksys and constantly needs reset anyway... If you guys think that could fix my epic problem ill get one sooner than later and not bother harrassing sprint.
If anyone else is suffering of was able to fix, please share!
Thanks in advance! You guys are da bomb and much appreciated!!!

Oh yeah. With other devices I full connectivity everwhere in my house (1000sqft condo) even outside a little ways. With the Epic, I get one bar downstairs two bars upstairs and USUALLY tthree when sitting right in front of it at my desk... Thanks again

I'm running an E3000 and have zero problems whatsoever - pushing about 12Mbit in some cases. A few questions: Do you have WiFi N enabled? Mixed-mode? What channel? (The Evo, which has the same WiFi chipset, does NOT work well on channel 1, for instance).
Thank you very much for your response. It was very helpful! For some reason i didn't even think to mess with my router settings. I tried bunch of different stuff and what i think i found is that my router is not broadcasting well in wireless N. My best results for my epic ended up being wireless G only mode and channel 1. Now getting 4.5-5mbps down and 2-2.5mbps up on my phone. Which i can live with until i get a new router! Thanks again!
I am getting 10+ Mbps and I have a G router, I am going to be picking up and N router which the Epic can handle, cant wait.
I'm seeing the ability to share pics and videos in the specs.
We can't currently do it with our Galaxy Nexus to and from the SGS III (and I haven't been able to test it with any other devices) so is there something new in Android Beam coming with the Nexus 4?
In other words, can we get some wifi direct lovin?!
I think not,
My guess is (I have experienced the same thing) that the S3 is not capable of reviecing so large files via NFC.
and my simple guess is that if the S3 would have CyanogenMOD or something else it would work..
Shame since I have so many more friends with SGSIIIs than GNexii ... I actually don't know anyone with a GNex here where I live but I have three good pals with SGSIIIs.
Where exactly have you seen the sharing in specs (was it just in soecs or mentioned as well?)

The Galaxy Nexus can send pictures via NFC. I tried it out with my Sprint Galaxy Nexus & GSM Galaxy Nexus. It'll take a while, but NFC picture transfers do work (I haven't tried videos though).

"Nexus 4 comes with Android Beam so you can easily share photos, videos, contacts, apps and more with a tap. Just touch two NFC-enabled Android devices back-to-back, then beam whatever's on the screen to your friend." From http://www.google.com/nexus/4/#camera.
I think it is the same old Android Beam though I was hoping it was something newer that would allow sharing with the GSIII. Good old proprietary Samsung. Google should have asked that NFC sharing was more standardized but true to Android platform tenets, Samsung went and made it better. Can't really blame them.
NFC only send very small data packets (~20kb). When it "shares over NFC", what they mean is the NFC initiates a Bluetooth connection, and sends the file via that.
I really feel sorry for myself for believing in those Sam****'s commercials. I need to stop believing in them real quick.

They (SGSIIIs) do everything they say in the commercials ... This is about the Nexus line and how it needs to get on the WiFi direct bandwagon or make it optional so that we Nexus folks can send large files with all NFC enabled devices--particularly the SGS III, which happens to be the most popular.
If the Nexus 4 somehow does this, I'd definitely go pick one up. That's why I want to know what's up with them.

We'll I have a Nexus 4, and attempted to send a small photo I grabbed from the internet to my brother-in-law's Galaxy Note 2, and both phones respond to the NFC detection. My phone says "Touch to Beam", and I tap the screen, and the Galaxy Note 2 says "Incoming beam.." But after 10 to 15 secs, says "Incoming beam failed".
I tried it with my wife's phone (SG3), and the same problem happened. This is very disheartening.. Don't get me wrong, the Nexus 4 rocks, love how smooth, and clean the O/S. Just the fact that I can't take advantage of Android Beaming to another Android device sucks at the moment. Knowing the SG3 is almost everywhere now.
Hey thanks for checking that out!
So it looks like either S-Beam won't play nice with non-Galaxy S devices and/or the Nexus 4 doesn't use WiFi direct to actually send the file like S-Beam does.

