Terrible Speaker!!!!!! - G2 and Desire Z General

I'm on this G2, and the build is great but DAMN the external speaker is terrible! In calls and in games... It's like scratching my ears. Anyone else feel this way?

No one else having speaker issues?? Should I get a replacement?

I have the same problem when its at its highest volume setting but that's normal for htc phones I had the same thing from my G1 to my nexus 1 so idk about returning but you could

mine's the same

Yeah, it sounded pretty shrill and metallic. I was not a fan.
I guess my question would be: "What phone has a good speaker?"

The Vibrant sounds gorgeous compared to this.

the Droid 2 has a good speaker as well..... but that shouldn't be a deciding factor.

yeah, i noticed that motorola phones usually have very good external speakers.

Yes, motorola's got great speakers. I had a rizr and a rokr e8. One of those speakers was better than the g1 and g2's combined! Just a figure of speech of course...
This one does sound pretty crappy though but it never gets used in my use so that's really not a concern to me.
Even so, don't think you'll get a replacement because of it...

What? Its that bad? Someone told me it was "loud and clear". Was planning on doing some gaming on my Desire Z..

Yeah, it's pretty bad. It's also not very loud. I was a bit shocked when i tried to play Pandora through it today...

Thasts weird, i think it sounds pretty decent in this clip.

Sounds crackly on Chrono Cross, but otherwise good.

The Incredible actually has a great speaker. Very loud and fairly clear.
My G2 speaker on the other hand, (why cant they use the same speaker in all their phones?) is not great. not even as good as the nexus imo. Its quieter and a bit less clear.

P.S. Check out this pic detailing the difference between the G2 speaker and Incredible speaker. Big difference in size and mesh cover.

to me the speaker is VERY loud and pretty clear but it ALL highs just sounds like a tweeter. no real signs of "bass" at all sounds like a car stereo with just tweeters lol

Did you notice that the Sim Card goes halfway into the speaker lol!!

Maybe if we could apply a bassy equalizer to all sounds it would sound better. Any idea how to do this?

EVO 4G Speaker

Has anyone else noticed the speaker on the EVO is freakin' brilliant? When I am listening to podcasts or playing games it's amazing. I mean, it's no 5.1, but it's like it's got a tiny subwoofer in there or something!
In fact, when I listen to podcasts before bed I have both my Nexus One and EVO docked there, but I have switched over to the EVO exclusively for podcasts. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just hallucinating?
That was one of the first things I noticed. The speaker is fantastic. Almost as good as the touch pro 2. The Nexus speaker is horrible by comparison
Totally agree. That was one of my biggest concerns when I bought it.
The Nexus speaker just flat out sucks! It sounds great, but it's wayyyy to quiet.
My Droid has the loudest speaker of any phone I've ever had and it's wonderful, and I have to say the Evo is easily on par with it. The Evo speaker may be a tiny bit quieter, but it also sounds better at full volume, so it balances out.
I was quite surprised at how good it was. Was setting myself up for a let down after the TP2's excellent dual speakers.

lol I was setting my self up for someone complaining about the speaker. I agree, the speaker is freaking amazing!
I'm not impressed. When driving, even with navigation at max volume, it is still too quiet, IMHO. Of course, it doesn't help that I'm coming from a Nokia with stereo speakers.
Loudest Cell phone speaker I've had so far. I never had a TP2, but it even beats my iPad's speaker hands down.
IMO, the speaker is slight letdown, compared to the TP2. The TP2 had the best speaker for phone conferencing I've ever used.
Just got mine today and I am really impressed with the speaker quality. Volume level isn't even half-way and I can hear it quite well
i agree... TP2 with AudioPara was great!

I think it's a bit unfair to hold it to that standard considering how big the TP2 was.
I guess I'm the minority. Coming from the iPhone, the EVO's speaker sounds blown out. It's loud, but it sounds pretty terrible. Maybe mine is defective?

It's not audiophile grade by a long shot. I believe everyone's praise is coming from a speakerphone perspective. I will still use my shure headphones for music. But when it comes to built in speakers. The Evo is second only to the TP2 IMO.
But yours indeed could be blown out. It wouldn't hurt to compare it to another evo if you have access to another one.

Bluetooth is amazing!!

Specifically the sound quality when streaming music. Wow is all I can say. I stream music to my motorcycle helmet (Chatterbox Xbi2) and have lots of listening experience with my Garmin Zumo GPS and my 3GS iPhoney. I must say that my i9000 kicks both their tales by a huge margin. I fidelity of the sound is fantastic, a tiny bit of base is lost but holy moly the rest is awesome. I'm not sure if it can attributed to BT 3.0 or what but I don't care, I am happy. Good job Samsung.
agree
i used to stream a lot of BT using previous phone, but the BASE on the i9000 is almost intact even after streaming

Bluetooth streaming in BMW
I have an Iphone 4 and a SGS and except for the stuttering on my radio. (which the iphone 4 doesnt do) the sound is really really good and is MUCH better than iphone 4 streaming quality. I am very pleased with the quality. I believe Froyo will fix it. . Still cant dial out using Bluetooth on SGS
there are tricks to dial out using BT
and it will depend on your headset or the car deck function keys
or voice activation key

Is it then worthwhile to buy a BT headset?
I mean, will the sound quality of a good BT headset, be as good as a wired headset? And wich one?
I have no idea...
I've been an avid fan of Samsung's Yepp line of MP3 players. They have some of the best quality audio output on the market. WAY WAY WAY better than iPod's.
It's not surprising to see their know-how transfer over to their high-end Galaxy line.

