External battery packs

Does anyone have any experience of using external battery packs with the N4?

Looking at buying this one but not sure if it will work with both my N4 and Galaxy Tab 2 or should I buy a Anker Slimtalk.

I bought the largest capacity anker I could through Amazon and it is amazing. It has 2x usb ports, one for 3A and one for 1.5A. This means you can charge any device basically. If you plug in two devices to charge at the same time they will both charge at 1.5A. With the nexus 4 I can charge it >5 times before the battery pack is dead.

I have used the anker astro slim for about a year previously on sensation 4g now on my Nexus 4. Its great becuase I can plug it in and slip it into my pocket with the Nexus 4. It is easily stored in my car for on the go use and provides just over 1 full charge if I don't use the phone while it charges.

With that being said I would not purchase it becuase the astro slim2 is supposed to be coming out which has an upgraded 4500mah battery over the 3200mah and is 10mm thick.

I Would definitely suggest getting branded items here, the unbranded stuff from dodgy websites usually don't match the rated capacity. When travelling with the n4 (especially on long flights with stop overs etc, or if you're backpacking), it can be a lifesaver.

I bought a mophie juice pack power station before a trip I went on in late August. The one I purchased is 2500mah. I believe they make bigger and smaller ones though. It's roughly the size of half a deck of cards.

cheers. just bought one of these myself on your recommendation (amazon uk 25.99, free shipping).
i already have a 7000mah tecknet which i'm very happy with but this one with its 3A output should enable me to charge my playbook + n4 simultaneously.

Any word on when that'll be released? Where did that rumor come from?

I've been using the Astro Slim for about a year as well and would highly recommend it too, but glad to see they are releasing a new model. I might have to give my current one away to a friend as a gift and upgrade when they release it, as more capacity is always nice!
Although you can find equal quality chargers with higher capacity for the same price, I had another brand previously and had to keep a usb cable with it. The Astro brand has the cable built in and it is MUCH more convenient (and less bulky!).

Concur with the others. I've got an Anker 10k mah one from amazon canada (amazon US wouldn't ship for some reason). I love it for these reasons:
1. nexus 4 has a non-replacable battery.
2. I own a number of devices that charge through USB port and carry them around including kindle and bluetooth keyboard.
3. If I go out to a bar or whatever at the end of the day, I don't want to leave my phone plugged in far away from me. That's how **** gets stolen. It's easy enough to plug the phone in and keep it in my pocket.
4. I opted for the bigger and bulkier 10k cause I knew 2 things - great for traveling and I knew that my friends would want to plug their phones in, too. And, yes, inevitably, when I pull out my phone, they ask wtf is that brick and I explain it and then they wanna charge their phones cause it's the end of the day and we're hanging out in a bar or wherever without nearby power.

I've been using an Anker Slim Talk 3200mAh. It charges at .6 A, and has a built in micro USB port.
$24 on Amazon.

PowerSkin Pop'n
In case anyone was interested in one of these, I received a PowerSkin Pop'n today. It's somewhere between an ordinary external battery back and a battery case since it's designed to be attached to the phone. It attaches to the back of the Nexus 4 using suction cups. I had initially assumed that the battery would block the camera, but it seems to only partially obscure the LED flash when attached, and it's possible to manually adjust the battery down a little bit further. The battery cannot be connected if the official bumper is being used.
The battery is rated at 2000 maH capacity, so it's not a particularly high capacity battery. I also wouldn't describe it as a budget item, it cost me $63. As has been noted in other professional reviews, the glossy surface of the battery prominently displays fingerprints.

Anyone else having insane charge times?

I just finally got my phone to die after a lot of use from 10 hours of music, 3 hours of web browsing/facebook, 1 hour of modern combat 4, and a crap load of texting and calls. Well when i plugged it in its charging really fast. I seem to get about 5-8% per minute. is something off or is this just really quick at charging.
EditL ok it took about 30 minutes to a full charge.....

The Samsung charger that comes with the phone has a new chip that charges the phone at 2A so it will be quicker. If you use a different cord it'll go back to being slow.

