Yes, here is yet another guide to obtaining a WP7/8 activation code from Microsoft... with an added advantage!
I have helped a handful of people from around the world on XDA to obtain codes successfully using the chat URL below and using a genuine HTC HD7 IMEI code created with my IMEI generator tool. With the advantage of a genuine IMEI code Microsoft have no reason to say no!
prerequisites:
You have a Windows Live account (you will need this for Windows Phone anyway)
You have downloaded my IMEI generator from here (mirror), run it, and hit generate for your code!
You have an ice cold beer to hand for celebratory purposes
1.) Log on to Microsoft Live Chat here. Click on 'Chat' and log in with your Live ID
2.) You will be asked for a few details before an agent connects and starts to chat including phone model. As far as Microsoft are concerned, you own a HTC HD7 and can't access the Marketplace or use emails. I recommend not being too 'tech-savvy' to aid your case as the helpless (Microsoft) customer and remember, you ARE the customer and they are there to help you
3.) Soon an agent will respond and They will ask you for a few more details such as network operator and for the IMEI code of the handset. Make sure you have the IMEI from my generator to hand. See the conversation from when I activated my first Windows Phone below for reference. This was also using a code made by my generator
4.) Crack that beer open as the Microsoft agent replies with your Windows Phone Activation Code
Here is the chat conversation from when I obtained my code. I play Emeth, a helpless, innocent customer, devastated by my second-hand HD7 which will not let me use Live Services. I am being attended to by the very helpful 'Bill G' at Microsoft:

Bill G.:Hello , my name is Bill G. with Microsoft Support. Please give me a few moments as I review the information you've submitted.
(Before the chat started I filled out a form with a brief description of my issue where I stated my HD7 cannot access the marketplace)
Bill G.:Thank you for waiting, Emeth. How are you today? I can immediately give you the activation code you need.
(Really? That easy?)
Emeth:I'm great thanks. Thank you, that would be very helpful
Bill G.:Sure! I just need a few info about the phone: the mobile operator and the IMEI, please. (You can see the IMEI by typing *#06#).
Emeth:I am using my old Vodafone SIM (this did not come with the phone) but I do not have the phone with me. I have a product code on the receipt, may this be it? 352811042776595
(Of course this is it. I just pasted it from my keygen)
Bill G.:Thank you Jeff. Your activation code is: DOWNL-OADMY-KEYGE-NANDG-ETURS. I suggest you to keep it for the future.

Bill G.:Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

I said that the model was a nokia lumia 900 and I told him my phone imei htc hd2 and got the activation code, hahahaha
Awesome...thanks for that, I didn't realise I needed a HD7 code so I gave them the real HD2 one last time and it wouldn't activate. But using a generated code work straight away, thanks!
Stupid question...but you can re-use the same code after reflashing your phone right?

I have to say a BIG thank you for helping me out. I have battled this problem like forever and I finally recieved the codes through Chat with someone in Microsoft. However, the challenge I now face is with the SET UP ACCOUNT. I am told " You've reached the maximum number of setup accounts allowed for a windows phone. Another way, i can't find imei genarator.

I'm using a SoftBank X01HT, with the latest HTC WM5 rom. I've noticed that all incoming calls, even local show a +1 at the beginning... the Canadian country code. When trying to return calls, I've had to add these numbers to my address book and then remove the +1, and then dial. Is there any way to setup the phone so it doesn't show the +1?
Thanks.
Any ideas?
I think you may dial with the +1 but you won't get charged as international call (if you are in the +1 zone). Try a number and see if you get charged.

This is per the GSM standard. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, GSM network operators have to support +CountryCode-AreaCode-Number format, even for local calls. Leave your contacts in this format, then you don't have to make any changes when/if you travel to another country. You will not be charged long distance if it is a local call, even if you use this format.

If you used the search function this has already been addressed, and it is the standard dialling code for the US.
Sorry, I should elaborate. When returning calls that came from +1 (local calls), it refuses to connect until I redial without the +1. This is the correct calling code for both Canada and the US.
edit: I'm on Rogers Pay as You Go, and the provider shows as "UMTS Rogers". I haven't done anything special to make the phone work, I just put my SIM in.

If you are using standard GSM cellular to make your calls rather than VoIP, having +1 at the start of the number should work when you attempt to call. It works for me, I do it every day. I am not using Pay as you Go, but that shouldn't make a difference, I would have thought.

Yes exactly, however using the VoIP component of WM6 the + part of the intl dialling code isnt recognised correctly, this might be the issue possibly if using PTT aswell??

