Strange Issue!!
when my phone is low on battery and i try to charge it (with the original ac charger or the usb); sometimes (almost half the times) the phone instead of charging .... DISCHARGES!!
i have tried all possible fixes. tried the battery calibration apps also. but it gets ok for a day and then back.
i can only charge my phone while its switched off!
Details:
1. on stock TW4
2. 3 pages on home
3. total widgets= 6 ( advanced task killer; digital clock; 2- circle launcher; quick battery; weather)
4. i kill all tasks always before charging!
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG? BTW I HAVE TRIED TO REMOVE ALL WIDGETS AND CHARGE ALSO! NO LUCK!
HELP!!
It sound like you might have a faulty charger, have you tried charging from your notebook, it`s a bit slower at 400mah compared to 650mah for the mains charger.

Yes, as a matter of fact, right now i am trying to charge through USB with the same drainage.
Switch the phone off for a while!... let the sucker charge.
And the problem is not always!
this is normal, already been posted. the charger is limited to 650 mA on wall power, and 450 mA on USB power. so it is easily possible to pull more power than is going into the device, say if you are gaming or pushing the device hard with navigation or similar.
next time this happens, turn off the screen for 10 minutes as a test, then come back, and see if the charge increased at all. it likely will increase.

My problem is when I'm not using the phone at all and the screen is off. Tried charging through both wall and usb charger.
The only way right now I can charge my phone is while switched off.
I always kill all apps before charging also... Still!
And if its charging while on, screen off, it gets hot also.

Edit: i also have read in many places that using task killer actually cause more harm than good bcoz it disturbs the proper sequece of how android shuts down an app or process..and cleans up the memory..this will result some of the apps or process to stay awake or come awake again when it sould be sleeping...

I once had this problem..after charging for 6 hours battery was only at 60% and phone was hot..found out that although the screen was off..the phone was wide awake all the time. For me the issue was the wifi manager was somehow awake and consuming power..hence phone was hot and battery drain while charging. Check your battery usage graph and see if your phone is awake when it should not be..and pin down the rouge app or process..
Hope this helps..

I've got a similar problem, while charging in a car using the SGS2 for navigation. BTW, what is the maximum Amper I can charge the phone without damaging it?
I really dont understand why Samsung keeps supplying this crappy charger. Desire Z and iPhone 4 both came with 1000mAh ones. Super fast charge on both! Come on sammy... This isnt a 900mAh feature phone. This is a big battery hogger dual core with a large battery inside!

That's right, but if the charger was 1000mA like HTC's it would continue to draw those 700mA it needs even while in use.You wouldn't notice any difference at all with it charging while not being used, but when screen is on there is a difference.
They limited charge current to 650 mA in the driver code, so that's why they use a 0.7 A charger. Using a higher output won't help unless someone compiles a new kernel.
I charge the phone until 100%. When unplug, it immediately drops to 85%-90%. On one occassions, it dropped to 40%! What's wrong with it?

I suggest you do a simple trouble shooting...charge your phone to 100% while it is off.
Than unplug, switch on your phone and just leave it for half hour or an hour without doing anything.
Than swith your display on...and go to settings
Select about phone..
Go to battery use and tap on the graph.
It will show you a few horizontal lines.
Make sure your screen on and awake time bars coincide nicely.
While your screen is off your awake bar should be very very minumum... most of the high battery drain casses will have a very short screen on bar but a solid long line of awake time.
This is normally due to some rougue app or process...and you have to narrow it down.
If your graph looks normal..than you could be having a defective battery or in worst case a defective hardware.

Has anyone else seen this? From 100 to 90% the power just drops almost instantaneously but after 90% its normal.
Already been brought up, a lot.
Apparently when your phone charges up it stops once it reaches ~100% and begins discharging, even though it is still on the charger. People will turn their phone off after a full charge and charge for an additional 20min to an hour before they get another green LED. People have reported much longer battery life when doing this, but it is a pain in the ass.

Hmm i tried and it acted the same way.
Apparently the HTC models act like older phones did back in the day. What HTC needs to do is put something on the phone face itself when new that says "CHARGE FOR 4 HOURS BEFORE INITIAL POWER ON FOR MAXIMUM BATTERY LIFE."
Once you do this once you dont have to keep doing it. I also powered on my phone the minute I got it and activated it without charging it first and I was seeing this issue until I did a power off charge. The phone runs from 6am to 11pm without an additional charge cycle in the day and that is a huge improvement for me. I was charging the phone twice to three times daily.
x10 has been on the charger for over an hour, still sitting at 1%, lol
when i went to bed at 2:40am, it was at 40%, woke up at 7:30am to 14%, got to work at 8:45am, it was at 4%. been plugged in since about 9am (10:19am now), and it's still at 1%. red LED is on, phone works, but shuts down shortly after unplugging it.
nothing running in the background, airplane mode on.
don't know if it's the battery, or the phone, but it's going back today. and i'll be getting something other than the x10. probably something other than android at this point (4th android device).
this is really weird since i have never had a battery issue up until this morning. the battery always lasted atleast a day an a half.