Its insane with how it is. on my SIII i used my old Palm Pre charger (old phone i use to have haha i miss the OS of it) but all my other cords got loose and fell out easy but for that cord. I was use to like a 2 hour charge and some wall outlets it would be 3 hours. this is insane for a 30 min charge haha and lasts all day for me.

It's the new Qualcomm Quick Charge technology.

the tricky thing is you also have to use the USB cord they provided as well...the old usb cord in the new 2A adapter won't work
if you notice, it is thicker to handle the extra charge

I'm going to run a few tests using other cords (monoprice, belkin, and a couple others and I will update this thread in a couple days with the amp charge. My hypothesis is that the monoprice cables with a thicker wire gauge will be able to handle the charge but until I run proper tests I won't know.
Oh a question I had for any owners is if anyone's galaxy is getting super hot when charging?

Are you guys sure about this? Qualcomm's site says it's their integrated chipset that facilitates the quick charge, not the cables.

It's the chipset working in combination with a compatible charger. Using a regular charger will work, but charge times will be longer. The "cables" don't have anything to do with it actually. I finally retired my Pre for the S4.
The usb cable shouldn't matter, as long as it is in the Samsung Charger.

I loved that phone. Great OS, sad it didn't go further.
@Powerbird As for charging for me it does not get hot for me, a little warm but that's it. It was only on day one of getting it which weird.

Same as kyhassen here first day phone charger and cord got extremely hot when I first fully charged it. It ran 1day 15hours and am presently charging it and its not hot anymore. The charger was warm at first now it has cooled down that its at 92% I love that it charges really fast and will see how long it last this time.

You guys should have owned the HTC One, One of the reasons I left that phone was because of the 4.5 hour charge time. Ridiculous. Thank God the S4 is way better in that regard.

It did take a while. But I used a palm pre charger and it was like 3 hours. If i used a aftermarket cord I had it was 12 hours

Holy crap! I have mine charging now and I had check it. It's a little warm but it luckily it still doesn't have any holes in it.

I am not getting anywhere near 30 minutes. My first charge from dead to 100% with the phone off was about 2.5 hours. I am charging it right now from dead and it has been going for about an hour about 75% done. Wonder if I have a defective charger or cable? Will try a different cable to test first.

Very slow charging when the screen is on

Has anybody noticed that if you have the screen on, the battery charges extremely slowly.
I've noticed that w the screen on using gsam, the battery is only being charged at 500mah whereas if the screen is off, it is being charged at 2200mah.
I get it that the phone will charge slower w the screen on, but it shouldn't be this bad.
Here's a screenshot, you can see that I started charging a little before 4pm and after 50 min it only charged aroudn 10%.
Once I turn the screen off it will start charging very fast. But it shouldn't be charging this slowly w the screen on.

Last night (the first time I charged it) my battery did not charge at all when the screen was on. It was a straight flat line. I was using the stock charger, and the lock.screen showed it was in rapid charge. It was perplexing.
I did not experience this today when I charged it.

So today when u had the screen on, the battery was being charged quickly?
Can u install gsam battery monitor and check your mah?
I want to know whether my phone or charger is defective or is it normal.

Got home 45 mins later and the phone had charged to 18%

This is a deal breaker for me. I use my phone all the time plugged in. If it's barely charging then that's not acceptable.
So I let my phone charge for 30min w the screen off and it charged 55%, which is great but I need it to charge faster w the screen on.

This was the exact reason I returned my g4 back when it was new. Hardly anyone else seemed to have an issue with this, but I use it in my car all the time so it was a huge deal to me. Maybe it's the 808? I wonder if the 6p has the same problem since it's a different soc

I hope the 6p doesn't have this issue because if it does I'm switching to the iPhone.
It's inexcusable that Google would let something like this get past qa.

Seriously though, I normally drive home at night and stream and charge as well. Will have to try this out Monday night.

whenever I game, I typically plug in, so if my battery is not charging very much thats a big deal.
I'm hoping I have a defective battery or charger, but I would like to get input from others to see if they are experiencing the same issue.
Again, never had this problem with any other nexus device. Only the 5x. Have a 6p on order, will test that out when I get it.