Thanks for that ban I see how it was extremely necessary. Good luck on your future backseat moderating endeavors.
Carrying on: it seems my problem isn't the '1', but the '+'. All incoming calls show a +1, if I dial a number with a 1, it goes through fine, but if I dial a number with +1 it immediately ends the call. I don't think I'm using any voip stuff, as I'm running WM5. Is there any way to strip the + part?

First, Moderation is often "backseat". There are only a few Mods and over 80,000 active members. In any case I don't go looking for problems, I go looking to help people with questions. If I spot something (usually Spam, or moving posts around) or a member makes a request for action then it is dealt with by the Mod or referred to the Admins. In your case it was a bit of both. In your case it was nothing to do with your posts, but the method of signing on.
Well before you get banned again perhaps you'd like to explain to the rest of us who like to know at least a little about the person we are speaking to, why this is a good idea:
http://www.bugmenot.com/
At a time when we are cautious about who comes and goes on this site (following our "situation" with M$) it does not help to know that you could in fact be 1 of several hundred using the name bugmenot. It also seems so utterly pointless since you are not required to publically display any info you do not wish to - so why not register the way you are supposed to?
Since everyones IP address is logged anyway I cannot see this being a privacy thing just an I can't be bothered registering thing!!
It might surprise you to know that many folks here are proud to be members and proud to have a unique identity. Your questions seem very reasonable as do the posts you make - at least so far as we know you to be one person and not one of many logging in using your sign-in details. I tried signing in the other day with one of the bugmenot passwords and yes I got on. It does not take much imagination to realise why we cannot allow open names/passwords to persist - but I would be interested to hear your side.
Mike
Why would I get banned again?
Bugmenot is a good solution for people who don't feel like juggling around hundreds of internet identities on various forums. With the Firefox extension, I can visit any website, and when prompted to login I just right click and choose to login with a public account. On here, I needed an account to search the forums and download attachments. When I needed to post a thread, I decided against making a new account since I was already cookied and able to post anyway.
By backseat moderating, I was not referring to an instance of someone reporting a post against forum rules or any legitimate reason where a moderator would be needed. I was referring to Applestar order to close the account and encouragement to limit posting ability for new accounts. I did read the forum rules before posting, and nowhere was it mentioned that account sharing or using public accounts is against any rules.
"Newbie" posts are a genuine concern on every forum, but limiting posting ability to new accounts is a horrible solution that will only delay people from post spamming or making stupid threads. A better solution is to simply make as much information available to people without requiring them to register an account. This site is a shining example of that; the wiki is full of an enormous amount of information, links to resources, and is easily searchable. A good improvement to the forums would be to enable searching and file attachment downloads for non members. If someone has come here to get a few files and to find a bit of information on their phone, forcing them to register an account is only encouraging them to post and to be a member of this community. And this being a developer community, is there really any need to encourage the types of people who came for files to have accounts?
Your Microsoft concern is completely invalid. I'd be embarrassed for Microsoft if they thought using a public account was a good method if infiltrating a community like this. They likely have people watching over these forums, and I can guarantee you they're not here on a public account or with any sort of Microsoft related name/profile.
You're right: it's absolutely an "I can't be bothered registering" thing. But in addition to that, I have nothing to contribute here. I wouldn't want to fall into the category of the hundreds of users you already have who have hundreds of posts all consisting of "thanks" or really ridiculous questions that were answered already.
Well, some good points IMHO. However the general principal is the subject of Admin consideration. I am not entirely convinced the "public account" idea is a good one given that not everyone is as sensible as you - yes if everyone were users of common sense I believe it could work well for the reasons you give, but open account information that becomes commonly known on the net could encourage the "lunatic fringe" to post brainless rubbish.
So I will take the Pontius Pilate approach- since it's Easter and start washing my hands! (Guess which part you get!)

thats funny stuff right there...
But maybe there is a simple solution to all of this and i have taken this suggestion to the admin.. But i think maybe we should see about granting bugmenot an account that does not have posting rights. Then people can use that account to download files. If people want support then they should register their own account... sounds simple enough to me

An interesting proposal. It would mean this particular "bugmenot" would have to register properly though cos he/she likes to make posts.

So, going back to the thread topic. Any ideas? I'm still unable to return any incoming calls because of the plus (+) symbol in front of the numbers. Is anyone else here on Rogers pay as you go? Do incoming calls show a "+" for anyone else?

It may be the standard but they don't HAVE to support it unfortunately - Softbank in Japan does not support +country code dialing and I believe there are a couple other networks in Taiwan or Korea that are the same. Pisses me off too because I have to make separate addressbook entries for when I'm inside Japan and outside Japan.
Anyone know of any utility that can automatically add or remove digits when dialing? The Nokia 6681 smartphone had a number prefix feature that worked really well.
You should request that they strip these digits.

