Back of phone hot when charging in car - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I received my Nexus 4 in the mail yesterday and I have been charging it while in the car sometimes. Has anyone experienced the back of their Nexus 4 becoming hot while charging the phone inside a car? I'm using a Griffin Car charger and an HTC USB cord from one of my old phones (I've used the charger and cord for other phones, MyTouch 4G and HTC Sensation 4G, without a problem. When I charge the phone with the LG charger or any other wall charger (inside my house) the back of the phone doesn't seem to get warm. Could it be the USB Cord is the issue? Didn't think that would be a problem but I'll try a different one tomorrow. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

did you use your phone while charging? i'am thingking about navigation?!
mine gets a bit warm while charging, but not noteable if it is uncovert, and it gets warm while google maps runs, both together makes it quite warm, plus, putting it in a carholder where its back is covert...
but nothing you should worry about, other phones do the same...

You don't need to worry until the battery gets above 60°C. Li-po batteries can be damaged above that. Monitor the temp while charging in the car

My back of phone is hot whenever I'm charging! Lol

What app do you use to monitor battery temperature? I've never really paid attention to the battery temperature before, this is also the first device I've had without a removalable battery.

After further review, I have realized it just isn't warm when I'm charging it in my car. It also happens when I'm using it (sending texts, phone calls and browsing) and when its charging in the house. The temperature will get to around 51C (used the system tuner app). Has anyone else experienced the back of their Nexus 4 getting warm during normal use and charging? Just trying to figure out if this is a defect or it's normal for the device.

It's normal if you're using stock voltage. I undervolted my Nexus 4 and it rarely gets above 35°C off of the charger.

How do you "undervolt" it? I just picked the phone up off the charger (after not using it for ten minutes) and the battery temperature was 36C. This was using the charger that came with the phone.

You have to unlock the bootloader, root, install a kernel that supports undervolting and lower the voltage that the CPU uses. You see, each chip is different. When creating the stock kernel they figure out what voltage range all phones will work on, then add some to be safe. The higher voltage = more heat. You experiment a little to see how low you can go and have a stable device and leave the settings. It's easier than it sounds.

I was having the same issue and I never thought of lowering the voltage. The thing runs like butter anyway, so it won't hurt for it to slow down just a tad so it doesn't get to 50C.
Thanks.

Yes that's normal, but you said it gets very hot, and again, read my first reply to your post and tell me what you see, then we can tell you if your heating is normal or not.
make sure you turn off WiFi when you are charging the battery on your SNS
else it heats up really really fast and hot
that was the same on the SGS

It seems common behavior on the Nexus. My NS got up to 105° F last night (to be fair, it was under my pillow). I've simply taken to turning it off when I charge at night, but seeing as my NS is a glorified PMP (and therefore I don't have to worry about texts or other notifications on it), you might feel differently about simply turning it off.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
It's interesting to note that the adapter for the Nexus S actually charges at(and I'm sure I'm getting my terminology wrong, sorry electricity guys!) .7AMP vs the 1AMP that other smart phones charges at such as the Nexus One.
This might account for the seemingly longer charge times we've had reported, and why you might be seeing increased heating from using a third-party more generalized charger. Whether or not there's any truth to the idea that it may cause permanent damage to your device, I don't know. I would greatly appreciate it if someone more knowledgable about this kind of thing would post, as I'm considering buying a second charger/car charger. In any which case, I personally take what Best Buy/T-Mobile/anyone's first level support tell me with a great big grain of salt.
google maps heating phone up
I just had a similar experience with my Nexus S getting really warm while using Google Maps this morning. I usually use Google Maps in Car Mode with traffic overlayed as I drive to and from work (~30-40 min. drive). This morning I noticed the phone got really warm by the end of my commute, which did not happen the previous 3 or 4 times I have used Maps in this same fashion. I will take nxt's advice and check the temperature on the phone next time it heats up again. Does anyone know what is a "safe" upper temperature limit for the phone or battery? I've read that higher temperatures are detrimental to the life of a lithium battery.
Other than this one time, I have not experienced any other high temperature issues with my Nexus S in the ~1 week that I've had it.
Thanks ahead of time for any help/advice. This is my very first smartphone and I am eagerly trying to absorb as much information as I can about it so I can determine what is normal/abnormal behavior. I am loving my Nexus S so far!
I don't think third party chargers are to blame. In fact, I'd go as far as to say the opposite is true. I read that the shorter data pins on the official charger cause the device to enter a faster charging state, as compared to the usb cable or third party chargers.
I've yet to feel my nexus s get warm at all... during charging w/ wifi on. Using samsung wall charger, using LG wall charger, using computers w/usb cable.
My NS gets hotter to the touch than my Vibrant ever did, but when I check the battery temperature it is never as high as my Vibrant used to get.
When charging in the car and running Navigation + streaming music the Vibrant would hit almost 125F whereas my NS tops out at 110F.

