Buying a Streak 5 - Streak 5 General

I currently have a Nokia Lumia 710. Used to have a Nokia 8800, N97, E63, E71 and N900. I am a fan of Nokia phones
But Windows OS sucks. I used to have an HTC Dash, rooted with different ROM's, it was decent, but the OS sucked.
So now I want to get another phone. It is either between a Blackberry 9900, Streak 5 or if I can find a good deal on a Galaxy Note. I looked around a bit, and it seems like an unlocked DS5 will only run on T-Mobiles 2G network; unless I find a AWS(?) phone. I use my phone a lot for work e-mails, but how bad would my speed be compared to T-Mobiles 4G.

edge speed didn't bother me at all.
but browsing website would be slow.

Can't get EDGE speeds with K-Jam, but can with 6230

I love my Nokia 6230's reception and edge speed, but missed the PocketPC functionality of my Jam, so I bought a K-Jam from Ebay.
Everything about it is perfect, except that I can't get edge speeds out of it.
I tether via Bluetooth from an OQO. When tethered to the Nokia, I get 90kbps+ from BBR's mobile speed test, but when tethered to the K-Jam, I'm getting 31kbps.
Any ideas what the problem could be?
I think your problem is that you have too much money! If you buy everyone that uses this forum an OQO it should work
(Seriously - I have no idea)
It's a business expense . Seriously, I have to manage our company's 18 web and media servers wherever I am, and the OQO with a good edge capable phone is a good way to do that.
Well, after speaking with T-Mobile, and them telling me there isn't anything they're doing to prevent edge speeds based on device, suddenly I started getting edge speeds, so this is resolved.

T-Mobile to have 3G by Summer

Well, according to Boy Genius Report T-mobile will be rolling out their 3G network by summer 2008 which is long overdue. What I'm curious about is how this will affect current users and rates. Will I have to buy a new phone or will my wing be able to use the new 3G network? Will the data rates go up or change from unlimited? Anybody heard any information on this?
Their 3G system is still GSM compatible, so having a wing is still ok. But that means they will have to release their 3G phone (a.k.a. Kaiser from what my sources tell me.)
As far as rates go: I dunno.
I'll just be glad when they stop messing around with the towers and service here.
will this affect the sucky EDGE??...
will they finish before AT&T?!
will it mean more stability in the connections??
will living near an airport mean you'll still get knocked off when a plane flies overhead??
who knows!.. but we will definitely find out sooner or later, right?

Awesome! Hopefully I'll be able to stream some decent videos and data on my wing once 3G comes around! Edge sucks when it comes to that. Appriciate the info!
But I thought the Wing is not 3G capable.
it would only make sense that the 2g network and equipment will still work until everyone has slowly migrated over to the new 3g network and the first phones would work on both networks.

I wanted the Tilt so damn bad I was almost willing to switch providers, but when I found out I could get a Wing for 79 bucks I stuck with T-Mo, thinking I'd wait ANOTHER year for them to roll out 3g. I would just have to buy a Kaiser if they came out with one that wasn't hobbled. (Can't someone put a 624mhz processor, and a decent amount of RAM in one of these? Is that too much to ask?)
Ya' know, maybe I should rethink that. I used a Psion 5 for years before switching to an iPAQ 2215, then a 2755-- all the while thinking: "Man, if I could get a keyboard, phone and Pocket PC rolled into one, that would be the best!"
I've had a Wing for a couple of months and I don't honestly recall one time that I've used the keyboard. Of course, it's keyboard is a piece of junk compared to the Psion 5's, but using the iPAQ's for so long conditioned me into a stylus typist.
I really have high hopes for Firefox portable on 3g though. This summer?--- well, I guess we've all heard that before!
I have heard different things, i surfed the net and these forums and i still get different things. all i wanna know is, is the wing compatible with the new 3G network coming out this summer?
No.
it will connect to the available compatible frequency. The expected 3/3.5G network will operate at a different frequency that the wing's radio doesn't connect to.
unless the newer radio roms somehow added that connection to that frequency... then no.