If you're gaming then the phone is thermal throttling, if you're throttling then the phone will slow down charge speeds to protect the battery. That sounds like normal operation to me.
No one likes to hear this but you honestly shouldn't be gaming while charging the battery as high heat while charging degrades it. Situations like gaming or GPS navigation in a hot car can be some of the hottest scenarios for a phone.
Lastly, the faster a phone charges the more heat it produces. I've instantly noticed how plugging in a 5x it heats up much quicker and faster than the N5 because it is charging up to 3000mA per second. LG and Google both know that faster charging is already degrading the battery faster (a trade of between speed and longevity) and have more than likely put in safety precautions to protect it from heat exposure during that time.

2. Keep it cool
Avoid situations where your device can overheat. Your battery will drain much faster when it's hot, even if you're not using it, and this can even damage your battery. Bear in mind that your device warms up when it's plugged in, so try not to keep it charging all the time.

I haven't had any problems like this

I don't mind if it charges slower like maybe 1000mah, but it's charging at less than 500mah even if I'm just browsing or just idling w the screen on.
I think I must have defective battery or charger.

I'm wondering if there's a conditioning period. First charge, flat line with screen on. Second charge, projected time to fill was a touch over 3 hours. Third time, under 90 minutes... Coming from the 1-2% range each time.

OK briefly tried out this. I turned off wifi and plugged in Nx, started up Order and Chaos 2(which will drain my N10 pretty quick and charger just slows down the drain). I played for 2-3 mins and I charged from 91-95%. I don't think that Netflix (which I stream on way home from work) will be more intensive.
I have been driving and charging, while streaming, for years. Personally don't think I have hurt any of my phones. Although I am no expert so who knows.

Is fast charging working ?

Hi.. I use the stock charger however even though the notification says it is fast charging .. I dont see it charging fast.. From 26% to 33% it took almost 25mins

You might wanna check on your charger and also use apps like Ampeare or AccuBattery to test the amount of current your phone is receiving.

Ampere won't work.
The V20 will not do quick charge when the screen is on. Quick charge only works when the screen is off.

I was having this issue too, and it appears Facebook was having some kind of problem where the process was using a lot of CPU in the background while the phone was locked. After I killed the process, fast charging worked again (even after FB was restarted). So look for that or any other apps that might be having issues. Given that fast charging was not working for days until I tried this and started working again immediately afterwards, it's unlikely this was a coincidence and something else was the issue (though not impossible).

Quick charge doesn't work when screen is on means you're having too much apps running when the screen is on. trying using greenify.. works for me

I had similar problems a few days ago. There was a terrible bug in Facebook and Facebook messenger where the battery consumption was extremely high. Even with quick charge, the apps were draining the battery faster than its charging.
When I completely shut off the phone, it charges very quickly. So, try that first. Power down and do a quick charge. If it charges quick, then try reinstalling or updating your Facebook and messenger apps.

You will know if quick charge is working because the battery icon in the top right of the screen has a circle around it.

The problem is that even though it is "fast-charging" it actually charges very slowly. I have the notification saying it is fast-charging and the circle inside the battery but the battery percentage increases extremely slowly.
I had the HTC bolt with quick charge 2.0 and it charged so much faster than the V20.

There are a few factors.
If your screen is on, or if you are using the phone while charging, it will not quick charge. Quick charge only happens when the screen is off. It will charge faster if your phone is powered off.
Also, if the battery rise to a certain temperature, it will stop quick charge too. Similarly, once the battery reach about 80% charge, charging is also slower.

Switch to your lock screen it should say fast charging and when it comes to LG phones the cable matters more than the charger used.

None of these "factors" hindered the HTC Bolt from charging much much more quickly than this phone, and it uses an older version of quick charge.
I'm familiar with how quickly the phone charges when powered down.

