[Q] JB 4.2 - Galaxy Tab 2 General

Any word on when the official JB 4.2 will be released on Galaxy Tab 2 10.1
Cheers
Steve

Considering Samsung just recently released 4.1 to this device? And NO other non-Nexus devices are running 4.2 OEM? And their focus seems to be on the Note? Probably never.

Yeah, I don't see this happening soon.. Or ever... Sadly. We will always have Par-, I mean, custom roms, I mean. LOL.

Yeah, you wil not get 4.2 by official way... but you have roms

Probably April / May for official. Expect test releases March / April. Without a Samsung release , the CM roms will never fully function on 4.2

Will it be safe to update?

With talks of 4.1 of 5.0 being announced this approaching week at Google I/O, and hopefully us Note users getting it, I'm a little concerned for those of us on an ICS kernel potentially infected with the ICS brick bug. Will it be safe for us to update our advices still through Kies on stock firmware?
I'm pretty sure that if Samsung decides to build 4.1 update for Note they will make sure to eliminate this problem, especially now when they're aware of it and know what and how causes it.

So, whenever the next update from Samsung comes out, be it 4.1, 5.0 or just some bug fixes for ICS 4.0, it should be safe to update?

If it's an official update, yes. But, if it does mess up and you haven't done anything to void the warranty, Samsung would fix it (or should).
But, I don't know if we will get an update or not.
From reading entropy's thread and getting an idea of what's been done before on other devices, its likely that Samsung will simply release an updated kernel without the emmc format command, thereby bypassing the issue, rather than an actual firmware update to correct the flawed emmc bug. If this is the case I would suggest it would be safer to first downgrade the kernel to a safe stock gb kernel before performing the upgrade.
That's all supposition though, until Samsung release an official statement we won't know what avenue they are taking. I really don't see why they wouldn't release a firmware update, perhaps it would mean everyone having to send they're phones in for the update to be applied rather than being able to do it through kies ourselves.

Samsung not prividing 4.0.4 update to s2 as per phonearena.com. So it is sure they will not update our handset to 4.1 or 5.0

Not necessarily... the s2 was released 6 months before the note. Update cycle is usually 18 months.

ATT SG3 and CM9 Question

Hello... first time poster here... if i install CM9 ( when stable is released), will i still be able to receive OTA updates..?? Im so interested in a more stock android experience, but i also want to keep OTA updates. Currently i am rooted but havent flashed a rom or nothing, and i still get the OTA updates. Thanks in advance to anyone that answers.

No and with all the **** going on with Apple right now you want to avoid an OTA as much as possible.

CM will incorporate things like updated radios, but many updates won't apply to your version....
Sent from my AT&T Galaxy SIII (SGH-i747)
Well how about, lets say the jelly bean update or security updates specifically for ATT model.... will those updates go through??

Short answer: no. If you're running CM you're on a completely different build than the version of Android/Touchwiz that ships on the device.
Longer answer: Both CM and the build that ships with the device are obviously both derived from the same source: Google's Android. So if Google fixes security problems in Android, then theoretically the CM guys should be packaging those into the next update of CM. If there is a security flaw specifically in the AT&T version of the phone, then it was probably caused by something custom that AT&T built into Android, in which case you won't get that update - but you wouldn't need it because you wouldn't have had the custom code that caused the flaw in the first place. Does that make sense?
Like eagle said, when on a custom ROM you are on your own and you don'T depend on Samsung or your carrier for updates, you depend on the developpers of the ROM. So you will probably get JB faster with CyanogenMod than with Samsung so it doesn't matter.

Not really, I assume you had the idea from S3 getting 4.3 instead of 4.2.
S3 skipped 4.2 because 4.3 was already released, and Samsung didn't have time to make both 4.2 and 4.3 roms.
Sorry for the off-topic.

Hello,
I think it will be December......
Personal guess: we will see a leaked ROM around start-mid October.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
IMHO if you want to feel how it taste 4.3 go directly to any modding thread and flash one the roms already available (after a nandroid backup), they are performing quite well and can be used as daily driver. Then, if you miss too much TW you can recover your nandroid and wait for Samsung to realese a 4.3 rom.
anyone have any details on what we can expect on the new firmware?