Today was the first time I've felt my Nexus S get super heated when charging. Never happened before. I've been charging the same exact way since owning the phone back in December.

it depends on the usage
when i download TONS of stuff via 3G or WiFi it heats up a lot, only if i have it plugged in to the charger, else it does not heat up
However! if you check carefully, or better yet, if you take out the back cover
you will notice it is not the battery that is hot, but the area beneath the SIM card that is hot, which points to be the CPU

I see, thanks. Will keep in mind.
FWIW, I have been charging my Nexus S with the Nexus One charger (1 amp) since day 1 - I can't stand how short the stock charging cable and wall adapter were. I haven't had any unusual temperature spikes when charging at all. I don't even really notice it getting warm under heavy load - unlike the Nexus One with the aluminum casing that conducted heat very well. Edit: I also leave WiFi on with a No Sleep policy when I am at home and I've not encountered any warming issues either.
I would be careful if I ware you.. high heat is dangerous for the battery, it might swallow and even a leak if you will keep using your device constantly at high temperatures.
I Have never had any problems with heat and I have been using it a lot.
btw, I use stock rom..

Weirdness when plugged into wall?

Anyone else having issues with the phone when it is charging on the wall? Screen transitions get really choppy and touch screen sensitivity goes bonkers.
This is driving me crazy!

I've had this with CM7 as well. It's super annoying.
I've had this with most if not all Roms I've used. It depends where I plug my charger in honestly. Some places the touchscreen goes crazy some places it doesn't. Why? Hell if I know lol. I was starting to wonder if I was the only one with this problem.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I have had this problem before, but it is gone now. Could never figure out the cause...
It was never specific to CM for me. I found that at times, setting setCPU to clock up to max (not necessarily OC) when charging helped a little.
But for some reason the problem disappeared for me. Not sure why to be honest.
My phone only lags when I have the sd card mounted to a pc
It happens to me when I use one of the chargers I bought from Walmart. I think its a grounding issue.

Happens to me on Cm roms with HTC charger.
Its an issue with the charger. I have two completely differnet phones and the same issue happens on both when I use a certain charger. It charges fine but touchscreen goes to crap. Both phones work fine on a different one.

+1. Works fine with the OEM charger. But a cheap charger I got on eBay that charges a battery at the same time that it charges the phone always causes the touch screen to become completely unusable.
Not the charger. I have the same issue with my evo connected to the stock charger. It doesn't usually happen right away. In fact most times for me it isn't until charging us complete before I see a slow down.
I could be mistaken, but i believe it's a heat issue. The heat from charging the battery causes the CPU to enter a slower, low power state. This in turn will result in everything, not just the screen, becoming laggy. I've also noticed the same effect on hot days during the summer, if I let the evo get hot (like leaving it in a poorly ventilated area or heavy CPU/graphics usage), I get the same slow down.
I have not tried using setcpu but I suspect that thermal protection will automatically override user defined clock speeds.
Of course, all this is just my best guess, and I have nothing to prove it either way.

Agree & Disagree.
From the world testing I've done I completely agree that heat is a cause that can cause the phone to act incredibly slow and unresponsive. I have accidentally left my phone in the car during summer, come back and hardly anything works
My disagreement is that I do also believe that the charger/charging effects the phone. Using the stock HTC charger I get an sporadic screen, sometimes immediately and other times delayed, while charging. It almost always shows up after a full night of charging (phone could/should be warm here, right?) but the moment I unplug the device it becomes immediately responsive (heat hasn't changed).
I don't know what the root cause is, heat I think is a contributor, but either way I just deal
I believe it's due to poor grounding, which affects the touchscreen.
Ive had this with cheap chargers

yep - its a grounding issue with the touchscreen caused by using a cheap charger OR a cheap cable OR a bad cable. It is NOT a problem with your phone. Get a nice OEM cable or a nice OEM charger and you'll be in good shape.