It already says it is quick charging! The issue is that the charge rate, even when "quick-charging" is slow as molasses. And the original post clearly stated the stock charger is being used

In that OP post he doesn't state if he tried a different charger as my post implies, do you even use your critical thinking skills much?
I've had stock LG chargers fail to maintain the fast charging speed even though it stated "fast charging" or in old devices it states charging then switches to "slow charging." The devices I was able to replicate were the LG G Pad 8.3, LG G3, & LG V10. The irony was the Samsung chargers worked best with the LG devices.

Slightly off topic, but I just wanted to mention how impressed I am with charging speeds when using a PC (perhaps other USB ports?). All my chargers are hard wired Micro USB except for my V20 charger and my Note 7 charger. They both quick charge which I don't like to do so I've been using my PC USB port to charge. It's been getting almost a percent a minute which to me is mind blowing. I'm sure it's slow compared to the regular charger but it's way faster than I've ever seen from a computer USB port before.

Try disabling Facebook and Facebook messenger and charge again. Or if you know which app is misbehaving, then try disabling that too.

I hope people realize that the stock LG charger can barely be considered a fast charger. It uses the QC1.0 standard while the phone is capable of QC 3.0. LG has never included a proper charger in any of their Quick Charge capable devices.

OEM Charger & Cable nother Quick Charging. Phone says it is.

From my understanding when the battery is lower than 50% the Stock OEM charger is suppose to feed 9v at 1.6a. And after 50% it's supposed to drop back down to 5v 2a. My stock OEM charger and Cable does not go to 9v at all. I didn't see the charger go to 4v. Would not show amperage.
Heres photo after letting charge for 10min under 50%

Yes I do. And it says fast charging when plugged in in the notification menu and on the home screen

Try a diffrent app i noticed u were using ampre i was getting eronnous readings on my g4. U mqy have to set some of the variables in ampre cause of the way it reads
It always says my g4 is charging at 500 mah. And i know its not true. Everything else said 1.5 amps

I use 3c toolboxes battery managerbut still has to be tweaked for rite readings
also if samsungs anything like lg when the screens on it don't fast charge normally to keep the heat down
like rite now my fast charge is only 1.5 amps
its always changing it might fast charge for 2 or 3 min then drop off for 2 or 3 min kind of thing
I personally don't like fast charge its hard on a battery the slower you charge em the longer they'll last
imo
just like a car battery slow charges are always better

I normally turn my phone off when I'm charging the battery because it charges so much faster and the heat and stuff. So I'll leave it off till it's done or close and take it out of the case. It doesn't take long so I don't mind doing that. I got looking into this because I was looking to purchase a new cable and wanted to be able to compare and make sure I was getting the same charge times.

I got it and I never use it
1 it takes longer
2 it generates more heat killing the battery faster

Idk I'm not really into the entire idea. Yes it's nice. But when I know I can get a faster charge plugged in it just seems useless.

Actually, I use the computer (either my desktop or one of my notebooks) to charge my devices (Galaxy Nexus , Lenovo tablet, and Galaxy S7 that is awaiting pickup by its owner). While the two Samsungs both support wireless charging (yes - the GNex does as well - as long as it is running MM or later), I prefer wired charging.

Hearing that you use your computer to charge your devices is like screeching nails on a chalkboard to me ?

Do you use your (smart)phone when at your desktop? I usually don't.

Why is that? As long as your computer supports USB 2.0 (and unless it's older than Windows Vista, it likely does) and your phone or tablet is *newer* than the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, it's a standard feature (of both PC and phone - the same also applies to portable computers - such as laptops and notebooks). Yes - it's a trickle-charge (compared to plugging it into a wall charger or cigarette lighter) - however. I'm more than likely using my PC while the devices are plugged into unused-otherwise USB ports - it's not like the USB ports they are plugged into are doing anything else. (In short, I'm not sacrificing USB ports to use them for that purpose - out of the ten USB ports my desktop PC supports, I'm only using - for all purposes - six; I have four headers that I am not using at all.) On top of that, most USB chargers for Android devices are of the "wall-wart" type OR are cursed with short cord length - or both. (Yuck to both.)
I don't need a fast-charge - and especially not when I can top off using a trickle-charge while not using my phone OR tablet - and I'm usually not when I'm at my desktop PC.