Look on the Nexus 4 thread for whats to come to us or check out the GE S4 Edition. They allready have it.

time to port them all! :)

waiting for a ROM for note 2 that has all the addable features from S4 and Note3. all this time the claimed reason why those features couldn't be ported was: note 2 is on android 4.1.2, but now, there is an android 4.3 leaked for Note 2. which means only one thing: the time for porting has begun
I believe kernel has to be updated first. Apparently the one in leaked version is an old 4.1.2. Correct me if I'm wrong.

He meant that the kernel was built for 4.1.2 not 4.3, not that the leak was android version 4.1.2
We'd probably need an updated kernal as Foka002 said.

ok so I get it. we also need the kernel, not only the android. I don't actually know how porting is done but all they said was "we need android 4.3" so I presumed android 4.3 was enough. what kernel number must it be in order to work?
He's just saying how the kernel build is outdated. The latest kernel is around 3.0.97? And I think the one on the leaked rom is around 3.0.31.

The one that came with the S4 4.3 leak was 3.4

S4 was is 4.2.2
The kernel version has nothing to do with the android version.
There are no 3.4 tree sources for the exynos4 anyway, we are left with 3.0.x until samsung decides to release the sources but that doesn't mean anything other than we are using an older revision of linux which theoretically translates to it being inferior and slower but treat it with a grain of salt. In reality it doesn't affect performance that much (or at all) and the 3.0.x can still be patched as it is in fact supported and considered the longterm stable series after all. -> https://www.kernel.org/
4.3 is 4.3 and all the apps should work as long as they don't require hardware specific modules and you provide them with libs which are required for them to function and they also support xhdpi and not only xxhdpi. The samsung framework shouldn't be that different between our leak and the s4 leak or the official 4.3 note3 rom. In fact I'm willing to bet that every app from the s4 leak will work on our leak as long as the conditions I mentioned are met. That said their stability and functionality isn't guaranteed in any way. You can't expect 4k recording all of the sudden.

Android 4.4 for S4?

I read a few articles saying that Google has announced 4.4 will be coming to the S4 GE shortly after the Nexus 5 releases/ships.
Is it likely that I'll be able to install this ROM on my regular I9505XXUBMGA?
Also what are your thoughts on 4.4 coming to the S4?
Still waiting for 4.3. in other words 6-12 months hopefully.

You can install GE firmware on the i9505 as it's the same hardware. HTC said they'll have 4.4 on the One GE in 15 days, so I assume the same goes for the S4. The touchwiz version will most likely come after the S5 is released.

Awesome will definitely be flashing the GE 4.4 as soon as someone rips and uploads it then.
Most likely once their done updating their current devices to 4.3 you can expect 4.4 next.. i know HTC came out today and announce it will have 4.4 on their GPE in a few weeks and Sense roms by the end of January
Soon hopefully. I'm on 4.3 with Orange/EE UK. No root or rom flashing etc. They were quick

I'm on EE with a Galaxy S4 in the UK and Kies isn't rolling the update out yet....not for me anyway!
GPE edition hopefully soon. HTC have said Sense will be updated within 90 days. Hopefully Samsung make an announcement in regards to official 4.4 TouchWiz edition.

4.3 was rolled out via ota for nexus devices at July 24. Two weeks after it was rolled out for GPE devices. Then after less than 3 months the touchwiz 4.3 update came in.
Samsung rarely anounces time frames for their updates but if we follow the pattern above, the GPE 4.4 update should come in 2-3 weeks and the tw version in 3-4months.
In the meantime you could flash your favorite custom AOSP based rom like CM (should come very soon as the nexus 4 already got a booting 4.4 version) to satisfy your kitkat cravings while waiting for the official update.
Now let's play the waiting game and see who gets to make the first kitkat build for the s4

Perhaps Samsung will release 4.4 without a new flagship device. It depends on the objectives of the company.
But for 2014 April or March the S5 is due... we only have 2 months left in 2013.
Sent from my GT-I9500 using Tapatalk
Some reports say S5 will be announced in January so all of Samsung's efforts are probably going into polishing the 4.4 experience for that.