I remember when the Evo first came out there were grounding issues with the screen (hardware 0001), i.e. if you put it down on a bed or couch, you couldn't get the notification bar to pull down. I would also estimate that there are still some minor residual grounding issues still around. I get it every now and then as well, I'm also using the stock HTC cable and charger. However, that battery theory is a pretty smart thought.

and perhaps you're cable is bad. stock cables do go bad, I've seen a few people with bad cables. They can fail in numerous ways.
If it is the cable or charger, why does it not happen on the stock ROM? Temp makes no difference.
EDIT: This DOES NOT happen with the stock ROM!
Sent via XDA App
Same cable, same charger (both stock), same outlet, does not happen with the stock ROM, but it does with CM7. I've just tested this quite a bit. Temperature is not a problem, either.
It happens to me after the battery hits 100% (on a non-sbc kernel) using stock cables, and stock chargers and my computer's USB for charging. It never happens on the stock kernel.
I'm not sure anyone ever knew for sure what caused the rash of these back in June/July, but I do know when I created the first FPS hacked kernel back then, it mysteriously cured some people's touch screen problems even though my modification didn't even remotely have anything to do with charging/touch input code.

Samsung Galaxy S2 very hot GPS + charging

Hi guys,
I used GPS for first time with my new SGS2. I was surprised how phone was hot. I had SGS but I never had any problem. GPS program is Sygic, I used same car charger, which I used for SGS. I drove home maybe 10min and phone was realy very hot, the screen also, back of the phone. Do you have same problem or do you think my phone is faulty?
Mine after 30 min surfing the internet is very hot (next to the camera and screen on top). Also i am worried about that...
Enviado desde mi GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk
Yes this I have same, but it is still OK compare to GPS and charging.
GPS + charge is always a hit or miss. My SGS was a little better, but my HTC Touch Pro 2 got blazing hot. All depends on the device, I'm more worried about the long term effects of such temperatures to the camera, which is in very close proximity.
I noticed when using sygic with gps that the battery continues to drain even when using the car charger.

There's a good answer to that. I had a cheap generic USB car charger and noticed it drained quicker than it charged. The reason is down to a pin on the USB connector. Your phone will only charge at rate it would if plugged to a PC. Buy a genuine Samsung car charger (about a tenner) and it uses fast/full charge. I think they remove/link pins which tell it how to charge. I also found it doesn't get as hot with a genuine charger

True is, I have non original car charger, but I bought some cheap one. Never charge my SGS, just kept at the same level. So I am going to buy original from Samsung.

GPS on SGS is a hit or a miss though, barely use that phone for gps
Don't listen to peopel telling you it's the charge that is causing the phone to heat up.
thats just nonsense.
Its the 1.2ghz cpu.. and the close tight body of the phone.
I had the Atrix, and after 10-15 of heavy usage or just gps, the bottom portion near the sim area would be hot to the touch.
Think about it this way.
Why do laptops even in such tight close spaces have some fan going? because things get hot.
Stop the fan on a laptop and let the heatsink just do the work and it will burn u.
Its just the thep hone despensing the heat.
I personally dont' think phones with 1.2ghz processors should be made so small, and not have some time of active cooling.
Seriously even if my NAS Server with a marvell 1.2ghz CPU has some type of cooling fan!
this is just ridiculous
Mine also tends to heat up. I then always take off the case and try to get it cooled down somehow. But i've experienced it myself: half an hour gps+navigation=processor hot as hell and battery drained down from 85% to 15%...hope the latest firmware update fixes this...and btw: heat is not very good for any kind of battery. It makes them drain faster afaik!
Cheers

Well I have a 1mA charger which I used with my HTC Desire to charge it during driving and navigating. It worked well with my HTC Desire (the HTC Desire also needs a pin connection, otherwise it won't charge fast enough during navigating) but the same charger did not work very well with the SGS2. Yesterday during navigation the battery level dropped slowly... Even though I used the same charger as I used with my HTC Desire.

The competion of thickness between samsung and apple,or other android os manufucture like S.E has crushed samsung's mind.To elicit applause, the Korean giant just sacrificed the stability to make a both thin and powerful phone.
It's hard to say the choice is wise or not.But we can already find this company is becoming upset due to the pressure from the opponents.

Yes, as a matter of fact, right now i am trying to charge through USB with the same drainage.
Switch the phone off for a while!... let the sucker charge.
And the problem is not always!
this is normal, already been posted. the charger is limited to 650 mA on wall power, and 450 mA on USB power. so it is easily possible to pull more power than is going into the device, say if you are gaming or pushing the device hard with navigation or similar.
next time this happens, turn off the screen for 10 minutes as a test, then come back, and see if the charge increased at all. it likely will increase.

