Does anyone have any experience of using external battery packs with the N4?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet®-Ex...JZ62/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1359805415&sr=8-6
Looking at buying this one but not sure if it will work with both my N4 and Galaxy Tab 2 or should I buy a Anker Slimtalk.
I bought the largest capacity anker I could through Amazon and it is amazing. It has 2x usb ports, one for 3A and one for 1.5A. This means you can charge any device basically. If you plug in two devices to charge at the same time they will both charge at 1.5A. With the nexus 4 I can charge it >5 times before the battery pack is dead.

So I just looked for you. Here's what I bought... [New Version in Nov] Anker® Astro3E 10000mAh Dual 5V 3A USB Output External Battery Pack
Another great thing about this charger is that the cable you use to charge the phone doubles as the cable to charge the battery pack. Saves you carrying around extra crap.

I have used the anker astro slim for about a year previously on sensation 4g now on my Nexus 4. Its great becuase I can plug it in and slip it into my pocket with the Nexus 4. It is easily stored in my car for on the go use and provides just over 1 full charge if I don't use the phone while it charges.
http://www.ianker.com/anker-astro-external-battery-backup-charger/product/79UN5V06-BC32A
With that being said I would not purchase it becuase the astro slim2 is supposed to be coming out which has an upgraded 4500mah battery over the 3200mah and is 10mm thick.

I Would definitely suggest getting branded items here, the unbranded stuff from dodgy websites usually don't match the rated capacity. When travelling with the n4 (especially on long flights with stop overs etc, or if you're backpacking), it can be a lifesaver.
Great tip! That slim2 definitely caught my attention.

I bought a mophie juice pack power station before a trip I went on in late August. The one I purchased is 2500mah. I believe they make bigger and smaller ones though. It's roughly the size of half a deck of cards.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I absolutely love it. It's slim, quick to charge and has a battery gauge on the side so you can see how much battery it has left.

cheers. just bought one of these myself on your recommendation (amazon uk 25.99, free shipping).
i already have a 7000mah tecknet which i'm very happy with but this one with its 3A output should enable me to charge my playbook + n4 simultaneously.
Any word on when that'll be released? Where did that rumor come from?
I bought these when they were on sale before Christmas:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00852Y722/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
They are still on sale, for a bit more than I paid, but I highly recommend this. You can charge two things at once.
Got 2 in monoprice... rated at 5000 and quite nice.. forget price but we're best around

I've been using the Astro Slim for about a year as well and would highly recommend it too, but glad to see they are releasing a new model. I might have to give my current one away to a friend as a gift and upgrade when they release it, as more capacity is always nice!
Although you can find equal quality chargers with higher capacity for the same price, I had another brand previously and had to keep a usb cable with it. The Astro brand has the cable built in and it is MUCH more convenient (and less bulky!).
@nba thanks for the heads up on the slim2, i bought my friend a slim for christmas and he loves it, think I'll get the slim2 when its out
does anyone know when the slim2 is being released?
Concur with the others. I've got an Anker 10k mah one from amazon canada (amazon US wouldn't ship for some reason). I love it for these reasons:
1. nexus 4 has a non-replacable battery.
2. I own a number of devices that charge through USB port and carry them around including kindle and bluetooth keyboard.
3. If I go out to a bar or whatever at the end of the day, I don't want to leave my phone plugged in far away from me. That's how **** gets stolen. It's easy enough to plug the phone in and keep it in my pocket.
4. I opted for the bigger and bulkier 10k cause I knew 2 things - great for traveling and I knew that my friends would want to plug their phones in, too. And, yes, inevitably, when I pull out my phone, they ask wtf is that brick and I explain it and then they wanna charge their phones cause it's the end of the day and we're hanging out in a bar or wherever without nearby power.
I've been using an Anker Slim Talk 3200mAh. It charges at .6 A, and has a built in micro USB port.
$24 on Amazon.

PowerSkin Pop'n
In case anyone was interested in one of these, I received a PowerSkin Pop'n today. It's somewhere between an ordinary external battery back and a battery case since it's designed to be attached to the phone. It attaches to the back of the Nexus 4 using suction cups. I had initially assumed that the battery would block the camera, but it seems to only partially obscure the LED flash when attached, and it's possible to manually adjust the battery down a little bit further. The battery cannot be connected if the official bumper is being used.
The battery is rated at 2000 maH capacity, so it's not a particularly high capacity battery. I also wouldn't describe it as a budget item, it cost me $63. As has been noted in other professional reviews, the glossy surface of the battery prominently displays fingerprints.