You're correct... the only reason it would appear to discharge quicker is because of the added heat as the phone/battery gets warmer when using the wall charger.
Otherwise the discharge rate would be exactly the same for both methods
Well...u could try "OFF mode" charging. 2.2. see that works or nt...
Svt try this, this works for me.
Flash back too 2.1 stock s.e fw. Go charge for 100% .
It should fix the problem.
When you flash custom rom clean bat stat. Note- dont clean bat stat again when your in a running custom rom.

It gets warm but not so much. And very important thing is when you charge in wall to turn off charging right after it reaches 100%. It's not healthy to leave it in.

it gets much warmer than by usb as the current is double....

Exactly!
According to my experience, that is the only difference between charging via USB and on the wall. If you do the latter, it appears to be discharging faster at first, but after it settles, it holds the charge just as well.
Ok, you can see my battery temp when charging trough wall socket. When not charging the temp is about 34 degree. So wall charging doesn't make the phone too heat more than a usb.

I beg to differ..mine is much warmer on the wall charger than when charged via usb... Especially during the end of the charge

About 3 hours here which is fine, charging from the supplied charger connected to electricity mains. Are you charging via the USB connector? It will take a lot longer, something called trickle charge or something like that.

I noticed this when my brother bought the same phone. His takes a ridiculous amount of time to charge, maybe 1% per 10 mins or so and it gets really hot while doing so.
Mine on the other hand doesn't get hot at all and charges at least 3 times faster than his.
please state charge state, ages, fast normal etc.
firmware and revison thanx
The charger shipped with my S2 has only 700mA...
especially if you are using the phone (worst: gaming) while charging it seems to get never finished . I guess the current drain doesn't left much for the charging.
So i'm using my old HTC-chargers (one AC=>USB and AC=> MicroUSB) witch both supplies 1000mA.... ~43% more in theory
Hard to say how big the advantage is in fact, but it makes a difference.
Also keep in mind, that a standard USB-Port supplies max. 500mA, depending on other USB-devices even much less. I also read that the charging result is "better" if you not using it in the meantime.
You can buy USB-Chargers up to 2100mA (e.g Amazon), but i have doubts that this will be improve the charging time because on the type-label behind the battery is written Rated : 3,7V-1000mA. Even more current wouldn't not damage the device (afaik!!!), the device or the battery could not charge faster.
Maybe somebody knows about what is meant by the the 1000mA exactly. Would be nice if the device could be charge a little bit faster.
Otherwise i am going to buy a 2nd battery with an external charger.
greetings
I found this on Android Forum
lotus49
USB charging is slow on the S2 as it uses trickle charging
"Trickle" is an exaggeration.
The phone can tell whether it's connected to USB or a mains charger. If the latter, it limits charge current to 650mA. If the former 400mA.
It will charge faster on the mains but not loads faster.

Yeah, I do sleep more than 3.5 hours per day and I try to charge it every night, but the problem is when the phone runs out of battery in the middle of the day and you don't have 3.5 to spend in charging it fully.
I think the iphone 4 is only a 1420Mah battery if I remember correctly while ours is 1650. Sure, it takes perhaps another hour to charge but I don't find it a big deal. It does appear that the first 50% charges faster then the second half as well but that could just be my imagination.
I have read that Samsung phones charge slower so that the battery life will be longer than that of those other phones such as HTC where the phone charges a lot faster. I'd rather get another year out of my battery and it take longer but do admit 3.5 hours does seem like a while.
this topic has been covered. teh SGS2 battery driver is capped at 650 mA for wall charging, 450 mA for USB charging. this code resides in the battery driver.
someone could compile a new kernel with this value raised. other phones like the nexus one charge at 980 mA for wall charger, 480 for USB.
samsung capped charge current, likely for heat issues, nobody really knows.
same. take long time to charge and heating if charge n gaming. the hottest spot at camera side