By the time T-mobile has their 3/3.5G..3.5+??.. network up and running smoothly.. HTC might well have a better and much sexier phone than the TyTn II....and from what I could tell the MDA Vario III is higher model of it than the original :O..unlike the Tilt which is a lower model but has this 1 advantage over it's big brother.. hope T-Mobile doesnt water down the Vario III before it gets over here, or should I say if?...and a maybe $300-$500 price tag for Vario III(via upgrade or contract and if they wait long enough it might be running a stock full, stable WinMobile 6.1 rather than buggy leaked one)versus $800+ for Kaiser? not to mention the still unsolved video drivers travesty with it :'(... new Touch Cruise and the P6500(Sedna) are pretty freaking sweet even compared to HTC's flagship TyTn II.
I actually love my phone enough that I might wait till next year for a phone with stock WinMobile 7 and all the freaky powers, motion sensor technology, and processors that phones running it are going to need. Those r going to make my Wing look like Razr! :'( I'll miss you Wing...btw, the TyTn II/Kaiser won't be able to run a lot of the previewed Windows Mobile 7 features either.
T-Mobiles 3G is slated to be substantially faster than AT&T's.
No one knows for sure if current 3G phones will work, but I have a Hermes and I'm being locked out of my internet in South Florida due to 3G testing, so i'm assuming it will work when it's released since I'm hitting a firewall right now.
A t-mobile rep on that board said they are going to have new pricing, so it's most likely going to be more expensive.
Questions...
I wonder if the prices for the unlimited data plans will change for people who are already in contracts. I'm paying an extra $19.99/month for the Total Internet add-on right now. Guess I'll just have to wait and see...
The Wing has 3G just not the one that we think is compatible to the new network right?

Ummm, isnt Tmo's 3G supposed to be on the 1700 MHz band? That means the tilt etc wont work........
I'm hearing mixed things from everyone. I hope the wing will work but no one knows for sure.
Wing To Shift
im gonna change to the shift soon and hopefully i dont have problems with service
A T-Mobile wing is not a 3G phone so drop it and get a 3G phone

WM 6.1

Has anyone tried putting Windows Mobile on instead of Android? I wish T-Mobile had a 3G Windows Mobile phone. I bought an AT&T Tilt thinking I got all of the kewl stuff I want and 3G speed to boot, only to find out T-Mobile uses dual freq for their 3G network instead of single like AT&T. So I have a way kewl Tilt that will never see 3G speeds. It would be awsome if I could take my G1, dump Android and run my WM 6.1. G1 phone would be good if it had TomTom and some of my other apps that I cannot live without.

Welcome to the forums! I think a little pre-reading could've helped you with your answer ahead of time...and saved you some money on a nice, new Tilt T-Mobile doesn't just use dual 3G frequency bands, but uses a brand new one that no other carrier in the world uses.
So far, plenty have talked about WM on a G1, but interest is low (at least on the end of the guys who could actually make it happen). Everyone's more excited about what can be done with Android.

We are doing opposites with one another. I switched from WM 3G(touch diamond) on AT&T to 2G G1. I would take 2G over that crappy OS anytime.
Well, at least my Tilt is a better alternative to my T-Mobile Wing. Built in GPS and the 400mhz processor make me happy I sold my wing to buy the Tilt. Now I wonder if the new AT&T Fuze has compatible 3G to T-Mobile, LOL.

anyone planning on using Nexus on AT&T

I have a magic (from rogers, so it works on At&t 3g) but I really really wanna get on board with the Nexus.
I am in NJ so TMo says 3g coverage is good, but i am just skeptical.
plus i have a family plan on at&t, wife uses iphone, doubt i could talk her into giving it up...
anyone gonna use the nexus on at&t and go without 3g???
I will be replacing my iphone with the nexus tomorrow when the n1 arrives. Because of how awful 3g is in my area (live in seattle work in redmond) I have been using edge almost exclusively. Funnily enough, my dropped calls have ceased after the 3g=>edge move. Go figure
I plan to keep my iphone handy and see just how painful the n1 is without the ability to attempt 3g if I really want it or need it (maps come to mind and so does pandora though both have been acceptable on edge thus far).
Perhaps I can call ATT and have them remove 3g from my account saving me some money each month.
I'm going to try it out on AT&T to see if/(how much) I miss 3g. If I can't get along without it, I'll just switch to T-Mobile. I live in Dallas so both AT&T and T-Mobile have full coverage.
For me, the people I talk to the most are on ATT and it would cost me more to continue my phone habits on a different provider than to just stick with ATT. Moving back to T-Mobile is not an option at this point. I really do wish I had kept my G1 when I made that move
yeah, i was thinking the same thing, just try my non-3g life out and go from there.....at least i'm not alone!
like you said, i have a family / friends all on att, so i might cost more if i were on tmo now...
thakns for input, good luck to us!
I have a g1 & mytouch on at&t just unlocked it. i dont mind having 2G only cuz my battery life is increased and when i get home i have wifi so i just attach to it to get better speeds.. i plan on getting the nexus one when i have the money for it. i didnt know the rogers phones are at&T compatible. anyone wanna sell or trade devices? PM ME
thanks
I hated having my iPhone on Tmobile, no 3G kinda killed the use of an iPhone, the call quality wasn't that great, and though it was handy, it was a bit annoying knowing that I had no 3G. I sold it for $370, used that money to buy a N1 :]
I have an xperia X1a.... and am probably going to buy a nexus.. I"m tired of people w/ cheap, crappy phones having way better internet speed than me.
BUT.. I will make sure that X10 really isn't tmo 3g compatible.
WHy won't the n1 get 3G- any idea when they might change that?
well, the n1 doesn't have the 850 mhz frequency that att runs there 3g on.
the n1 is coming to verizon in the spring and will have 3g......i honestly don't think n1 will ever get to att, especially since google is obviously battling with iphone.....
i really would love the n1, but i honestly don't know i could give up my magic with 3g on ATT......i was just downloading at 1600 kb/sec....pretty damn fast.
the 2g speed is only like 180 kb/sec.