You need a 1.8 amp or better charger. USB is 0.5a and the apple ones are usually 1a. Don't need the official kindle one, but you do need a more powerful charger.

Jayj0ka,
The Kindle Fire HD and 2 optional charger is rated at 5.0 Volts with 1.8 Milliamp current. We have a large array of chargers in our office, here is what we have just in case you have one:
1. Motorola Charger - 5.1 Volts with 850 Milliamps
2. Desktop Computer USB 2.0 Standard - 4.75 - 5.25 Volts with average of 500 Miliamps
3. Laptop Computer USB 2.0 Standard - 4.75 - 5.25 Volts with average of 100 Milliamps
4. Samsung Note II Charger - 5.0 Volts with 2.0 Amps
5. Google Nexus 10 Charger - 5.0 Volts with 2.0 Amps
6. Kyocera Charger - 5.0 Volts with 850 Milliamps
7. Amazon Kindle Fire Rapid Charger - 5.0 Volts with 1.8 Amps
So if you have a Samsung Charger laying around, you will have what is similar to the Amazon Optional Charger.
We use this graph to figure approximate charging time for Lithium Batteries used in the Tablets today:

Figure 1: Charge stages of lithium. Li-ion or Li-po is fully charged when the current drops to a predetermined level or levels out at the end of Stage 2. In lieu of trickle charge, some chargers apply a topping charge when the voltage drops to 4.05V/cell (Stage 4).
Cell phones use a smart charger board to regulate the rate of charge as shown in the above example. Also, the above example is for a 4.05 volt/cell.
I just realised i have been charging my kindle fire hd with my hp touchpad plug to usb cable charger which is 5.3 volts 2.0A

I wrongly assumed that any charger plug that took a usb cable was a standard voltage/ampage.

You're not going to hurt anything. The smart circuits on board will only draw as much current as they need. Heck, with the battery size of the kindle you could charge at around 7-8A and be safe. Prettymuch all lipo is fine to charge at a 1c rate. The heat would probably scare a few folks... and the charger would be expensive.
Thanks geekybiker.

DVDYETI,
I am sorry, I should have been more clear in our post. We will add a line to the post acknowledging that any of these changer will work on the Kindle Fire 2, Kindle Fire HD 7" and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9".
This is a great question and I understand why one would question the use of a charger with higher output or in you case an output of 5v with 2amp.
The Kindle family of devices house a TI Board that has an intelligent module on board that automatically throttles the current, thereby eliminating battery damage. This is a critical feature with Li-Po batteries since Li-Po batteries catch fire when they are overcharged. I remember back about 5 years ago, phone had not added Li-Po batteries for this reason, these batteries were used extensively in the RC market (which in one of our hobbies). I can remember charging large Li-Po batteries in a Fireproof bag! Yes, the Fireproof bag was something every RC enthusiast owned. Today, the technology has grown to such a level, Li-Po fires are very rare and have been completely eliminated in the phone and tablet market.
The long story short? You can use a charger of up to 2.2 amp safely.
Thanks everybody for feedback

Hi,
I've made the observation, that regardless if I use a 0.7A, 1.0A, 2.0A charging devices, the power consumption in (milli-)watts is always the same.
so the conclusion must be, it doesn't matter, it always the same speed ?!

You might be using a wrong cable. If your cable doesn't have the data wires and the data pins aren't shorted on the charger you'll only pull 0.5A. Basic USB rate. Unfortunately the world of USB charging is kinda of a mess between all the various resistance based ID methods and the way apple and the rest of the world handle high speed charger ID.
should've bought the official charger when i got the KF since its only $10 when bundled.
anyway I'm surprised to see an ipod touch charger works(that fast) since its only 5V 1A and, apple chargers output only 500ma on non-apple devices.
Here is a great thread about charger

its for nexus 7 but perfectly fits out kindle fire.
I bought a playbook charger, about $10 on amazon. The best thing is, its in retail package and sold by amazon.com, so I know I get a genuine one. too many counterfeit chargers on ebay. And I usually avoid 3rd party/"OEM" chargers -- just for my own safety.