You know I've been playing around with NFC and Android Beam the past few days too and I'll share some of my results.
I've been able to "beam" links, youtube videos, and a picture. The devices I have available to try were my Nexus 4, a Galaxy Nexus (running 4.2 stock), and a Nexus S (running CM10 stable). All worked like it was supposed to. I did try to send a song to my brother's Nexus S, but it did the "Incoming beam..." thing that JayCapo pointed out. It eventually opened Google Music, but it never transferred.
Dunno, yet. Will try more and different scenarios.
I've only tried using Android Beam to receive a photo, which works fine, and that's with another Nexus4 device.
As for wifi direct, the option is there, but I've not tried it yet.
In the wifi settings page, press the menu (three dots?) in the bottom right and select wifi direct.

Eeeek WiFi direct just kind of sits there not doing anything. I can connect to devices but the option to share doesn't seem to show up in the gallery or anywhere else. That's for another thread.
Hey guys,
has anybody experience with Miracast on the Nexus 10 or Android 4.2? I'm going to get an Adapter for my TV and I'm not sure how that works... haven't found any Miracast-related options in the settings app, and I don't know how the whole stuff with wifi is working (is the bandwidth of wifi high enough for that high resolution? How will the Nexus scale its 2650px down to the 1920 of my TV? ...).
Thanks
Currently nexus 10 is not miracast capable. Many people think it will be later, but since there might be bus bandwith issues i dont think it will.

Practical testing: Miracast with Nexus 10
There was quite of bit of discussion/speculation back on Nov-Dec on whether, how, and when Nexus 10 would support Miracast. I recently did some testing to support an app I'm developing, and wanted to: give an update on practical test results, and see if anyone has any further information (since none is forthcoming from google so far).
I tested Miracast links using Netgear's PTV3000 (Push2TV):
Samsung S3 - WORKS, after an upgrade to their latest PTV3000 firmware (v.2.2.9)
Google Nexus 10 - Does not work.
Google Galaxy Nexus - Does not work.
This is consistent with a recent posting on AndroidCentral ("Netgear PTV3000 gets a firmware update, now officially supports host of Android devices"). I'm interested in running on as many devices as possible, including the Nexus tablets and phones, but still can't find any information on plans and timing for Nexus 10, for example.
Anyone?
Two things that I would enjoy having on my nexus4 is being able to see the metadata on my cars head unit while streaming music from my phone. And to be able to access the LTE network that TMobile has in Kansas City where I live.
The Bluetooth issue happened when Google changed the Bluetooth stack going from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I used to be able to see track info before the 4.2.2 update running CM10. Once CM 10.1 arrived with googles Bluetooth changes I lost the updated avrcp functionality.
With the LTE side of this being simuliar, losing functionality with the 4.2.2/CM10.1 update. I'm wondering what the drawbacks of reverting back to a 4.2.1/CM10 on the nexus 4 to gain these features back would be.
Let's start a discussion here, any one else I'm the same boat here? I know I would love to have access to tmobile's LTE here in Kansas City where I'm at as well as the old Bluetooth functionality of metadata back again.
What are Tue thoughts of the community?

There is no CM10 for the Nexus 4 since 10 is based on Android 4.1 and the N4 was never designed to run it.

I guess that answers that.
About to make the gut churning leap into the chasm of smart phones from the safety of my old nokia dumb'n'easy phone, i have just about settled on purchasing the Razr M due to reasonably hi specs, supposed good build quality and convenient pocket size. But then i came across a lot of posts on various websites, with people saying the antenna(s) are rubbish in this phone, they can't maintain good wifi or cell reception if they hold the phone a certain way and/or suffer from call drops and text message failures when other similar phones have no problems.
Are these just isolated problems on some phones or is it a general design fault? Have motorola done anything to rectify these problems with s/w updates or re-design? And are these problems enough to put me off buying or are they minor flaws in an otherwise good phone? I have been trawling the web for about 10 days now trying to find out these answers and it seems i can't find anything on this subject since early this year.
Any info i can get will be gratefully received i don't want to spend a sh1t ton of cash on a lemon (or an apple for that matter!). Thanks.
I live out in the country and have no issue with reception or wifi... I did a while back but that was due to my router... Even when I'm in areas that no one else has signal (like areas that have the"end of state maintenance" sign)I still manage to get at least 3g

Thanks for that, good to know. I wonder was/is the problem a hardware issue and only on some devices?
Some of the older software versions would disconnect my BT headset when on wifi, but I have not had that issue in the more recent updates.
Moto phones are noted for their radio & audio performance. I see no problems here. Get the X if you want state of the art.
Thanks all for opinions. I pulled the trigger just now. I will update this thread with any info i have after i use it for a while.