If your telecom provider doesn't support it then they should strip these digits. I am a Central Office Tech and this does not take a genius to remove preceding digits. So call them up and question their technical abilities! WHAT!!!
Have seen several questions about how to get one of these codes so thought I'd share an easy method...
http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_selector_chat?ws=support#
Click general. Tell them you are setting up windows phone 7 and it required an activation.
they asked for my name, phone number, and manufacturer of phone (HTC)
within a minute I had my code
Hope it helps
i went that link and found no "general".... geehh, wanted to activate wp today, but g2g sleep
maybe sum1 can pm me an activation code ?
By 'General' do you mean:

I visit there, chat with the supporter... And he told me to call my local supporter.
I said I called but they couldn't provide me an activation code so I contact US.
He told me to call the activation center and didn't give me any code :|

worked for me too from germany. just chose United states as location and got it.
hmm.. could you get me one? I tried but I can't seem to get in.
Please
tried chatting and they told me to call support
I tried chatting with general chat, as the instructions said, and they told me to call the technical support 800 number right away rather than giving me an activation code. I think they've caught on to this. :-(
Dammit, even though I selected united states as my location the agent said I was from the UK so I needed to give them a call
Worked for me now...after trying 6 or 7 times..
I don't understand why some of them are lying and saying that they dont have the tools to do it and that I have to call the support instead.
works like a charm!
had to give the support agent following informations: full name (real), phone number (my number), brand of phone (htc), no live id, no imei, no specific model name
had to wait a couple of minutes while she generated my key and got it!
Worked for me!
This is easier than I thought. I got an activation code within 5 minutes with the first rep. Thanks!

Hi,
Could someone please pm me with an activation code, I have had to re-install my Rom and now can't get a code out of MS : (.
Help very much appreciated.
It appears that the codes are re-useable so I wouldn't complain about an already used code : )
Thanks to anyone willing to help me out.
I really dont understand why people ask other members for activation codes.
Those who have codes have done the work for themselves.
Its not too hard to get a code yourself.
If you live in another country, install skype and call the TOLL FREE number and get your code.
I always up for helping someone out, but I see all these members asking others for codes just because they are lazy and dont want to spend 5 minutes on the phone to get a code.

Microsoft have stopped giving out codes, you now need an IMEI and contact HTC, hence why I am asking somebody to kindly share an activation code. But yes I do see your point.
Unfortunately at this point in time, if I want to use WP7 I need an activation code, I have no way of acquiring one myself, so I have to hope that one of the xda members will be kinder than yourself and share a code with me.

Microsoft aren't asking for an IMEI, they're forwarding UK users direct to HTC where you now need to confirm an IMEI for a WP7 phone, which obviously I can't provide. I'm not asking for anyone's right arm here mate, not even for anyone to contact Microsoft on my behalf. The codes are re-usable as stated in my first post.
I'm simply asking for someone that is fortunate to have a valid code to share it with me, if I could get one for myself I would, but I can't.
And anyone that is willing to share will have my utmost gratitude.
I have also tried gaining a code through Microsoft support chat with no joy. If some one in the US could gain a code for me I would be willing to make a donation?
The code is only usable for 3 times, then you have to get back on to MS for another one.
Thats why other people will not share there code, as if they have to re-boot, then they will have to use the code again etc etc.
I had this problem, and contacted MS and they supplied me with another code.
Oh you want to know how to get a new code. Well MS ask for your and/or your name/email/D.O.Birth/tel number etc etc. This is for there records. So when your code runs out, you tell them you had an accident with the phone (Dropped down the toilet what ever) and you had a new replacemnt via insurance. Because they already have your detals, they will issue you a new code. No problem. (I have already done it, and the girl i spoke to had a laugh with me.)
For you young guy's that are trying. When you call them, tell them your name, and then put your mum on the phone to the MS operator. She can say Johnie has this new phone i bought for him, but it is asking for some code.)
There see mum got the code.. And always ask them to email it to you. as when there's a problem. Email them back with that copy.
Job Done.

4 hours ago from this post I got my Key. All I did was ask and she generated a key for me. It's interesting that they are asking for an IMEI. How many times have you called? If you try more than once someone may give it to you.
Hi,
Phoned Microsoft again this morning, was told again that I have to phone HTC with an IMEI number : (, as I've already stated I will happily donate if anybody is still able to get hold of one. It would appear that Microsoft UK have stopped giving out codes altogether.
Please help, I wouldn't ask if I could help myself.
pff if anyone could help he get a code? I'm willing to even pay you 5-10 EUR/USD.
Just so you know I tried everything but I can't get one..
Thankyou for you efforts HectIQ, I shall pay 10pounds GBP to the first person that can get me a working activation code.
key
please share some keys....i hear someone working on keygen?
is it right?
If you're in the UK, who do you phone or what site do you go to?
I've not yet found a reply thats says where you contact them, only ever "call ms to get one"
Thanks in advance.