I haven't tried a household bluetooth headset but if the quality is the same as my helmet one I would consider it over a corded version if the circumstance required it. I'm interested in trying out a bunch now just to see.

Galaxy S4 Speaker Loudness

Anyone know if any comparisons or video's showing the loudness of the S4's external speaker? How does it compare to the Note 2 or HTC One?
I'm not talking about raw stats but a video showing something playing on the S4.

Still doesn't play a video or music to show the loudness /quality of the speaker.
Any other video's that do?
Check out the gsmarena review. It actually compares the speaker loudness volume of different phones. They rate gs4 as good, comparable to the one.

I already read that review like I said in my first post would like a video just like there are tons of videos showcasing htc boom sound.
I would love to know the quality of the speaker output. Don't really need it to be any louder, just sound better. For boombox purposes. Thicker phones traditionally have better speakers. The Note and Note 2 have better speakers than the GS2 and GS3. Since the GS4 is only 7.9mm, and there hasn't been any major speaker breakthroughs in...forever, I wonder how it fares quality wise with other phones.
It will be better then my galaxy nexus speakers for sure. Either way I have a small portable Bluetooth speaker that has amazing quality and is louder then I will ever need it to get.

And apparently those numbers don't actually have anything to do with the loudness, check over in the One thread for more info

Audio noise when charging

OK, I finally found something that isn't perfect. If you are charging phone and have earphones on, there is some (CPU?) noise from doing stuff with the GUI. I first noticed it changing settings on Neutron (no music playing). Then messing around with anything with GUI, notifications, etc seems to do it. I have not been able to hear it unless phone is charging.
Try it and see what you think.
I guess this is perhaps a side effect of the headphone on the bottom.

Is it a fairly quite buzzing/humming noise? I've had this on pretty much every phone ive ever used, you can also put your ear up to the speaker and hear it.

No, it is a cpu noise, high pitched whine, correlated to doing things on screen. For example, pulling down notification window.
My I9300 does not do it.
the rezound did this exact thing and they fixed it in an OTA.. i believe it was a software fix.
doesn't have to do with headphones on bottom. rezound was on top

That's great to hear!
I have the same issue on my old s3, although I haven't tried on the g2 yet. On the s3 it was the pwm adjusting on the charger to match changing current draw from the phone. Sounds like it may be the same here.
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium HD app
FWIW, the noise seems to be only using wall charger. I don't hear it charging on pc.
This sounds like what I hear. I can hear this from the speaker on mine all the time even when not on the charger. Initially I thought I only heard it while on a call but then for some reason I put the phone to my ear when not on a call and I still heard the noise. It is very annoying and I have taken it to two different VZW stores to try and get them to replace it because I figured it was a defective phone but they couldn't hear it so they wouldn't do anything. Does anyone else hear this noise when not on the charger? The sound sounds similar to what you described and seems like some CPU noise or possibly the radio. Maybe this is an inherent issue with all of the G2 but hopefully they will release an update that can fix it.
Only with stock charger
Hi,
I have been holding off rooting and modding my phone because of this issue. Now that I found this thread and know that it is a common issue I won't bother with an exchange.
Nice catch that charging from the PC does not generate any noise. I have subsequently tested with PC USB charging and an old HTC charger and I get no noise when using them.
I believe it is down to the high charging current of the stock charger and the way the phone handles high-speed charging.
However if I had had this noise even when not charging I definitely would have sent it back.
I have the some problem too..it's annoying when you are charging your phone and use it in the same time
I have noticed the noise only in the right channel. Same for anyone else?

Hear faint static from earpiece. Is that normal?

If I bring the phone to my ear I can hear faint static noise, like it's transmitting something. Sometimes it sounds similar to a fax. I can only hear it when I bring it to my ear. It's always there, unless I turn off the phone. I tried disabling data and putting it in airplane mode, nothing works. Any suggestions as to why it's doing that?

Ok, seriously, what you're hearing is the result of you being swallowed in a huge field of radiation. Just think of all the wireless signals, from mobile networks, wi-fi, to the leftover radiation of the Big Bang. That's what you're hearing. Those signals interfere with the magnets inside the ear piece, and produce static noise. It happens to all phones, more or less.
funny. seriously though, this is what i hear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wOxtzStUZ4
apparently this issue has been around since the phone was first released. some people hear it very loud, luckily for me, its not that bad. i've never experienced anything like that with my other phones. mind you, this is going on all the time, not just when im on the call. just think its strange.

I have it too. Don't worry about it.
I also have this. This is likely to be a circuit board trace that is too close to the speaker module causing interference.
There are similar reports about static coming from the headphone jack caused when the proximity sensor is active.
Likely a design flaw
Just something that we will have to live with