Hi people... i think that Samsung has got a little of troubles of making batteries and charging philosophies.
I has got two devices that are the last technology from samsung, the nexus s and the galaxy s2 right now.
The nexus s has got a very strange trouble (until now not fixed) that battery never reach full 100% state in charging. And much very very long charging time.
The Galaxy S2 reach 100% but takes too much time to charge. It's possibile that never one has think about modifying this?
Where we can start to mod this ? Inside the kernel? Inside bootloader?
I think it's not only a mine trouble
i think its the battery charger not the phone, which makes it so slow

Mine finishes very quickly. about 1-2 hours when it's at 25 percent. And you cant fix charging. Remember that it is a big battery.
Ever tried using an adaptor for a device that has a lower rating than the adaptor? Ever heard that pop and the smell that follows?
Learn to be patient. Last thing you need is for the battery to blow up and destroy your phone.
protip: turn off your phone while you're charging with AC and not USB.
it could be your USB (and by extension, your PC) is not providing enough power to the USB ports. It happens.
My phone charges in 4 hours with AC when the phone is off. 5 when on.
6 hours on USB, phone off. 8 phone on.
It can be "fixed" in the kernel.
Samsung made it charge slower so that it charges better.
Faster charging = more heat = more dissipation, and potentially other problems.
Even though its a safety feature, its ridiculously slow. Phones takes AGES for a full charge.

Do you guys not get more than 3-4 hours of sleep?
Do you guys exhaust the battery to the point where the phone turns itself off before plugging it in?
Can you not plug your phone in before you go to bed?
I always plug my phone in before I go to bed (usually with 10-20% remaining) and I don't remember a time where I wake up in the morning and the phone isn't 100%.
I'm not trying to be cynical...just curious what other people's routines are when 3-4 hours to charge a phone becomes an issue.
A complaint like this wouldn't even cross my mind.
I need a faster charge too. Not because I'm impatient but because the phone can use more current then it can charge, especially during car navigation.

Well, the issue here is obvioisly not when sleeping (and yes I slept 3 hrs last noght and got a full charge...bit when on car or @ work, lunch time etc...those little precious weird moments u get in a daily basis when u arent using ur phone and got a charger at hand....maybe it would be possible to make an app which would allow toggling fast charging or slow charging, that way we could have both....fast ( on the run) and slow (night) modes....that would be really nice......but wait....winmo had this remember?
I'm unsure what's wrong!!!
My phone has been fine, until it died today. I practice a 1 charge a day rule and I let my battery drain completely before I even think about putting it back on the charger.
Today, my phone died a littler earlier than expected, but that's okay because I was using my iPhone for most of the day. I got home at about 11PM and put my phone on the charger at 11:15PM. Here it is, 2:25AM and my phone only has 30% charge.
I've never noticed it charging this slowly before because I typically put it on the charger before I go to sleep and take it off when I wake up. This doesn't seem normal from ANY phone that I've ever used or troubleshooted in my life.
Why so slow? Is everyone's phone just as slow or should I be concerned?
Edit: I am using the charger that came with my phone in the same wall outlet that I've used since I got the phone. Nothing else is plugged into that outlet, either.
It would seem sensible to try a different charger and power outlet.

You can't use the iPhone\iPad chargers as most of them don't comply with the USB charging standard (It will only charge at 500ma, the limit of USB charging).
You said it died quicker than usual as well? Sure nothing is running that drains the battery? Check the battery usage in settings after leaving it unplugged a while and see if you see anything that's using a ridiculous amount of battery.
I've had the same problem. Sometimes I plug mine into a wall charger and it reads Charging (USB) which may be your problem. Other times it reads Charging (AC).

It's been off of the charger for about an an hour and a half and nothing out of the norm is draining the battery. Screen on time is at 40%, but that's because I was reading all of my sports news and stuff from my device.
Interesting thing to note: I'm at 79% on my Nexus 4 after about an hour and a half unplugged and doing regular browsing. I'm at 98% on my 4s with doing just about the same things as I've done on my Nexus 4, and even watching a YouTube video on my 4s. I've also had a great deal of voice calls and texts this morning to my iPhone. They were neck and neck when I first got my N4 on December 10th. Now, it's dying faster. The only difference is that I've installed Spotify on my Nexus 4 since then... Which isn't running.

It was reading USB last night! I thought that was normal, lmao... Thinking it meant "there is a USB cable charging it and not wireless charging."
Hm... The plot thickens, I guess.
Yeah it sometimes reads USB but if you unplug then plug it back in, it will change to AC. Not sure how to fix it but that's your problem right there.
Question: are you stock, rooted stock, or different ROM?