Good to know, thank you Geekybiker we will pass this onto our customers.
I have been using my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 charger with my Kindle Fire HD and it has been working very well. It charges pretty fast also. But I have also tried various chargers from my IPad and cellphone but so far the Galaxy Tab 2 one works the best for me. I did not want to spring $20 that they are asking for the Kindle Fire HD rapid charger. :good:
I just finally got my phone to die after a lot of use from 10 hours of music, 3 hours of web browsing/facebook, 1 hour of modern combat 4, and a crap load of texting and calls. Well when i plugged it in its charging really fast. I seem to get about 5-8% per minute. is something off or is this just really quick at charging.
EditL ok it took about 30 minutes to a full charge.....
The Samsung charger that comes with the phone has a new chip that charges the phone at 2A so it will be quicker. If you use a different cord it'll go back to being slow.
Yeah I absolutely love this charger. Quickest charge ever.

I'm going to run a few tests using other cords (monoprice, belkin, and a couple others and I will update this thread in a couple days with the amp charge. My hypothesis is that the monoprice cables with a thicker wire gauge will be able to handle the charge but until I run proper tests I won't know.
Oh a question I had for any owners is if anyone's galaxy is getting super hot when charging?

Are you guys sure about this? Qualcomm's site says it's their integrated chipset that facilitates the quick charge, not the cables.
Quick Charge 1.0 makes all this is available to the user with existing USB charging accessories—no new cables and wall chargers to buy.
Quick Charge 1.0 is offered to our customers as an integrated solution (as part of the PMIC, or power management integrated circuit) and
a standalone solution that interfaces to the USB connector. Any phone or tablet’s charging port can be enabled with Quick Charge.

It's the chipset working in combination with a compatible charger. Using a regular charger will work, but charge times will be longer. The "cables" don't have anything to do with it actually. You guys should have owned the HTC One, One of the reasons I left that phone was because of the 4.5 hour charge time. Ridiculous. Thank God the S4 is way better in that regard.

I've done some testing on the best ways to charge the Nexus 9. Here's what I've found...
a. You'll want to upgrade your kernel.
The stock kernel for the Nexus 9 does not support charging over 1.5a, I'm using Elemental X which supports up to 2a.
b. Use a charger between 1.5-2a.
I'm using the Insiginia rapid charger from Best Buy.
I've tested 4 different cables to see the amp output from the charger with the new kernel using Ampere. The stock charger from the box, my Moto G LTE charger, an Insignia charger and a generic charger from ebay. The results are as follows...
Insignia Rapid Charger @ 5v/2.4a
I read the readings with the screen on 40% brightness and let them each sit for 60 seconds.

Min is the minimum amperage the cable hit, max in the very maximum and avg is the average at which the output sat around.
As expected, the stock usb cable performed the best, while the generic charger was very unstable and wild (I probably won't use this charger anymore as a result).
Interesting about the kernel.
Also your title says cables then you talk about chargers. Cables can also make a big difference in how much power your device gets. What cables did you use?
*EDIT*
Ahhh i miss understood. you where switching cables not chargers.
you probably were seeing this http://lifehacker.com/cables-can-significantly-impact-the-charging-speed-of-y-1532784722
Thanks for this. Was wondering how much the cables mattered.
I tested my stock charger and cable. The average amps are 850-1100 mA. It's mostly around 980 mA, and the max I've gotten is 1160 mA. Doesn't seem to go beyond that.
I also tested a nokia cable with the stock charger that is 1.2 meters and got quite different results. It charges with the average amps at about 450-550 mA, with it mostly at about 500 mA. Max I got was 740 mA. Not using that cable again...
Kernel is FireIce which supports 2A charging, and brightness was at about 40%. Voltage was read at about 4.02-4.11V for both.
Gonna have to find a charger with a 2A output.

Interesting about the kernel.
Also your title says cables then you talk about chargers. Cables can also make a big difference in how much power your device gets. What cables did you use?
*EDIT*
Ahhh i miss understood. you where switching cables not chargers.