Edit: i also have read in many places that using task killer actually cause more harm than good bcoz it disturbs the proper sequece of how android shuts down an app or process..and cleans up the memory..this will result some of the apps or process to stay awake or come awake again when it sould be sleeping...

For me the issue was the wifi manager was somehow awake and consuming power..hence phone was hot and battery drain while charging. Check your battery usage graph and see if your phone is awake when it should not be..and pin down the rouge app or process..

I really dont understand why Samsung keeps supplying this crappy charger. Desire Z and iPhone 4 both came with 1000mAh ones. Super fast charge on both! Come on sammy... This isnt a 900mAh feature phone. This is a big battery hogger dual core with a large battery inside!

I am using HTC's 1000mA charger and still, this happens to some extent, only much less.Try overclocking the hell out of it and then start benchmarking.Charging?Hell no.You may even need to draw power from the house next to yours!

I read somewhre in this forum that samsung has set a limit of max amperage on this device to below 700 miliamp( cant remember the exact value for ac charging and usb charging) so thts why the charger is rated to 700mah

That's right, but if the charger was 1000mA like HTC's it would continue to draw those 700mA it needs even while in use.You wouldn't notice any difference at all with it charging while not being used, but when screen is on there is a difference.
They limited charge current to 650 mA in the driver code, so that's why they use a 0.7 A charger. Using a higher output won't help unless someone compiles a new kernel.
I charge the phone until 100%. When unplug, it immediately drops to 85%-90%. On one occassions, it dropped to 40%! What's wrong with it?

Thanks. But...i tried charging it whilst it was turned off. The icon showed 100%. I then unplug and switched it on. The same happened. So, it should not be Apps related. Right?

I suggest you do a simple trouble shooting...charge your phone to 100% while it is off.
Than unplug, switch on your phone and just leave it for half hour or an hour without doing anything.
Than swith your display on...and go to settings
Select about phone..
Go to battery use and tap on the graph.
It will show you a few horizontal lines.
Make sure your screen on and awake time bars coincide nicely.
While your screen is off your awake bar should be very very minumum... most of the high battery drain casses will have a very short screen on bar but a solid long line of awake time.
This is normally due to some rougue app or process...and you have to narrow it down.
If your graph looks normal..than you could be having a defective battery or in worst case a defective hardware.

The max of 0.7 amps is a partykiller... When in my car, I'd like to have my phone record everything (dailyroads voyager as dashcam), while navigating... Definitely discharging there while on stock carcharger! So I will have to choose when I'm going on holiday (12 hours drive...)

I had a same problem before. But after I reflash 2-3 times (literom 1.5 for now) it's gone, and charging normal on car and wall charger while gaming or navigate.

Somebody tell me Wtf just happened

So my n7 ran out of power I turned it on and my wallpaper had been reset then voltage control started up and the whole tablet went crazy and the screen went solid grey?!?!
Edit: seems to be voltage control when it starts on boot. Anybody else have this problem?

I've just had a funny do with mine.. playing games while plugged in to charge, seems I was using more power than it was drawing tho and the battery went - but when it did, the screen went a scrolling grey (bit like the old loading screens on a ZX Spectrum!) and making a crackly static noise. Plugged the plug to kill it, and I'll give it time to charge properly before turning it back on again
Same here I was using my nexus 7 while it was plugged on my PC and looks like my battery was discharging instead of charging looks like the tablet itself eat more battery then a charge would give x)

For a proper charge it needs 2 amps. Your computer only gives half an amp.
Of course it will discharge if you only supply it with a quarter of the power.
Seems to be that when overclocked it needs battery to work properly!

the exact same thing happened with mine. I was using motorola charger while playing games, and encountered the grey screen with the static noise. I panicked for a sec there!! After all I've only been using it for a day.
Charged it using my HTC charger and turned it back on. I checked the battery monitor widget and found out that my motorola charger delivered very little charge to the device. Googled about it and read somewhere that N7 is quite picky in terms of charger.
They're very picky about chargers. One charger that works really well and is available off the shelf for $25 is the Asus transformer prime charger available as places like office depot, and other retailers, probably staples and best buy.
The power spec of 2 amps required is correct, but even with 2 amp and higher output specs on the charger, many USB chargers with equal or higher specs still will only very slowly trickle charge because the N7 is so finicky about power sources.

First time it happened to me I thought I bricked the thing. I wasnt even using it and when I came back to take it off the charger it the tablet was flipping out (im guessing i had some weird battery drain and a charger problem at the same time).
Shouldn't the tablet shut down before it gets that low on battery? It would've saved me the almost heart attack I had when I saw this happening.
