Low volume while playing to music! - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a music guy! I listen to music a lot! I use Beats By Dre Studio headphones... I have MoDaCo based on stock rom installed...
I think that the volume on this phone is just too low! I tried installing this mod
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012575
and it just sounded terrible!
When I have my headphones plugged in to my pc it's totally loud and clear!
What should I do? any suggestions for me?
I am super sensitive about the quality

I have beats tours and they sound loud and hurt my ears at max. Try the audio mod in the themes and apps section.

After installing Awesome Beats I'm scared to try random mods... do you know any sort of player that may increases the volume?
earphones are always very load because you put them in your ear and headphones are more clear.
Studios sound awesome i don't want to go back to earphones

how about trying these to increase volume? they are what i use.

Hard to carry around specially at the gym
what music player do you guys use?

Stupid question...is it plugged in all the way?
I find the jack weird and sometimes I swore I connected my ear buds fully in when in reality they had that "extra" click to go thorough.

that fiio headphone amp is tiny (< 2" square), weighs next to nothing and has a clip on it.

I use Sennheiser CX 300 II earbuds and PlayerPro music player and have no problems with low volume. I've also used MP3Gain, a windows app, to level all my music volumes inside the MP3 files themselves. You can set the level as high or low as you like. I've noticed that MP3's from amazon.com typically have the volume set at 99 dB which is much louder than from other sources so I level all my MP3's down to the default 89 dB in MP3Gain.

...chuck away the beats. its going to spoil your ears >_>
the CX300II is a great all rounder. you could also try the Feels Pro.900 (korean company hence the weird name), the Audio Technica CKM500 is not bad as well.

Default sound volume on Nexus 4 is incredibly low. I'd say 50% lower than the HTC One X with beats for example.
The only mod I have found that increases the volume is the Nocturnal mod in the Android Development forum. I am not sure what rom's it's compatible with but I am using AOKP.
While it increases the volume, it's still not enough, and the quality of the music on the Nexus 4, mod or not, is just not good enough.

have you tried this mod? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2025486
it works and the speaker is as loud as my droid razr

Bluetooth is amazing!!

Specifically the sound quality when streaming music. Wow is all I can say. I stream music to my motorcycle helmet (Chatterbox Xbi2) and have lots of listening experience with my Garmin Zumo GPS and my 3GS iPhoney. I must say that my i9000 kicks both their tales by a huge margin. I fidelity of the sound is fantastic, a tiny bit of base is lost but holy moly the rest is awesome. I'm not sure if it can attributed to BT 3.0 or what but I don't care, I am happy. Good job Samsung.
agree
i used to stream a lot of BT using previous phone, but the BASE on the i9000 is almost intact even after streaming

Bluetooth streaming in BMW
I have an Iphone 4 and a SGS and except for the stuttering on my radio. (which the iphone 4 doesnt do) the sound is really really good and is MUCH better than iphone 4 streaming quality. I am very pleased with the quality. I believe Froyo will fix it. . Still cant dial out using Bluetooth on SGS
there are tricks to dial out using BT
and it will depend on your headset or the car deck function keys
or voice activation key

Is it then worthwhile to buy a BT headset?
I mean, will the sound quality of a good BT headset, be as good as a wired headset? And wich one?
I have no idea...
I've been an avid fan of Samsung's Yepp line of MP3 players. They have some of the best quality audio output on the market. WAY WAY WAY better than iPod's.
It's not surprising to see their know-how transfer over to their high-end Galaxy line.

I haven't tried a household bluetooth headset but if the quality is the same as my helmet one I would consider it over a corded version if the circumstance required it. I'm interested in trying out a bunch now just to see.

Terrible Speaker!!!!!!

I'm on this G2, and the build is great but DAMN the external speaker is terrible! In calls and in games... It's like scratching my ears. Anyone else feel this way?
No one else having speaker issues?? Should I get a replacement?
I have the same problem when its at its highest volume setting but that's normal for htc phones I had the same thing from my G1 to my nexus 1 so idk about returning but you could

Yeah, it sounded pretty shrill and metallic. I was not a fan.
I guess my question would be: "What phone has a good speaker?"
The Vibrant sounds gorgeous compared to this.
the Droid 2 has a good speaker as well..... but that shouldn't be a deciding factor.

yeah, i noticed that motorola phones usually have very good external speakers.
Yes, motorola's got great speakers. I had a rizr and a rokr e8. One of those speakers was better than the g1 and g2's combined! Just a figure of speech of course...
This one does sound pretty crappy though but it never gets used in my use so that's really not a concern to me.
Even so, don't think you'll get a replacement because of it...