wow! really?? OK....well, my decision is pretty easy then....bye bye ATT......
hello N1!
No AT&T 3G means no Nexus One for me. So my only hope now is that HTC releases their own branded version with Sense (which I would have wanted anyway) shortly after the hype blows over.
If the Acer A1 hits in the meantime, I'm going to get that I guess. No way in hell I'm switching to T-Mobile for any reason. They have zero coverage where I live and no roaming agreements with AT&T (I live in a Chicago suburb). But in areas where they do work, friends aren't getting 3G and 1/2 the time they aren't even getting EDGE!
Besides, I was only getting the AT&T version of the Nexus One to hold me over until Windows Mobile 7 drops. I have no problem waiting until Windows Mobile 7 and skipping Android altogether.
Personally, I think they screwed up. They gained very little from have Verizon offer it. Verizon customers who want a high end Android device *JUST* bought the Droid and will be getting Android 2.1 soon. If they made an AT&T compatible version, they'd have more potential for sales since AT&T has NO android devices so far and Canadian carriers can also take advantage.
For those on T-Mobile, looks like a good phone...

T-mo flipped the switch on their 7.2mbps 3G today. I'm sure it was planned to coincide with the N1 release, lol... anyway, T-mo is now the fastest GSM 3G in the U.S., right?
Edit: Just came across this article: http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/05/atandt-kicks-it-into-overdrive-rolls-out-7-2mbps-everywhere-bu/
Seems that AT&T now has a fire under its ass to follow suit. They too are speeding up their upgrade to 7.2mbps, but they won't have the backbone up to speed for a while apparently.

Winmo over Android? Really!?! For Microsoft's sake I hope you're right, but I think it's highly unlikely that WM7 will be enough to make Windows a plausible mobile platform. I've been in the wireless industry for a few years and Windows Mobile has, for just as long, been a last resort for anyone but the most diehard Windows fanatic(you?).
I do however agree that it's a win for those of us on T-Mobile. That make's five Android devices to choose from! And for the record I'll be picking up a Nexus One as soon as they start offering it with the employee discount!

Seriously man... blame AT&T and Apple for their internal agreements. It's because of the iPhone that AT&T isn't allowed to bring in any products that would cannibalize sales of the iPhone. Once exclusivity expires... Android devices will storm AT&T as well.

Virgin mobile canada

Anybody is a virgin mobile customer? Service? Signal strength and reliability? Coverage?
Am coming from Fido. Switching to Virgin for better phone selection, and their faster network.
I upgraded from a razor to a samsung galaxy s2 about three weeks ago and I'm with virgin mobile in ontario. I waited until they made a phone that would allow me to log onto my computer, use Skype, and have excellent video playback.
I walked out the door with the phone for 190.00 dollars on a three year plan.
I have rooted the phone and reinstalled the stock kernel.
this phone has no flaws in my opinion. After three weeks of constantly trying out
every thing I can on the phone, I would say that it works better than my backup computer. The call quality is excellent skype works a lot better than I anticipated, and the video playback, picture and video capabilities are better than anything
I could have imagined.
A friend of mine at work sells blackberries and does quite well at it. He was not too impressed when he got his hands on this phone. He couldn't believe how fast it was, and he has used every blackberry and iphone there is.
I have been with Virgin for 5 years and have no complaints about their service.
these new phones are expensive to use, they are also incredibly versatile.
I am glad I waited.