I also misread the post the first time. Thought he was talking about chargers, when in fact he was talking about the cables for the chargers,
Sorry about the confusion, should have said 'Insignia Adapter' lol I'm curious about some of the other chargers I have lying around the house now.
i had learned this with my asus t100 wintab. that thing is picky as hell when it comes to cables. one of the best cables i've used are the ferrous monoprice ones. shorter is better. samsung's stock cables are just as good.
Using an iPad charger with a 12inch sony headphone charger cable and getting around 1480mah on average. Using Elementalx kernel.
HiSpeed 2A charging cable
Just wanted to share my experience. I have a couple 6ft cables that would only charge at 500mA, even ploperly detected as AC charging. I just picked up the cable below and get a very consistent 1500mA avg (1400-1600). 6ft long 20awg

Weird thing is that I also tried using the note 3 charger with a lot of cables including the stock and got slower charging than the stock charger!
I might just invest in the cable mentioned above to see if it helps.

same here. the best cable/charger combo i've tested is the stock samsung charger and 3' cable (not sure which box it's from since i've had so many galaxy devices, but they're all the same). the 5' cable hits about 1400. using a monoprice 6ft cable does just as good as the 5' cable. i have a 3' monoprice in the car but too lazy to get it to test it. the best generic cables i found are these:
http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5457&seq=1&format=2
i'm pretty sure i'd squeeze a little more juice if i got the 1.5' ones.

Wow, those are pretty inexpensive. Thanks for posting
Not a surprise. Many (most I suppose) of the cheaper cables simply dont have thick enough wire, too much resistance. For decent and cheap cables I like the Amazon basics cables. The newer USB3 versions have thick gauge wire so the 6 footers charge at full speed even with devices that support high amperage charging.

I'll keep that in mind about the amazon basics brand. Im just using a cheap china made brand, (i dont know what brand) and they charge pretty slowly, but it's alright. If the device is dead, I'll plug it in, and it'll be charged by morning. I don't really need anything too much fancier or faster than that.
The "basics" cables are a real bargain. I am very careful about the cables I use these days after my wife used a cheap cable on her N7 and it shorted out on the connector and roasted the pins on the device. Not sure how that happened but I suspect a very sloppy fit didn't help.
I'm using a monoprice cable (6ft i believe) with the oneplus one charger, and it works perfectly. The monoprice USB cables are among the best I've used; they're durable, reliable and the springs seem to keep their tension over time, something I've found that cheaper USB cables can have trouble with.
I was dumb enough not to check for it prior to placing order, silly me, after note 7 fiasco I needed a phone fast .
But shame on you Google and HTC for not including it in 2016.

You'll find allot of users don't care including myself. It's. Nice to put your phone down and have it charge but it's just too slow.
Hmm, take an extra 2 seconds to plug in and fully charge in an hour or go wireless and wait...and wait...and wait...

My note 7 was charging very quick, come to think, my wife's s7 is charging great wirelessly too. I think it depends on the charger you have.

You are aware wireless charging receivers are available for type-c. The cost is about $11 US if it is that important to you.

It's still over two hours. $69 for saving 2 seconds and still taking over twice as long. Not a priority for me.

You can buy a lot of fast chargers for $20. Also it's about the freedom the function provides. I can grab it from my desk wireless charger and go. Come back and do it all over. Plugging into a cord 30 times a day is annoying. Also those usb-c wireless adapters are very slow

After having note 5, note 7, and my wife with s7, I can mostly agree, but also respect and understand the "having wireless chargers at work, home, on the end table, etc to just top off all the time."
It turned out for me that I only really used wireless charging for the "time to roll over and go to sleep" and I'd just plop it on the charger... But honestly, I really don't miss it. For any random top offs, I still chose faster wire charging, or the Samsung 5,200 mAh fast charging battery pack (I hacew two and they're awesome. About the size of the note 7).