Yeah, it's pretty bad. It's also not very loud. I was a bit shocked when i tried to play Pandora through it today...

The Incredible actually has a great speaker. Very loud and fairly clear.
My G2 speaker on the other hand, (why cant they use the same speaker in all their phones?) is not great. not even as good as the nexus imo. Its quieter and a bit less clear.
P.S. Check out this pic detailing the difference between the G2 speaker and Incredible speaker. Big difference in size and mesh cover.

to me the speaker is VERY loud and pretty clear but it ALL highs just sounds like a tweeter. no real signs of "bass" at all sounds like a car stereo with just tweeters lol
Did you notice that the Sim Card goes halfway into the speaker lol!!
Maybe if we could apply a bassy equalizer to all sounds it would sound better. Any idea how to do this?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 RMAA Tests

The 7.7 sure is a solid performer. It has no bass roll-off with low impedance phones (meaning, probably no capacitors in the output path), it has low enough output impedance to drive multi-armature IEMs with crossovers properly, it has decent enough SNR and dynamic range. It measures not quite as well as a Sansa Clip or a modern iDevice, but it's better than, say, Cowons in some aspects (especially bass roll-off).
Same as all other Android devices I tested it has some slight audible background hiss with most IEMs - I guess that has to be fixed in Android, though, not in the hardware.
Frequency response with various loads:

Here's the link to the full results: http://rmaa.elektrokrishna.com/index.php?dir=Comparisons/&search=galaxy+tab&search_mode=f
Also, just for fun, found in the results above - not that anyone with half a brain would believe that "audiophile" scam players like Neutron MP really sound any different (or even "better") than the next non-broken software player, but I compared it to Rockbox... and of course they measure exactly the same. (Yeah, I also listened to both with my very own ears and couldn't hear any difference.)
Also, Player Pro seems kinda broken at times, with way too high distortions - I repeated the measurements several times in RMAA, but they always turned out the same. Not sure what that is, but I doubt those are realistic results, so I would take them with a grain of salt.
Nice results!
Have you noticed the problem when the audio cuts on/off during low level passages when listening at low volumes? With real high sensitivity earphones one can even hear the 7.7's background noise mute and un-mute.
Yes, I noticed the background hiss - you even hear it when you click the system bar to go to the mini apps. Audio gets activated shortly, resulting in some background hiss. I noticed the same on my Cowon and Archos Android devices too, 2.2 and 2.3 respectively - seems that's a general Android issue.
Also, it's somewhat annoying that Android resamples everything to 44.1kHz (with linear interpolation, I assume). That's no issue for music playback since most everything is at 44.1kHz anyways - but most video stuff is at 48kHz and gets rudely resampled.
A 44.1kHz sine sweep in MX Player:
Same in 48kHz:
Hello,
I am a regular user of this tab but not too informed regarding this. Just want to ask if what would this mean to us users of the P6800?
Is it possible that the Samsung tab 7.7 be used as a music device? (ie. Irig in iDevices) I'm curious about this test. Sent thanks

I don't think that's the case on some devices. I have Nexus S and on my Headset getting the sliders higher to 3.0 from 10-100 range makes my headset do this distort sound. Sounds like it getting shattered, but this setup removes that sound but I can still clearly hear guitar leads fine and clear along with some monster bass.
Even this is good stuff

The BEST settings for your music are based on your device/amp/headphones/inner ear/brain combination. Sharing them is as pointless as sharing YOUR favourite water temperature for taking a bath. But nevertheles proper eq settings are cruicial. To find them just use XenoAmp headphone calibration.
P.S. I'm using FiiO Mt Blanc + Phonak Audeo 232 + 38 years old ears (cleaned) + a slightly used brain.
Try this using any beats audio headphones or the stock sony earphones. No regrets at all.