It worked for me. Easy and simple
See i am having problems with my spoken word,so i contacted chat support and got the code in just 2 minutes...it is not that big of a deal...like talking to a GM on WoW....If anyone would have been worried to call the phone,he would have tried the chat...if he wanted the code so much that is.I got the code cuz i wanted to go daily driver on this as it fulfills all my needs.
My point being that if a person wants somehing that much...He could pretty much type the same amount of characters on the chat support window and obtain the code...
Peace out!

Do you need to type the key again or is it associated to windows live account?
I think I have no luck . All the times I tried , they tell me inform HTC. I tried by chat, email and phone . Now currently , my last chance is through my 4th attempt in live chat . They said need to research, will get back to me via my email in 24hrs. I'm not sure if they will give the codes .
I'm willing to donate a beer if someone is willing to help me get a code from ms. Will really appreciate it .
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App

Yes, I had to enter key again, the same one which I have got from microsoft for the first time.
Any posts from users sharing activation codes will be deleted. Users will be infracted and thread will be closed.
Don't make this happen guys!
I read somewhere that if an activation code is used to register another handset (with a different IMEI) then the first registered handset will become de-activated. You can re-activate the same handset as many times as you like, but from what i read - if you give your code to someone else and they use it - your handset will then be dead.
Hi, I tried getting an activation code in any way but microsoft won't give me...does anybody know if there's a key generator or something coming out?

No, that was a rumor started by somebody who has been banned multiple times because hes a scammer. (afaik).
What do M$ say to you when you ring them?
If they say to ask your carrier just say that you've been on phone to them multiple times and they keep sending you to M$, others have said that and got key.
First time they asked for an IMEI number. the second time, then they asked for a phone number and when I gave them mine, they told me to contact M$ in my country...
and these calls cost A LOT for me...
Just send them an email and they will give it to you

If you can't call them in your own country call the US support through skype - it's free. A code generator would be warez, and therefor not allowed on xda. Microsoft made a release vaguely saying that they don't really care and will continue giving away free codes.
Tried e-mail 3 times with 3 different e-mails. they didn't gave me a code. I guess I'm out of luck or just stupid...
I sent another email now without making up lots of stories and now they want my phone number, device, and name. What should i answer?(I told them I have hd7)
Its Easy
Hi Guys,
I did my HD2 yesterday and have another one to do once i get another class 6 memory card. I telephoned the German MS support number and after explaining that i was english and couldnt reach the english support number (so could she speak english?) explained that both myself and my girlfriend have just bought HD7's, the damn things wouldnt work without a key for live services and that the sales assistant mentioned nothing of this.
I offered to give both telephone numbers and asked if the one key code would work for both, she replied that she didnt need any telephone details from me as it doesnt matter and that she would have to give me 2 codes as one wouldnt work for both units. she then asked me for my name (i told her my name was fred something or other) and she then asked for an email address (i gave a fresh one i made for the pourpose without my details) A couple of minutes later she had generated both keys and gave them to me over the telephone.
She was really nice and well mannered and the whole thing was a breeze.
Really guys believe me when i say M$ do not give a damn about what handset you have. Its not like they are losing anything by giving out the keys, if anything they are creating potential marketplace shoppers.
I have an HD7 also and upon comparison the only difference i can see is camera quality, the function and feel is identical.
Best of luck to all those still trying,
Creamy
you must be silly if you don't try the skype method and give up!!
- uses your wifi or 3g internet (so its practically free)
- calls are very clear (even clearer than a normal mobile call)
- masks your location (support guy only ask me if canada or us)
- no queue time
- call completed in less than 5 minutes
i called at CST 9am and only tried once
they did not ask for my phone number or imei, just full name and live id
writing down the 25 digit code can be a pain in the arse though if the support guy has a foreign accent (no racism intended), you will need to make sure you wrote it down correctly by repeating back to him, then thank him nicely and disconnect from Skype, enjoy your HD 7 phone
*HTC has a lot of free useful apps in the marketplace, I would suggest grabbing them asap after activation
i try chat chat service..they keep telling me contact HTC or sales office..i try few time even the proxy..finally..i get my code via the online email support @ microsoft website~~no nd phone number either ..wat i said is jus
"QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS
Message: Hi..can i request a new activation code for my HTC HD7?
thankz a lot.."
then the jus give me the code like tat~~waste a lot of time on the online chat~