Not a priority at all here. If it had it probably wouldn't use it at all (why spend more on what everyone is saying a high dollar phone and I still will have to plug the wireless unit in), have no issues using that same plug, hooking up my phone by cord and getting a super fast charge.
My Pixel XL cost me $1300 CAN and I can not spend that much money without doing a little research.
I did know the Pixel XL did not support Qi Charging, annoying but not something I can live without.
Used to leave my Nexus 6 on one, at work.
What do I care if it was slow, the device was always charged.
I like the feel of the Pixel XL the material metal does not support wireless charging.
I like USB-C in that if it is dark I never have to worry about trying to insert the connector upside down.
I like the battery life of the Pixel XL, often at the end of the day I still have 50% battery life, I charge it less
I agree with the OP here...
It's easy to say "just take 2 secs to plug it in"
and... "wireless charging is so slow"
But I was on a Note 7, and had invested in "fast wireless chargers" and frankly it was pretty fast.
Probably about 75% as fast as the qualcom fast charging through cable.
Also the stands were convenient for my desk at work (has it propped up for youtube viewing or whatever if I am doing that)
I even got a wireless charging pad for in my car, drop my phone in this little area and it was charging, no need to unplug for when I want to pick it up and do stuff or talk
(yeah I still prefer talking on my phone, not over bluetooth.... plugging and unplugging while driving is dangerous AF).
Fact of the matter is, when Apple "invents" wireless charging next year - android is going to look silly for having been dropping it as of late.
AND the glass panel on the pixel should have provided the PERFECT opportunity to implement it.
I already bought a usb-c receiver to tuck behind a case. (although the good cases that I like seem to be clear.... need to hide the look of the receiver lol).. we'll see how good that works.
Wireless charging kills the battery sooner, sucks in a nonremovable battery. They want to avoid over heating the device a much as possible. Rapid charging wireless is even harsher.
They even throttled how fast the pixel coukd fast charge..
And with that 15-18w fast charging is alot quick imho than wireless..
But if you like wureless and have to have it because you have lots of pads.. You can use the adapters..
I like plugging into my fast chargers, especially the car ones.

Hey it's not waterproof either, it's only got one front facing selfie cam, it's only got one rear facing Cam and it's only 12 megapixel... No OIS. No second screen. Assistant can't do many things yet. Buttons rattle.
Tgsp dont fit or halo..
Its 2016 and its from Google.. Youd expect more right?
You can still sort of get wireless charging with the Pixel/XL.

From my understanding when the battery is lower than 50% the Stock OEM charger is suppose to feed 9v at 1.6a. And after 50% it's supposed to drop back down to 5v 2a. My stock OEM charger and Cable does not go to 9v at all. I didn't see the charger go to 4v. Would not show amperage.
Heres photo after letting charge for 10min under 50%

I use 3c toolboxes battery managerbut still has to be tweaked for rite readings
also if samsungs anything like lg when the screens on it don't fast charge normally to keep the heat down
like rite now my fast charge is only 1.5 amps
its always changing it might fast charge for 2 or 3 min then drop off for 2 or 3 min kind of thing
I personally don't like fast charge its hard on a battery the slower you charge em the longer they'll last
imo
just like a car battery slow charges are always better
I normally turn my phone off when I'm charging the battery because it charges so much faster and the heat and stuff. So I'll leave it off till it's done or close and take it out of the case. It doesn't take long so I don't mind doing that. I got looking into this because I was looking to purchase a new cable and wanted to be able to compare and make sure I was getting the same charge times.

Actually, I use the computer (either my desktop or one of my notebooks) to charge my devices (Galaxy Nexus , Lenovo tablet, and Galaxy S7 that is awaiting pickup by its owner). While the two Samsungs both support wireless charging (yes - the GNex does as well - as long as it is running MM or later), I prefer wired charging.

Why is that? As long as your computer supports USB 2.0 (and unless it's older than Windows Vista, it likely does) and your phone or tablet is *newer* than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, it's a standard feature (of both PC and phone - the same also applies to portable computers - such as laptops and notebooks). Yes - it's a trickle-charge (compared to plugging it into a wall charger or cigarette lighter) - however. I'm more than likely using my PC while the devices are plugged into unused-otherwise USB ports - it's not like the USB ports they are plugged into are doing anything else. (In short, I'm not sacrificing USB ports to use them for that purpose - out of the ten USB ports my desktop PC supports, I'm only using - for all purposes - six; I have four headers that I am not using at all.) On top of that, most USB chargers for Android devices are of the "wall-wart" type OR are cursed with short cord length - or both. (Yuck to both.)
I don't need a fast-charge - and especially not when I can top off using a trickle-charge while not using my phone OR tablet - and I'm usually not when I'm at my desktop PC.
